Jim Tomsula probably won’t be doing many one-on-one interviews

The Jim Tomsula media excursion will likely last as long as Kramer’s book tour.

While the 49ers new head coach had a far different demeanor during his introductory press conference than his guarded, combative, unreasonably cautious predecessor (who always seemed to be reading from an invisible teleprompter on which his words appeared so he could scan them before he said them), Tomsula’s sit-down with Comcast Bay Area made him seem like something other than who he seemed to be at the podium — an affable shift supervisor at a trucking company explaining to his drivers the latest changes to the pre-trip inspection process.

The Big Lead has the video of the interview.  Tomsula comes off as a guy who has no desire to be there, who doesn’t necessarily realize everything he says is being recorded, and who desperately wants to put the microphone down and leave.

The best part is the beginning, when it appears that Tomsula has been temporarily rendered mute but is nevertheless attempting to engage in communication by whatever noises his mouth will emit.  When he regains the power of speech, Tomsula doesn’t say much of anything, fearful that if he takes the bait on any of the questions he’ll get twisted into knots or otherwise blurt out key strategic information.

It’s not as if Tomsula was being grilled.  Sure, the questions touched on currently sensitive subjects like the offensive and defensive coordinators he may hire.  But there’s a way to give an answer that seems reasonably fair, not unreasonably standoffish.

So it’s safe to say that Tomsula probably won’t be doing many more one-on-one interviews.  Unless and until he gets some of whatever training or advice it was that allowed quarterback Colin Kaepernick to transform from annoyed robot to upbeat chatterbox.

  1. I’m waiting for SEAHAWKS fans to get and spew their ignorant posts. It’s sad, really. You have a game this weekend and yet you have the 49ers on your mind. A franchise that rips off the Atlanta Hawks and Texas A & M. No wonder the Seattle fans are the most useless fanbase around. 2012th man!

  2. It was unreal, and almost the dictionary definition of car crash television. He made Belichick look cheerful, talkative and animated!

  3. Maybe he needs to have Biden teach him. At least he would have “interesting” quotes. “Fire a couple rounds off the balcony”

And yet you’re the first poster on here spewing an ignorant post like what you accuse Seahawks fans of doing. So tell us exactly how they are more ignorant than you.

  5. Sheesh…lighten up. Let the guy get a few days under his belt before you start criticizing everything he does/says. Maybe he hates the media attention as much as Marshawn Lynch. Cut them both some slack.

  6. That interview is hilarious! He sounds like one of Tony Soprano’s crew. He must be a great X’s & O’s guy because he doesn’t have much skill in communicating anything else.

  7. So he didn’t give the “How do you feel about your teams execution?” “I’m all for it” answer. Give him a year……………..or less.

  8. Let’s be real here, he only got hired because he’ll let York and Baalke call down from the owner’s box and tell him what to run and who to play.

  9. Embarrassing… Thanks Jed for giving Baalke the puppet he deserves. Sadly it’s us fans that are the biggest losers in your whole charade.

  10. The crazy part is he’s actually VERY talkative and charismatic. He’s funny … he’s quick witted. His players LOVE him. What has happened here is that York and Baalke have scared him to death … told him all the things he can’t speak about and why he can’t speak about them, that the guy is gun shy. He doesn’t know what to answer and what not to answer. He’s not himself in these interviews cuz in reality he’s a straight shooter. The ‘suits’ got a hold of him and now he’s … whatever the heck he is in those interviews.

  11. That interview was embarrassing and uncomfortable to watch. Tomsula looks like a guy you wouldn’t trust with your plumbing let along a team worth millions of dollars. 49ers fans gotta be pissed they let the defensive coordinator walk.

  12. Stop with the hate already. Last I checked tomsula is undefeated as a head coach. Harbaugh came up short and is gone. Now lets see what this talented team can do with a new staff.

Always good to hear from bitter niners fans. Let’s just get it out of the way ahead of time. Yes…yes…I know you have 5 Super Bowl wins. There, that is done. Good to have a great rivalry but your comment made absolutely no sense. Enjoy the offseason. At least your team has a few more weeks to heal up and get ready for next year. Unless you lose more of your players due to domestic abuse. Good luck.

  14. Been there from the start
    Really not worried
    About my niners
    Defense will dominate
    Special teams is solid
    Half backs are set
    Assistant coaches will be covered
Win is all the 49ers do

Ready to take over the nfc west
    Instead of the hawks
    Party time in SF

  15. LMAO at Kramer’s book tour..that’s an excellent and accurate analogy.Tomsula is like Kramer when he pretended to be that high level executive and had that corporation fooled until it was time for him to give his presentation. That’s exactly like the Tomsula press conference.

  16. I said it yesterday after I watched it…it was brutal. Harbaugh wouldn’t say anything and this guy just babbles on about stuff that makes no sense?? Hard to believe he could “wow” anybody in a one on one interview for the head coaching job of an NFL franchise..but he apparently did.

  17. Like Jackie Gleason ” Hummana Hummana Hummana” Anyone of you kids less than a half century old Google The Honeymooners.

  18. At first I laughed, right along with the rest of the Sports Media Sharks from NY,Chicago and SF.But then I felt sorry for him because he was suddenly thrown into a shark tank and in way over his head.I hope he pulls off some wins just to prove the “haters” wrong. But if things go the way most people think they will, we can only blame York and Baalke for trading a successful coach for on unproven commodity with puppet strings all attached.

  19. If he wins and the ownership loves him then great. If not and they post a sub 500 record in 2015 it could ugly. Just have to see what happens, Harbaugh was no gem with the media either as we all know. GO HAWKS!

  20. I clicked on the video. My goodness that was bad. I’ve never seen a coach who didn’t want to be in an interview like that. Seemed like something out of Saturday Night Live and I’m not kidding

  21. To be fair, it’s hard to concentrate when you have Yorkie and Balky talking into that earpiece in your ear, telling you exactly what to say.

  22. i am far from a 49ers/tomsula fan, but i have no idea why anyone is making it seem as if he is responsible for the awfulness of that interview. maybe look to the clown asking the ridiculous questions.

  23. Just like with Marshawn Lynch, I fail to see the importance of an NFL player or coach’s public speaking abilities and/or desires (i.e. lack thereof). As long as Tomsula is effective at communicating with his players and other coaches, and puts together a winning product, I think most 49ers fans could care less how well he does in interviews with the media. Similarly, as long as Marshawn Lynch produces on the field, I see no reason why he needs to give interviews in situations that are clearly out of his comfort zone. Bottom line, I’m just a firm believer that on-field production is really the only thing that should matter in the NFL. Let the players and coaches who are comfortable with public speaking do the interviews with the media. Force feeding this crap on everyone just to satisfy various media outlets is a crock. And I’m a fan of neither the 49ers or Seahawks.

  24. erA career defensive line coach that can’t speak. And he’s matching wits with Arians, Fischer and Carroll. But at least he gets along with the pinhead owner.

    ====================================

That was a pretty ignorant comment. This Seattle fan could care less if your coach ever speaks to the press or not. His media presence is inconsequential, meaningless, trivial & unimportant to me. All I’m interested in is the good rivalry and games we had between us, and I hope he’s able to produce that as well as Harbaugh did. That’s all that matters. You’ve a good team and ~some~ good fans so don’t belittle them with your childish posts.

    GO SEAHAWKS!

  26. Not sure what’s more embarrassing for us Niner fans?

Hearing this interview or reading a fellow Niner fan try to bash a Seahawks fan with the first post in this thread.

  27. tomsula is not hiring the coordinators himself, so it makes perfect sense for him to distance himself from that conversation. continuing to grill him about it only reveals ignorance on the part of the interviewer, and criticizing tomsula for his reaction is pure idiocy.

  28. OMG! Seriously! This dude is a tool. I believe the 49ers are in serious trouble! Can you imagine him trying to talk to the refs about a call. It’s gonna be like…um well duh so um what um well no I um really do um ok so was he out of bounds sort of? LMAO

  29. All you need to know Jim Tomsula. This was an atrocious hiring and should cost Jed York his job. Many 6-10 seasons to come….

Oh, by the way… Jed is the OWNER and unless he can fire himself, (See: Indy) you’re stuck with him, 49er fans.

And as far as communication skills, I wouldn’t compare him to Marshawn Lynch, who, only once a week needs to answer 3 questions from the media. A coach has 2 (minimum) press conferences a week during the season. Pete Carroll does about 45 minutes each. Even Coach Belichick does 10-15 minutes of Q&A. So, he DOES need to take Communications 101 at a local college or something. His skill set is below any coach I’ve ever heard. And he represents the team, unlike Marshawn, who represents himself.

49er fan reads article about how inept their new coach is, and their first thought is “Hmm, I better get ahead of these ignorant Seahawks fans and bash them before they can bash our new coach.”

Which pretty much means the Seahawks fans have won this battle already without even starting it!! It’s sad, really…..hahahahaha

  31. I don’t care about Tomsula’s interviews… How petty! I’m only concerned about the product he puts on the field. Hopefully he picks a different defensive coordinator, other than Tarver. Dick LeBeu is old, but would be a good replacement for Fangio. Sources are pointing to Mike Shanahan for defensive coordinator, who is a good choice for a rookie head coach.

By the way, I’m not happy with Harbaugh being jettisoned by Baby Jed and Baalke and with all the 49ers’ defensive coaches on the move – We as 49ers fans have to love this pick or start following another team… Go Niners!

    – – – – – – –

If only that were possible. But I guarantee that in 2-3 seasons York is going to fire Tomsula AND Baalke after they fail to have a single winning season. I remember 2002 very well when John York fired Steve Mariucci for the same reasons…and it was all downhill from there. This is no different.

It sucks to be a Niner fan right now!

  33. Don’t even try to compare Tomsula giving an interview to Bill B. We know he’s a tool….but he’s a legend and can do what he wants when it comes to interviews. Tomsula is being interviewed after being hired by a local guy, not the national media. He should at least try to be enthusiastic. You can have some decent body language and act genuinely excited given you were just named the head coach. What a horrible impression that gave the Niners. Worst interview ever by a new NFL head coach. Painful to watch.

  34. He is going to be a major embarrassment on all levels. The GM will hire an OC and a DC to manage games for him, too…which is even more embarrassing. He does not even realize that he is an embarrassment…which is problematic.

  35. You know, I kind of like the guy after watching the interview. He’s kind of like that nerd in high school who gets picked on by the popular kids, and you feel kind of bad for him so you decide to get friendly. Even though I hate the 49ers, I’ll be rooting for Tomsula- I just won’t admit that to anyone publicly.

  36. This interview reminded me of the first presser I seen when Todd Haley was hired as Chiefs Head Coach right after his SB loss as the Cards OC. He looked like a scared rabbit in front of the media. Talk about babbling! But he got better.
These guys are coaches, most of them didn’t major in broadcast journalism so yeah, their first few times they probably aren’t going to be to comfortable with the media.
But it is now his job. He has to to do it several times a week, he is going to have several speaking engagements for team functions. Listen, it’s not all about the X’s and O’s anymore with these guys. They have so many more responsibilities behind the scenes that we never see. That’s why it’s so crucial to put together a good staff and hopefully the owners will pay for the top notch assistants. He was smart in saying he didn’t want to do any play calling on game day, because his head will be spinning as a first time HC. Ultimately his success will be determined wether he can balance all his other duties and still coach and get thru to the players and not let the pressure of the job get to him like it did Haley.
He wasn’t ready. Plus, if you have a really good QB, you have a leg up.

  37. Coaches and players always sound like politicians when they get behind a microphone.

You gotta be a good bullshooter to be able to finesse a press conference where reporters are going to ask you questions that they’re not going to get direct answers to.

To blab team strategies or to kneecap a struggling player or say anything that today’s media will misconstrue for the sake of viewer/reader interest would be the equivalent of treason.

Tomsula doesn’t seem to be built for Bee Ess. Perhaps he’ll get better at it with time.

  38. Something is to be said about the owner, GM and coach being on the same page. That hasn’t been the case for the last couple of years. So yeah, Tomsula might not be the next Parcells but if he’s an honest guy that the Players respond to and has the support of the executive team that could translate to wins and a playoff birth. Remember these players are adults with a strong veteran leadership already in place. I love the comments about York losing his job. How about you become an owner of a business and see if you’ll let someone fire you (or will you do the firing).
