Raiders to bring Bill Musgrave back for a second stint

Jack Del Rio has found the man to run his offense.

According to Michael Silver of the NFL Network, the Raiders are going to hire Eagles quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave to be their next offensive coordinator.

It won’t be his first stint in the Bay Area, as he was once a quarterback with the 49ers and the Raiders’ quarterback coach in 1997.

Prior to his one year with Chip Kelly, he spent most of the last decade with the Vikings and Falcons.

He was also Del Rio’s coordinator once before, during a two-year stint with the Jaguars (2003-04).

  1. Musgrave did an amazing job with Sanchez last year. Imagine what he will do with a QB that has the kind of arm talent and smarts that Carr has. Another excellent choice by Del Rio and the Raiders Organization.

  2. raiders scraping the bottom of the barrel. Musgrave is TERRIBLE! Just wait until he pulls out his 4×6 recipe card for play calling! It’s so pathetic it’s comical.

    #LAWLWAYS

  3. If he brings Kelly’s offense with him, maybe it will work out. If he brings his own, which he used with the Vikings, predictability awaits.

  4. Viking fans always complained about Musgrave acting like Ponder was Joe Montana. There was a reason he called so many screen passes, it’s all Christian could complete.

  5. Well….

At least it is not Marc Trestman.

I just hope they don’t screw up Derek Carr. It has been a long time since this much hope was felt in Oakland.

  6. This couldn’t possibly be a worse hire. After watching him run a pathetic offense in Minnesota (not just when Ponder was in there) I can honestly say this guy has no business as a coordinator. He may know something about being a QB coach, but not a OC.

  7. People cannot wait to get out of Philly. They will even leave for oakland. Philly is trending downward big time.

  8. Minnesota was ranked 18th his first year in total offense, 28th in pass offense, and 4th rushing (all thanks to AP, and the o-line we had built before him. his second year we went to 20th in total offense, and 31st in passing offense. Musgrave just wasnt a good coach, and his index card of plays was so predictable.

  9. This type of hire is exactly why 90% of the upper deck seating at Raider home games is covered in tarps

  10. Good luck Oakland. He was the offensive coordinator under Leslie Frazier in Minnesota, so look forward to lots of short passes and a dink-and-dunk offense so dull and predictable that it would put a meth addict to sleep.

This guy gets a bad reputation for his time with the vikings but he had no talent there to work with there.

    He’ll improve the Raiders.

    ___________

HAHAHAHA!!! Do you actually read what you write? The raiders are TERRIBLE, 31st in the league as the article says. The raiders offense isn’t making anyone blush.

  12. All Jack needs to do is hire Bill Bates as his special teams coach, and he’ll have his original Jacksonville staff back together…

  13. this is the Guy who asked Joe Webb to be a pocket passer when Ponder got a BooBoo for the Playoff game against the LOLPackers
I’d like to see the Raiders make a come back, but This guy isnt gonna help.

  14. “David Carr is intelligent quarterback… unlike ponder” really massiveraidersfan? all Ponder had was great accuracy, and incredible intelligence. Ponder won many awards for being one of if not the top Scholar-Athlete. He has a degree in finance he earned in 2.5 years, and got his masters faster than most non athlete-students get their under grad degrees. Oh and he is getting his second degree soon. He was extremely coachable, but there was no good coaching

  15. Three bad moves in a row!

Del Rio Who lost his drive after getting paid his big money in 2008.

Mike Tice for being nowhere near as half as good as joe bugel.

Now Bill Musgrave! Bad OC in Minnesota and, oh btw, how was nick Foles in 2014???

  16. Fyi for some posters in here. The qb in oakland is derek carr not david carr. david is derek’ s brother who played for houston and the giants

  17. Minnesota still a trainwreck since he left…maybe he wasn’t the problem. Haters gon hate. Derek Carr better than any QB he had in minny, players make the plays, not the coach

  18. Solid hire. Not the “name” (i.e., Trestman) some people wanted, but Musgrave fits with what JDR wants to do – RUN THE BALL. This is a guy that has had success doing it (went to the play-offs in 2012 with Ponder as his QB) and will stick with it. Also, he’s a good QB coach that can help with Carr.

As for Trestman, never been impressed with him. He’s way too pass happy. He had one of the best backs in the league the last two years in Chicago and didn’t want to feed him the ball. His unwillingness to run ultimately did us in back in the Super Bowl season of 2002 also.

Musgrave is a good fit with what JDR wants to do – power football on offense and tough, hard nosed D. Again, not a sexy hire but a solid one. Well done Jack.

  19. Welcome back to the stench of Oakland. Nothing has changed. Raider still losing and nobody cares. We are all about the Niners in Norcal. Oh you already know that!

  20. Dear Oakland,

There is a reason 100% of Vikings fans are in complete agreement of how horrible Bill Musgrave is as an OC. We are more than aware of what talent is and is not on our teams roster. You can justify it all you want, I guarantee you, with complete certainty that you will see what we are talking about. It is the blandest, most mind baffling offensive system I have ever witnessed and we had to endure 3 years of it. Its not a joke, it is not funny, it is soul crushing. He may have worked with some good QBs, but his play calling will lead you to alcoholism. I don’t want to say “Just watch” and inevitably “I told you so” because I don’t wish viewing such horrible football on anyone. You can blame it on Ponder all you want, but if anything, Ponders failure is a result of “Run, Run, Play Action 5 yard out on 3rd and 10” for THREE YEARS. Do you enjoy “2 WR/2 TE sets” where every route is underneath? I hope so.

    Unfortunately Signed,
    Vikings nation.

  21. I’ll wait til pre season to make any judgement on this hire, really can’t complain about any new hires, our last few coaches have all been lackluster. Hopefully these coaches have learned a thing or two since their last stints.

  22. He may have had no QBs to work with in MN, but he had AP and Percy and still had trouble. His main problem was the inability to make in-game adjustments and manage the gameday changes needed in the offensive game plan — much like Mike McCarthy in yesterday’s NFC championship game.

    …………………
That may be the dumbest post ever. To be honest ,I don’t recall Ponder ever being compared to Montana.I do, however feel sorry for Derek Carr and his next 2 years of mediocrity.

  24. Oh this brings me back. I remember when my fellow Viking fans tried to justify this hire. Despite the fact that he never has coordinated a team that has been even in the top half of the league in passing, it was always the talent from previous regime’s he coached on.

Sorry Raider fans, justify it however you want, it’s only a matter of time before you’re on here begging for his firing, just like Vikings fans, Jaguar fans and Panther fans before you. He is one of the worst offensive coordinators I’ve ever witnessed.

  25. I’m sorry Raiders fans, hopefully he Derek Carr can develope by himself bc if he can’t then get used to a lot of run run pass short of the first down marker.

  26. Did an Oakland Fan Really just put down the Vikings? Lol… You guys have been the doormat of the NFL for like… Ever… Carr has shown skills, I actually thought he and Teddy Were the best QBs in the draft, yet, b4 you can hammer on another team, your must win more than 2-3 games a year!! Then we’ll talk, about you playing football on home plate

  27. I like how Vikings fans are trying to talk trash, but the guy coordinated the offense for their team on a 10-6 run with Christian “Deer in the Headlights” Ponder starting 16 games in 2012.

  28. I wondered where this guy ended up when he left Minnesota. I assumed at a high school. I can’t believe he was in the NFL last year and now is getting promoted to OC again. Derek Carr should demand a trade.

  29. Two things I have noticed after reading these comments:

    1. Viking fans cannot stand musgrave …. me being one of them. .

    2. people confuse Derek carr with his older brother, David.

  30. Are you kidding me his numbers as OC suck ……I live in MN 1 st down run up the middle second down run up the middle third down throw 3 yard pass so many better options

  31. And once again the raiders step on their own dicks and screw up. Another bad hire by this dim job of a franchise. Was Paul Hackett not available?Terrible hire

  32. Why is everyone so high on Derek Carr? He’s the second coming of Andy Dalton. He’s a good, not great QB who I would want as my backup QB, not my franchise QB.

  33. As a raider fan for 30 years, this is getting to be a complete joke. Just like Del Rio, no one was even considering to bring in Mustgrave as an OC. Now all the raiders need to do is hire Mangini as DC. To think this team had a 3 month head start on their coaching search and this is the best they can do? This team will not win more than 6 games in a season for the next 3 years and we will be back to square one. One of the worse franchises in all of sports

  34. Before anyone else comments take a look at the QBS this guy had worked with. Not necessarily world beaters. Then look at the RBS. then u see some studs. Which would explain his tendency to be a run first OC. Then look at how he has led some of those bum/past prime QBS to career yrs and you may start to think not as bad a hire as u may think

  35. Whoever the OC is, Carr needs better weapons to get the ball to. Since McKenzie is still the GM, I hope he is capable of making decent acquisitions (draft/FA) in that direction.

Thanks for your concern u guys know better than us but I’m sorry what is this Viking Nation I’ve never heard of such a thing. There is only one nation RAIDER NATION!!!!!

    SKOL!!!!

  37. hello Raider Nation i say lets give him a chance we where ranked bottom of the list with are oc last year i believe in coach Del Rio cant wait till the draft that will show if we are going the right way or not and free agency thats the kicker i think Always and forever a Raider fan i am cant wait guys

  38. You can’t justify this hire period. So many better options trestman for one This just kills me life long Raider fan and this makes noooooo sense at all. Pissed offf

  39. Lets get tot real fact…..if it was anybody else the same haters would have said the same thing about the other person……bottom line players just need to execute the play that is called. It’s not like any OC draws up plays for 2 yard gains…..

As for the Vikings fan making their comments. Just as an fyi…I have no problem giving Adrian Petersen the ball next year on first down after you cut him next month.

This was Jack’ s pick for OC …so be it. Go Raiders

  40. Thank god…

Nick Foles went from 27 TD 2 Int under Lazor, to 17 TD and 12 Int with Musgrave.

Granted, I dont know how much of that is the QB coaches fault, but I sure dont think its a good thing.

  41. I thought the whole Del Rio thing was kind of neat when Mike Smith was gonna be our DC and either Gase or Trestman was gonna be the OC .
