Bears consider Charlie Weis, Adam Gase for offensive coordinator

The Bears are considering some familiar names to be their next offensive coordinator.

Charlie Weis and Adam Gase are among the candidates, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Weis has been out of work since he was fired as the head coach at Kansas last season. Between his failure at Kansas and his failure at Notre Dame, Weis is widely regarded as a bad college head coach, but he has had good stints as an NFL offensive coordinator with the Jets, Patriots and Chiefs.

Gase was new Bears head coach John Fox’s offensive coordinator in Denver and had a lot of success with the Broncos, although it’s fair to ask whether a coordinator of an offense run by Peyton Manning can really be given much credit for his team’s success.

Schefter also mentioned Lions quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter as a candidate to become coordinator in Chicago, but that seems unlikely, as the Lions aren’t letting him out of his contract. Former 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst is also a candidate for the Bears job.

  1. While the shine has certainly worn off Gase, and Weis seems like an absolute tool. I’d rather have Cryst than the other choices. But I’m sure Fox has a better idea of what’s that than any of us.

  2. Just imaginge how huge Weis will be in Chicago…after he eats all the amazing food we have here.

  3. Please God, not Charlie Weis…And of those mentioned, only Gase excites me…I’d been thinking Kyle Shanahan, too, but apparently he’s going elsewhere.

  4. Lol you guys have been all over adam gase and how a slam dunk he was gonna be as a head coach. Now your saying he did nothing

He will wind up at cleveland. Haslam liked him

  5. Are there no new young minds in college that can be given an opportunity?

    Ya or the CFL…..oh wait…..

  6. Pretty debatable how “successful” his 1 year stint was in KC. That offense was very, very conservative and faded badly down the stretch. I would argue a strong defense and Jamaal Charles breaking off a long run almost every game got them that playoff spot.

I know Matt Cassel made the Pro Bowl that year, but they’ll give a Pro Bowl roster spot to just about anybody. The fact is KC averaged less than 200 passing yds per game in 2010.

Weis hasn’t coordinated a top 10 NFL offense since 2004 in New England.

  7. “although it’s fair to ask whether a coordinator of an offense run by Peyton Manning can really be given much credit for his team’s success.”

Shouldn’t that same logic apply to Dan Quinn who became the ‘hot’ candidate because his defense happens to have like a ton of All-Pro talent in the Starting 11?

  8. Here’s the kicker: Charlie Weis is still being paid several million dollars by two colleges (Notre Dame and Kansas) NOT to coach.

Remember what a hot head-coaching candidate he was in the early 2000s? Does anything else think that Charlie might like to have a do-over on the last decade?

  9. If Peyton was an OC he would have forbade himself from throwing deep.

Peyton is the OC = biggest myth in football.

    He can’t draw up plays.

Weis and Gase are 1a. and 1b., but Gase’s lack of immediate hiring might be a red flag because he’d be in Chicago by … NOW.

Gase might lose the OC job because he was McDaniels’ colleague when they got rid of Cutler. Plus, he coached brandon Marshall. Were they bad, or were those two good, but marshall and McDaniels were bad?

Weis on the other hand knows Clausen the backup as does Fox. Plus, he was in college and thus he was “scouting draft picks” which actually can replace Cutler. That’s why i see that hiring happening and not Gase.

  10. Weiss was still getting paid from Notre Dame and Kansas this year. He stinks but his agent must be awesome.

  11. Why do the same Viking’s trolls continue to troll the 2 teams that they know are more historic and more popular in the division? The Bears instantly became better than what the Vikings have been trying to do for the past 20 years….Fox and Fangio compared to Zimmer and George Edwards and that terrible sore loser Norv Turner. Not even close, if I was a vikings fan I would be jealous and pissed too.

Bears and Packers are the only respectable teams in that division.

Well if that’s the case, he might sign for less money. Right in the owner’s wheelhouse! …….cough (cheap)…cough….

  14. Solid, experienced NFL OCs aren’t there. Go for someone in the ranks…

Gase is clearly damaged by his inability to get a job. And Weis quite likely, too.

    They are cheap…..

  17. “although it’s fair to ask whether a coordinator of an offense run by Peyton Manning can really be given much credit for his team’s success.”

Exactly. Cannot understand all this Adam Gase interest as a head coach… or even a coordinator. That’s Manning’s offense, and when he’s done so is that offense. Gase is a coordinator in title only.

  18. My opinion as a Bears fan is that Fox was a solid hire and Fangio could very well be the best coaching hire of the year for any team. The OC candidates coming to Chicago OTOH… weak sauce. Of course knowing they will inherit Cutler has to cut down the pool of willing candidates quite a bit.

  19. Jim Bob Cooter and Geep Chryst are clearly just being interviewed for the Krusty rule. The lesser known cousin of Rooney rule where you have to interview people with funny names to appease Krusty the clown.

  20. “They are cheap…..”

Based on what? They brought and paid for Cutler, Peppers, Marshall, ate the contracts of an entire coaching stuff and GM?

Develop an informed opinion, just dont be a parrot and spit out popular opinion.

They’re not bad because they’re cheap, they’re bad because they’ve made poor decisions personnel wise.

  21. Why do the same Viking’s trolls continue to troll the 2 teams that they know are more historic and more popular in the division? ==================================
Vikings trolls are miserable. The Vikings have one playoff appearance in the last 5 years, a loss to the Packers. Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater finishes in the lower third of QB’s, with only a couple more TD’s than INT’s, yet he is going to lead them to the Super Bowl. Most Vikings fans have only recently learned to walk on upright on two legs and use things other than their skulls to open household items.

  22. I would take Charlie Weiss but regardless who they will never win the big one with Cutler at qb. Choke every time just like the Packers. CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE. GO PACK, GO BEARS.

==================================Cody, let’s always remember who it is that chokes in the big game. The Bears and Packers have both Super Bowl and NFL championships. The Vikings have one NFL championship, which was in the Super Bowl era, which is akin to an NFC championship today. The Vikings were promptly beaten in the Super Bowl that year. When it comes to losing “the Big Game” count on the Vikings. Only problem is, the Vikings can’t even get in the playoffs anymore.

  25. The conventional wisdom is that Weis failed at ND but he actually did well except for one season and set Kelly up with a lot of talent. His KC stint was marred by a conflict with Todd Haley. He’s a good coordinator and will do well with the talented Bears offense.

You really are an idiot. Figures only took the Seahawks 40 years to be relevant in the NFL.

No one but you calls the She-eattle She-Hawks the “Hawks”

Seahawks are about to get embarrassed by the Patriots!

You have the UGLIEST uniforms in the NFL, look like a BAD 80’s party! L0L!

  27. Teams go out and hire offensive coordinators from teams with HOF QBs and they wonder why they never get any better.

  28. Mark my word, you will be watch Vikings Dynasty while your Packers and Bears will be in the bottom for the next 1000 years to come. What makes you think Fox will get the job done when he has one of the best qb in Manning. Bears are pathetic weak defense and choke, Packers melt down every time.

  30. Greg Olsen or Soprano could be safe hires. But personally I would love to see Mark Mangino wrapping his hands around Cutler and Marshall like he’s grabbing two corndogs.

Wow, do you feel better now? She-eattle, boy that’s a good one.

Well you get back to judging team’s uniform colors and we Hawks’ fans will continue to prepare for a Super Bowl REPETE.

  32. Packers were 8-12 against the Vikings in the 1990’s, not 2-18. Try not to lie about facts that are easy to research.

More recently, since 2010, the Packers are 9-1-1 against your team, and the Bears are 7-3 against your team in that time frame. Even the Lions are 6-4 against your team since 2010.

It looks your team is not doing so well.

  33. Weis is a good coach when he is on a strong staff, on his own, your good for 2 wins a year. He won notta at KU and got canned. Gase, I have no idea about, seems he has interviewed with everyone except the pope and not been offered a gig yet. I read everything from he is an a-hole to he is demanding, so who knows..

  34. “The conventional wisdom is that Weis failed at ND but he actually did well”

He failed at the things he bragged would be his strengths. They recruited well under him at ND but they never played as well as the recruiting rankings suggested they should have. He promised they’d always have a “schematic advantage” but they never outschemed anybody. And he went to KU and made the team even worse than they were when he took it over.

But all that being said he’s been a good OC in the NFL before. That has always been his strength. If he’s committed to it he could still be good in that capacity.

  35. If anything, hiring Weis should improve Chicago’s special teams – opposing kickers will have one hell of a time adjusting to the gravitational pull that Charlie’s body exerts on the football.

  36. My preference is Kyle Shanahan. I like Kyle’s offensive schemes and his ability to adjust to whatever talent is available. Furthermore, I like that he works to establish the run game first, and has a roll out scheme that would be perfect for Cutler. I wonder where he’s headed – my guess is they might recreate the Texans structure in Denver, where Dennison was the assistant Head Coach and Kyle had the OC job.

Between Weis, Gase, and Chryst, my preference is probably Weis. People forget how flexible and adaptable his offense was in New England. He ran a modified WCO that emphasized the run game early on before expanding the pass game as Brady developed. It feels like a structure that could work. I’m not sure why I’m not that enthused about Gase … has nothing to do with Manning and more to do with, I think, that I’m just not sure what type of offensive structure he would bring in. Perhaps he’d bring a modified Weis/McDaniels offense … dunno.

I’d love to bring in a young guy to groom, perhaps as a QB coach, if Weis is the option (hard to imagine him sticking around long term). Penn State’s Ricky Rahne seems like a fairly intriguing guy to groom.

  37. I get a good chuckle when the hotshot coordinator passes up an opportunity to be the HC of a struggling team. Then the next flavor of the month genius steals his shine and takes the job. Take heed coordinators, when a NFL team offers you the chance, take it. The opportunities are few. As we see, old coaches are getting second and third chances while you jockey for new coordinator slots.

  38. Geep Chryst?? so when the bears offense is doing horrible we can shout Geep Chryst at the TV and not get yelled at for using the lord’s name in vain?? lol

  39. Please. Not Charlie Weis. I still remember what Mike Martz didn’t do for the team and I would still take him over this overrated clown.

  40. Gase was the WR coach at Denver when they were getting rid of Marshall. I’m pretty sure Gase is sick of Marshall and would have a hard time coaching him, but I believe Marshall is going to be moved before the season, so here comes Gase, your new OC of the bears, he’s interviewing today.

  41. Sucks to be Adam Gase right now. Not only are you not getting a HC gig this year, you have to go back to work for your former boss (hope he didn’t burn any bridges with Fox yet), in a more competitive division than you left and by the way, you get Coach-Killer Cutler as your QB too.

  42. I believe Marshall is going to be moved before the season,
    ———————-
This is what I’m hearing as well. I think the new regime is thinking Cutler may actually have a better chance of succeeding apart from Marshall (we’ll see about that), and with him and Alshon Jeffery you’re basically doubling up on the big WR position while badly lacking a true slot guy and/or any kind of field stretcher.

It’s not uncommon for new HC/GM regimes to make a “statement” personnel move when they come in (i.e., getting rid of a high-profile veteran player and/or fan favorite). With Emery/Trestman it was Urlacher (and to a lesser degree, Peppers), and with Fox/Pace I could easily see it being Marshall.

  43. How could anyone who watched the Bronco’s offensive game plan think Gase is the man?

… and who want’s to work with Cutler… Mr. ‘Shrug My Shoulders’ and ‘It’s not my fault’… but cashes those massive contract checks.
