The Bears are considering some familiar names to be their next offensive coordinator.
Charlie Weis and Adam Gase are among the candidates, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Weis has been out of work since he was fired as the head coach at Kansas last season. Between his failure at Kansas and his failure at Notre Dame, Weis is widely regarded as a bad college head coach, but he has had good stints as an NFL offensive coordinator with the Jets, Patriots and Chiefs.
Gase was new Bears head coach John Fox’s offensive coordinator in Denver and had a lot of success with the Broncos, although it’s fair to ask whether a coordinator of an offense run by Peyton Manning can really be given much credit for his team’s success.
Schefter also mentioned Lions quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter as a candidate to become coordinator in Chicago, but that seems unlikely, as the Lions aren’t letting him out of his contract. Former 49ers quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst is also a candidate for the Bears job.
