49ers add Jason Tarver as linebackers coach

The Raiders hired 2014 49ers assistant Brad Seely as their special teams coach this week and now the 49ers have returned the favor by hiring a member of last year’s Raiders coaching staff.

According to multiple reports, former Oakland defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will be part of Jim Tomsula’s first 49ers staff as a linebackers coach and senior assistant. The possibility of the hiring was first reported last week, although it was unclear at that point which job Tarver would be taking.

It will be Tarver’s second stint with the 49ers. He was on the staff from 2001-2010 and coached outside linebackers for the final six years of his tenure. Tarver ran the defense in Oakland for three years and the Raiders never finished better than 28th in the league in points allowed over that span. If NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis make healthy returns in 2015, Tarver will find himself working with more talent in his new gig however.

The 49ers still need a defensive coordinator and won’t get a chance to talk to Bengals assistant Vance Joseph about that job after Cincinnati blocked him from interviewing.

  1. Good luck to Tarver! Got a bad deal in Oakland. His defense is what kept us in games a lot of the time. If the offense was slightly better sky would have been the limit for him.

  2. NFL Coaches and front office executives have guaranteed lifetime employment. They’re essentially playing a shell game. Get fired for
doing a horrible job? No problem you’re buddy or family member has a job for you on another team. It’s the same thing every year with the same coaches. The NFL not only needs the Rooney Rule interviews, they need a College Rule and maybe a High School Rule to bring in new blood new strategies to their “old buddy, nepotism” coaches fraternity

  3. I would say being a great coach is the same as what all the great Chefs say about cooking: It comes down to QUALITY ingredients. He’s got depth and talent to work with.

  4. Big step down for Tarver. Going from a classy organization to dirtbag.org
I thought you had to be a loser scumbag to join the Niners.

Best of luck Tarver and thanks for your service.

  5. Seems like my 9ers are bringing back alot of the coaches we had when we sucked..harbaugh came with his staff and won immediately..i dont see how going back to these coaches we already had is making our team better.
