Vince Wilfork: Bill Belichick has turned into a big softy

Apparently, it’s not just adorable children and monkey puppets which can bring out the softer side of Bill Belichick.

Veteran defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said he’s seen the generally gruff Belichick change over the years.

“Yeah, I’ve seen the difference in Bill in the 11 years that I have been here, and I tell him he is getting soft,” Wilfork said, via Jeff Legwold of “But this is a different era of football now — with how the team has shaped up and how a lot of guys are younger guys.

“You don’t really have that veteran team that he used to have. When I first came in the league, he had a veteran team that didn’t take much to get those guys going. But if I have to say anything, I think over the years he got a soft heart. He’s more understanding now.”

That change in approach has been out of necessity, as this is a far younger team than he’s brought to the Super Bowl in the past. Wilfork and Tom Brady are the only players left from their last Super Bowl win, which means Belichick had to adjust.

“I think Bill had to do a good job of that ever since I’ve been in the league because we’ve changed so much,” Wilfork said. “We were a veteran team. [Then] it was a younger team — at one point we were the youngest team in the league. So I think he had to try to find the identity in what works for that team. And I think he’s done a great job over the years of doing that.

“But at the end of the day, he is still Bill. He coaches the same way. He demands everything the same way. But I think he’s got a little soft heart now. Over time, he got a little softer, though.”

That doesn’t always come through, however.

  1. BB is one of the greatest HCs ever. Did I miss something about him being charged with deflating the footballs? If I am not mistaken the Colts said they got beat fair. Why didn’t the NFL when notified months before do nothing? Why didn’t the officials who touch the ball notice?

  2. I go back to that speech he made about how they were the best AFC team during the regular season, the best AFC team during the postseason, and that they’d met every challenge he’d put before them. That’s stuff he never says to them in meetings, but to hear him say it on national television put a fire inside them that’s going to be hard to put out. That he risked angering the league (and probably did) by sticking up for his guys shows you why even the rookies would run through brick walls for him.

  3. It is called perception. The public has a perception of him from his press conferences which he hates and the players who are with him everyday see a different side.

Hate him all you want but why do some many ex players who went on to play for other organizations still love him?

    Best HC in the NFL

  4. Everyone should know it’s not the genius Bellacheat that coaches the Patriots……it’s Ernie Adams, the cheater up in the booth. He was the man behind Spygate and nobody knows what he does.

  5. something nobody ever mentions is that he has 2 players from his last super bowl winning team,
granted one of them is the QB, but he essentially
has returned to the Super Bowl 3 times with an entire roster being overturned…..that Cat can

  6. Belichick’s been coach of the Pats for 15 years

He’s fired traded and cut hundreds of players coaches and employees

Clearly he’s among the most hated figures in sports with fans and media talking heads who cater to them CONVINCED he routinely cheats

Sooooo – exactly WHY hasn’t there NOT been even ONE out of the hundreds of those disgruntled former employees who has come forward to say they saw cheating or even the suspicion of cheating?

And why hasn’t the media given even a shred of attention to that fact amid the innuendo of these last 2 weeks?

Fans just can’t accept this – at worst he violated a new 2006 rule in the first game of the 2007 season

And because the Commissioner prefers to let ignorant fans remain ignorant about why coordinators cover their mouths, Belichick has been tarred and feathered as guilty until proven innocent

  7. Funny game pro football
    Serious home town jingoism
    Face it
New England will always love BB And TB
Everyone else can hate them to their hearts content
Nothing anyone says on this board will ever change anything
Haters should enjoy all the late season heartbreak in NE the past ten years
Nothing worse than watching a team give the max go to the edge and lose
    So enjoy it haters
But we have BB and TB for 15 years and a team that had always left it all on the field
    Where is your hero?
