Vermeil blames “poor management” for changes in San Francisco

Former Eagles, Rams and Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil doesn’t care for the way Jim Harbaugh was treated on the way out the door in San Francisco.

Vermeil said on PFT Live that the 49ers should have shown enough respect for the work Harbaugh did to hold onto him.

“San Francisco was a mess before Jim Harbaugh took over. He straightened it out,” Vermeil said. “To me, that should never happen.”

Vermeil believes that if the 49ers’ management is committed to winning, then the 49ers need to find a way to make things work with a successful coach like Harbaugh.

“To me, it’s poor management. It’s probably more personal than anything. But if you’re mature you’ve got to be able to work those things out,” Vermeil said.

The 49ers’ management couldn’t work things out with Harbaugh. If Jim Tomsula doesn’t have the kind of success in San Francisco that Harbaugh did, plenty of San Francisco fans will agree with Vermeil, and blame owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke for poorly managing Harbaugh’s departure.

  1. Biggest red flag isn’t really how Harbaugh was treated as much as who they’ve replaced him with. I get the guy may be a total pain to work with but they dumped him and his very good staff and replaced it with something resembling NFL Europe. They have an assistant who wasn’t even coaching when he got their call. It’s almost like something out of the movie Major League.

  2. “If Jim Tomsula doesn’t have the kind of success in San Francisco that Harbaugh did, plenty of San Francisco fans will agree with Vermeil, and blame owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke for poorly managing Harbaugh’s departure.”

Understatement of the year. “Plenty”? How about, ALL.

  3. This San Francisco not only already agrees with Vermeil, but I had that opinion four weeks ago. I’m willing to wait and see how this goes, but on paper I am having a tough time maintaining any faith in the ability of the team’s owner and upper management to run an NFL team.

Thank goodness for my Giants and Warriors.

  4. Are you finally starting to pick up on that? Man, I was okay with Tomsula, and the other coaches. Offense was the problem and it is not fixed.

  5. NFC West 2015

    1)Seahawks 12-4
    2) Cardnals 11-5
    3) Rams 9-7
    4) Santa Clara 6-10

-Problem is they are getting rid of the wrong guys. Should have kept Alex Smith and should have kept Harbaugh instead they keep Colin “The Camel” Kapenick and Trent “Yes Sir May I Wipe Your Butt Mr. York” Balke.

It is simple York wants to do things his way becuase he is a moron and can’t listen to any body but his own inflated silver spoon fed ego.

  6. It was Eddie Jr.’s shady casino bribery incident that led to the plea agreement which forced Eddie Jr. to hand over the 49ers to Jed’s mom.

  7. First off who else do you blame but the owner and his hand picked lacky….It would be cool if the first televised preseason home game fans don’t enter the stadium until the start of the second quarter…Maybe Dork and Baalke would get the message…I don’t think they read PFT …..

  8. The problem here is Jed “little Napoleon” York. Nobody wants to work for someone they don’t respect…and know that his inexperience and Napoleon complex could cost you your job even though you excelled.

He had at best 1 year of actual work experience before his dad gave him the reigns and said to come manage an NFL franchise….good luck with that.

It’s comical to see how many people are turning down jobs with the Niners. It could be a number of years until they are relevant again.

  9. NFL’s Lack of Integrity – Have you ever watched Alex Smith? He won’t throw passes more than ten yards. Kaepernick was the right choice. The ceiling on Kaepernick is exponentially higher than Smith.

  10. While it does look peculiar for a team to run off the guy who was their savior just a couple of years before; look at Denver. They canned a guy who has taken them deep in the playoffs 3 years in a row. Then they replaced him with a guy who couldn’t get anything going despite one of the best rosters in the league. And, the guy has serious health issues. Huh?

  11. “’If Jim Tomsula doesn’t have the kind of success in San Francisco that Harbaugh did, plenty of San Francisco fans will agree with Vermeil, and blame owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke for poorly managing Harbaugh’s departure.’

    8-8 should be manageable

  12. Raise your hand if you think Jim Tomsula will ever win more than 8 games in a season coaching the 9ers.

This guy is going to be another shining example of the Great Lieutenant, Horrible General syndrome.

I feel bad for 9er fans, there’s a lot of talent on that roster that’s about to go to waste the next few seasons.

  13. This is the most obvious statement I’ve heard in terms of the NFL all year. Harbaugh may be an annoying turd sometimes but the dude was smart and led the 49ers back to relevance no way in hell the Ron Jeremy knockoff comes even close to what he did. I actually feel bad for the 49ers and their fans. That’s not an easy task either.

  14. I was in San Fran last week on business and was out at a few bars talking to some nice locals. They’re PISSED. Jed/Trent are on a very short rope when it comes to public opinion.

  15. I’m a Cowboys fan, but this looks to have derailed what could have been one of the best ongoing rivalries ever, in SF vs. Seattle.

Who knows, that may still return to life, but it’s hard to see Tomsula having the same kind of success as Harbaugh, especially in a division that looks like it will be pretty unforgiving for years to come. This change casts a shadow over every current aspect of the team’s game, none of which seem to have been upgraded, and that’s going to be very tough to make a success from.

I wish Tomsula the best, but he’s got one heck of an assignment.

  16. Worst ownership in professional sports. So bad even the wr coach of philly refused to talk with them. Turned gold to sheet twice. Arrogant but stupid, picking coaches from the Kmart reject files. I’ve only been a fans since the 50’s but the yorks I truly believe don’t like football. Baalke is joe Thomas 2, and Tomsula makes wade Phillips in Dallas look like Vince Lombardi. They truly need to sell the team to owners who like this game not soccer. It worked for the Giants warriors and seattle. Many of us endured through Cohan and Rowell, but I hate to admit that the yorks are worse.

Thats all well and good, but the thing about potential is that if you don’t ever realize it, which appears to be the case with Colon Fumblepick, it is worthless…

  19. Lmao. Let it burn. Let the fans get more angry. They’ll be competing with the rams for last place.
But who cares they have wine and WiFi at their stadium every ten feet. Please grab your brochure of when to cheer

  20. Jed York cares about one thing $$$$$$$$$$$. He could care less about integrity, class, winnng etc. He got the stadium he wanted and where he wanted it, hosting the super bowl next year at Levi. Coach Harbaugh is a peasant to him along with all the 49er faithful. Coach Tomsula is set up for failure if he doesn’t produce like Harbaugh and the odds of him meeting those expectations are slim to none. We couldn’t even get a legitimate O.C. nobody wants to walk into this chaos. Very frustrating as a 49er fan to watch this implosion…. Thanks Jed

  21. They didn’t lose all those players on defense – Willis etc. Coaches coach but players play and with the talent they have on defense they will still be hard to score on. I wouldn’t write them completely off just yet as far as being competitive. Raiders went to the superbowl with Bill freaking Callahan as the HC.

  22. With Harbaugh it looked like Seattle/Santa Clara would be a legit rivalry for the next decade. As much as I hated him (and his sister John), you can’t discredit the attitude change Harbaugh brought to that mediocre organization. His only fault may have been pushing for Colin Sackorpick one year too early….although I can see Balke being for that too.

  23. Yes, Shame on them!

What’s even worse for 49ers fans, is that I think that puppet show they called a coach search was contrived….. Baalke wanted Tomasula before they let Harbaugh go.

It’s been a very long time since I have heard of prospective coaches declining to join the 49ers organization. But I heard it this time.

  24. Vermeil has been around the block a time or two and can be honest because he’s not looking for work. He’s still well connected. Why else do you think coaches are turning down offers to go to SF.

  25. Lost in all of this Harbaugh love: SF was a very poorly coached team on offense by Harb/Roman this year.

Bad game plans, no second half adjustments that worked. Totally out coached on offense in the second half of every loss. Blaine friggin Gabbert had the only Fourth QTR TD Pass this year under Harbaugh/Roman until the finale vs Ariz. Pathetic.
Kap regressed big time, which is his fault… and the coaches.

Harbaugh was sloppy from 2011 onward re: the little things that get you beat vs. the good teams in the playoffs: poor clock management, bad play calling that led to crucial turnovers (Sherman’s pick on a play that was not necessary with plenty of time left to call 2-3 better ones).

The poor clock mgt., burning timeouts, delay of games….these things never got fixed in 4 years of Harbaugh.

In short, he’d still be there if they won this year. It all came down to 2014 because he refused some nice contract extensions dating all the way back to his year 1 on the contract.

He basically got fired by York because he didn’t win this year and he was a pain in the ass. Some key players were tuning him out too.

He was very good to great in 2011-2013, but the act got old. He wears people out and has no fail safe in his personality to try to work with people like upper mgt. Ask USD and Stanford. The stories are legendary. Guess what: he left those places too. There’s a shelf life to Harbaugh. It was time for every one to move on.

Don’t bash Tomsula until he has proven worthy of being criticized (like a W-L record).

A big year in 2014 would have cured all of this, but it didn’t happen. Time to get over it. Drafting well will help people forget Harbaugh. It’s up to Baalke to make that happen.

  26. Vermeil is absolutely correct. Baalke’s ego ruined the best coach we’ve had since George Seifert.

  27. Correction MDS, 49er fans, Raider Fans, NFL fans, most people that remotely follow the game don’t need to wait to see if Tomsula has success, its pretty clear now. EVERYONE blames boy wonder and Balkee for messing things up…..AGAIN!!!!

Last time Daddy York was the one messing everything up he had to get out of the public eye and make Jed the face of the franchise. He messed up the only thing the York ownership ever did right…Hiring Harbaugh.

  28. It’s definitely poor management. Which makes it amazing to me how Jim Harbaugh was able to win there without ignoring and resisting every buffoonish ideas that came from that clown front office.

    Harbaugh made the 49ers elite.

Harbaugh got them a new stadium by winning games at an historic clip and increasing the value of the 49ers brand. I mean they had more fans in Dallas than in America’s team.

Without Harbaugh the 49ers under the Yorks’ ownership is complete joke. Just look at every single decision they’ve made since Harbaugh left the 49ers. It’s the mother of all buffoonery. I mean their whole coaching staff is filled with desperate coaches who are holding on to their NFL careers for dear life.

  29. Wait, the guys who just fired a great coach (who got that very talented roster to finally play to their potential) and hired a guy who can’t even talk aren’t good at running a football program? Weird. And it’s any surprise that they can’t find coaches that will take a job in that organization?

  30. As a Hawks fan this reminds me of the feeling I had when Holmgren and Russkle had their falling out after the Hutch debacle. He goes 4-12 his last year then Jim Mora takes over and it seemed he didn’t have a clue and was in over his head. He went 5-11 and it felt hopeless. This was such a bad move letting Harbaugh go and Tomsula didn’t express a strong philosophy when interviewed by local reporters in what should have been an exciting time. He just seemed in over is head. Such a great rivalry I hope it doesn’t go away.

  31. This has all played out perfectly for the Yorks. With the talent the Niners have Tomsula should be able to squeak out a 6-8 win season. That will be compared to Harbaughs 8 win season, the front office will just choose to forget about the 3 NFC Championship games and the 1 Superbowl. The Yorks will also be making LOADS of money. The Yorks only concern would be a 2-14 style season but I do not see that happening unless the players revolt….. hmm

The upcoming season is going to be an absolute train wreck.

When Dick Vermeil calls you out, that’s something, never heard him badmouth anyone.

People gave you thumbs down but you have a point. The team was tuning out Harbaugh. Look at Crabtree and Davis this year for example.

Coaches don’t matter? Tell that to Bears fans! They have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball but have the 7th pick in the draft because of poor coaching and lack of real leaders

  35. The 49ers fired a guy who coached the team to 3 NFCCG and 1 SB in 4 years and they kept the guy who wrote the following on a piece of paper a few days before the 2012 NFL Draft:

49ers First Round Pick – WR AJ Jenkins (Illinois)

Uhhhh, yeah York fired the wrong guy and the fans will pay the price for the next decade.

  36. Vermeil is only saying what everybody knows. A rich entitled kid showed a man with real experience the door because he didn’t feel respected.

Respect can’t be bought, but yes-men can.

  37. Nothing says winning and great ownership like firing one of the top 3 coaches in the NFL simply because he isn’t a yes-man like you want.

Can’t say I am surprised as that is what I expect from a 34 year old who inherited the team from his mommy who got the team from her brother simply because he had some legal issues.

I sometimes wonder what this team may have done over the last 14 years had Eddie still owned it and not the incompetent and childish Yorks.

  38. Green Bay’s not in the Super Bowl because Wilson had a better game than Rodgers (yards and ypa), Lynch had a better game than Lacy, GB was horrid on 3rd down, and despite 5 turnovers, 3 of which were in the red zone, they only managed 1 TD. The game was given to them by Wilson’s worst day as a pro….and they still lost.

Take away the turnovers and Seattle walks away 35-13.

  39. No matter what the critics say or how many times they say it, Tomsula, Mangini and Chryst are not bad coaches. All three guys are assistants from previous seasons. They know the personnel — weaknesses and strengths. And more importantly, they’ll have more talent to work with then 2/3 of the NFL.

Even without Willis, Bowman and Aldon Smith (out 9 games), the 49ers defense finished 4th. With everybody back, Mangini could easily field a top 5 defense. And since the offense was already a hot mess, losing Greg Roman is not a negative.

The perfect storm is a super talented team with very low expectations. If the other 31 teams fall into this trap of thinking the 49ers are just another JV team, look out.

  40. Sad thing is is after the power mad Baalke is eventually fired he will still land on his feet somewhere, leaving a burned out dumpster fire of an organization behind.

  41. If Harbaugh is such a great coach, why couldn’t he fix the obvious problems that were clear from the second half of the first game. They did not get better as the season went on. Never fixed any of the glaring problems. Let’s give the new group a chance.

  42. I don’t think Harbs wanted to stay. The fact that days after he finished the season he was the new Michigan coach kind of says it all. I kind of hope this rag tag band of coaches :”The Apple Dumpling Gang” or “the Magnificent 7” ? can be lights out successful ,we shall see. It is official, the 49ers lost the press conference and apparently the off season ,because of no big name hires. The Boy king and Baalke are now on the hot seat and will be held accountable. The York’s should sell the team if the 49ers become an embarrassment . The team was dropped in the York’s lap so they should get out of the football business if they don’t really care about the team. I await the 2015 season.

  43. I don’t believe the franchise was a mess when Harbaugh took over, the team was coming into its own. Would have been nice to give Singletary another year or two. Yes Harbaugh can coach, had some success with Kap but he wasn’t able to sustain it or win a SB like I thought he would after his first year. One thing that’s for sure is there won’t be a SB any time soon.

  44. Couldn’t happen to a better franchise. The 49ers are getting what they deserve. The owner and G.M. are complete idiots. How do you get rid of a coach who’s had the success that Harbaugh had since being hired. They should’ve kept their mouth shut and let Jim do his job. Soon the Los Angeles Rams will once again dominate SF.

    _______________

Have you ever seen Kaepernick go through more then one progression?

    _______________

Nope but I’ve seen Alex Smith go through three in litte over a second, avoid pressure, then run for a first down.

  46. It is interesting that the OC the 49ers braintrust picked was Kaepernick’s personal coach last year, i.e., the QB coach. If Kaep digressed with this guy as the QB coach, what’s up with the promotion?

  47. Can you idiots quit calling them the Santa Clara 49ers? Should we also say the Arlington Cowboys and the New Jersey Jets/Giants? They will always be the San Francisco 49ers.

  48. “plenty of San Francisco fans will agree with Vermeil, and blame owner Jed York and General Manager Trent Baalke for poorly managing Harbaugh’s departure.”

Plenty of fans already do – and not for “poorly managing” Harbaugh’s departure but for allowing it at all. The 49ers ownership threw away a good head coach with one of the highest winning percentages in NFL history and made an unknown DL coach his replacement.

  49. Personally, I still can’t believe they ran Harbaugh off. As a Seahawk fan i was looking forward to years of a great rivalry between our great teams. When i was growing up & Montana came onto the scene & my Seahawks were still looking at decades of mediocrity to come, the 9ers were the epitome of class & the road map to how to build a franchise & the single greatest coach I’ve personally witnessed in Bill Walsh.

Fast forward to present & the front office in San Francisco resembles something you would expect to see out of that team in the east bay. You almost have to look at their management like you would Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, the late Al Davis, etc. I totally agree with one of the above comments that talented coaches no longer see the 9ers as a good opportunity. It’s gonna be hard for York to attract to level coaches after the blunder he just pulled with Harbaugh. Tragic!

I guess the next great nfc west rivalry will be between the Hawks & Cardinals or possibly the Rams. Sorry but out just doesn’t have the same luster. Shame on you York. Balke is just a joke to begin with. He’s done nothing in this league. He didn’t assemble the talent on the current team he just found a way to drive a wedge between the owner & coach. What a joke!!!

  50. I have heard from several players around the league and in the niners organization that Harbaugh grinded on them and did loose the locker room as well as the front office. Moving Tomsula in is more of a move for the players, than the front office. Part of Kaepernicks problem was weapons and one weapon he had his rookie year that opened the field for Crabtree and V. Davis was (none of you ever bring this up) Delanie Walker. Half the locker room thought he was the better TE. He leaves SF and goes on to be a pro bowl TE for the Titans. We will see

  51. Jim Harbaugh was about as great a coach as he was a QB he definitly was not a guru , he hand picked Krap a pistol runing QB that no way in hell fits in a WCO west coast offense , he had him for 4 years and never taught him the 2 most important aspects of QBs 1. footwork how to manuver in the pocket 2. how to read defense. then made the worst decision in 49er history he screwed Alex Smith and thats the day he lost his locker room players just could not trust him no longer Krap was not ready at the time and he made him great before doing anything , after Smith got hurt he sent Roman to Nevada during bye week and one week to master a pistol offense good luck with that Smith was the perfect WCO QB if the so called Guru didnt see that then he got what he deserved . the guy that we should all be crying about is the real man who made Harbaugh look great and took us to the playoffs with his savy coaching was Vic Fangio and his defense the best DC in the NFL which is probly the second worst move in 49er history the only other dissaster move was sending Haley to Dallas we had the best team in the NFL and the worse QB in the league if they had stuck with Smith at QB we possibly have 2 more trophys he mastered the WCO in 2 months and proved it going 13-3 with first time in his career with decent coaches ill take that so called game manager over Krap any day example Dilfer won a superbowl bcuz of baltimores defense he did just enough not to lose the game Smith coulda done the same , u all cried when we used to drive for 8 min and get a FG but my defense was resting and the opponents QB cant score when hes on the bench watching Alex protecting the ball and using up the clock , boy oh boy what the hell was that offense we ran last year it wasnt the WCO ( not 1 single screen play or quick slants ) big part of WCO it wasnt even a pistol offense IT WAS A JOKE they were so screwed up and lost that Krap didnt have a clue what he supposed to do , 4 years and still lost , hell Harbaugh did Smith a favor by sending him to Reid a real WCO coach = Smith PRO BOWLER screw Harbaugh and Roman they rode Vic Fangios coat tail and screw Jed York 2 days before he announced Tomasulo John Fox was available are u kidding me that woulda of bveen an Upgrade the 3rd best coach in the NFL Chicago swooped him up no questions asked and Took my Fangio with him those 2 guys shoulda been here this is an absolute NITEMARE , i havnt missed a game in 47 years scince Kezar but 49ers are all about money not football just look what they did to us with that Levis Stadium crap took us right out of hunters point and stuck us in the middle of the corprate world ,,,,,,I HATE SANTA CLARA sell that crap to the Raiders and bring my Niners back home Jed York im holding u accoutable this is Singletary all over again niners4ever
