Las Vegas sports book takes “seven-figure wager” on Patriots

AP

You may very well like the Patriots to win Super Bowl XLIX.

But you probably aren’t quite as confident as the bettor who placed an absolutely gigantic wager on New England at an MGM Resorts International sports book in Nevada.

According to Micah Roberts of “The Linemakers” of Sporting News, MGM took a “seven-figure wager” on the Patriots over the Seahawks in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Jay Rood, the vice president of race and sports at MGM, told PFT the bet was a wager on New England at pick ’em.

MGM did not receive a single million-dollar bet on last year’s Super Bowl, Rood said.

The Patriots are one-point favorites over Seattle at numerous Nevada sports books, including MGM’s properties, which include The Mirage and Bellagio.

  1. deenchaz says: “The arrogant verse the cheaters, may honesty prevail.”

The Seadderall Seahawks lead the NFL in suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs since Cheat Carroll became coach in 2010. Soooooo…who are the REAL cheaters?

  2. I feel like they did a movie about this somewhere. Something about the kicker hearing about massive bets on them winning and ending up missing the kick or something?

I blame Goodell! Finding anyway he can to make sure the Pats lose after the mess generated by the media these last couple weeks! I mean, that’s really only 1/44th of his salary, so no biggie.

Or maybe I’m just tin foil hatting a bit…

  3. Funny the Media and NfL have not discussed suspensions for GB Car. Or Minn. I guess ball tampering is okay if you are actually guilty. Better to be accused of cheating by losers than to be a rat fink like harbitch.

    GB?

Rodgers says he has the balls over inflated before they get inspected.

Brady has the air let out after they are inspected. See the difference Jethro?

  5. The bet is interesting (as one who did not place it) only if it is a life changing bet at that amount.
If you have 60 mil today, would you really notice if you had 61 or 59 mil Monday AM?

Now the people betting 5 – 10 grand. They often end up better off (or more deeply screwed) Monday.
Out of debt, enough for a biz venture/dream, or get a bookie off your back after a bad season.

Just saying it’s more likily this bettor doesn’t really have realitive much on the line

  6. You know the economy is finally improving once people start getting absolutely stupid with their Benjamins.

  7. And that wager moved the line – a point! That tells you how much “legal” money is being bet on this game.

  8. What I find interesting is that a $1mil bet on Pats is now public knowledge… Seems Vegas would release this info to get more folks on the Pats and then boom the Seahawks win big.

  9. I hate the seachickens but they are the better team. I think it will be closer than last year but I really don’t understand why everyone is picking the pats. They badly beat a one man Colts team that had no business being in a conference championship game. Seattle played as bad as a game as it possibly can and still advanced.

  10. The one thing John Fox said that resonates about Seattles D, “They are very fast and you can not simulate it in practice”. The Pats are much like Denver was last year on offense, SLOW. As for the Pats on D they will do what every D tries to do against Seattles O. Get up the field around L&R tackles and hold contain to force RW up into and out of his throwing lanes. This is the only way you have a chance against him but you have got to have a spy which free’s up #82. The Pack did a great job here but in the end Seattle wore them out like they normally do. The Pats are going to get dominated.

Giants. But why let facts get in the way?

  12. Win or lose, this guy is a bloody idiot. He should invest his seven figures into something meaningful. Hopefully MGM takes all his cold hard cash and he ends up looking like that poker player Drinan after his bad beat.

  13. So of the 267 games played this season…THIS one is the best game to lay a 7-figure bet? I’m gonna guess there were better opportunities along the way.

  14. Just clicked on this site first time today and I gotta say that i`m so tired of the same nonsense about the patriots are only good because they cheat. i hate them too but I think it’s time to just admit they are good because they freaking really ARE THAT GOOD. brady is amazing because he can win no matter who he has to throw to and the hoody seems to be able to plug anyone into his lineup and come out on top. it’s pretty mind boggling if you ask me .

  15. They may be rich, but they aren’t that smart. The line started moving towards New England within hours of the championship games. It became very obvious that if you wanted to bet on the Patriots, you should get your bet down fast, and if you wanted to bet on Seattle, you should wait to see how far the line would move.

Whoever placed this bet gave up 2.5-3 points from where the lines started, while anyone who waited on a Seattle bet is now 3.5-4 points ahead of where they would have been 12 days ago.

How important could that be? The Brady/Belichick Patriots have been in five Super Bowls, and the margins at the end of the games have been 3, 3, 3, 3 and 4 points.

  16. I hope everyone realizes it used to be YOUR money on this bet until it was squeezed out of you at the gas pump. This is obviously someone from the Middle East with lots of oil money in his pockets who will just laugh if it’s lost.

  17. Lol. Seahawks are going to destroy the Patriots. The Patriots won a garbage division and then beat 2 garbage teams, that the Browns almost beat (both Indy & Balt) to get there.

Final score will be closer than the domination Seattle will drop on the Patsies

    Seahawks 31 Patsies 20

  18. The Fact that pft didn’t report his name, means it wasn’t a celebrity. Everyone had been betting on the Pats ever since dismantling the Colts. Hence the line change over the past 2 weeks.

This is not a good sign for the Pats as Vegas doesn’t make their money by losing bets. However the only reason betting against the public doesn’t work as much as you’d think, is because it’s all about the ka-ching. No one ever knows where the most money is being played, and that’s more important as according to the numbers, this guy is just 1 person among many in the count toward the public.

After this news we now can assume that not only is the public betting on the Pats, but the most money is betting on them too…again, not a good sign for the Pats!

  19. 70% of the bets so far are on the PATS. Not a good sign for the Seattle

NE shreds them with the short pass game and a healthy dose of Blunt and Grey.

Fix is in. Looking forward to explaining to my son that cheaters never win, except if the commissioner is in your owners back pocket. what a joke. Enjoy your sport morons, i’m out.

while you’re at it, explain to him that only jealous losers spend all day trolling the Pats instead of playing with their kids

  21. To the Arron Rodgers apologists on here, riddle me this. When he slips those over inflated balls past the officials does he use them? With all this talk of insuring the integrity of the game, once he takes a snap with that fat ball he’s guilty as the day is long. His intent is to get illegals ball into the game. Thus giving his team a competitive advantage. When the cheating occurred, prior to or after inspection, is irrelevant. His intent is to cheat. You condoning his behavior makes you a hypocrite. He should be fined and suspended. Anyone who helped him cheat should be disciplined.

  22. i have two theories on betting. one is that the game is effected by bets. if there is too much betting on one side that side will definitely lose, so that the book makes money. i wonder if anyone tracks this? or is it reported anywhere? Does someone know?

2nd theory is that many of the complainers from the losing team’s fans are those who lost money on betting on games.

i am so happy that i don’t have to make a living betting on these games.

some advice to those who don’t like the league the way it is run – put pressure on the advertisers, say that you will boycott them, they are the only ones who can effect real change

Ha! The short passing game plays to Seattle’s strength.

  26. Pats are at a big disadvantage because they’ve not played the Hawks recently.

    Look at the record.

Denver gets destroyed in the SB, loses in OT in Seattle in game 2.

GB gets stomped game 1, loses in OT game 2.

Seattle presents unique challenges with the read option on offense (& Lynch of course) and length and speed on defense. It takes a team a game to understand that.

To beat the Pats you pass to Browner’s side, run to Revis’ side. Browner’s slow and Revis doesn’t like to tackle.

Rodgers said he likes the balls hard and over inflated. He also said that the Packers submit those balls to the refs. It is not Green Bay’s responsibility to inspect the balls pre-game. League rules stipulate that the referees inspect the game balls.

It’s not cheating to deliver balls to the officials before the game that have more air, less air, or are otherwise unsuitable for play. That judgment is left to the refs.

Altering those inspected balls before the game would be cheating. And that’s exactly what NE did.

Smart money that wanted Pats grabbed them when line opened +2.5

Your right. It’s not cheating to deliver balls that are over inflated to the officials. It is cheating to use those balls once they get by the officials. With all this talk of insuring the integrity of the game, once he takes a snap with that fat ball he is guilty as the day is long. His intent is to get illegal balls into the game, thus giving his team a competitive advantage. His intent is to cheat. Anyone condoning his behavior is a hypocrite. He should be fined and suspended. Anyone who helped him cheat should be disciplined. He has admitted to cheating. As such, his legacy is tarnished! Place an asterisk by his single Super Bowl win! It doesn’t bother you that you defend a cheater? What does that say about you? Oh yeah…hypocrite.

  33. I have livid in Las Vegas for 35 years and will tell you that sports book take CASH only. A million dollars is a lot of cash.

They will not take a million dollar bet from anybody. Trust me, they knew the bettor. BTW most sports books will not take such a large bet they have limits so that they can move the line. Example the will take say $100,000 at even the next bet at -1/2 the next bet at -1 and so on.

Sports books can and will lose money when the favorites cover. In weeks when four or five large favorites cover it is not just the straight bets but all the parlay and teaser card hit that they will have very large loses.

They still talk about the Steeler vs Cowboy super from the late 70s. The line opened as a small Steeler favorite and closed at Steelers 4 to 41/2. The Steelers won by 4 the books paid almost everybody.

  34. Apparently Belichick, after being informed by the officiating crew of what they will be watching for,has found a wrinkle. A wrinkle so large that he didn’t even bother with a Saturday walk-through of The super bowl game plan stating he felt it wasn’t necessary.
    Stay tuned…

  35. It’s his/her money and fit to spend as please.

BUT doing something like this screws it up for everyone especially here in Las Vegas (like me) and throughout NV to bet on the Super Bowl.

For everyone’s sake. I hope you bet on the Deflatriots on the moneyline to win. Dumb money.

The sharps and the smart money is on the Sea-Chickens. That’s where I got mine.

Good Luck! Don’t care who wins just as long as my bets cash in.
