Packers fire special teams coach Shawn Slocum

The Packers gave up a touchdown on a fake field goal and saw the Seahawks recover a key onside kick during their NFC Championship game loss nearly two weeks ago and special teams coach Shawn Slocum gave up his job on Friday.

There was some talk that a change could be made following the loss and the team released an announcement on Friday afternoon that Slocum has been released. He’d been on the staff since Mike McCarthy became the head coach in 2006.

“I would like to thank Shawn for all of his contributions over the past nine years,” McCarthy said in a statement. “He was a positive contributor to our success, including helping us win Super Bowl XLV. We wish Shawn, Michelle and their family the best moving forward.”

The Packers hired former Florida and Illinois coach Ron Zook as an assistant special teams coach before the 2014 season, but there’s been no announcement about whether he’ll be elevated to replace Slocum.

Yeah, because it’s his fault they got rolled for 21 points in the last 7 minutes of the NFC Championship game.

    Losers.

    ——————————————————————–

Yup it was all based on that one game, and not the fact that the Packer’s Special Teams unit finished 32nd in the league… Not to mention that the Special Teams unit has been down hill since the Superbowl…

CPR is for heart failure. Not choking.
With choking it would be the Heimlich maneuver.

If you’re going to troll, try and do it right.

And are you going to get this comment removed as well?

  4. Mike McCarthy, what a stand up guy. Completely blow the game and then blame it on your coordinator and give him the boot.

You do realize as the head man, you’re responsible for your staff and their preparedness. If this coordinator failed, a huge part of that blame is on you. But I assume you won’t be stepping down?

Were is the part about the Vikings being a Dynasty? Did you actually give up on them?

  6. One down, two to go.

C’mon Ted and get rid of McJoke and Dom.
    You know. Dumber and Dumber.
As long as they are still coaching, the only bowl game Packers players will be going to will be the Pro one.

  7. about time. This has been a long time coming. Poor special teams play over the years and this year was the worst. I believe the Packers had 7 kicks blocked. That is way too high.

People can blame the NFC championship game all they want, that was just the icing on the cake. He should have been gone years ago.

  8. snap0179….correct statement. McCarthy blew it. Timid play-calling. Played “not to lose.” He’s wasting Rodgers just like Sherman wasted Favre.

  9. He’s been awful for years. The special teams have been ranked at or near the bottom of the league nearly every year he’s had the job.

Blocked kicks, terrible kick coverage, getting caught off-guard in obvious fake situations (i.e. the Seahawks lining up for a field goal in a two-possession game late in the third quarter, when a field goal WOULD STILL LEAVE THEM TWO SCORES BEHIND…. Good lord, even I saw that fake coming the moment they sent the kicking team out there.)

Hiring a random fan off the street to replace him would probably be enough of an improvement to win one more game.

  10. The Minnesota Vikings impending dynasty will hit the NFL by storm, but don’t say you didn’t hear it here first.

Talent wise, we easily have the best team in the NFL and arguably one of the best teams of all time.

There’s nothing stopping us this year, multiple super bowls will be coming to Minneapolis with the emergence of Teddy Bridgewater and Mike Zimmer’s coaching staff. They are setting themselves up to dominate the NFC for the decade.

Every team will start trying to emulate the Vikings in every way.
Every fan will be jealous of Vikings nation.
Every owner will be jealous they don’t own a historic future dynasty team like the Vikings.
Every coach will fear traveling to Minneapolis to face this legendary Vikings squad.
Every other teams players wish they’d have been drafted by the superior Vikings roster.
Every GM will wish they had the drafting smarts that Rick Spielman has.
Every blade of grass will wish it would have been grown in the new gorgeous stadium that belongs to Minnesota.

  11. The fake field goal TD was unforgiveable but that’s on McCarthy. Should have left the regular defense on the field and conceded the FG.

  12. I agree seahawkboymike, the defense packed it in, they tried to run out the clock….ineptly with poor play-calling, and they had bad breaks with the onside kick and coin toss. In OT the defense was already shell-shocked and couldn’t believe what was happening. Plenty of blame to go around.

  13. It’s that sort of finger pointing and blame game as to why they lost that game in the first place. The Seahawks, no matter how many mistakes they made for 55 minutes never lost faith in each other and supported each other unconditionally and it paid off with a win. All the Packers do is yell and blame each other internally and tell the public how they beat themselves.

This attitude needs to change right at the top and work its way down, and maybe this talented group would have more than 1 Super Bowl in an 8 year span.

  14. McCarthy’s a joke. The only reason he hasn’t received harsher scrutiny for how he managed that game is because of the media’s obsession with Deflate-Gate. Not going for it 4 different times on 4th and 1 along with not letting possibly the best QB in the NFL throw 1 pass late in the 4th quarter to seal a 12 point game is the reason they lost. He should fire himself.

  15. Now McJoke either needs to be replaced or else hire an OC who can call in plays better than he can.
But I somehow think he is way too arrogant to do that as well as playing just to not lose instead of playing to win.
    Pathetic.
My Packers should have been in at least 1 other SB by now including this one.
As long as we have McJoke, our bragging rights and pride is gone.
I cannot bring myself to wear my Packers winter hat out in public anymore thanx to the embarrassing loss in Seattle.

How the heck did McJoke manage to beat the Vikings?
As long as he is the coach, your odds of beating the Packers look very good.

  20. I feel for the True Packers fans out there.
As a Vikings fan, I have had my heart broken in that matter. The thing is, you have to keep cheering the team you love, year in, and year out. I hate the Trolling nature some fans on both sides have taken lately. Those people are not fans, and they are no better than a School yard Bully.
My New Years resolution is to try an be a better fan,
and not get sucked into those situations.
When the games are tight and go to the end, it is an amazing experience.
I do feel bad for Coach Slocum, (Are you Free Mr Humphries?) But after 9 years he simply got complacent this year, and the other teams had him figured out!
He would probably be the first to admit it.. And become a better Coach for the firing.
See you on the field next year…

  21. I wouldn’t worry about this guy… with a last name like that he’ll still be plenty popular with the ladies

  22. Pretty dumb to fire the special teams coach, that last onside kick wasnt the coaches fault, at the end of the day the players and team were definitely playing not to lose…. the play they should look at is when the green bay defense intercepted the ball and instead of running he slid down to make sure he dont lose… which gave way too much time for seahawks to come back….. their demeanor is what made green bay lose, not this coach.. not that i know him or whatever, im just saying.

    ====================

I’m not a Pack fan, but I can tell you that nobody cares about your respect, so kindly keep it and leave. Your team’s gonna get punked in the Superbowl.

  24. What took them so long? The way the Packers’ special teams were caught flatfooted in the Seattle game was a disgrace. Slocum should have been fired immediately at the end of the playoff game.

  25. Everyone is quick to blame McCarthy which he should get a majority of the blame but to say he should be fired it just plain stupid.

Won the nfc north 4 times in a row
They have been to the playoffs 7 out of the last 8 years.
They have been in 3 nfc championships since he has been there. Before that the packers hadn’t been to an NFC championship game since 97.

  26. Gutless. I wouldn’t want to a coach for this team anyway. It’s gonna be hard to top the choke score of that game! Thanks cheese!

  27. Excuses. Your team quit. The Seahawks were banking on not getting the onside, they still had the two minute warning and timeouts. Packers were scared, would have ran the ball 3 times for -2 yards just like the last two possessions. The better team finished out the game and won. GET OVER IT. Really starting to think Packers fans whine more then Vikings and Niner fans. Pathetic.

  28. It’s Bostick’s fault (befuddled offside kick) that the Packers lost, as much as it was Coach McCarthy’s fault, who did not “go for the jugular.” This firing is so dumb.

  29. Lets all hope the Packer can contend for a NFL record 14th World Championship again next year. The McCarthy/Thompson combo has us in the mix nearly every year. And clearly we can play with anybody, anywhere.

    Better football for better people.

  30. Way to create a scapegoat for your atrocious play calling Mike.

Who you really should be fired it McCarthty’s and Lacey’s dietician. Have you seen those two in full profile!

    ——————-

Putting a normal defense out on the field leaves the team open to a running fake for a relatively easy first down. The offense has 9 blockers on the line. If you leave the base defense out there, there’s a very good chance they get pushed around and the holder runs through an open hole.

The field goal coverage team has all the big guys to counter that possibility. All you have to do is tell everyone else to cover the eligible receivers. Instead, Slocum acted like he’d never even heard of a fake field goal before.

  32. Ugh PFT.. The only team to emulate your pathetic Vik queens was my beloved Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl losses. Congrats you’ve set the standard

  33. Gotta love seeing the Vikings fans pounce like they have room to talk trash.

Yeah, the Packers choked. Yet, in the end, they still wound up as the third best team in the league.

Infinitely less satisfying than being the best, but also infinitely more satisfying than being the Vikings. A laughingstock franchise.

One of the only teams that you could say choked worse in an NFC Championship game than the Packers did…… and they did it twice!

Gary Anderson and the 2009 fumble-fest. Good times.

  34. Those of you calling Slocum a scapegoat have not been watching Packers football. Since the Super Bowl win and with the exception of a few players the special teams for GB have been horrible. He should have been fired long before this year. I hate to see anyone lose their job but this needed to happen and should have three years ago!

  35. There were 41 blocked kicks on the NFL this past season.

The Packers had six of them.

This guy should have been fired long before his special teams helped the Packers lose the Seattle game.

  36. No…

But you waited to fire him now. Truth be told, McCarthy is the one who should be fired.

    1. 4th and a foot and you don’t trust Lacy, with Kuhn leading him through the hole for a TD? Who’s fault was that? McCarthy.

    2. You got a one armed cornerback and your team is scared to throw at him? Who’s fault is that? McCarthy.

    3. 4th and 1 at the 50 yard line, up 16-0 and again your scared to run straight ahead for a time consuming 1st down? Who’s fault is that? McCarthy.

  37. Packers are still dreaming of playing in Super Bowl. Perhaps next time have one leg guy Rodger play special team and have Lazzzy and McCarthy play defense, that sure would help Packers win a Super Bowl. Best thing that describes the Packers is they choke every time playing against elite defenses. Wouldn’t mind them getting to Championship game every year bc that’s how far they will only get to and picking 30th every year with busted players.

Hit it right on the head! McCarthy shudda learned that lesson yrs ago. You can’t play “not to lose” in big games. His lack of aggressiveness had more to do with the loss than the Spec teams blunder’s

  40. “He should have no trouble finding work with that Packer Superbowl pedigree.”

Considering they did this AFTER all the other teams filled their staffs, then no.

Fall guy for so many other’s failures.

  41. One of the only teams that you could say choked worse in an NFC Championship game than the Packers did…… and they did it twice!
    ______

Nope. Packers choked away the biggest lead in NFC Championship history, so I’d say that’s the worst. And you keep forgetting about that 2007 game. Remember when Brett shattered your dreams with an OT interception when two other receivers were wide open?

  42. That is the price for playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Old Mike owns that one, I just wonder who will be next? You just let up on them guys.

  43. THANK YOU MIKE MCCARTHY AND THE GREEN BAY PACKERS FOR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON! IT WAS A PLEASURE ATTENDING SOME OF THE GAMES IN PERSON, AND WATCHING THE REST ON THE TUBE.

LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TED THOMPSON DRAFT … AND ANOTHER GREAT SEASON IN 2015.

Coaching in the NFL is a tough business – but as they said in one of the Godfather movies .. “This is the life we have chosen!”

    Go Pack!

  44. A lot can happen in 2 minutes. For example, blowing a 12 point lead to go into overtime where you get beat by a long bomb. In fact, its the second long bomb that russell wilson used to beat the packers with. The first one, for some reason, was called a ‘fail mary’. This second one should erase all doubt about the first one.

Why wont packer fans wake up and realize they are the new punchline in the NFL?

When will they wake up and realize they are not the darlings that they think they are?

  46. You have probably the 2nd best team in the league and you are pouncing on your coaches like a Pack of Wolves..
Remember there are about 28 teams that would change places in a second..
EVERYBODY thought the game was over, Hawks hadn’t done anything all game. They just played Football when their backs were against the wall.

  48. How does Dom Capers still have a job? 2nd and 31 with a 16 pt lead and he rushes 2 and 3 guys and gives up like 40 yds? The defense has been that team’s archilles heel for years now. He’s still living off his defense rep from over a decade ago. Guys like Capers, lovie smith, Steve Spagnuolo, and Jim Haslett have all outlived their usefulness and need to retire and go coach high school teams.

  49. Yeah whats the Vikings GM SPielmaan??? 2 QB’s In first round past three years, Signed free agent washed up QB cassel, Kinda reminds ya of Matt Millen in Detroit with the 6 wide receivers busts he drafted in first round, and we all know where the Lions wound up ,

The team that lost in the NFC Championship game, that has made the playoffs for six straight seasons, including winning a Super Bowl…..

Or the team that can only dream of making the playoffs, has never won a Super Bowl, and whose biggest story of the year was the fact that their star player likes to beat toddlers?

  53. Packers ST ranked #32, 7 kicks blocked, NFC Championship game speaks for itself. Imagine what this team will be in 2015 when special teams is in the middle of the pack or higher.

Hey, at least we ain’t the Vikings…..

(At least we’ll get the Vikings trolls out in force as the Packers players provide lots of good fodder for media week in Santa Clara)

  54. The last game was just the icing on the cake, the Packers ST have been atrocious for years. Slocum is probably a scapegoat to some extent but there is nobody more deserving of that based on his body of work, even before the Packers choked away the NFCCG. Yes, I am a Packers fan and the team choked, no other way to look at it. Our ST’s needed to be improved before that game, this was an obvious area to make a change.

  57. Absolutely the right move. I’m originally from WI, and even as a Pats fan, I still love the Packers.

  58. Wow you viking trolls are a hoot. InTeddy, how many times are you gonna post? I know you’re frozen solid up in MN right now but you got to find something else to occupy your time.

  59. Firing the special teams coach won’t change the fact that the Packers STILL found a way to lose the game and choke unprecedentedly when leading 16-0, not to mention the very generous gift of 5 interceptions during the course of the game. Amazing. My brother-in-law is a HUGE Packer fan, and he and his buddies were drinking it up and celebrating “going to the SB” with that early lead a bit prematurely. Some Packer fans obviously forgot about the second half still needing to be played, and talk about your nightmare scenarios…..

Somebody unfortunately had to be the scapegoat/lightning rod when there are ZERO excuses that will do that historic choke job any justice. And unfortunately for Mr. Slocum, that was the case.

Don’t worry, Packer Fans, the rest of the fans who support the 31 other teams won’t let you live this one down any time soon. You have the title of the biggest choke job in NFL playoff history all to yourselves.

  63. As long as they dont promote Assistant special teams coach Zook – if you dont help the ST develop as an assistant – how can you be expected to get it done as the boss??
Given the coaching losses over the past few years ( Philben, Greene, Macadoo) it is time for some new energetic blood to come into the organization – what better place than as Special teams coach.

  64. YES!!! YES!!!! YES!!!! THE HEADLINE I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR FOR 3 YEARS!! YES!! YES!! CELEBRATION TIME!! PARTY!!! DRINKS ON ME!! YES!!! YES!! YES!! WHOOO HOOO!! I AM SOOO HAPPY!!! THANK YOU!! 65. Slocum had a direct effect on the fake FG for TD conversion. The Seahawks ST Coach used to be an assistant ST coach for the Packers and was fired last year. Morton knew the Packers tendancies on ST and exploited that on the fake FG for TD. Packers has block left side on, with Jones rushing hard. Morton knew that and took advantage of it. House actually could have caught Ryan if Hawk had covered Gilliam. Thats what the final straw was. Slocum was not at fault for Bostick deciding to try to catch the ball instead of block for Nelson who would have caught the ball. But in the 6 years Slocum was ST Coach, Packers were 19th or worse 4 times. So its not just the last game that did it, but it was the final straw.

  66. Also, the Packers had 7 kicks blocked this year, by far the worst in the NFL. That doesnt help either.

  67. Mike McCarthy should have been removed years ago because of his static style of play calling. In order to win you need a coach that is Dynamic. Their are countless games lost directly due to play calling….I recall on game that would have been lost against the bears and the Offensive line convinced the coach to go for it on 4th down….And they made it…..then because they did he went for it again……that right their tells you he is a complete idiot. I would like to see the grand son of Vince Lombardi take over…

  68. This is a start. The real culprit, the man that truly needs to go is NOT Mike McCarthy, but Dom Capers. Say what you will about McCarthy’s conservative play calling. It was too conservative, yes. The problem, I believe, is that he placed too much confidence in the ability of the Packer defense. He was lured into that confidence by a Packer defense that caused multiple turnovers and held the Seahawk offense in check, inexplicably, for the entire game. They’d scored zero points offensively until 4 minutes left in the game. McCarthy thought if he ate the clock, the defense would do enough to stop them from scoring two touchdowns. That was a fatal error, but not unforgivable.

Capers, however, has completely worn out his welcome with me. When the Packers did not step on the Seahawk throats, and put them away early in the game, I knew all too well how it would end. I told all my friends on Facebook that the defense would end up being the reason we lost.

Capers has failed this team again and again. In the 2009 playoff game against the Cardinals and Kurt Warner, Rodgers first start in the post season, he threw for 429 yards and 4 TD, and ran in another score. 45 points should have been enough to win ANY game, but Capers and his prevent defense gave up a whopping 51 points.

Fast forward to 2011. The Packers go 15-1 with one of the best offenses in NFL History. The defense is historically bad, and the blame, the excuse, is the loss of safety Nick Collins. The secondary fell apart without him, but the problem went far beyond the loss of our Pro Bowl safety. We lose to the Giants in the first playoff game after going 15-1. The Packers suffered a cruel blow as Coach Joe Philbin’s son was found dead in the Wisconsin River just a few days before the game. A tight-knit unit, the loss was devastating to the team as a whole. They played flat, understandably emotionally spent. But the defense, again, failed them, this time giving up 37 points to the 10-6 Eli Manning led Giants. The next year, 2012, the Packer defense had NO answer for Colin Kaepernick, who set an NFL record with most rushing yards in ANY game in NFL history by a quarterback. He rushed for a buck eighty, and the Niners gained over 500 yards, the most ever allowed by a Packer defense in a playoff game. The Packers scored 31 points, which SHOULD win most playoff games. But they surrendered 45 points.

51, 37 and 45 points in the three playoff game losses. 133 points surrendered, and average of 44.3 points in three playoff losses. At that point, Capers SHOULD have cashed in any good will earned with the 2010 Super Bowl win.

In the last two losses, the Packer defense has played better. They held the Niners to 23 in 2013, but the Packers were banged up to hell. Rodgers and Cobb had just returned after missing almost half the season each of them. They didn’t have enough to beat a good Niners defense.

So, fast forward to the playoff loss to the Seahawks. The Packer defense did well for 56 minutes. Then, Capers reverted to his old self. And it cost the Packers dearly. After not surrendering a single point all game, they surrendered two touchdowns in a matter of minutes.

The play that I will go to my grave clenching my fists about, the single play that wiped out the bad taste left by 4th and 26 in Philadelphia, should mean the end of Dom Capers. The Packers had the Seahawks in a 3rd and 19 situation. The Seahawk offense had done NOTHING all day. Yet Capers called a prevent defense, and Russell Wilson completed a pass 30 yards downfield. After that, if all started to shift.

How many more seasons of Aaron Rodgers’ career are we going to waste? He’s 31 now. Still in his prime. Get rid of this waste of space Dom Capers. The game has passed him bye. He’s had ample time to push for a pair of middle linebackers worth a damn, and now he needs to be shown the door.

Get a new D Coordinator. Draft a stud middle linebacker that can tackle. Trade for another. Resign Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga. Do that, and I promise you, the Packers will be back in the NFC Championship Game next year.

  69. Maybe some packer hating town should give him a key to their city:) That would be funny .

Green Bay is wasting back to back hall of fame QB careers . New England is now on their 6th super bowl with Brady . It is nice to have 3 super bowl appearances with Favre and rogers. However they will be kicking themselves badly if they don’t have any more when rogers is gone and the team stinks again like it did for 2 1/2 decades before that.

Why does it feel like Scolding a bunch of 8 yr old kids
from Vikes AND Packer fans out there?
Post something worthwhile, don’t just throw insults.
It was just a bad day, you’d have won 49 of 50 times if the game were replayed.
    NOW PLAY NICE!

    ======

If they replayed the game 50 times I don’t think they even win half of them. Unless you mean replaying the last 5 MINUTES of the game then you might be on to something!

  71. Vikings fans talking about the Packers as “chokers.”

    Now that’s rich.

Vikings: Four trips to the Super Bowl. Four fails. 0-4. Empty Trophy Case.

What you find when you look up “choker” in the dictionary: “See Vikings, Minnesota.”

  72. OK so for now McJoke is showing that he is gettin’ serious about making this change.
But the one and only place where he can really show that he is serious about making any changes is on the field when he next time gets a chance to show that he really, really means it by playing to win and not taking his foot off the gas and being OK with running up the score and having his golden boy throw instead of handing off to get first downs.
Just how serious is McJoke going to get?
We shall see but somehow I doubt it won’t be.
He will probably be the same old coach he always is and once again the Pack will blow another SB chance.

  73. The Packers blew it. The coaches were timid, the players untethered. They had a great chance in their hands and they blew it.

They gave every Packer-hating Viking troll a reason to live in the off-season. The Packers are getting blasted by them and their own.

At the end of the day, the Packers still OWN the Vikings.

What? I can’t hear you. I agree with all the choker talk and I agree with the player and coach bashing. And despite all that, the Packers still own the Vikings.

I still can’t hear you. What was your point?

    __________

The Packers are also the only 15-1 regular season record team in NFL history to not win a playoff game that year.

  75. If Packers fans haven’t yet deleted their DVR of the Choke Bowl, they’ll notice the sideline shot after Burnett intercepted the pass with about five minutes left and chose to lay down instead of running down the sideline for 20 or 30 yards, or maybe even a clinching touchdown.

In Fox’s Packers sideline shot, you see coaches congratulating players and each other, hugs all around. Game over, baby! Let’s coast!

    Yep. That’s on Shawn Slocum.

  76. I’m literally laughing at the people that are calling Slocum a scapegoat here. The fake FG and the botched onside kick are not like Fatman and Little Boy that ended WWII. The Packers special teams has been dropping bombs for years. The success that the Packers’ special teams has experienced was despite Slocum and not because of him.

If McCarthy can find an upgrade (which shouldn’t be too difficult), the Packers will drastically improve as an overall team.

  77. “Yeah, because it’s his fault they got rolled for 21 points in the last 7 minutes of the NFC Championship game.”
If you were a Packers fan then you wouldnt make such an ignorant statement because you would know the real reason he was fired, they were ranked dead last at 32 this season on special teams, they were not much better the last four years either.team head coaches get fired for being poor leaders all the time and get replaced,so do assistant coaches.this has nothing really to do with the Seattle game but a whole lot to do with the Packers special team performances over the last four or more years Slocum has been their ST coach.wonderful news for Packers fans everywhere, now at least there is new hope.

  78. Stop making it sound like Slocum got fired because of the one ‘Hawks game. The Packers special teams has been a joke of the NFL for years.

  79. Just think Hawk fans, if Dez catches that pass, you’d not be in the SB. The cowboys would have buried you that day (as we did before). You dodged a bullet, but as they say, sometimes it’s better to lucky then good.

  80. “Slocum is just another victim of the Seahawks.”
Really? why dont you look up Slocums special teams and see where they ranked since his hire, it certainly wasnt where they wanted to be,a second tier ST unit.the Packers ST under Slocum have been a unit that has hindered their otherwise excellent team for years and thats a pure fact.

  81. When you coach a special teams unit that allows 7 or 8 blocked kicks in one season you get fired.

When you call for a FG block up 16-0 late in the 3rd quarter and the opposing teams runs a fake for a TD, you get fired.

When you have a 3rd string TE in on the hands team who has decided before the play that he won’t perform his one and only job, you get fired.

When your KO return unit is perennially one of the worst in the NFL, you get fired.

When your punter falls from being one of the best in the league to one of the worst, you get fired.

  82. Coach McCarthy – coward move on you and the organizations part. Ever hear about Harry Truman’s desk plaque? It’s statement still applies today in leadership spots —- The Buck Stops Here.

  83. I think the Viking trolls would do well to understand the term “choke” That should only apply when a team is favored to win the game and ends up losing to a far inferior team, who know, sort of like the 4 Superbowls the Vikings lost where they were the favorites (and in some cases, overwhelming favorite) in each of the games.

Yes, the Packers lost a game they could have easily won but a took a series of gaffes to do so and the Seahawks were favored by 7.5 points going in. Some people cleaned up by wagering on the third best team in the NFL. (and with they 4th youngest roster, remember that going into next year)

  84. They fired the wrong coach. Every should have been on alert for the fake field goal, and everyone knew an onside kick was coming. If McCarthy had any ingenuity when it comes to play calling the game would have been out of reach with 4 minutes to go. He does this all the time, it this time it was an epic failure.

  85. One last comment on the fake FG. The Seahawks said that from studying game films that they saw on punts and FGs that Jones rushed the ball and left the out side undefended. They knew they were going to run a fake and whichever side Jones would line up on, that’s the direction the play would go. I would like to know why Slocum couldn’t see that when the Hawks able to catch it. As for blaming Mike for not going for it on 4th and 1, the Pack had just been stuffed for the last 3 plays, why would he trust that a 4th would be different?

  86. “Just think Hawk fans, if Dez catches that pass, you’d not be in the SB. The cowboys would have buried you that day (as we did before). You dodged a bullet, but as they say, sometimes it’s better to lucky then good.”
    _____________________________
You mean in your alternate universe, Rodgers doesn’t take the Packers down for the game winning field goal afterwards, like he did in clock killing mode anyway? And Detroit doesn’t get the win it had stolen from it the week prior?

  87. ariani1985 says: Jan 30, 2015 6:17 PM

Packers sure have this playoff losing down to a science!

Packers 31 wins, 20 losses in Playoff history, 4/1 in SuperBowls.
Vikings 19 wins, 27 losses in Playoff history, 0/4 in Superbowls.

Still want to talk about having losing in the playoffs down to a science?

  88. You hawk fans know you got lucky by not having to play the Cowboys. In my “alternate world” we kick the seahawks tail this year, oh wait that “Really Happened”. Do you really want to discuss what if’s… after the Green Bay game? You can admit you dodge one, but like I said it’s sometimes better to be lucky then good, and you were lucky that day.

  89. thefox61 says:

And Bostic is still getting paid! HA HA!

Actually, no. He collected his final paycheck of the year. And most likely the final one of his career, at least from Green Bay.
Slocum didn’t self-scout his field goal teams, and some of the smarter opponents took advantage. He richly deserved getting the boot.

  90. The only GB coach that should be fired is the head coach. He cost them the game when he did not go for it EITHER TIME INSIDE THE 5 YARD LINE IN THE FIRST QUARTER! That is why GB lost,no other reason!!!

  91. Bottom line: even if Bostic’s role was to block on the onside kick, there are plenty of other guys who can block AND who can catch a ball with proper fundamentals (rather than having his hands so far apart that the ball hit him in the face … just like a 3-year-old on their first attempt at catching a ball). The specials team’s coach should have been well aware that Bostic had terrible hands, which disqualifies him from being in the front row for an onside kick. You just can’t put your team at risk by putting a stiff out there. Can’t do it.
