PFT’s Super Bowl picks

AP

It’s finally here. And I still have no clear idea who will win. Even though a blowout could be brewing (especially if the Patriots can duplicate what the Packers did in the NFC title game before opting not to play to win but playing not to lose), I don’t have a really strong feeling.

But enough of that. This is the part where I write a few paragraphs to set up the picks.

And then I say the MDS and I were both accurate with our conference title picks, and that he’s 9-1 for the postseason, and I’m 7-3.

MDS’s take: Moving past #Deflategate and Marshawn Lynch sparring with reporters and all of the off-field issues of the last two weeks, I keep thinking it comes down to this: Seattle’s defense is just too good.

Last year the Seahawks’ defense made Peyton Manning look bad in the Super Bowl, and this year I think the Seahawks’ defense is going to make Tom Brady look bad in the Super Bowl. Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas are about as good as it gets in the NFL, and I don’t think Brady is going to find many open receivers on Sunday. If there’s one weakness to Seattle’s defense it’s that a good tight end can beat them, and as a result I can see Rob Gronkowski having a big day. But even if Gronk gets 100 yards and a touchdown, that won’t be enough on a day when I don’t expect any of the Patriots’ wide receivers to play well.

The reason this game will be a lot closer than last year’s Super Bowl is that I don’t see Seattle putting a lot of points on the board. Bill Belichick will have a good game plan to neutralize Russell Wilson’s running, and the Patriots’ secondary should be able to shut down Seattle’s wide receivers. This looks like a fairly low-scoring game.

But in the end, it’s a game that sees Seattle coming out on top. The Seahawks will repeat.

MDS’s pick: Seahawks 21, Patriots 17.

Florio’s take: Back in September, I picked the Seahawks and Patriots to make it to the Super Bowl. And I picked the Seahawks to win. And I can’t in good conscience abandon that selection.

I could be wrong. Very wrong. The Patriots may finish the job the Packers started. The Patriots may give Russell Wilson the Tim Tebow treatment, blowing the Seahawks out in the first half so that there’s no chance for a rabbit-from-hat finish. Or maybe it will be a close, down-to-the-wire, three-point margin with Stephen Gotskowski playing the role of Adam Vinatieri.

Coach Bill Belichick has the uncanny ability to develop a game plan that is unique to each opponent, figuring out how to move the ball against any defense he faces — and how to take away what any offense does best. Throw in the #DeflateGate disrespect, and Belichick may be able to press enough buttons to overcome the Seahawks.

But it’s the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, not Cincinnati in Week Five. Sometimes, no amount of Xs and Os and “us against them” and “win one for the Gipper” matters. G.M. John Schneider has put together an excellent roster, and Pete Carroll has coached them up to the point where they believe they can beat anyone.

This year, they didn’t beat everyone, but all that matters on Sunday is whether the can score more points than the Patriots. I believed they could in September, so I’ve got no choice but to stick with that now.

Florio’s pick: Seahawks 27, Patriots 24.

  1. I really dislike the Pats, but the fact that they at least pretend like they respect their opponents makes me want to cheer for them. The Seahawks demand respect, and give it to no one. I hope it’s rainy and cold in Seattle today for all you 12thers

  2. Thanks for the picks guys. I hope you’re both wrong, and I believe people are choosing to overlook that Seattle’s weakness is the short passing game, which is the Pats strength. But we’ll see how it unfolds. Let’s hope for a good game with zero controversies.

  3. Wow. You cannot be serious. Laughable.

    41-10 Pats.

Can’t wait to see the postgame pressers of the Seahawks and look at Youtube videos of Seattle fans leaving the building. LOL

This is the GREATEST team and EVERYONE is jealous of that. You are all forced to watch us! HAHAHA

  4. Sea chickens will loose. They are not the team they were last year, despite what other people (with an odd affinity for the number twelve) would have you believe. Russel Wilson is above average, but his “clutch” factor isn’t there yet; it sputters to life randomly, and is never consistent.

The seattle defense got destroyed by lacy last week, and this week features a back with the same build and same style; I’m betting against their ability to overcome that weakness. Eventually the boomers will creep into the box, as they will have to, and LaFell will have a big one, maybe several big ones. Lets also not forget their TE coverage woes; Gronk is just the man to push that button. NE wins, by an inch.

  5. The most satisfying moment will be, of course, at the end when the cameras are on the Cheathawks’ sidelines, showing all the crushed dreams of a pretender franchise. Wow, this will be fun.

  6. I want you guys picking Seattle to explain exactly how the ‘Hawks can score anything more than one TD and a handful of meaningless FGs.

Their offense sucks. The GB win was a fluke.

  7. this is highly unscientific, but if you run the offensive/defensive point averages for the season, you roughly come out with Pats 24, Hawks 21 ..that’s what I’m going with, final answer

  8. Anyone that has watched the “Marshawn and Gronk play Mortal Kombat X” video knows we’ve all already won.

  9. Pete “The Cheat” Carroll and the Seadderall Cheathawks don’t have their precious artificial crowd noise for this game. What now?

  10. If Pats can somewhat control Marshawn and keep Russell in the pocket Pats win going away. Seattle gets a lot of pressure with 4 rushers..long day for Brady and Pats..Seattle not a high scoring team and if they play 3 quarters like they did against GB Pats win BIG. This is a pick em for sure..Pats 24 – Seahawks 16

Artificial eh? Wait until you hear how loud it is in there Sunday. I guarantee this post i just made will appear in your thoughts.

  13. I just see the Patriots winning the Superbowl and the whole offseason people talk about how they cheated their way through it and this Superbowl will always have an * next to it.

    It will be annoying.

  14. The Patriots will take a page from the Packers playbook, except the page that said quit playing with 5 minutes left. Patriots are going to blow the Seahawks out. B & B keep their foot on the gas and don’t feel bad blowing a team out.

31 – 10 New England. Won’t even look that close though.

  15. The Packers and the Patriots are the two best teams in the league. The Packers exposed the overrated Seahawks. The Patriots will win because they will play to win, and not wimp out like McCarthy did. Three TD’s. They will win by three TD’s.

  16. Gotta take the Pats. Too much short and intermediate offense coupled with a run game that can pound seattle’s smaller finesse front. On defense, Seattle won’t be able to throw outside, Pats shut down Lynch when he was in Buffalo and they can stack the box. Pats 28, Seahawks 14.

Now, I am a Patriots fan sick of the DeflateGate talk. But if all the jokes people were making were as clever as this one, I would be much less annoyed.

  18. Now I know how the Viking fans felt when Favre wasted a SuperBowl appearance by snatching defeat from the hands of victory.

Both games were similar, except the Viking loss was like getting a tooth instantly knocked out, and the Packer loss was like getting a tooth pulled out for twenty minutes.

  19. 1. Seattle’s offense is ninth, NE is 11th;
    2. Seattle’s defense is #1;
    3. Seahawks will not have 5 turnovers – No rain and wind in Glendale on Sunday.

I do think the Patriots will do better than a garbage time TD like the Broncos.

    Seattle 27, NE 14

  20. I hope you guys are right, and that the Seahawks win the game.

I am so disgusted by all the ways (just the ones that we know of so far) that the Patriots bend and break rules to gain competitive advantage. I can’t believe that the NFL is hiding its head in the sand and allowing the Patriots to play yet another asterisked Super Bowl. Why does Bill do it? His owner supports it, his team wins, his fans revel in the fact that he is such a cheater. They cheer him on. And when they get caught? He’s quite effective at the ‘us against the world motivation speech.’ Just look what happened earlier this season when, after some early losses and really ugly wins, people started to ask whether Brady and the Pats dynasty were done. The win streak that followed the public questioning is why Bill cheats – if they don’t get caught, they gain competitive advantage that they don’t need, and if they get caught? The team responds extremely well to adversity. Robert and Bill would probably grow some ethics if the NFL would start vacating wins on the Patriots for not following the rules, or, like in the college ranks, punishment by not allowing the cheating team to play in the post season.

I won’t be watching this Super Bowl. And after having NFL Sunday ticket continuously since Sept 1996, the NFL altogether is probably next. Too many lying weasels, drug addicts, alcoholics, significant-other beaters, rapists, and murderers in the league.

  21. I used to think the Seahawks had the most arrogant fanbase in the NFL, but this past week and change made me realize the Patriots are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of arrogance.

Every Seahawk fan predicting a win is saying a close game. Every Pats fan is predicting a blow out. Every Seahawks fan is not mentioning DeflateGate. Every Pats fan is calling the Seahawks cheaters and pretenders. And every Pats fan is topping that by suggesting the media picks will influence the score (because that ALWAYS happens…)

I am picking the Seahawks with both my head and heart. I can’t imagine another Lombardi in NE with an asterisk.

  22. Last year Vegas favored Manning and mostly east coast idiots like Patsie fans bet the house on the Donkeys. Vegas made record profit, Google it, and Seattle destroyed the so called greatest offense of all time. Record TD passes, Yards, Points, etc. those chosen scored 8 points late in a garbage time drive. Sorry east coasters, but Vegas is setting the same stage favoring the Patsies, I win, you lose! Idiots!
    34-16 Hawks.
Seattle scores from all over the field and all you losers have is trick plays and a stud TE. Do you really think your offense is better than last years Donkeys? Not even close!
    Go Hawks!

  23. The Pats never play not to lose. You can count on them to keep the foot on the gas for the full 60 minutes.

    ________

Actually, if you were a fan since 2007, you already knew how that felt. Did you forget Favre’s OT interception against the Giants when two other receivers were wide open?

  29. Yea Seattle beat Denver pretty bad last year but didn’t Percy Harvin have like 21 points in that game? He’s not there and the Hawks defense might be a little weakened by the injuries to Sherman and Thomas but the pats have to run the ball to win, Brady can’t have 45 attempts but go pats! 28-24

  30. It kills me to say the Seahawks are the better team but they are. I would have no qualms about laying ten dimes on them to win outright let alone getting points?

I see it being relatively close until late 3rd quarter when Wilson scrambles and makes a back breaking play for a TD, then Money Lynch takes over and grinds the bearded Caucasians into dust.

    Boom

  31. Brady could tie the record for most Super Bowl wins by a QB, or the Pats could set the record for the most Super Bowl losses by a franchise. Bit of a razor’s edge situation here. I’ll bet the Pats wish they had gotten Green Bay instead of this ferocious defense.

  32. New England 24, Seattle 20. Just have a feeling that the short passing game is going to kill Seattle and the injuries to Thomas and Sherman are a bit more than they are leading on.

  33. This Sunday is going to feature something never seen before: a healthy Gronk playing in a Super Bowl. It will be the X factor that cannot be stopped. Plus, the Seahawks have no business even being here after gifting 4 picks on one of the worst secondaries in the league. Pats 38-17.

  34. NEs defense is being greatly underrated here. It has allowed only one team a TD in the second half in like 10 games.

Seattle’s run defense is a bit soft. They struggle against short, shifty receivers. And Gronk is Gronk.

    I expect a good game in the 20s. I’ll call NE 28 Seattle 24

Wait, so why aren’t the Packers playing then?

So here’s a question, does everyone feel that the Pat’s offense this year is _better_ than the Broncos were last year? Be that on paper, or gut feeling, whatever you fancy.

Because on paper AND in analysts/fans gut, the Hawk D is *BETTER* than it was last year.

This game will be decided by how the the Hawk O and Pats D plays out.

  36. Excerpt from article: “Coach Bill Belichick has the uncanny ability to develop a game plan that is unique to each opponent, figuring out how to move the ball against any defense he faces — and how to take away what any offense does best.”***

***Except for big games against the Giants.

  37. I love how everyone picking the Patriots says the Packers gave a blueprint for beating the Seahawks (when the Hawks still won) but no one mentions the Ravens giving a “blueprint” for beating up an overrated Patriots’ defense (when the Pats still won). The Ravens marched up and down the field most of that game and had Flacco not gotten greedy and thrown an ill-advised pick, the Pats wouldn’t even be here this week.

  38. Wait – what happened to the Packers v Patriots!? I was assured by the Packer faithful that it was a LOCK! Heck, even the players started celebrating during the seahawks game by sliding after INTs and not doing their jobs.

Seattle hasn’t lost by double digits ONCE with Carroll and Wilson. Not once. Also, did you forget what Buffalo just did a while back to NE? 9 Points? FYI, Seattle’s defense is better than Buffalo’s. DO i think Seattle will hold them to 9 points? No, but if they score more than 21, i will be pretty surprised.

  42. After a 20 minute delay in the 2nd quarter to find an inflation needle, both teams go into halftime tied at 10 apiece. 3rd quarter starts after another 20 minute delay to find Katy Perry’s Madonna style rocket boob cups. After a scoreless 3rd… Pete Caroll is ejected after hitting a ref in the eye with a challenge flag over Belichick’s use of calling 9 of the 11 players as eligible on a trick play where Bam Bam Kam intercepted a pick six that was called back. With 5 minutes left in the 4th, Russell Wilson hits Marshawn Lynch on a bubble screen down the sideline and Bill Belichick pulls a Woody Hayes and tackles Marshawn at the New England 10 yard line and 25 ball inflation needles fly out of Bill’s pockets. After BB is also ejected…Robert Turbin scores on a 4th and goal to give the Seahawks a 17 to 10 lead with 30 seconds left in the game. The Seahawks stun everyone with an onsides kick to secure the win. Jerry Jones wins the MVP just because he can as Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft leg wrestle at midfield… Hey….It could happen. I can parlay my 50 cent Prop bet into $2.8 Million dollars if this plays out…

Not even close to the same Seahawks team that won the SB last season and it showed against the Packers. I see the Patriots winning this by a TD.
    —————-
You’re right, not the same. They had more offensive yards this year than last year. They averaged more points per game this year over last year. They Allowed less yards this year compared to last year, and allowed less points per game this year than last year. Yep, not the same team, they are better.

  44. halftime:
    Pats 24

    Final:

Brady knows how to put up yards on this defense. Wilson will not be able to make big plays out of broken plays with the Pats secondary.

  45. “Coach Bill Belichick has the uncanny ability to develop a game plan that is unique to each opponent, figuring out how to move the ball against any defense he faces — and how to take away what any offense does best.”

Coach Bill Belichick has the uncanny ability to develop a game plan that is full of illegal plays, formations, and substitutions. Figuring out how to move the ball against any defense he faces since that defence plays within the rule book and is therefore handicapped.

    There, fixed that for you.

  46. Pete the cheat, Seadderall, Shehawks, really people, no new material? You guys sound like that guy in the bar telling the same old tired joke. Seattle has no offense? #9 on the season New England, #10. Fake crowd noise? You’ll see. I seem to recall all these same kinds of post last year for Denver. Denver rolls, Seattle gets crushed, Denvers offense can’t be stopped. How’d that turn out. Lastly, Seattle played their worst game in the NFCC, guess what, they still one.
    Hoping for a good game.
    Go Hawks!!!
    Seattle-23
    NE-17

  47. I really hate to say it, but I think it’s going to be Seattle.

I think the teams match up evenly, but this game, the Refs are going to be Seattle’s 12th man.

They’re already changing the way the Refs designate ineligible receivers for the Superbowl. In my decades of watching the NFL, I’ve never heard of rules being changed right before the Superbowl specifically to aid one team in countering the offensive strategy of the other team. I’m pretty sure it’s unprecedented.

If the NFL is willing to do this, what else are they going to quietly instruct the Refs to do?

The phrase “The fix is in” is grossly overused on the PFT boards, but all evidence points to it being true this time.

  48. “or the Pats could set the record for the most Super Bowl losses by a franchise”

The Broncos, Vikings, and Bills have all lost 4 Super Bowls. The Bills, as we know, lost 4 in a row, but the Vikings and Broncos also both lost 2 in a row.

The Pats fans are unbelievable. The arrogance, the denial, the personal attacks you see in their posts are unbelievable. Even threats against the reporter that did his job by breaking the DeflateGate story. Real class.

And now Robert Kraft is demanding an apology from the league? Beyond belief. Belichick needs to be permanently banned from the league, Kraft needs to be forced to sell his team, sadly, at a huge profit, and the Pats need to be banned from the post season for a couple of years. And a zero tolerance policy needs to be adopted going forward, ANY team found bending and breaking rules needs to be hammered until no team is tempted to adopt Bill’s cheating ways.

  50. Can’t stand Brady, can’t stand Belichick. But, you must respect their ability and the way they’ve been ripped all week has just been fueling their fire.

New England will win, and they will win big. This will be their first game under this regime decided by more than a touchdown.

    New England 31
    Seattle 14

  51. Either way ceefu i was wrong but the difference was Harvin because he drew so much deception attention and they have been trying to fill his roll with lockette and ever since he left Seattle hasn’t been the same… they are not the powerhouse they was last year and thats because of Harvin

  52. I think the Patriots will win. Seahawks are a very good team but I think the Pats will take away Lynch and force Wilson to improvise. He is outstanding at that but I believe the Pats defense is disciplined enough to force him to come up short. The Pats center will be crucial but I haven’t seen whether he will play or not. If the Hawks get pressure up the middle Brady has issues.

Yes, the GB game was probably the only game you watched the Seahawks play in. To get a 12-4 record in the regular season 6 of those wins in a row to finish out the season, means they are a fairly good team.
It just means you need to pay a little closer attention. It’ll be a great game with the Hawks coming out on top!

    Go Hawks!

  54. “Patriots win this one. Packers showed how you beat this team… they just couldn’t finish. ” …or…

” Seahawks win this one. Ravens showed how you beat this team…they just couldn’t finish. “

  55. Bottom line, the worst bet in the world is betting on NFL games. As a Hawks fan I have no idea what to expect. Last year I was nervous before the game just like I am now. Any result could happen and I wouldn’t be shocked either way. Not a person in the world would have predicted the Title game to go the way it did so GO HAWKS!!

  56. Close games are always the dream because they are entertaining but Super Bowls are rarely close. Last year the real Super Bowl was Seahawks-49ers. It was close and SF would have also beaten Denver. This year Green Bay would have beaten New England on Sunday as well.

MDS said “a good tight end could beat (the Seahawks)” but failed to provide any evidence because there isn’t any. In the last 5 Seahawks playoff games, TE production has been either non-existent or minimal.

Wilson is undefeated against quarterbacks who have previously won the Super Bowl. Seahawks have done extremely well in nationally televised games under Pete Carroll. Brady has been sick all week and they have failed miserably this year on the road against top defenses.

This will be a road game for NE against the best defense in the NFL.

    Seattle 35-16

  57. Honestly, I don’t care which team wins just hoping for a good game to watch. The one thing I have noticed about Seahawk fans is their annoying arrogance with all the “Dynasty” in the making talk is getting as bad as what I hear from Steeler fans all the time. Geez, just play the game and if you lose don’t be a crybaby John Harbaugh type of whiner about it!

Can’t argue with you there, sadly. But, you know who is also not the best team? And has never been the best team in their 54 years of existence? That’s right, your Minnesota Vikings.

  59. “Uncanny ability???” I’m tired of all of the announcers and writers saying that BB will take this away or that away, like it is just a matter of scheming and his will. What BB does is what every good coach in the game at any level does. He scouts his opponent, looks at what personnel package works best against it, and game plans with his staff on how to give themselves the best chance to win.

That isn’t uncanny. It isn’t uncommon. It is what good coaches have done since the dawn of the game. Lets quit giving BB mystical status here, please. That all being said, he is a very good, hard working coach, and no disrespect is intended here towards him.

The true measurement of how good a coaching staff is, is looking at the adjustments made at half, after each team has shown its hand in the first half. Both teams excel here.

  60. Defense win championships!

New England will not be able to run the ball. Seattle can stop the run just about as good as the Ravens (14 of the toughest yards they ever had to gain on the ground) …..and the Seahawks have a Secondary!!!!

    Seahawks 17
    Patriots 3

  61. Patriots win in OT on a Belichick eligible play because he secretly added himself to the roster, wore a uniform under his hoodie, stepped on the field before the refs could catch it and caught a perfectly thrown drone controlled Nerf football from Gronk on a Wildcat formation. Sometime in the Spring the NFL issues a statement saying the play was illegal but there’s nothing they can do about it now. A month after that, the NFL issues another statement saying they concluded their DeflateGate investigation and the Patriots shouldn’t have even been in the Super Bowl. Once again they say sorry but it’s too late. At hearing the news, BeastMode calls for a press conference so he can get something of his chest.

  62. I’m just going to call it like I see it. There will actually be no true winner from this game. If the Pats win it will be because of “cheating”, if the Hawks win it will be because of “cheating” because they are probably still on PED’s or that they “didn’t deserve to be there because Green Bay choked”. Either way the fans of the losing team will have one of those lame excuses.

Pats are 3-4 in SB games to date. They’ll take over the lead for losses going 3-5 after the Hawks spank them.

  64. People seem to be over-emphasizing the Packers game. That was Wilson’s worst game. In his career. The Patriot’s D isn’t the best the Seahawks have played this year. The Seahawks D IS the best the Pats have faced. Bulletin board material doesn’t win games. Players do. SEA 28 NE 20

  65. I see Seattle’s D putting the same kind of performance against the Patriots as they did against the Packers, and limiting drives to several FGs and at least one INT. Like several elite passers before him, Brady will avoid Sherman for much of the game.

27-23 Seahawks, in a come-from-behind win late in the 4th. Because, c’mon…they always rack up nearly all of their points in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

  66. FACT: The Seahawks didn’t beat a single team since September that had a winning record and did not have their starting QB out, until they beat the Packers on a botched onside kick recovery.

    Pats 27-17

  67. Edelman, LaFell and Gronk will all have big days. Pats go up early, Hawks get frustrated and fall apart like the Lions did against the Pats earlier this year.

  68. Spoiler alert:

Lynch crashes the end zone to erase 4 point deficit with no time on the clock.

However, he grabs his crotch and the points are off the board and the hawks fail to score from the 16.

    NE 24-20.

  69. Seahawks win this game easily. Without a deflated football Blount will fumble more and Edleman and Gronk will have a tougher time catching the ball. I am now convinced that Brady asked the ball guy to deflate the balls for his personnel, not him.

    Seahawks 35
    Patriots 10

    Write it down.

  70. The seattle defense got destroyed by lacy last week, and this week features a back with the same build and same style;

    ===========================================

Destroyed equals 73 yards and zero TDs on 21 carries? OK there chief.

  71. Pasties are a cheating dynasty. Everytime they manage to cheat another deserving team out of victory, they also gain another enemy. Most of their SB victories come from cheating.

I hope everybody in Glendale, Arizona, turns their backs to the NE Cheaters, during team introductions. Send them a message, the can only try to ignore.

I hope for another SB blowout victory for the Hawks, or whoever is playing the NE Cheaters.

  72. I Strongly Dis-like Both Teams, so I am as Neutral as anyone.

    MY thoughts:

    Seattle: 28
    New England 17

It will be close until the 4th Quarter, but the Seahawks will get a late turnover, and then grind it with Lynch for a late TD.

  73. Patriots blow out Hawks.
    Peyton no Brady.
Peyton always seems to be like a different QB in the playoffs. Still trying to figure out why he was trying to throw long versus the short unders which made them so successful.

  74. By the way, the NY Times ran a study today proving the Patriots were right about weather effects on footballs.

  75. Coaching will only get you so far…

  77. Pats have had 2 running TDs against them in 9 Weeks. Lynch is awwesome. likely good for one… Wilson will throw for a TD and they’ll add on a couple FG… Brady will throw for two and they’ll rush for two… add a FG… 31-20 Pats.

  78. Seahawks 31, Pats 24

Score makes game look close due to a late NE TD (& failed onside kick), but statistically the Seahawks dominate.

Russell Wilson is MVP after 289 yards passing & (a SB QB rushing record) 112 on the ground. Some will say that Marshawn Lynch’s 129 yards rushing & 63 yards receiving were more deserving of the award. The “Russell Wilson is nothing more than a Game Manager” crowd buys into the theory that the voters were paid off by Disney.

Now that is ‘the pot calling the kettle black.’ Funniest comment sources out of denial I’ve seen. The Pats bend and break so many rules they show contempt for the NFL and football. The show contempt for all who love the game. Patriots fans love the cheating and controversies.

    ————————————-

This right here invalidates anything you have to say, as you clearly (and understandably) didn’t watch a single Seahawks game outside of the NFCCG.

Here are a two facts regarding the offense this year:

    – They avg more points per game
    – The avg more yards per game

And for the defense this year:

    – They avg less points per game
    – They avg less yards per game

Oh, and after Harvin was traded, what did the Hawks do? Oh just go 9-1.

  81. Why is it that all the Patriots’ fans somehow feel that they have been unfairly targeted by the NFL and the media?

Your team cheated! Over and over and over again!

Only the Patriots could make me a Seahawks fan.

FACT: The Seahawks pass rush is not as good as KC’s. KC had 46 sacks. New England had 40. Seattle had 37. To beat the Patriots, you need a strong pass rush up the middle and that is what really differentiates Seattle from KC, Baltimore (49 sacks), and the Jets(45 sacks). I really don’t see how you can replace the Chiefs with Seattle. Also, the Patriots now have a healthy Gronk, which they didn’t in that game and the offensive line has gotten better since then. You simply can’t look to the KC game and say THAT’s why Seattle will beat the Patriots. That’s not reality. The Patriots strengths play well against Seattle and that’s the short passing game.

  83. All depends on the start of the second half and how Seattle reacts to Bellichick’s second-half game plan, which I believe will be a surprising difference from what he did in the first half.

Seattle has been very successful in second half adjustments; therefore, Bellichick, a great strategist, will throw them a curveball or two.

How the Seahawks handle that will be determinative to the game

  84. Here’s to seeing the Pats WRs have a high amount of drops where the ball bounces off their hands and their RBs fumble an awful lot.

But no, they’re definitely not cheaters…..

I guess if both teams play like they did in September the Seahawks will be awesome. :).

  86. New England is soft, finesse AFC trash with the most overrated defense in the league. This is literally going to be a Re-Pete of last year. Seattle wins in a slaughter. You goombas blathering about the Patriots going for the killshot unlike the Packers fail to realize that the Seahawks are not going to gift you 5 fluke turnovers again.

Wow. At least pretend like you watched the game rather than spewing blind hate. Lacey’s 21 carries for 73 yards (3.5 per carry) and zero touchdowns doesn’t spell out the words “Destroyed by Lacy”.

I would ask if you realize this, but you have made it clear you just say things that don’t make any sense. The Seahawks have averaged 90 more yards per game since getting rid of harvin. Also, they have only lost 1 game since trading him, and had lost 3 with him prior to trading him.

  89. If I read or hear one more reference about Russell Wilson and the GB game, as if that was not a total anomaly. Wilson had a rough day, made rougher still by 2 well thrown balls that bounced off receiver Kerse.

The real gem was posted by the poster who suggested Lacy had a field day with the Seahawks defense…so 75 yards is your idea of a “field day?” Hmmm…might that explain why your team isn’t here?

Still, none of the Pat’s fans understand how Russell has a knack for playing his best in the 4th quarter, when everything is on the line. Russell is a great competitor! As suggested by never have lost to a SB winning QB.

This actually feels like deja vu…being the underdog once again….and not given any respect, or chance to win this game.

We all we got, we all we need!!

    Pats by 2

  91. I think it’ll be 20-21 Pats going into the 4th. Seattle will try just a little too hard, throw a late INT. 28-20 Pats. Seattle will get another FG for some possible late game heroics but won’t onside kick because they think they have enough time. But then Pats will drive for another FG and the final score will be 31-23 Pats.

  93. SEA/DEN 2.0 Wilson & his team is 10-0 vs. Super Bowl winning QBs. After this one they’ll be 11-0. Expect a couple of Brady’s short, hot passes to bounce into the air for picks and Russell will place his stamp on the league again.

Instead of finding reasons why his supporting cast helped him win, he shows why he is an elite QB, again. He should have won MVP in his pro bowl appearance, arguably was the MVP of the Super Bowl (imagine another winning QB not winning it) and he will vastly outplay Brady to claim his respect.

BOLD PREDICTION: Baldwin dominates Revis. 1st play double move for 6.

Depends what you mean. Short passes in the middle seem to have some success with few YAC.
Screen passes usually get swallowed up. Rarely do the Pats complete deep passes so you better hope you’re right.

  95. All due respect to Seattle’s defense, which is extremely good, but they allowed about a field goal less per game than the Pats, so it’s not like the Pats are allowing 50 and the Seahawks are allowing 5 points/game. 108. Last 20 times Seattle an underdog, lost against the spread only THREE TIMES.

Seattle in December or later: 19-5-1 ATS (last four seasons)

Seattle: 20-7-1 ATS vs. teams with a winning record

Seattle vs Non-Div foes: 30-14-1 ATS

Patriots have not won a postseason game away from home since 2006.

Teams scoring 40 plus points in the playoffs are on 4-23 ATS losing run the following game (Super Bowl included).

Super Bowl underdog 6-1 ATS the past seven Super Sundays. Seattle underdog again just like last years tussle versus Broncos/Manning.

Patriots 4-11 against the spread in last 15 postseason games.

Public going all Pats based on a beatdown over an overmayched one man team in Indy at Foxborough. I put no stock in that as the AFC is weak sauce yet again.

Seattle easy west coast travel to a familiar inter division stadium/city. Seattle’s 12th Man fanbase was very prominent and loud at MetLife stadium this time last year (just ask Manning) so I think they will be even more vocally present for this west coast Super Bowl.

Vegas going Seattle and so am I…Hawks 27 Pats 13. Lynch named Super Bowl MVP.

  109. While I hope Seattle wins, I’m also hoping the final score ends with a 7 and 0 for either team. I’ll pick up a cool grand on the pool.

On a more serious note, a good majority of people picked Denver last year because of their record setting offense. I read somewhere that the team with the #1 D is 13-3 in the SB. Also winning the last eight of nine Super Bowls those D’s have played. Just food for thought.

  110. Didn’t somebody need blocked field goals to beat powerhouse Jets twice? Who had to rely on trickery to beat Ravens? Seahawk crowd won’t hurt either. I’m wondering how those little finesse receivers just survive the game. Hawks 30-9.

Thanks for all the sack stats but you don’t have to sack Brady to throw him off. Just hit him.

  114. As a Seahawks fan I hope they win. The Pats are a great team and they have a really smart coach in Belichek.

Seahawks were the number 1 defense in points allowed. The Patriots were the number one offense in points scored. We know historically how that has played out.

Brady doesn’t have “great” receivers either, except for Gronk. When Gronk got healthy Brady had more options. The Pats started winning.

The Hawks don’t usually get blown out. Even in games they play badly in, they can keep the score close. Wilson has an uncanny ability to find a way to win big games. He is what(?)
9-0 against Superbowl winning QBs? And yes, part of that is a defense that is terrific. But he is a good leader who does not give up.

The worst point differential in a loss they have had in the last 3-years is 9 against San Diego this year.

The Seahawks have matured as a defense. They have a great secondary. They can rush the passer effectively. And their linebackers are coming into their own.

They are also young. This is what makes them such a strong second half team. As the other team is slowing down Seattle is maintaining their pace. It just seems like it picks up. Lynch bangs the heck out of the defense for 3 quarters and then starts running over them in the 4th.

They are not unbeatable by any means as has been shown by several teams. But they always find a way to make it a close game.

    Go Hawks!

  115. I will predict some fumbles for the Patriots RBs. They didn’t fumble at all in the regular season, probably because the ball was deflated significantly below requirements, making the football easier to hold onto. There was only one rushing fumble by the Patriots the whole regular season, and that was one by Tom Brady.

That also explains why Ben Jarvus Green Ellis suddenly started to fumble after he left New England and went to Cincinnati.

  116. The Pats will lose because the NFL is keeping a sharper eye on the footballs and they won’t get a chance to deflate them.

  117. The Packers showed you how to beat them?

In what way? The various tipped passes that fell into the defenses hands?

The various ways the Packers settled for field goals instead of touchdowns with multiple attempts in the red zone?

    Really people? REALLY?

  118. Seahawks showed up for five minutes at the end of the game and still won. Seahawks have a good defense and the Patriots have a very underrated defense. Last year the Broncos blew out the Patriots in the AFC Championship game and the Seahawks barely got by the 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Without the Sherman pick with a minute left, the 49ers very well could have won that game. I feel like we’re in the same position this year. I think it’ll come down to a few big plays by Jevon Kearse and/or Doug Baldwin late in the game.

    19-16 Seattle Seahawks

    It’ll be a good Superbowl.

    Ok.

He’ll beat with his arm. He’ll beat you with his legs. He’ll beat you with his mind.

And he’ll beat you with his heart.

    27-16 Seahawks.

  121. Seahawks have been unbelievably great on defense, but they haven’t faced a great team for many many weeks until Green Bay, who really should have beaten them. After losing to KC, the Seahawks played Arizona’s bum QB twice and no other playoff teams. They won all the games, but those teams couldn’t punch back. Thomas may have trouble tackling hard. Sherman will be fine, but Brady will never throw over there.

I don’t think it will be that close… the Patriots are the better team. Patriots 27-10.

  122. If the Patriots win the NFL is doomed and they know it. Seattle will get all the help they need to repeat. Bank on it.

  123. Maybe the Pats don’t fumble as much because Belichick is the only coach that almost immediately benches players for fumbling and the Pats coaches emphasize ball protection more than any other team in the league.

I guess that means you cannot deny the Packers are one of the top four teams in the league…..unquestionably, right? After all, they finished in the top four! By your standards it fits the criteria.

    ————-

If Seattle gets pressure up the middle then everyone knows that the Patriots and Brady don’t respond very well to that. Of course, that’s why Brady worked on his mobilty to some extent.

I think that’s an easy thing to say, but harder to do. The Patriots will defend that well. That’s not really how the Seahawks beat teams. It’s their secondary coverage that creates the pass rush. Brady needs to find the open man, and I think he has a enough weapons (Gronk, Edelman, LaFell, Amendola, Vereen) to do that.

As for the read-option, most experts say the Patriots have the horses to prevent Wilson from running it clean to the outside so there will be more hand offs to Lynch. Can the Patriots stop Lynch, that is what it comes down to. I think they can, at least long enough to take control of the game.

  128. Patriots 27 Seahawks 20. Pats will attack with the ground game, short range passing with Edelman, Wright, and Amendola and force Wilson to turn over the ball. Lynch will be contained but they still keep it close thanks to Wilson. Seahawks are a good team but I think the Patriots are better.

  129. He doesn’t have to say it, I will. The Packers are one of the top 4 teams in NFL this year.

    1. Seahawks
    2. Patriots
    3. Packers
    4. Cowboys

Take it however you want to.

  130. Delusion at work on both sides:

    “Patriots are gonna get destroyed.”

“41-10 Pats. This is the GREATEST team and EVERYONE is jealous of that.”

  131. like most games, the line of scrimmage will dictate the game.

I don’t see the seahawks scoring a lot. The patriots will need to push around a light d-line and run the ball. If they can do that they can attack through their play actions pass game. I don’t see Brady attacking them like Manning did last year with pass after pass from the start of the game. If Brady does he will have a similar result.

Turns out it’s the Seahawks and the Patriots that are the two best teams in the league.
    ///////////////////////////////////////////

Do you honestly feel the two best teams in the NFL are always the two that end up in the SuperBowl? Most advantageous, absolutely. Hottest at the moment, yes. The best in the NFL by virtue of being there? I don’t think so.

I guess that means you cannot deny the Packers are one of the top four teams in the league…..unquestionably, right? After all, they finished in the top four! By your standards it fits the criteria.

Let me hear you say it and I may change my tune. Let me see you post…. “The Packers are one of the top four teams in the NFL.”

Not “finished in the top four”…..but they ARE in the top four.

    That’s what I thought.
    ______

No, I would never say that the two teams in the Super Bowl are automatically the two best in the NFL. As you very astutely pointed out, a team in the Super Bowl could just be very lucky or got hot at the right time. The 2010 Packers are a great example of this. A mediocre team through most of the season that got hot at the right time, but no way anyone could say they were the best team in the NFL. Great point, and thanks for focusing our attention on that.

As for this year’s Packers, I’m not sure where I would rank them. Could be top 4, but I think Dallas was better and got robbed in the playoff game. Sam Shields agrees with me.

I just don’t think it’s difficult to argue that Seattle has a better team than Green Bay. Seattle won both games played between the teams this year. Seattle is the defending champion. Seattle gave the Packers five turnovers and the Packers still couldn’t beat them. Seattle led the league in defense for the third straight year, far ahead of the Packers, but weren’t far behind the Packers in offense. I’m just not sure how someone could argue that Green Bay is better than Seattle.

But hey, if you’re going to use your logic, then I’d like to declare that the Minnesota Vikings were the best team in the NFL in 2009 and 1998.

  133. to all the haters that says Seattle pipes in their crowd noise, remember last year in New York? I’m pretty sure the nfl didn’t allow the seahawks to pipe in any noise. plus this year is going to be even louder.

  134. Carl, you just don’t understand that, while I am perfectly willing to admit that the Packers were one of the best teams in the NFL (not top two, though), all Packer fans seem to be completely incapable of acknowledging that the Vikings are not the worst team in the NFL. Why don’t you be a stand-up guy and admit that the Vikings have a future star at QB and are on the way up?

“With this win, a huge middle finger to Roger Goodell, the NFL, ESPN, and all the Patriots’ haters.”

Funny, that’s the same gesture Bill’s been making every time he cheats and every time he’s such a butthole with the press.

Just make one change to Ghost Rat’s comment: delete ‘Patriots’ haters,’ substitute in ‘all NFL fans.’

  136. Is it wrong to laugh hysterically if Brady fumbles the ball multiple times? It has got to happen, in a year where if anything can go wrong it will go wrong in the NFL, it is just bound to bring up the deflate gate thing again.

By the way, the NY Times ran a study today proving the Patriots were right about weather effects on footballs.
    ——————————————————————–

NY Times? Pathetic. I ran a study this morning too… when I drove home from work it was 51 degrees yesterday and my tires had 33 psi. When I woke up this morning it was about 10 and the psi was 32. So, yeah. The weather doesn’t impact the balls enough to drop 2 psi. The Patriots are cheaters no way around it.

Head Smart Labs (google it) did a test in their lab and found that the air temperature would have had a 1 psi affect on the football. So your tire test has merit. But when they added moisture to the ball it added another psi drop of .9 psi. So your tire theory needs to be re-thought.

  138. Hawks are too fast – you’ll find this out.

Hawks are built differently than any other team.

Most teams have offensive speed and defensive pounders.

Hawks are so tough because they have defensive speed and offensive pounders.

Hawks beat GB by 21 if they don’t turn it over 5 times. They averaged 5.5 YPC.

Unless the OC again brain cramps, they’ll simply run it down NE’s throat, forcing NE into pass mode which will end badly.

BTW – when the Hawks got beat by TE, Chancellor was fighting bone spurs, Wagner was out, KJ was hurt. Gronk will get his but it’s not going to be 100 and a TD.

  139. “But hey, if you’re going to use your logic, then I’d like to declare that the Minnesota Vikings were the best team in the NFL in 2009 and 1998.”

Hey, (snaps fingers,) please pay attention. This was YOUR logic, not mine.

  140. Ok football gurus , let’s make this real simple . I am not going to predict a final score just the reality of this game . If Brady is allowed to stay upright in the pocket and not get hurried the Pats should win , its that simple . If the Hawks can do what the Giants did in their two Super Bowl wins , then the Hawks will win . I am picking the Pats in a tight game , both teams have excellent defenses .
I like what Joe Montana said about the footballs . The quarterback should be able to have the football at what ever pressure is best for him . Get ride of that stupid rule .

    GO PATS

  141. I said this was the AFC’s year to win the Super Bowl. The AFC representative will win the Super Bowl.

    Patriots 24 Seahawks 21
    AFC begins it’s dominance again.

  142. Notice how the Pats trolls’ response is always that the rules the Patriots break in their cheating should just be eliminated?

JUST FOLLOW THE RULES. IT’S EASY.

BRADY’S GREAT? LET HIM WIN WITHOUT CHEATING! I BELIEVE HE COULD. WHY CHEAT?

BELICHICK IS A GENUIS COACH? TRY WINNING WITHOUT CHEATING!!

  143. Seattle fans seems to be thinking they are getting the Broncos 2.0. The Broncos are a soft team as who folded up because they faced a very physical football team. The Patriots are not soft and will not be intimidated like the Broncos.

  144. Some really impressive nonsense going back and forth here.

AFC = Weaksauce? AFC 33-30-1 head to head against the NFC. Can’t call that weaksauce.

Seattle has been on a roll, for sure, but as someone already pointed out, the Hawks faced a pretty pathetic slate of games after their loss to KC in November. Arizona with their third-string QB (or was it 4th)? San Fran in a state of meltdown? St. Louis with their backup? Cam Newton with like 14 broken ribs and a ruptured spleen or two?

Yeah, they won against GB because Mike McCarthy took his foot off the gas too early. Stupid coaching = snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Fact: Seattle’s most convincing win of the season happened in week 1 against those same Packers.

Meanwhile, the Pats ran through 6 playoff teams (demolishing 5 of them, including Indy twice) and played another one to a virtual draw on their home turf.

Yes, I’m a Pats fan. No, I’m not certain the Pats will win. But disrespect them at your own peril. I’m taking New England on a last-second field goal – the perfect bookend to the Brady legacy.

  145. After doing such a masterful job of demonizing the Brady Bunch; do you really think they will turn off the lights This Year, if Seattle’s (more aptly named) Heirs Apparent, have the lead at halftime?

Unless New England can quickly sign a certain linebacker, for yet another swan song, the Patriots’ proverbial goose, has already been cooked.

  146. as i said before, no pressure on Brady, Seattle will not win this second half….Brady n co. should be up by at least a touchdown at half….
