Bill Belichick: Final Seahawks pass didn’t surprise me

Getty Images

The Seahawks had the ball on the Patriots’ 1-yard-line with less than a minute to play in the Super Bowl and they needed a touchdown to win the game.

Just about everyone watching the game expected to see the Seahawks hand the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch. In a decision that will life in the nightmares of Seahawks fans for a long, long time, Seattle put the ball in the air and Patirots rookie Malcolm Butler picked off a pass intended for Ricardo Lockette to slam the door on Seattle’s hopes of repeating.

It’s a call that was questioned immediately by just about everyone watching the game and was a question from Dan Patrick of NBC Sports for Bill Belichick after the game.

“They’re goal-line plays. That didn’t surprise me,” Belichick said. “They do a lot of things down there. We had to be ready for everything.”

The Patriots were ready for what the Seahawks threw their way in the entire fourth quarter as they erased a 10-point deficit, but no singular moment will loom larger than the play Butler made to seal the victory.

  1. Russell ‘Chokes’ Wilson is only effective when he runs. Well at least we won’t have to put up with the Seattle bandwagon fans any more. There’s that.

  2. Let me think- do I hand it to my power back who they can’t stop? Or do I throw in traffic?

    I throw in traffic.

    Or maybe not.

  3. You can take Bevel out of Minnesota but you cant take the Viking out of Bevel. WORST CALL EVER!

  4. And to all those people (like Collinsworth) saying that the Pats should have let the Seahawks score there, I say Nonsense!! It’s not like a FG would have beat them. They needed a goal line stand. They got it. You don’t ever just give them the TD if they need a TD.

  5. Cheat Carroll and Russell Wilson demand an explanation as to why the winning interception wasn’t called a touchdown catch.

  6. Easy to second guess after it didn’t work.
I hate the Pat, but give them credit. Brady came back on the LOB. Face it, LOB could have won the game but did not.
Seattle rolled the dice at halftime and it was a great call. Rolled it again in the last minute and it didn’t work out.
NE stepped up and made the plays, give them props.

Plus, if Seattle had run twice and gotten stuffed, we would be saying why didn’t they mix it up…

    Good game, tough ending…

  7. Hahaha. That play was AWESOME!!

Now, anyone want to know why they called it? They called that play to elevate Wilson. apparently, the coaches bought the hype about Wilson beating all the greats and being elite? HILARIOUS!

  8. My Packers choked away a certain win a couple of weeks ago, and now the classless Seahawks top it with one of the dumbest calls in the history of professional football – and in the biggest game of the year.

How does it feel? Does it taste bitter?

  9. Belichick isn’t the greatest coac of all time.

Goodell needs to resign if he has any integrity.

  10. Team is going in implode second guessing that call. Lynch is pissed. Defense is pissed. I hope you enjoyed a couple years “12th man”. It’s back to mediocrity chumps. Hey at least you can start the next cycle this week. Bring on the Deca boys! Stay classy Seattle

  11. that play will forever erase Red Right 88 from everyone’s memory forever. With Lynch in your backfield, and the clock on your side. Worst play call in history. I don’t know how the Seahawks recover or Bevel sleeps again

  12. A lot of venom against the Seahawks. I imagine if they would have won the Patriot haters would be on here.

A bad call, but not because it didn’t work, but because running it, with a few time outs, would have let them run more time off the clock giving Brady even less time to have after the TD. And if they get stopped twice, they are still going for it on 4th, so run, run, run made so much more sense.

  13. Doug Baldwin pretending to take a dump on the field didn’t surprise me either

    Stanford proud

Please pay Wilson an insane amount of money. Good QB but average passer

  14. All down hill from here Seattle. Good luck with signing Lynch and Wilson to those monster deals and assembling a roster around that money that will get back to the Super Bowl. The worst call I have ever seen in my life.

  15. you got the Beast on the 1 and you don’t hand it off? wow, how BB can say with a straight face he wasn’t surprised, no one knows

  16. Russell Wilson CHOKED. Pete Carroll CHOKED. Seattle – your team is 1-3 in Super Bowls. Your star QB went 12-21 and a pick with the game on the line.

Then your team went all roid rage and attacked the opponent.

You have NO IDEA how happy your meltdown and choke job made the rest of the sporting world. There is NO BETTER sight in sports than watching Pete Carroll go from good time Charley to sad clown face in the blin of an eye.

    GO AWAY SEATTLE

  17. The fight at the end of the game didn’t surprise me. It’s the type of behavior you’d expect from two dirty teams known for cheating.

  18. Darrell Bevell just went from the short list of HC candidates to not even on it after that call. The single worst call in NFL history. He should be fired in the morning. Darrell – you just handed the rare back to back SB away. FIRED

  19. Bill Belichick may have have been the only one not surprised by that. Awful play call, but a great play by Butler.

I can’t stand the Pats but credit to them for coming back from 10 down in the 4th and winning the Super Bowl.

  20. Everything in life balances out. The Tyree catch took a Super Bowl victory away from the Pats in ’07, and it was balanced out by the Butler interception. Pats’ have the four Lombardis they deserve – just not the four you’d have expected at the start of the games.

  21. Oh don’t worry seattle…

The Commish has already figured it out…

Pats cheated… They intercepted the call going to Wilson, which was originally called a run, just a simple dive play for lynch, but as they intercepted it, they actually called it in, under bevel’s voice, to Wilson, and called a pick play.

So you seahawk fans can put an asterisk or claim the pats cheated… however you want to fold the bacon, the seahawks lost…

This wasn’t a “collapse”… It was just the fact that Brady wanted the 4th…

The “collapse” was actually two weeks ago.. It was the pack losing to the seahawks.. That “collapse” rivals the sinking of the titanic.

  22. I just got a phone call from my 75 year old grandma
who only watches one football game a year
the Super Bowl and she called me asking my why
they did not run it with Marshawn Lynch.
The Seattle fans have got to be Sick and so is the
Defense. Even my 75 year old Grammy knows
that you don’t throw a pass right there.
hell NE was going to let them score so they would have enough time for a long FG shot.

  23. i’m a vikings fan, and i started having flashes to one of my most unpleasant memories of football when i saw that catch by kearse…almost a complete replica of Antonio Freeman/Chris Dishman…

not only did butler make an incredible pick to end the game, but he had the awareness to see that catch by kearse through…kearse scores if butler thinks the play is over. that’s how good this guys awareness is.

  24. Very few single plays are epically bad enough to tarnish legacies and sow the seed of discord into hitherto successful organizations . I’m pretty sure we just saw one of those.

  25. It’s obvious isn’t it folks? Bob Kraft sent Pete Carroll deep under-cover back in 1999 when he supposedly fired him… all part of a plan to have him go back to USC, then the NFL to get to this point in time and throw the Super Bowl to the Patriots in dramatic fashion.

The Patriots are the best cheaters – they violated a 2006 rule in 2001-2004 – KNOWING that the rule would change in the future.

They likely broke several rules that aren’t yet rules this season – and now the Pete Carroll double-agent play calling PROVES it.

This is all common sense! Why won’t people respect such LogicalVoices?

  26. Lost in this is butler saved the TD also on that incredible catch two plays earlier. He got up off the ground and kept playing and made the tackle at 4 yard line

  27. PATRIOT HATERS. BOW DOWN PUNKS. BOW TO THE CHAMPS. SHUT YOUR STINKING HOLES AND GET ON YOUR KNEES. KISS THE RINGS.

  28. funny thing reading all the comments on NFL page. The lucky circus catch never gets mentioned, but the pass call at the end OMG. If the Pats Harmon on that catch played like the LOB and smashed into Kearse instead of jumping over him there would not have been a chance for that bad play call.

  29. Wilson says the call came from the sideline to throw. Why didn’t he audible to a run knowing that they had a time out left and 20 seconds on the clock? Man, I am glad he didn’t though. Haha. Now, can we stop all this “Wilson is elite” nonsense? He is mediocre and that is what he will always be.

  30. Wilson had something to do w/call. He was pushing for an MVP play thinking he would outsmart the Pats. He choked and now we can stop listening to how great he is. Why anyone would throw the ball at that point in the game into that vicinity is behind mind boggling. Seattle dismantles from here. I bet Lynch wants out after that slap in the face.

  31. Funny how those armchair head coaches are calling out the real coaches, go to bed, you have to go to your maintenance job tomorrow losers

  32. I think we’re missing the real issue, and that is that this year’s Super Bowl ads were terrible.

  33. I hope this game begins a downward spiral for the Seahawks that they don’t recover from for 20 years.

  34. Sure Bill, sure you were not surprised. Very arrogant statement. The whole world, including Belichek, expected a run, which is why New England had so many players in the middle of the goal line where the interception occurred.

  35. All the time in the world to evaluate what and what not to do. Plenty of time, time outs, and marshawn lynch on your team. Not fair to the Seahawk players for that bone head play call by who ever made it.

  36. theheyseed says:

If the Pats Harmon on that catch played like the LOB and smashed into Kearse instead of jumping over him there would not have been a chance for that bad play call.

I agree completely, but I have no doubt that had he hit Kearse while he was on the ground, there would have been a flag. That’s the only reason he jumped over him. It would have drawn a flag. Which stinks.

  37. I told you, pats fans just had to be patient and those haters (vancouversportbra, realnflmaster, chipwood, the seahawks fans et all) will have to bow down to reality, now kiss the rings clowns

  38. Seattle, you could’ve got out with class and know you had the game won. Both teams proved their points–one team cheats to win, the other has no class.

  39. “I say everyone in America needs to boycott Kraft products because he his a cheat . This championship is forever tainted”

    *****

    ummmm -he’s not THAT Kraft….

  40. As a Pack fan, I didn’t think anything would make me feel better than just getting to next season. But, to see an even bigger choke job really made me feel better. I even had a couple $$ on Seattle, but it was kinda like paying a shrink. Money well spent.

  41. Funny how the comments swing. If Seattle scored, whether the pass is caught, or they use Lynch, everyone is pounding on the Pats can’t win, they’re cheaters, deflated footballs, spy gate, chokers, etc.

But the defender makes a great read and gets the int. Now Wilson sucks, Seattle chokes, etc.

No longer can we have a good/great game. No longer can someone make a great read/play. The loser chokes, the winner doesn’t win.

Still don’t know why you don’t use Lynch. Bad play call when it doesn’t work.

  42. Patriots fan here.

Tom gave the Hawks a couple and Russell gave the Patriots one back. It happens.

The situation and timing, however, tends to magnify things. If the Russell pick happens in the first half it just gets compared to the Brady pick in the same span.

  43. The worst play call was the Pats DB getting beat and as he’s falling he tackles Lockette … I guess the refs missed that one.

  44. “Seattle’s choke job was far worse than GB’s. ”

Not even close, but I don’t blame you for being bitter. Had a chance to win the super bowl, lost on the last play. GB blew MULTIPLE opportunities.

Wish Bevell had been hired away, you give it to the beast TWICE before you try and pass it, but ultimately NE won it. Congrats to them.

  45. As someone who grew up near Green Bay and graduated from UW-Madison long ago, it really pained me to see Russell Wilson not win, and to see the Seahawks use a Mike McCarthy type play call there at the end. We know the feeling, he does it to the Packers all the time….instead of taking the win let’s try to be clever. Feel bad for Hawks fans. Like us last week, it was sure win that only stupidity could lose.

    That’s a great comment!!

  48. HAHA ooops there goes the fake dynasty.
Patriots were never going to lose to a game manager
Pats are true professionals and the Seahawks could learn a thing or two about winning and class…And

    #REAL dynasty

  49. Belichick didn’t come clean even after winning the Super Bowl. Totally not saying anything like a criminal under questioning. Just a bunch of non-committal pat answers and hardly acted excited. He knows he’s busted on the deflated footballs. Glad they won though. See Bill,Tom and MR. Kraft in 2016 after they each receive a one year suspension for CHEATING. I’ve never seen a luckier team then the Hawks and Russel probably thought he could drop back 60 yards and God would just hand the ball to one of the Hawks in the E.Z. after throwing it falling down with five Pats on him. Not tonight little Russell ,going to be a long, long, long off season.

  50. To all the Idiots lambasting Wilson, he didn’t call the play.

He also outplayed Brady. 10 point higher passer rating.

Edelman deserved the MVP. Not Brady

  51. Said it at the time to everyone in the room – the Baldwin drop in 4th Q on great pass by Wilson on 3rd down that would have set-up Seattle for more points and killed more clock was THE key play of the game. A catch there and points secures a Seahawks win. Instead, they gave Brady life, and the Legion of Boom went BUST.

As for the ending – We have “The Catch”, “The Fumble”, “The Immaculate Reception”, now we’ve got a new title that will live forever in NFL history: “THE PLAY CALL”.

  52. No Bill, you just remembered what Petey did vs Texas in the Rose Bowl. This was dumber than not having Reggie Bush on the field for a 4th & 2. It will go down as the DUMBEST play in Super Bowl history, NO DOUBT.

I cant help but think that if PCarroll were McCarthy, the Seattle OC would be history.
    ==========================

Slocum was fired by McCarthy for years of ineptitude culminating in the worst special teams in the league this year.

They had 7 kicks blocked this year. SEVEN. Many of them extra points.

It wasn’t just for the hideous playoff performance, it was for MULTIPLE seasons of ineptitude.

Slocum should have been fired years ago.

  54. Just a bone headed decision for the ages……
You give it to Lynch 4 times there if need be. But, you throw it with the Pats on the ropes after a spectacular catch, and you decide to throw it. Overconfident, or just stupid? I think it was a bit of both, but what a lost opportunity. They had it at the 1/2 yard line and they run it. I would have understood Wilson running it from there, but throwing it? Just a very bad decision.

  55. Darryl Bevell should quit the nfl, why would you try to get cute with that play call? no wonder you didn’t get considered for any job openings

  56. The Seahawks have been the most mediocre franchise in NFL history. However, since their last 2 years were very good, so many of thief fans have became insufferable bores.

Seattle fans, hopefully the next time your team make it to the top you will show a little more respect and humility. There has to be a reason why so many of us wanted the Patriots to win that game.

  57. Questionable call, but I haven’t lost that much respect for Wilson. Playoffs in all 3 yrs, 2 super bowl appearances with 1 victory and what should have been 2.

  60. Bad play call but bottom line is Brady > LOB. He torched them 2 drives in a row. Of course all eyes are on this one play but the truth is the Hawk’s defense failed in the 4th Q and Brady was brilliant.

How about we ban the phrase “Haters gonna hate” from the English language? Never have people sounded so ignorant and uneducated than when they parrot that phrase.

  64. they got 4 yards with lynch on first down if the pats then stopped lynch 3 times on the 1 all we would be talking about is a epic goal-line stand not why they didn’t mix it, they put themselves in a position to lose but taking the ball out of the hands of their best offensive player who’s plays carry the lowest risk to forcing a UDFA to catch a ball in heavy traffic thrown terribly.

  65. In related news, there was another earthquake in Seattle. Ironically Beastmode was involved yet again. Scientists have pinpointed the cause of the quake due to the massive and sudden jump off the bandwagon bandwagon by the so-called 12th man when the Hawks did NOT give yeah ball to Lynch.

  67. Watching the highlights. What does that punk Sherman have against a class act like Revis. Revis never talks smack yet when Baldwin scored when Revis got tied up with the back judge…….Sherman ran to the sideline camera and flashed Revis’s number 24 with his fingers and mouthed the number as well. Well Richard……enjoy your crow you classless punk. 24 got the ring…….and not Least Mode!!!!

  68. Complete bush league of Seattle players to start that scrum at the end.

PS. Your team didn’t lose because of a bad call (not just a bad call, maybe the worst ever), they were dominated in the first half and fortunate to be in the game. That catch that Kearse made in the 4th, pretty lucky there too. The Seahawks had chances early in the 4th to put the game out of reach and couldn’t do it. The better team won.

Funny how things work out, Dallas beats the Lions on a BS call, and then next week gets jobbed against GB, then GB dominates but Seattle advances, and now justice has come to the Hawks. NFL karma.

  69. It was a good call. The Patriots were selling out for the run. If they stuffed him for a 2 yard loss, everyone would be talking about how OBVIOUS and CONSERVATIVE the playcalling was.

  70. With 20 seconds to go, on second and 1 and only 1 timeout, a pass was going to have to be called either on that down or the next. If the Seahawks run it and are stopped, they either have to hurry up to the line or call a time out. They probably call a timeout. Now it’s 3rd and 1 with 13 seconds or less to go and ZERO timeouts. If they run it and fail there probably isn’t enough time to get back up and run another play, as defensive players will pile on the RB and time will expire before the Seahawks are set to go for it on 4th down. So a pass would’ve probably been called on 3rd down. If it falls incomplete you still have time to run the final play of the game. A pass was going to have to be called on either 2nd or 3rd down. They chose to call it on 2nd down to preserve the final timeout, if the 2nd down try failed. Unfortunately, it didn’t fall incomplete, it was intercepted.
The Seahawks still played a great game. The Patriots played a little better and beat us.

  71. First Green Bay choked to Seattle, then Seattle choked to New England.

LOL – Lynch had pver 100 yards, and had just gashed the defense. Didn’t he lead the league in TD this year? With timeouts in the pocket and two downs to work with NO ONE would have criticized the call to run it, are you kidding?

  74. Look man. Everybody thought Marshawn was going to get the ball. The pass play was the right play. You just have to give the Patriots props for being ready for it.

    __________________________
Maybe you should have actually watched the replay. Russell threw a good ball but Lockette short-armed it. That INT was not on Wilson. Yeah, he could have thrown a little more to the back shoulder, but if Lockette reaches out a little more, that ball is caught or possibly an incompletion.

And, if you think that you’re done with the “bandwagon” Seattle fans, you’re on drugs because we’re bringing back pretty much the entire 2014 team for another Super Bowl run!

    GO HAWKS!!!!

  78. To all the Patriots fans who are bashing Seattle and to all Seahawk haters posting here, way to keep it classy!

Your criticisms of Seattle and its fans as being arrogant and classless ring pretty freakin’ hollow when you can’t demonstrate class yourselves!

GO HAWKS!!! Two straight years as one of the two best teams in the NFL and on our way to a third!

  79. Yeah terrible call, no doubt. An epic, all-time blunder. But it was also a matter of living and dying by the big play sword, too. I mean really …. the catch that set up the 1st and goal was insane.

When you have that kind of bad juju (ridiculous game winning catches) going against you as it did in the Pats two SB losses, eventually it swings back the other way.

  80. Lol- Losers talk about Passer ratings and completion percentages! Winners go home with a Victoria’s Secret Super Model & a Lombardi trophy!!!!
Much respect to the Pats!!! This has been without question, the best Franchise the past 15 years in League history! You have the greatest QB & Coach of all time! That’s how you win in this league!!!
As a Viking fan, I could only hope my squad takes notes on How to Draft, Scout, train, Scheme, practice, perform, Coach a perennial winner!!! Congrats pats! You could not have beat a more tasteless organization! I have a ton of respect for R. wilson. Unfortunate , he had to be involved on that play!

  81. Brady just lit up the supposed best Defense in history for 4 TDs on a surgical 37 of 50 attempts. That’s an MVP performance that has nothing to do with freaking air pressure.

  82. Kind of strange that, after weeks of us hearing how the Seahawks were liberated by no longer having to force the ball to Harvin, and could return to their core as a running team, they lose the game on a forced throw from the QB.

Can’t really fathom any reason for the call other than some kind of gift to Wilson. Hard to see how that will sit well with the rest of the team.

Two excellent teams. One fought just a smidgen harder. Congrats to the Pats on officially rising to all-time-great status. Packers, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, Pats. The apex has a new member.

SEA has 1 timeout remaining, and therefore even if you’re stuffed for a loss, you still have a 3rd down. The play there needed to prioritize not committing a turnover, and Lynch has been good in the game – in fact, even if Lynch had gotten the carry and then fumbled, there would have been less criticizing on SEA.

Hats off to NE for a well played game and their 4th SB Championship.

To all Hawks fans…the sun will also rise tomorrow…I’m hoping for a new OC come next summer…enough is enough of predictably running on first and 2nd down.

Worst 2nd and 1 to go for a game winning score I’ve seen in 50 plus years of watching football.

Thanks Hawks for your fight today!!

  86. Copying the same comments on several post.

I thought NE had it. looked away and then Seattle was at the goal line. Why the hell did Pete call a pass play on 2nd and goal?

I don’t care for either team but I hate the Seattle trolls so I’m glad the Patriots won. Now the Seattle trolls can go the way of the Saints.

  87. Just heard on the news that there were a lot of earthquakes in Arizona and Seattle. Maybe not that big of a deal but they all happened at the same time. Goodell said it was from all of the Seattle band wagon fans jumping off the wagon.

I swear god hates the Seahawks.

I now know what it feels like to be a Packers or Vikings fan. Even a Colts fan after Manning threw it right to Tracy Porter.

    Why. Why.

    —————————————————————–

You have no idea what it is like to wake up everyday and laugh at the world knowing that the Green Bay Packers are your favorite football team.

  89. The LOB was on life support. Loosing Lane was the killer. That left only Maxie at full strength. Plenty of what ifs but in the end we lost and i say congrats to the Pats. As for the last play call don’t fret 12’s ITS OVER and SB49 will never be played again. Cherish SB48 which we couldn’t do for so long. Im off to the combine, looks like we got a 6-5 225lber in Chris.

  90. Didn’t MMcCarthy fire Ed Donnatell after 4th and 26? So he has a history of scapegoating.

I cant help but think that if PCarroll were McCarthy, the Seattle OC would be history.
    ==========================

  91. your supposed to wait to get desperate when your almost sure thing 2 chances to get 1 yard fails.
    epic epic epic clown show.
and the better team won that one.
remember the question during the joint coaches press confrence,
“how do you make sure you as a coach do not choke in the 4th quarter?”
    amazing…

  92. The fact is that virtually everyone on the planet other than Carroll would have had Lynch run the ball in on 2nd and 1 for the go ahead TD. This isn’t just 20/20 hindsight when all thought this when we saw the play unfold. It was only CONFIRMED by the interception. Sure, a game winning passing TD at that moment would have probably made the decision avoid too much scrutiny. BUT, that isn’t what happened.

Carroll’s lame excuse that he was worried about scoring to quick, WHILE LOSING, and leaving too much time on the clock for Brady is RIDICULOUS. Carroll actually said he was thinking about 3rd and 4th down, and what would happen AFTER NE got the ball back, INSTEAD OF ENSURING AN IMMEDIATE SCORE… The ONLY INTELLIGENT CALL is to go for the SCORE, by the best and safest means available when 2nd and 1, which was Marshawn Lynch. THEN, you allow your #1 defense do what they have been doing ALL year. All your #1 defense had to do was hold Brady and NE offense for ONLY 20 SECONDS. The FACT is that apparently Carroll had no faith in his defense if he was so worried about them holding Brady for 20 seconds!

  93. Huh so everybody that watched the game knew they couldn’t stop the run, but Bill knew they would pass? How did Bill know? I bet he found a smaller camera to tape that all important Super Bowl run through!!

  94. If anybody “Demands an explanation” it’s not Drew Brees or Rex Ryan, it’s Marshawn Lynch. Pete Carol has some explaining to do.

  95. I disagree with the author. The biggest story by far is the vaunted Seattle defense giving up not one, but TWO long TD-scoring drives to the Pats in the last quarter.
It’s typical that all the media parrots the same crap yet overlooks such a huge part of the outcome.

I say everyone in America needs to boycott Kraft products….

LOL. Have fun boycotting paper products and cardboard.

The only things that might be associated with Robert Kraft in supermarkets is the cardboard that contains miscellaneous products – whether they be “Kraft” products or other companies (and it is possible the supermarket cardboard is not associated with any of Robert Kraft’s business holdings).

  97. @gobolts: I think you’re thinking of your chargers.

Seattle actually won a SB- your bolts are not even close, ever.

Stop being a fool and pull your head out of the sand.

    Go Raiders

  98. BB was just being gracious. Almost nothing gets past the guy: the only reasonable explanation for why he didn’t take a time out with the ball on the half yard line was he guessed that a flustered Carroll might make a mistake like this. He was right. Pete Carroll finally ‘won’ a Super Bowl trophy for the Patriots– except that he doesn’t coach them any longer.

  99. It was an incredible end to a game, reminds one of the Rams / Titans tilt that ended one-yard short for the Titans.

For all the talk about the Legion of Boom, however… Brady came out MVP with 4 TDs and over 300 yards passing.

Hard to grade Wilson’s performance. Outside 4 freak play passes he barely has any stats to put on the stat sheet. Do you embrace the big-plays to the no-name guys and circus catches or do you ignore those as aberrations and grade the performance play-by-play? If you ignore the freak plays you grade him an ‘F’ I think. With the freak plays he still comes in at only a C+. I mean the guy throws a bunch of punts that should have resulted in the same number of picks that Green Bay got in the championship. He did make a couple of Patriot’s defenders look real bad though on scrambles.

On the whole, I’d still rather have Brady.

  100. It was a *bad* play call.

    (1) Obviously you run the ball in that situation. You have the best RB in the league, and the Patriots were just gashed on the prior run play.

    (2) If you anticipate the defense trying to stack the goal line, then any pass play should be made outside, such as to a TE left uncovered in the back corner of the end zone. What you *don’t* do is call a pass play into the thick of things. Too many things can go wrong, such as a tipped ball at the line, or the ball bouncing off the WR’s hands and falling directly into the defender, or a possible holding penalty on an offensive lineman. A run play would have been a safer play, and it’s clear that Bellichick is simply covering Carroll.

  101. Lynch has not been successful (generally) this year in the red zone–1 for 5 from the 1 yd. line this year. In addition, the Patriots were one of the best in the league this year in stopping RB’s in those situations. They gave up only 6 rushing touchdowns ALL YEAR.

Just some food for thought for everyone bashing Seattle’s goal line call. If Wilson throws it at Lockette’s chest and the guy squares to the ball, it’s a touchdown. Kearse didn’t pick the play and Seattle didn’t execute it right. It wasn’t really risky, just done improperly.

You just about never see an interception on those plays.

  102. everybody’s way overdoing the ‘worst call ever’ thing – the majority probably are just regurgitating other people’s comments.

    Look the replay in slow-mo…

Lockett was WIDE OPEN – Butler just was prepared and make a legendary pick

  103. I do feel for the Seahawks, they are an exciting team, but I guess after awhile the cuteness caught up with them. What hurts is, that Malcolm Butler’s bump looked like a Richard Sherman move. PAY BACK.

  104. Belichick is knows for having his team extremely well prepared for every contingency! It doesn’t surprise me that they may have practiced to defend this formation/play! The last 30 minutes of practice always has the situational football component! This undoubtedly was practiced! Instead of playing strict man, they decided to switch off. That gave Butler the chance to make the INT!

  105. Legion of Tomb; RIP

Pete Carrol: 2nd Best Coach of All Time (To New England Fans) Secured With That Call.

Went With The Strategic Play To Cover All Downs Instead of The Emotional Call to Just Drive It, and Worked Great For Us.

Though I Think That Bill The Master of Strategy Would Have Had The Same Plan There; Just Would Have Ended The Game A Snag by Edelman Since Pats the Dealers When It Comes to Those Plays.

NO OTHER HEAD COACH AND QB DUO HAS WON SUPER BOWLS TEN YEARS APPART

That Accomplishmemt Alone Speaks to the Testemant of How Dominant This Franchise Has Remained Throughout This Decade.

Thankful to The Lord for This Unmatched Blessing.

    Pats Best Forever!

  106. In hindsight, it looks like New England was baiting Seattle to throw the ball on that down. Their defense had practiced against the play run extensively, and Bellicheck probably felt confident on them stopping it or even taking it away.

Personnel wise, the Seahawks should have had Chris Mathews instead of Kearse to jam Browner. Kearse got pawned by Browner and wasn’t able to make the push which causes the rub, giving Butler a free lane to the ball. I was hoping to see a read option or a fade route run, but alas, the OC called a slant play. It did not appear the Seahawks had practiced the play much given the lackadaisical execution-ball thrown chest high and leading the receiver instead of low and to the gut, the receiver casually making his way to the ball, etc.The Patriot defense appeared to have practiced against it more than the Seahawk offense had.

  107. I was expecting the Hawks to 1) run Lynch or 2) Wilson faked the ball to Lynch and Wilson would run the ball to the end zone. But I never expected Wilson to throw the ball when it seemed that there was no WRs open.
