Marshawn Lynch not surprised by final offensive call, says it’s a team sport

AP

The Seahawks were a yard away from a touchdown and a lead with under a minute to play in the Super Bowl, which is pretty much the textbook time to call on Marshawn Lynch.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll opted to go a different way, however. As he explained after the game, he called a pass because of the personnel the Seahawks had on the field and Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler intercepted it to seal the fourth Super Bowl title in Patriots history.

Plenty of people were surprised by the play call, but Lynch joined Patriots coach Bill Belichick in saying he wasn’t surprised that Carroll decided to put the ball in the air at that moment in the game.

“No. Because we play football. It’s a team sport,” Lynch said, via Jim Trotter of ESPN.

Plenty of other Seahawks players did express surprise about the decision to go with a pass rather than the running back who scored 17 touchdowns in the regular season and had already scored once in the Super Bowl. Even though it shortchanges Butler’s play and the other 59 minutes of the game, that surprise will likely remain a major topic of conversation for a while in Seattle.

  1. Now you know how niner fans feel about not running your beast rb at the goal line in super bowl. Darrel Bevell pulled a Greg roman. Hurts doesn’t it? Sorry not sorry.

  2. You win some and you lose some. The ‘Hawks had a great season, becoming the first team in 10 years to go to back-to-back Super Bowls. We love ya, ‘Hawks. Congratulations to New England on an outstanding game.

  3. I am not a fan of Lynch but I have to give him kudos for his comments. He is not throwing anyone under the bus and I can respect that. Win together lose together. That’s sportsmanship.

  4. It is a team sport…thing is when the game is on the line, your best offensive player needs to be involved. Ricardo Lockette is the 4th WR on a team that is full of #3 receivers. How are you making him the guy to make a play and not Lynch?

  5. Love Lynch. Hate that team. When Wilson leads a comeback, we give him credit. When he loses the game, it’s his coordinators fault? Sounds about right.

  6. The 53 pay for the idiot call by OC Bevell again. Dude has to go. If he pulls a Goodell and is Teflon after this I expect less fans wasting a Sunday watching him screw up games.
    Go Hawks!

  7. Like to see the class from beast and the other ‘hawks. Either way you look at it that rookie CB made a great play. Give him credit.

Just one look at these boards and you can see the average Pats fan has no class. They give the kid no credit for a great play that won the game.

Congrats to the Pat’s fans that still have some class, I know you are out there. So many of you though, it’s too bad – you don’t deserve it. Just a bunch of crass juveniles.

  8. Lynch easily scores there but really if Patriots didn’t win then the cheating allegation seemed weak….. Now everyone knows they won BECAUSE they cheated…. Now when the suspensions are handed down, they actually mean something…. Belicheat will get a year and Brady gets 8 games…. Pats fans have to live with it too shame really!

  9. Beast, it is a team sport, but that means you make the best call for the team, not that you take turns playing the ball…. and that call was handoff 2 more times to the Beast….

you got 3 yards on the first run, you don’t think you can get one more in 2 more tries?

biggest mistake in a SB ever

  10. At the game in ‘zona…. Ouch… Hawk fans shaking our heads as we watched them literally “throw?????” the game away…. For us real fans… Heartbreaking…great game and great season… GO HAWKS!

  11. Trying to fight the other team when they are in the victory formation because you lost is not surprising to non Seattle fans. It’s the reason they are so easy to root against. I like lynch a lot but not a lot of “class” on that team.

  12. Since when is doing what every person in the building is expecting you to do the correct play call? The Patriots already had a goal line stand against Lynch earlier in the game. The Seahawks were in an obvious four down territory but didn’t have enough time on the clock to run it four times with only one timeout.

I’m a massive Pats fan, but I have no problem with that play call. It was gutsy and Carroll would have been hailed as a genius if it worked. Bust just like the 4th & 2 play against the Colts that is burned into the memory of Pats fans, sometimes the right call just doesn’t work.

  13. I get it, and agree with calling a pass, but not THAT pass into the middle of the defense. If you run Lynch and have to call a time out, you get one more chance. With a pass, if the guy is WIDE OPEN, take it; if not, throw it away to stop the clock. Then, you still have time to run it twice. You’re getting a free play, but you cannot take a sack or an INT.

  14. To all of those who say “goodbye bandwagon seahawk fans”, I turned 36 today and I’ve been on this bandwagon for 36 years and 9 months. So I don’t plan on getting off this bandwagon anytime soon. You, on the other hand, jumped off the moment your team got eliminated from the playoffs!!

  15. Lynch doesn’t seem like the type of dude to talk down to his coaches or his team. I like him and Russell Wilson and I gained some respect for Sherman tonight.

  16. Congratulations patriots nation on you win in a very exciting game and thank you for all your classy and true sportsmanship comments. It makes coming in second easier

  17. Bevel did not call the play. Pete said it was his idea. But right now, I am in morning. Hung up my gear for now and will wear black.. Damn. But we dodged a lot of bullets, pulled a lot of rabbits out of the hat, odds were against us in some respects…Good year, lot of fun and drama. It is after all just a game….Sniff, cry a tear. go to bed and wake up tomorrow and go to work

  18. Belicheck said he wasn’t surprised by the call. Well, apparently not!

2nd down and 2, I’ll never quite figure out why they didn’t give it to Lynch. Execution of the play was poor, but the decision to run the play was even worse.

Good game all around, though, but that one’s gonna leave a mark for a while…

  19. Lynch could arguably be the greatest short yardage back in history, Lynch can literally walk a yard with an entire opposing team on his back. So what would you call?

  20. NFL told the Seahawks before the game to not put them in the position of having to name Marshawn Lynch MVP. “Conspiracy Theory” I would had love to see what he would had said on the podium.

  21. Lol- whoever called it that was the dumbest call of all time. If it was Bevell I’m sure Arthur Blanks is not getting a good night sleep tonight

While I understand what they are feeling. I mean, we had to take a lot of flak over the last couple weeks. In the end, they should take a pretty large page out of the Pats notebook and just congrats everyone out there.

It was an amazing game. Honestly, I thought it was pretty much over 10 down. Then again with the crazy catch. I was thinking “A third time?! Seriously?” Glad it didn’t turn out that way, lol.

  23. Worst play call I’ve ever seen. Was it so Lynch wouldn’t win the MVP and not talk to the media…its the only way I can make sense of it. Also, don’t understand how Belicheck doesn’t take a time out at 2nd and goal from the 1 yd line, and give his team most likely 45+ seconds.

  24. What is not mentioned is the second error by the Seahwaks when they had Brady backed up to the goal line and had the encroachment penalty. Game was not quite over… Back to back moronic plays to prevent back to back Super Bowl titles.

  25. Boneheaded call. When Russ dropped back all I could say was ” please tell me he’s not throwing the ball right now with a t.o. left, lynch lathered up n ready and twenty ticks left after lynch just ran for five And almost scored” even revis said he was surprised They didn’t hand it to lynch . most painful and heart breaking loss as a hawks fan ive ever experienced. Even if they stop beast 3 times thad be a better way to go out then getting scared and cute then choking it up. At least u know u went out swinging with your best player!!! This one will sting for a while!! Seeing them Going out soft is worse than losing the bowl!! Ah well good game and hats off n.e.!!! I’m still proud of my boys we played till the end and the ride this season has been magical!! I’ll be wearing my blue and green tomorrow!! I’m still in!!!!!! Goooo hawks!!!!!!!!

  26. Anyone else flabbergasted that Tafoya would grab the rookie Butler before he can go celebrate with his teammates then bring up deflategate with Kraft on her first question?

Classless Michelle and NBC. It was all about you was it???

  27. You KNOW he wanted it in that situation. Actually very classy of him not to gripe and moan about the play call. I listened to some ESPN radio driving home from an SB party and Grey said that some of the Hawks were rather irked (mad as hornets) about it. Didn’t get to hear anyone though.

  28. Lynch of all players, the one most effected by the stupid call, the one with the most right to be upset, ends up having the best reaction to it. Props to him.

You win as a team, but a lot of Seahawks seem to not realize you lose as a team too

Something Demaryius thomas needs to learn, he through his team under the bus and rolled over them. As a team you win together, you lose together but you live to fight another season together

  30. I think my favorite part was seeing sherman head to the locker room with tears in his eyes and finally shutting his fat mouth. Talking about how baldwin scored on revis……I bet he learns his lesson now…..And don’t worry, you guys will lose a few players come russell wilsons contract lol

  31. Oh Well !! Seahawks rode “The Beast” all the way to the SB then after taking it down to the one yard line they decide to throw it ??!!!! I find irony in that…………..still glad they made it that far but after the “fumble/catch” that put them in short yardage & goal in the first place i thought it was destiny to run the rock with the beast. We’ll see what’s left of the team after off-season trades, draft, etc. Hopefully they can make another run at it but boy did they Screw the Pooch and gave the game away. Bad call whoever made it….

  32. They missed their golden chance at winning. After paying Wilson and dealing with injuries and not getting fortunate so often. The Seahawks will glide into a good but not great team going forward

The Baltimore Ravens are STILL the ONLY franchise in the NFL to have been to MULTIPLE Super Bowls and have NEVER lost. 2-0 lets go RAVENS

    ======================================

You clearly have not been paying attention the past 2 weeks, as there has been an abundance of totally classless Pats fans showing what arrogant jerks they are.

  35. Football is a chess game, I have no problem with the Seahawks trying to catch NE slipping since they were in a Package to stop the run. So what if Seattle let NE off the hook, GB let them off the hook two weeks earlier.
I don’t dislike Seattle but Richard Sherman’s constant chirping makes it hard for me to root for that entire team. I wasn’t cheering for NE to win or Seattle to lose but something that would shut Sherman up for about five seconds. Congrats to the NE Patriots and Patriots Nation!
And to answer Sherman’s question in the waning moments of the game, “Who’s 24?” He’s the reigning Superbowl XLIX champion.

  36. GOAT. Won a superbowl after spy gate. The balls were not deflated. We won. We are champs AGAIN. Now what are people gonna say and type to attempt to break up our beautiful patriot nation?????

  37. Seattle’s last play(s) should have gone to Lynch. He was running thru the NE line like butter. Note the earlier TD by Lynch, unstoppable. Guess we know why Pete was fired by NE years ago….

  38. The best power back in the game
A 6″5″ receiver who could only be covered by a 6’4″ corner who has trouble staying in the league
    And you throw a slant?
Oh well, at least Lynch talked to the media. Happy now, Roger?

    ——————————————————
That team has a lot more class than the people on this board are showing.

  40. I have always admired Lynch as a football player, but never as a man. I have to say I’m very impressed with his comments on this. It would have been very easy to whine about not getting the ball. Behind the surliness lies not only a “man” on the field, but off it.

  41. I’ve been watching football for a very long time. I cannot remember a worse play call in my life, whatever is in 2nd place is a lost memory.

My predicition, this will sink the Seahawks for a long time to come.

  42. Wilson threw it where it was suppose to go according to the play. It’s a bang bang play. You have to trust in the play. Browner made the play by jamming Kearse at the line. That prevented Kearse from getting Browner pushed down field to rub off Butler. That didn’t happen and Butler got to the ball. If you are Wilson you have to trust in the play call. I wouldn’t have ran Lynch but I would have read option with Wilson. Wilson would have been one on one with Chandler Jones. If I was the Seahawks I’d take my chances. In the end Browner did his job and Butler made a great play. Congrats Pats.

  43. WHAAAAAAAA? Lynch spoke and he said something cool. Classy. See Beast Mode, you can talk to the media if you want and it turns out well. You just have to think it through before you speak!

Well done. Now have a conversation with everybody on your team with the exception of Russell W.

  44. Catastrophes like these are rarely a single point of failure.

    – Calling a pass play isn’t the dumbest thing ever. But not using Marshawn in a formation that at least gave the intention of a running play and/or the lack of playaction is where the play call was stupid.

    – Not throwing the ball to the back-shoulder or throwing it away if the play isn’t there, was bad execution by Wilson.

    – The NE DB made a great read an amazing play, but if one of the 2 points above was properly executed, the INT probably doesn’t happen.
