NFL announces Josh Gordon suspended at least one year

AP

It’s official: Josh Gordon will not play in the NFL at all in 2015, and isn’t assured of playing in 2016, either.

The NFL announced today that Gordon has been suspended and will remain suspended until after next year’s Super Bowl.

“Josh Gordon of the Cleveland Browns has been suspended without pay for at least one year for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Gordon’s suspension begins immediately,” the league’s official statement said.

The “at least one year” phrasing indicates that Gordon won’t automatically be reinstated a year from now. Gordon will be eligible to apply for reinstatement in a year, but he would only be reinstated if the NFL is convinced that he is committed to getting clean and staying clean.

Browns General Manager Ray Farmer released a statement indicating that the team would consider bringing him back in a year, but only if Gordon can demonstrate a commitment to getting his career on track.

“As we have conveyed, we are disappointed to once again be at this point with Josh,” Farmer said. “Throughout his career we have tried to assist him in getting support like we would with any member of our organization. Unfortunately our efforts have not resonated with him. It is evident that Josh needs to make some substantial strides to live up to the positive culture we are trying to build this football team upon. Our hope is that this suspension affords Josh the opportunity to gain some clarity in determining what he wants to accomplish moving forward and if he wants a career in the Nation Football League. We will have no further comment on Josh as he will not be permitted in our facility for the duration of his suspension.”

Gordon has great talent, and he’s still only 23 years old. He could still turn his life around and become an All-Pro receiver again. Or he could throw it all away and be remembered as one of the saddest wastes of talent in NFL history.

  1. He will fail another test during this suspension and end up in the CFL in two years. I know the CFL has a rule for not signing suspended NFL players, but if and when the Browns cut him he wont be an NFL player anymore.

  2. Did he sleep with Goodell’s wife or something? Why is the league out to get this guy so badly?

I mean he’s on his second strike before he gets into the NFL because he apparently earned his first in college.

He gets another for being late to a test because he was out of the country and notified the league and the team that he would be, to which they told him it was fine.

And now he gets pulled over and is .001 over the BAC and is suspended without being charged so much as a DUI because the amount was so small for a 5 foot man, let alone a 6’3” one.

So seriously did he sleep with Goodell’s wife?

  3. Can’t even feel bad for the kid. He has an opportunity of a life time and he’s throwing it away. Hell, I’d probably be doing the same if I played for the Browns.

  4. I know the jokes are coming, but I pray for the kid. I want him to succeed at life first, and then football. You can make it, Josh. Keep your eye on the horizon and your nose to the wind. Persevere, my friend.

  5. But but but, how can this be? There was a perfectly worded and grammatically correct statement “from Josh” saying that he’s not an alcoholic!

  6. Hmm. I have to disclose here, and add, I’m a psychiatric nurse and I’ve worked in rehabs, mental institutions, etc. Josh is what we call a “frequent flyer.” Sux, I know, but that’s the term everyone uses for guys like this. Time to reach for those bootstraps and pull thyself up, Josh.

  7. do the Browns have any players who aren’t alcoholics?

Undrafted freeagent rookie QB Connor Shaw, just to name one.

  8. It’s clear from that statement that Ray Farmer wants nothing to do with Josh Gordon. If there’s more to it than just failing these tests I don’t know, but if Ray is in Cleveland in 2016, I doubt Josh Gordon will be.

  9. What crap.

Tyrannical NFL. For BOOZE! What if you all lost your jobs when you get a DUI?

Any of you ever get a DUI? I bet you were allowed to keep your career.

The kid is 23 years old. Any of you ever dabble in pot when your were freaking 23? Any the NFL is willing to ruin his life because of this.

    Just awful.

  10. I appreciate the organization supporting this bonehead. Not many employers would do it. But some people get way too many opportunities in life, especially athletes. This guy has been given a pass his entire life because he can make money for others. It’s time to let him go and use one of those mid-first round picks on a WR or two. In a year he may get his act together and flourish, but let him do so elsewhere. I don’t care to hear about he’s young and still growing, he’s 23. At age 19 I hopped out the back of an Amtrac onto the shores of Somalia. I liked to get ripped then to (yes it was legal on base then), but I did my job when required. He lacks discipline and doesn’t really care. Stop enabling folks like this and set them to the side.

  11. “to live up to the positive culture we are trying to build this football team upon”
You gotta be kidding, right? You drafted Johnny Manziel to be your leader, no wonder Gordon went back to drinking! What a waste of talent…

  12. Roger didn’t waste any time with this one. Roger is still mad that Josh was back on the field this year with help from the players union. Roger will always win in the end.

It’s a good time to be an owner and a bad time to be a player. The players union better get stronger before they lose more ground the owners and their henchman Roger.

  13. Kudos to all of those who posted a positive message to Josh. I’m sure he trolls these boards and this will give him the motivation he needs.

  14. I don’t understand how having a beer is the same as beating up a 4 year old boy.

I think Adrian Peterson should be kicked out of the game forever.

Vikings fans, however, will rush to argue that Adrian Peterson is perfect and a great dad.

  15. Did he sleep with Goodell’s wife or something? Why is the league out to get this guy so badly?

    3 11

Nah he didn’ttouch Roger’s wife but he did find a white suit that the Ravens and Roger(the Raven Lap Dog) don’t want known. Seriously dude you need help…..the whining taught by the Ravens has permeated your DNA …get a grip.

  16. I betting Manziel knew this was happening and motivated him to get into rehab.

Shame about Gordon, only 23 and probably done in his chosen profession.

  17. Cut him and manziel. They have let down the organization their teammates, their coaches and their fans. You are not in the business of running a recovery center you are in the business to win. Cut all ties to these irresponsible idiots.

  18. “Next time just carry around a briefcase full of money and pills. They don’t do much for that..oh never mind. I’m an owner. Sucks to be you.” -Jim Irsay

  19. Maybe we can hire him here in foxboro to deflate some balls and video tape practices so we can win more Super Bowls!

Here’s how many super bowls we have won since spygate: 1.

  20. This kid is really struggling. Think about yourself when you were 20-23, were you mature enough to deal with this level of addiction? I don’t know whether he will beat this, but right now, he most certainly can’t.

  21. I say any owner Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones next time they are photographed hammered should be made to sell their teams? Stupid idea right?

So is this idiotic NFL policy.

Hope nothing comes out of Deflategate so the owners kick idiot Goodell to the curb

The Browns fired Belichick. Nice move!

    ————————————————-

Those were Modell’s Browns, who took them to Baltimore and are now called the Ravens.

  23. Every NFL player should fly to Washington or Colorado this summer and light up, what would Roger do?

  24. Farmer, your actions mean something, your words do not. Release him. Because the fact that you`re not releasing him speaks volumes.

  25. Just for those people who are saying it’s just beer in the off season what’s the problem, he got caught for a DUI/DWI and he’s been busted numerous times for alcohol and pot (which I don’t think should be illegal but I digress.) Those violations mean he has to stay clean. If this were his first offense we’d crack jokes but nobody would really care that much, but it’s not. Browns need to release him because he’s not worth the risk.

  26. I typically feel sorry for people with substance abuse issues, but this guy has repeatedly shot himself in the foot despite multiple chances. It’s his life to lead. I just don’t want to hear him troll for pity in 5 years.

    ********************

Wait, the NFL is ruining his life??? Really??

The NFL was willing to pay this kid millions of dollars to….catch….a….ball. Sure, they have some rules they’d like their employees to adhere to since it’s such a high-profile business. The vast majority of logical thinking sane people don’t see this as too much to ask.

There is someone ruining his life – his name is Josh Gordon.

  28. I can understand people being frustrated that Gordon would put himself in this position again but c’mon NFL! The kid is 23 and he’s getting kicked out for another year for drinking?? I’m sorry that just seems wrong to me.

If it’s illegal substances that’s one thing. If it’s PEDs it’s another… But to force a 23-yr old to stay away from alcohol in the offseason is absurd. I know folks will come back with “it’s his own fault; he’s had so many chances”… If he has a substance abuse problem the answer isn’t another penalty. It’s about getting him help. Or maybe he’s just a kid in his early 20s who likes to dabble with the green and a little booze. What would you say if your employer told you you couldn’t even socially drink on the weekends? Most Americans would flip. It truly is the No Fun League.

  29. the browns don’t have to do anything with gordon for at least a year because he’s still under contract until end of next season and own his rights in 2016. at this point, he’s trade bait for a team who’s willing to take on a reclamation project. easily the best wr and game changer in the league when he’s on. but rarely is he. such a shame, just imagine if he had a decent qb to toss him the ball as well as if he gave 10% more effort to some structure.

  30. This begs the question:

    Who’s money, who’s hurting
That’s what I want to know.
That’s why I listen to the Sports Junkies show.
Lurch Papa is married to Theresa.
    EB? He’s married to Deanna.
Johnny Cakes? Yeah, he’s to Amy.
And I don’t know anything about JP.
Because JP thinks that he’s an attorney.
And he also thinks he’s chasing Rocky.
But everybody knows he’s just a big, stupid donkey.
    Donk da donk donk donk,
John Paul Flaim is a big stupid donk.

That was a easy question to answer.

  32. No athlete should EVER be suspended for smoking pot…..if that’s the offense. The plant can’t possibly give someone an advantage anymore than aspirin can.

  33. What a friggin organization, somebody, somewhere has a voodoo doll with a Browns jersey.

  34. How about leave him alone , who doesn’t smoke weed? This is why all this is happening! Yea its against the rules. But lets get serious!!! #FREEGORDON #BROWNSSUCKANYWAY #IWOULDRETIRE

  35. Hey Josh, can you get me a good deal on a car? Massive talent and no common sense. Good riddance. This is why you draft and invest on character.

Josh knows the score. “Look Josh, here’s enough money so you and your kids will never have to work again. All you have to do is don’t drink and don’t take anything that isn’t prescribed. How hard can that be?”

    Apparently too damn hard!

  37. Maybe he and Johnny football can help one another get their lives in order. The Cleveland Browns have to be thrilled with these two guys right now.

  38. hahaha “turn his life around.”

Are you guys serious? Do you not see the hypocrisy here? I know you do, but you’re too busy shilling for woman-beating apologists.

Josh Gordon had a few drinks. Nope, not the kind laced with codeine. Not the kind laced with MDMA or LSD. The kind the NFL endorses. The kind they went and told 120 million people last Sunday to drink.

You know who else was probably watching that game, being told to crack open a fresh one?

    Josh Gordon.

  39. New England should have found a way to help Josh Gordon cheat on that breathalyzer test cause we know that the Patriots cheat on everything else. OH MY!

  40. The Browns fired Belichick. Nice move!

The Browns did not fire him……they moved to Baltimore and Art Modell did not keep him to coach the Ravens….but don’t let the facts get in the way of your ignorance.

  41. Browns have no reason to release him, whats done is done. He is officially out of the NFL unless he fixes his life & gets reinstated. Otherwise, they never pay him another dime & never comment on him again. I was a free Josh Gordon supporter last year, however, I’m sick of buying his excuses. Know the rules of the program your in, so not to get suspended again! Josh let down Cleveland, the team, fans, family & himself……..again! I was so close to buying his jersey a year ago & now can’t say if I will ever see him play again?

  42. tomorrows headlines will be that he and his 7th grade qb , johnny are at the same 6 month hotel.

  43. “Every NFL player should fly to Washington or Colorado this summer and light up, what would Roger do?”
    ——————————————————

Roger would do exactly what the collectively bargained agreement agreed to by the players says to do…..suspend every one of them. Just like any company would fire an employee that violated their drug policy in Washington & Colorado. Understand the law before you shoot off your mouth……private industry can ban whatever substance they want. There are companies that ban (and test) their employees for smoking cigarettes……and, guess what, it’s held up in court.

  44. Stop with the “he’s a kid” crap. He works for employer who pays him enormous amount of $ to work. And expects him to live up to conditions of a employment contract he signed. He did not. They offered assistance. He’s not a kid, he’s a stupid man. Stoooopid

  45. It amazes that most you agree with suspending someone a year for drinking alcohol. I don’t know, the penalties are all over the place IMO. Intentional stomp someone during a game on national TV = a fine no suspension. Smoke a little weed and drink a few beers off the field=indefinite suspension. The DUI he should of been suspended for, anything else? Meh. I don’t look to the NFL to be my moral compass and don’t really care what someone does with their personal time as long as they’re not hurting anyone. I know, I’m crazy.

  46. IN MUCH MORE IMPORTANT NEWS AMERICA’S TEAM’S VICTORY PARADE IS TOMORROW IN BOSTON.

ALL PATRIOT-IC AMERICANS NEED TO WATCH AND ADMIRE THE SHINY LOMBARDI TROPHY THAT THE PATRIOTS JUST WON. WE ALL SALUTE THE PATRIOTS AND CELEBRATE THEIR ONGOING SUCCESS.

  47. He and Johnny Football can go and own a sports bar somewhere together.

    Like Sam Malone on Cheers.

  48. Uhhh! Didn’t Jim Irsay from Indy do the exact same thing? And wasn’t he too a multiplem serial offender? Did Goodell kick him out indefinitely? Was all of this selective venom hurled at Irsay? Just saying? Because I’m 100% positive there are a lot of hooch drinkers, snorters and weed smokers making the loudest noise on this one.

  49. Dude knows the field he is supposedly trying to be a professional in and it’s regulations. If he has a legitimate disability in understanding that prevents him from following the simplest of rules and requiremnts to make a 7-8 figure income then I think we should all be more concerned about that. Not because the laws or the league are wrong but because this poor dude is a member of our society and seems to have an extreme inability to follow the simplest of rules even when given a great reward to do so.

  50. Let’s hope the combine end an NFL year that had too much of a TMZ feel to it. We don’t need anymore Rice,AP,Manziel,Hardy,Gordon, bad refs,Deflategate, or Goodell hyperbole about change.

  51. ok cleveland, here is the recipe for you to start winning. have haslam sell the team to a real owner, then fire that high school defensive coordinator you call a coach, then cut bait on the two bums who think they are entitled to something (gordon and manziel). you see, your owner, gm, and coach preach accountability to the good players on your team, yet still put up with the garbage from these two punks. set a standard and cut both, because what i watched from manziel on and off the field equals ryan leaf north. just start over from the begining.

    ******
Well – the Browns DID fire him. You see, unlike most other franchise moves, Cleveland was able to keep the Browns history. They moved to Baltimore with a clean slate. The Cleveland Browns just have a gap in their history. And Bill Belichick is in there – pre-gap.

  53. Browns actually played better without him anyways! The losing streak came when he returned to the team.

    Its called “Conditions of Employment”

He knew it and he blew it……more than once

I know plenty of people that have lost their job because of a DUI or a “hot” drug test.

He was an employee who did not care about his job, his teammates, his employer or himself

Decisions have consequences….some good and some bad…..he chose poorly

  55. That is the stupidest thing I’ve read in a long long time. He didn’t do anything illegal, the league messed this one up big time. They really need to change things or they’re gonna lose viewers. No one cares that he had a drink, especially after the season was over. And anyone who does care needs to get a life. They’re gonna ruin this young man. This punishment is way too extreme and shouldn’t be allowed!!!

  56. Where are all the fantasy trolls, screaming “Free Josh Gordon!”?? Did they run out of self-righteous altruism? Or do they just no longer have him on their team?

This sounds like the same deal Aldon Smith is going through, where football itself may be one of the key triggers for his problem.

  57. I have no idea why the league is so heavy handed when it comes to marijuana. I have three teenagers. They are all good kids. They grow up in a community where pot and drinking under age are stuff they have to manage. They are doing pretty well, they are all handling it differently. None are destined for the NFL, but I do watch with a bit of confusion at what they are doing.
At the top we have states legalizing it. Others decriminalizing it. Others having a “medical backdoor”, and certainly where I live, a public policy of not prosecuting recreational possession offences.

My own sense is that a player who smokes a bit is no different from a football sense than one who drinks a bit. It is not like say a trucking outfit or a machinist where booze and pot use is a safety hazard.

Policy: man beats wife and gets paid suspension until courts decide if he broke a law.
Policy: man smokes a joint and NFL gives him an unpaid suspension.

  58. If and when the NFL stops selling advertising to beer companies, I might take them seriously.

  59. Reading the comments is actually kind of sad. Have any of you bothered to actually look into what his transgressions were? Not nearly enough to justify the level of punishment. Dude is getting hammered on minutia and technicalities. I’m a Steeler fan so, I revel in the Browns misery as much as anyone but, this is ridiculous.

  60. Wow, they’re acting pretty quick here. Thats unusual for the league. Go NFL. Poor dude, thats harsh for booze.

Well, part of my job requires driving on the clock to take care of company business, and considering part of my compensation package is a company vehicle that I get use both for business and personal use, I would be fired with no questions asked if I got a DUI.

Ans yeah I smoked tons of pot when I was 23 in college, and for the record I think it should be legal. I even dabbled a bit with it for the first few years out of college, but then I got the job I have now, if i got into a car accident they would drug test me, and hence the driving often for work thing I mentioned that is not exactly out of the realm of of possibility.

So yeah man, I enjoyed smoking pot and if it were legal I’d prob partake on occasion, and I also like drinking beer. But I also recognize how lucky I am at 33 years old to hold a good paying job with a big company that has allowed me to live a very comfortable life and save for my future, so I stay off the cheeba and take a cab home.

Josh Gordon was presented with the opportunity to make more money in his 20’s then I will my entire life, as well as the ability a lifestyle that I can only dream of. I don;t think it’s too much to ask that he stays off the sauce and the bong especially considering that he has been popped before.

sorry josh, you made you bed.

  62. This is pretty stupid. He’s a grown man having a drink in the offseason. He wasn’t drinking and driving. He didn’t get drunk and get arrested. He had a drink on his own time, and now his career might be over? How many games did Ray Ray miss when he plead to obstruction of justice in a murder case? How many games did the league INITIALLY give Rice for laying out his fiance in the elevator?

  63. The guy isn’t an addict or a bad guy. He just has the absolute worst luck I’ve ever seen anyone have. Keep in mind his DUI came from a routine traffic stop for speeding. IE if he was a better driver this wouldn’t be an issue.

I guess what I’m trying to say is somewhere Jim Irsay and Johnny Manziel are calling him a lightweight before drunkingly falling off their piles of money.

  64. Worst run of the major sports leagues by a mile. Im not one of those idiots that worries about laws drawn up in the 30 or 40s to persecute brown people while sucking down mass produced poison courtesy of Bud and Coors.

I hope some day these unions stand up for themselves. 70% of football related income. Guaranteed contracts, no testing for marijuana. And abolish the salary cap. Theres no cap on ownership’s profit.
