Kraft remains unpersuaded that Brady needed deflated footballs

AP

Apart from Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s anger over the clumsy, fire-aim-ready approach the league office has taken to #DeflateGate, Kraft has strong feelings about whether cheating occurred.

“I think Tom Brady is healthy and vibrant, I don’t think there’s any relevance to that comment,” Kraft told Charlie Rose of CBS This Morning on Friday regarding the question of whether footballs deliberately were deflated.

“[W]e won our championship game [over the Colts] 45-7 and we won the Super Bowl 28-24, and the league pretty much had full charge of the footballs,” Kraft said.  “So they’re looking into it, and I’m very comfortable with the people and organization that we have.”

While most have formulated opinions about the situation weeks before the facts are revealed by the league, Kraft is in slightly better position than the rest of us to formulate an opinion, because he has the ability to investigate the situation on his own.  And Kraft has concluded that nothing happened.

Which reinforces the overriding message to Roger Goodell and company:  Show up with hard proof, or leave us alone.

  1. OR…he is spinning the narrative before the facts come out to minimize the tarnish on this most recent Lombardi.

Too bad Pat’s fans can’t have one without the asterisk.

  2. CHEATERS! I can wait to look below and drink all the delicious tears the from crying Patriots fans! Cheaters tears are the best tears……get your fill Americans, there’s a surplus!

  3. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Kraft is making way too much of a big deal over this. Obviously trying to cover something up.

  4. Patriots fans are the only ones that don’t think the Patriots cheat. Whether it’s deflated footballs, spying on the opponent, or stretching the rules until they break, this team will always be tainted. Goodell doesn’t have what it takes to do anything about it either. Champions****

  5. Patriots haters love being wrong.

Can’t win a playoff game after Spygate — fail
Can’t win an AFC championship after Spygate — fail
Can’t win a Super Bowl after Spygate — fail
Oh, uh, will have tons of fumbles in Super Bowl and Brady won’t throw a TD with properly inflated balls — fail

Yeah, I’m sure Kraft is bluffing or something. Bet the house on it! Like the Washington Generals, maybe you’re due!

  6. He is not making a big deal over it, the media keeps asking about it. He can refuse to answer, but I’m sure that tactic, while praised by fans of Lynch, would get him further derision from both fans and the media.

  7. It’s not a matter of whether Brady needed deflated footballs. They could have beaten the Colts handily without cheating but… they did use underinflated footballs to gain an edge, a clear example of cheating.

Richard Nixon didn’t need to steal campaign secrets about the opposition to win the election but… he did.

  8. Nfl tried to run a sting and failed. He has every right to be pissed. Its the media asking him, so get pissed at them. Funny that the only ball with significant deflation was the one the colts had. Gonna be funny when the colts are investigated

  9. So funny … love all those **** yep FOUR Superbowl wins. I can deal with that MUCH better than the tears associated with losing. Deal with it haters…. nuck, nuck nuck.

  10. You Pats fans just won the SB. Please stop crying. That goes for you too, Kraft!

The situation is what it is. The past is always going to come up and anything else that seems questionable now and in the future with regard to their ways of conducting themselves will always be under a microscope. There’s no doubt they’re a great team and deserve the accolades they receive but they’re also going to have to deal with these types of things for a long time with regard to their legacy despite if other teams are doing the exact same things.

  11. With statements like that it’s hard to understand how Pats fans don’t understand why we dislike you so much. I’ve never seen such arrogance in fans.

  12. So, Brady throw two picks and was the MVP? Yet coaching won that game for the Patriots. The short passing game that the “Legion of Boom” had no answer for (injured though they were). And then the decision that will be 2nd guessed forever-that was the difference in the game. Pats also keying well on Lynch and keeping him in check. Pats fans think its some conspiracy that they keep getting accused, then caught cheating. Everyone else shakes their head–tuck rule anyone?

  13. So Montana deflated footballs, Rice used illegal stickup in order to make catches he normally wouldn’t be able to, the 49ers repeatedly violated the salary cap, turned off headset communication for the other team and the Patriots are cheaters????

  14. Kraft, the Patriot players and fans are making too big of a deal out of this !!!! ???? No. We’re continuing along the path that was started by others because it’s pretty clear where it’s going to end….with Indianapolis’s equipment people taking air out of that football as part of their sting operation gone wrong. At this point, there’s actually more evidence for that than there is the Patriots doing it and they should be punished. They should be fined a million as an organization, their first round draft pick should be taken away and the owner and head coach should both be suspended for year. The equipment staff should be banned for life. The long history of Colts cheating needs to be exposed for what it is and dealt with.
As part of opening night next year, they should run the package where Goodell apologizes to Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in person. This whole thing was made up by the Colts and the Ravens and the more it looks like that the less the Patriot haters want to talk about it. Isn’t over until the NFL spells it all out for people.

  15. The fact that the Patriots would have won those football games no matter how the balls were inflated has absolutely nothing to do with this. I they deflated the balls after the official checked them before the game, then they cheated and they will face discipline from the league.

  16. The NFL investigation has been cackhanded so far, so it’s only right that Robert Kraft should demand that they put up or shut up. The number of leaks is inexcusable.

  17. While I believe Brady used underinflated balls, I don’t think he did it to gain a competitive advantage; rather, it was just a personal preference.

Further, it’s a stupid rule that shouldn’t even be on the books.

That having been said, I am getting sick of people like Kraft and Brady’s father demanding the NFL (and, I’m assuming some members of the media) apologize for slandering Brady and the Pats.

To me, it just smacks of gloating. Just shut up and enjoy the victory. Nobody is going to take it away from you.

  18. This is so overblown. In this age of social media and 24/7 sensationalism media scrutiny, even the merest hint that something might be amiss convicts the Patriots in many haters’ minds. I guarantee that the dominant teams of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s had things going on that weren’t entirely squeaky clean. Yet nobody wants to put asterisks next to those trophies.

  19. One minor rules violation in 15 years, 8 years ago, and some of you will never get over it.

It must be sad to not be able to appreciate greatness. You’ll probably never see it again.

  20. If all of these Pats fans stating that they don’t care about the cheating scandals really didn’t care then there wouldn’t be posts having to say it so much!!! Every post shows it’s getting to you regardless of what you say!! ****

That’s right. And if the evidence can’t be produced that they did, they should be exonerated by the NFL and there should be plenty of apologies for jumping the gun from the league , the media and the various other”celebrities” that jumped on the Hate the Pats bandwagon.

OR…he is spinning the narrative before the facts come out to minimize the tarnish on this most recent Lombardi.

Too bad Pat’s fans can’t have one without the asterisk.

The only asterisk is in the minds of all the haters. Look all you want in any publication and you will not find any asterisks by any of the championships.

  23. If Kraft and the whiny Pats fans were so confident they were innocent there wouldn’t be a need to be so defensive. The perception of guilt is amplified by your immature rants about innocence. Innocent people usually let the proof do the talking. Sssshhhh……if you are innocent its tainting your impressive win and record!

  24. Lets see Redskins/Cowboys don’t break ANY rules, get slapped with major penalties
. Patriots may or may not have skirted the rules just a bit, will get off Scott free. Makes no good since. But hey its the NFL. Why would it?

  25. So if the league finds that the Patriots were guilty of tampering with footballs, I expect swift and harsh punishment.
But if the league has no evidence of deliberate wrong doing, then I will also accept these findings and congratulate the Patriots on their super bowl run and move on.

Now, how many that have already judged the case without any facts will do the same? My guess is a very low percentage.

More importantly, if you are one of those that will not accept the league’s findings since it conflicts with your own pre-judgements, then why would you even continue to follow the NFL since you would be supporting an institution that in your mind covers up a scandal.

  26. The Pats barely beat the Jets twice this season. What if the balls were underinflated and that caused one fumble less or one more big pass completion that won the game for the Pats. So then the Pats would have had one more loss for the season. That would have knocked them down to the #3 seed in the AFC. It would have greatly changed the payoff picture.

  27. rjpats

    HONESTLY!

you have this team that has done it the right way for 15 years. Team work. Preparation. Intelligence. Dedication.
People can’t even appreciate it! It is sad!

All because of one impactless rules violation 8 years ago. 15 years. One violation. Recording from wrong location in stadium. Big deal.

In the day of social media there is always going to be a small vocal minority of idiots that just don’t get it. Appreciate greatness people. it does not come around often!

  28. Score vs Colts first half with the supposedly deflated balls, 14-7

Score vs Colts second half with balls adjusted by refs, 28-0

On top of which the only ball which was more than “a tick or two” under minimum pressure was the one the Colts had on their sideline for 20+ minutes before turning in and clearly tampered with.

This was a setup plain and simple. Harbaugh, Irsay, Pegano and former Jets employees. Can’t wait to see which draft pick the Colts have stripped and given to the Pats.

  29. We Patriot fans might have a little too much bravado- but you should stop and think – can you imagine how obnoxious the “12s” would be right now!Thank us-don’t hate us.

  30. And as to the claim that the balls were under inflated and reduced fumbling.

Belichick is the only coach in the league that immediately benches players who fumble. They emphasize ball protection continually during practice.

Its excellent coaching and fear of being benched that reduced fumbles.

    …………
Let me try another narrative for you.
Brady was MVP because he threw for 320+ yds and FOUR TDs. The ‘dumb’ decision was preceded by the dumbest catch in the history of the NFL that should have never happened.
As for getting accused and then caught cheating, name OME instance outside of spygate they were accused of cheating and proven so???? Just one, shouldn’t be hard right?
And what does your tuck rule comment even mean? Was it a rule? Yes Was it called properly? Yes. Was it a dumb rule, yes.

  32. I think we all are un persuaded after the super bowl when he had a field day with totally inflated footballs, how could deflated footballs help more than what we saw.?

  33. Or as Boomer Esieson says… Look into the colts as well as John harbaugh. It’s no coincidence that the only ball under pressure was the one they had in their possession. If the pats wanted to cheat, they wouldn’t deflate 2 damn ball. Boomer has been around and don’t be surprised if he’s right in this one

  34. Just kiss the rings belonging to:
    – The Greatest Coach of all time.
    – The Greatest QB of all time.
    – The Greatest Owner of all time.

You too, Roger. Just kiss the rings.

  35. As a Patriots fan if proven the Colts had something to do with the deflated football, please don’t take away their #1 pick. Ryan Grigson has proven to be the worst GM in the NFL as it doesn’t take a genius to draft Andrew Luck but with his other two first round picks were spent on Bjorn Werner and Trent Richardson.

    Need I say more?

  36. Brady might not have needed deflated footballs when throwing, but it sure helped his running backs and receivers in not fumbling. Just look at the numbers before 2006 (when Brady, et.al. got the rule changed) and after 2006 when the Pats “prepared” their own footballs. Or look at players fumble rates before and after they left Boston.

  37. Patriots haters. Stop it, you sound silly.
I am sorry that the the team you follows has been a disappointment to you. But jealousy is not very becoming.

The bottom line is the Patriots, Kraft, Belichick and Brady have been a dynasty for the past 15 years. The greatest organization in history of the NFL.

    Deal with it.

  38. “Which reinforces the overriding message to Roger Goodell and company: Show up with hard proof, or leave us alone.”
    ________________________________

This whole fiasco in a nutshell.

  39. For the other 31 teams, anything they do (like trying to maim, or permanently injured someone, I.e. ACL, is not as serious as a deflated ball), is not considered cheating unless it is from the Patriots.

  40. The real deal:
NFL office known for their integrity launched a failed sting operation based on……

Cheaters Pagano and Irsay filing a false report of one underinflated ball that was doctored by the Colts.

Criminal Deqwell Jackson saying the ball was underinflated.

Stupid Harbaugh for not knowing the rules and colluding with Pagano to invent some stupid story.

Butt hurt all of them cuz they got spanked and concocted this whole mess to try and derail a train called the New England Patriots.

    Sorry for your loss.

  41. I wonder who that Pats will pick with the Colts spot in the first round?

Who am I kidding? BB will trade it back to the Colts for two seconds and a fourth.

  42. The only thing that was deflated was the Patriot haters after the Immaculate Interception.

Gawd that must have stung. I bet you must still be seething. Let your anger marinate. Let it soak right in. Let it consume every bone. Now get angry! Let that rage come right out. Your hands are shaking right now as the fury makes its way through you just thinking about how we fans of the World Champions can and will be running our mouths right up in your grill and there is not a THING you can say to stop us.

How does it feel. Share your pain. Tell us how much it hurt.

    AAAAAAAAAAWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  43. And Kraft has concluded that nothing happened.
    =============================
What would you expect him to conclude? That he has a team of cheaters? Of course he going to say ‘nothing happened’ lol

Or look at players fumble rates before and after they left Boston.

If you are a New England Patriot, and you fumble the ball. You will be a bench warmer. BB does not tolerate fumbles. They work on it all the time.

  45. Gotta love Rex Ryan btw. He went all in for deflategate and talked nonsense in Arizona. He has never touched spygate. He is too smart. That would be a punch at his brother. He doesn’t do friendly fire. He would never smear his brother’s greatest accomplishments as a coach. Family.

  46. Tommy Uggs had the balls deflated to his liking, give him and the organization it’s fine and let’s move on already. Colts footballs were perfectly fine, Pats footballs didn’t magically change. Thumbs down Pats fans isn’t going to change the history of your organization.

  47. Its not just the QB; the receivers and running backs benefit too. Anyone heard of ben jarvis green ellis? Miraculously never had a fumble in foxboro and then couldn’t hold on to the ball in Cincy. weird huh?

Kraft owes the league and fans an apology for having the sleaziest / cheating team in the modern era of sports.

  48. Undisputed Fact in Evidence: Brady beat the Colts bad in the second half and Seattle (the best defense in the history of the NFL we were told before the game) in the Super Bowl with the NFL in complete control of the balls. Brady was the MVP of both games.

The haters and losers are left with the absurd proposition that the Patriots still “intended” to cheat. It is a pathetically weak (and gutless) argument by teams (and their fans) that can’t beat the Patriots on the field .

  49. Haters, you put your money (the absurd deflategate charge) on the table, took your hand off it, and placed your bet. Brady, Belichick, Kraft, and the Patriots saw your bet and won and more people watched it than any show in the history of television. You lost. Go home and take your asterisks with you.

  50. The Patriots will be vindicated.. The Colts will be under the Gun because they will need to explain why the only ball in their possession, D’Quell Jackson’s Interceptions, was 2 PSI under. Jackson has stated he did not see any issues with the ball. The Colts staff took it and he has not seen the ball since.. Hmm. It’s plausible to think that with a recklessness criminal owner, who was caught driving under the influence with 29K in cash, could have instructed his staff to deflate the ball in question (2psi under). Funny, why didn’t they stop the game and check the balls seeing they were concerned about deflated balls as it has been reported going into the game!! It’s plausible to think that a GM who suspends his running back for two consecutive playoff games, which allows the contract to be voided in 2015 due to a clause in the contract. This cheating maneuver would save the Colts 3M in cap space and clean up an embarrassing trade. It’s plausible to think an organization with five PED suspensions over the past 2 years encourages a culture of cheating.. Hell, lets not even talk about ditching the season so the cheating ass organization could draft Andrew Luck.. The heat will be turned on the Colts and the rest of you losers will have to deal with your Knee jerk reactions. Some of you will require surgery because you jerked your knee’s so hard that going under the knife is required to repair your MCL/ACL tear..

  51. This is exactly why so many real football fans are outraged over this whole thing. They never had to cheat yet they have been caught, twice. It’s the arrogance and lack of respect for the game that ticks the majority of us off. And of course if it doesn’t tick you off, you have about as little integrity as they do.

  52. Kraft and Belichick took a bullet for the NFL last time – allowing Goodell to feign shock and horror that signal taping occurs when his OWN RULES describe how it should be done.

A lot of the fans here bought Goodell’s act hook line and sinker – and don’t seem to question why Coordinators (even today) cover their mouths.

Belichick couldn’t help but remind people that signal calling takes place in front of 80,000 people and a few dozen cameras when the question was raised prior to the Super Bowl – so we got a glimpse of him getting tired at these charades.

But if the NFL wants to make New England a scapegoat for what others are doing yet again – while fans turn a blind eye to WRs using Stickum, Teams piping in Crowd Noise and Jets coaches lining up to trip players, don’t expect Bob Kraft to cooperate with Roger this time.

  53. Anyone who is running their mouths about Pete Carroll and “the call” clearly knows nothing about the sport and isn’t fit to be discussing it with any basis of authority.

Carroll made a great call, he just got beat by a great heads up defensive play by Butler assisted by Browner who eliminated the pick. And that happened because the greatest coach in the history of all sports pays attention to little details that helped the play to be recognized and stomped out.

  54. You haters are basing everything on a bogus report put out by Chris Mortenson. It has been proven what he reported was wrong. So you jealous, self righteous haters keep convincing your own little minds with these delusional thoughts that they cheated and they are the only team that bends the rules. Me, I have to recover from going to YET another parade in Boston. Hate us because you ain’t us. See you same time next year.

  55. Now that Jerry Rice has admitted to illegally using stick-um, and given his central role in the 49’er offense, it looks like we need to put an asterisk on their Super Bowl wins. Stick-um is more of an advantage than a slightly deflated football (assuming for they did anything wrong on purpose).

  56. Chris Mortenson and Bob Kravits both got their information from the Colts Organization who orchestrated this witch hunt. When the real info dripped out from the NFL they were exposed. This entire thing may flip over on the Colts who are now suspected of deflating the D. Jackson ball. Again, the only ball deflated 2 PSI was the one in the Colts possession. It’s going to be fun discrediting all you self Righteous frauds.. If you go to the Colts fan board and view the comments you see the sweat building up!!

  57. For all you jokers that say BB is the greatest coach of all time, why did he do such a terrible job in Cleveland? Nobody was calling him a genius when he left Cleveland!

  58. 11-5 in Cleveland in 94 with a playoff win.

Best season record for Cleveland in the last 28 years.

    Notion of failure – rejected.

  59. I find it hilarious that it’s always the same chucklers on here taking shots at the pats. They must search this site all day just looking for a Patriots story to jump on like chumps. Seems to me like they’re time could be better spent rooting for they’re own team. Anyway, I truly enjoy it. If the pats weren’t so good we wouldn’t matter to all these punks. I literally skip through the stories just to read they’re garbage comments. It amuses me. Stock up on asterisks because we ain’t done winning yet!

  60. How sad it is it that Patriots* fans are linking these type of articles on fan sites to encourage their fellow bandwagoniers to thumb everything in their favor. It’s become beyond obvious when comparing the thumb activity of older Patriots* articles. What a smug fickle little fan base they must have.
