Monte Kiffin won’t remain with Cowboys

AP

The Cowboys moved Monte Kiffin out of the defensive coordinator job last year and they’re moving him out of the organization entirely this year.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports that Kiffin’s contract has expired and that he won’t be re-signed for a third year with the team.

Kiffin was the coordinator in 2013 when the Cowboys defense allowed the most yards in the league while losing three of their final four games to finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs. The team bumped Rod Marinelli up last year while Kiffin took on the title of assistant head coach and saw their defense perform much better despite dire preseason predictions for the unit.

Moore reports that the 75-year-old Kiffin would like to continue coaching. If he does, he’ll continue a career that dates back to 1966 and features stops at five college and seven pro teams.

  1. Stats only go so far. If you saw Aikman play, he is a HOF’er. I’m a Bills fan so I naturally have to detest everything Dallas but he deserved the honor.

  2. Serious question: is it just me or is Kiffin’s Tampa 2 the most overrated defensive scheme ever? Any scheme would look elite with Hall of Fame/eventual Hall of Fame talents like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice, John Lynch, Ronde Barber, etc. It’s always failed without absolutely elite personnel spread through all levels of the defense.

  3. I love how the Cowboys fans completely used “old Monte” as an excuse for the 2013 defense. Yet, he gets absolutely no credit for the turn around in 2014. Marinelli wouldn’t even be there if it wasn’t for him.

Kind of like Norv Turner’s offenses.

  5. I like Monte Kiffin; he was literally useless as a d.coordinator but I think it helped the locker room and overall flow of the defense with Marinelli running things and his old pal Kiffin essentially as a defensive consultant.

But then again I’m an internet commenter and these guys make millions of dollars to make these decisions so I guess they had their reasons.

How did Troy Aikman make it to the HOaf?

Only 20+ TD passes in a season once.

If you don’t like Aikman’s stats, then don’t look at Bradshaw’s.

  7. Check out Aikman’s postseason stats, that’s why he’s in the HOF – and he also 90 regular season games in the 90’s, which was a record that stood until Tom Brady came along

  8. I don’t know why they hired that guy to begin with.
Don’t get me wrong, good DC and all. They just didn’t have the personnel in Dallas to run his defense. He could probably catch on somewhere in an advisory type of role.

Uhhhhh, the 3 SB’s he won with the team may have something to do with it, Einstein. It isn’t TD passes that count, it is WINS, and Aikman knew how to win.

In those SB’s, Aikman had 5 TD’s, only one interception, 70% completion percentage, and a 111.9 QB rating. He was also SB MVP in 1993. Any questions?

So, stop hating and stop trolling. Aikman is very deserving to be in the HOF.

Getting back to the SUBJECT of this post, Kiffin is a great guy with a lot of football knowledge, but he won’t be all too difficult to replace. Great guy, great coach, has a SB ring to his credit with Tampa, but apparently it is time to move on from Dallas.

  10. Why is Troy Aikman in the HOF? A better question us why is somebody like you who clearly knows nothing about football or great football players even allowed to comment on stories about football.

  11. How did overrated mormon Steve Young ever make the HOF? 1 SB on a Dream Team full of pre-salary cap mercenaries. Steve Young lost tons of big games to better QBs like Aikman and 90’s Favre.

  12. if you are judging Kiffin based on his tenure with the cowboys or how the Tampa 2 has matched up against today’s offenses, then you aren’t being fair to him. Pete Carroll counts Monte Kiffin as a mentor and after losing Dan Quinn and Ken Norton jr this year, maybe Kiffin would sign on to strengthen that staff

  13. How did overrated Joe Montana make the Hall? Sure he won four Super Bowls, but with that supporting cast he should have won seven or eight. And Walter Payton? Only one ring. Sure, he had all those records, but the guy played for like 20 seasons, of course he had all the records. Total compiler. And Jim Brown? Don’t even get me started — NEVER won a Super Bowl. And that hack Nagurski? Man….
