Steelers, Vikings will meet in Hall of Fame Game

AP

The Steelers and Vikings will kick off the 2015 preseason in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced today that the annual Hall of Fame Game will feature Pittsburgh and Minnesota on Sunday, August 9. The NFL typically puts teams in the Hall of Fame Game that have players entering the Hall of Fame that weekend, and that’s the case again this year: Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis and former Vikings center Mick Tingelhoff will be inducted.

The game will be played at Canton’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, named for the Saints owner who has donated millions to the Hall of Fame (and whose millions are now the subject of a nasty court battle between his current wife and his daughter and grandchildren from a previous wife).

Playing in the Hall of Fame Game means the Steelers and Vikings will each get five preseason games. The rest of the preseason schedule will be released in the spring.

  1. Yeah buddy!
we get to report to Mankato a week earlier and get 5 preseason games! Skol Vikings let go year 2!

You’ll hear us yell for more!
    V-I-K-I-N-G-S!
    Skol Vikings lets go!

    Teddy! Teddy! Teddy!

  2. Vikings fans must be devastated! As perennial off-season champions, this means their hopes and dreams will be crushed, and they will be eliminated from playoff contention one week earlier this year!

I think that’s a very nice way to honor the annual off-season champion Minnesota Vikings.

And, what’s the deal with your constant posting on Packer stories? Do you have your computer set up to let you know the second a new story is posted? Weird man, really, really weird.

  4. What’s next Hines Ward and Troy P in the HOF? Lets just throw all of favorite obnoxious steelers in.

  5. Congratulations to Ron Wolf, the fifth Packer who started his career after 1960 to make the Hall of Fame. The Vikings have 13 in that time. I guess that’s why the Packers aren’t playing in this game.

  6. Well Viking fans, since you won’t be playing in the last game of the season … playing in the first game of the season will be a nice consolation prize for you.

Now cross your fingers .. maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get a Thanksgiving game as well – after all, you’ve already got those big drumsticks painted on the sides of your helmets …

  7. Cool the steelers get play in HOF game but it scares me a little playing 5 pre season games.. More chance for injury, but on the plus side I guess a little more work in and see what the younger guys have to offer.

  8. Starting this way the NFL season can only get better, get the trash out of the way early.

  9. So far only one good troll post. The rest of troll game is weak in this section. Disappointed in the Packer fans…trolls. Bring your A-game or stay in momma’s basement.

    This is quality trolling:

Wow 13 Vikes in the Hall of Fame? That’s impressive! How many Super Bowls did you win with all that talent?

  11. Keep trolling, Packer fans. This game should be decent since Roethlisberger should be good and Bridgewater should be good. The Vikings defense has taken a gigantic leap since Zimmer took over.

This should be a very watchable game.

  14. wow… whats all this Viking packers haters…

why can’t people just be nice with random acts of kindness…

read about Near Death Experiences and what people see minutes to hours …. and it aint football related…

Christmas just passed and Peace goodwill towards men…

Now that said.. Yeah.. Jerome and Steelers ! 5 pre-season… guess we’ll get a good look at Bell’s backup !

  15. Its a preseason game. Nobody really cares. Even the fans of the two teams playing won’t care after the starters are pulled halfway through the first quarter.

  16. Does this mean we get to hear “PFTpoet” and “6Rings” talk smack like this game is actually meaningful?

  17. This was paybacks to the Steelers for Corrupt Goodell letting Le’Veon Bell play all season. What a joke. He was only allowed to play because of Goodell and Rooneys being boys.

    ……yeah, that’s why…..(yawn.)

  19. I think the HOF game needs to switch to the same ‘high school gym class’ format as the Pro-Bowl, with hall of fame members acting as captains (accept for that cheater Rice), and each team comprised of players from both teams.

Tomlin could then act as “All time punt coverage player’, and try to trip returners for both teams as they shoot by,

And of course we’ll need those fruity lime green and orange uniforms.

Notice that the NFL IS sick of watching the Packers choke in big games so they want real teams to kick off the new year!

    ………………………………………………………………………………………….

I guess only in Minnesota is the Hall of Fame game considered a “big” game.

  21. This game might mark the return of disgraced Viking RB Adrian Peterson from his child beating suspension.

Viking fans have so much to be proud of.

  22. Like every year, it will not be the most attended NFL event of that weekend.

The Steelers 4th and 5th string against the Minnesota #2’s.

This is one way the owners can tell the viklings they had their one appearance in a nationally televised game.

There is no reason for Roethlisberger to even suit up. Nobody knows who will be “starting for the vikings. But it should be a real confidence boost for the Steeler draft picks early in training camp.

The Steelers fans will all be volunteers. They dont have to pay anyone to lead cheers for their team.

  23. This is a rematch of Super Bowl IX, in which the Steelers (obviously) won 16-6. This was in 1975 and was the last game played (besides the Pro Bowl 2 weeks later) before the Seahawks & Bucs joined the NFL in ’76.

  24. The Vikings need the extra game. The only way to keep the Packers from “owning” them is practice, practice, practice. Being “owned” must really wear the fans down. It must seem like it will never end. That’s why they lash out with ridiculous comparisons, as though we’re equals, or some such far out concept. Good luck with that….

That result should be vacated (it may have been already – I did not check) because the Steelers were at that point in the midst of their comprehensive and illegal steroid program. Despite that rampant cheating by Pittsburgh, the Vikings made a game of it, valiantly, and surely would have won on any sort of a level playing field.

I look forward to the Vikings extracting some measure of revenge here, and at the very least laying a good hit on Tomlin when he ventures onto the field during punt coverage.

  27. Call it national exposure, the Vikings get so little of it during the regular season so the NFL is throwing a bone to the Vikings by getting them on TV at least once in 2015, forgetting for the moment that it will in the middle of August during the height of people’s summer vacations.

Its actually an act of mercy, this spares the average NFL fan of having to witness Check Down Teddy and his turnstile Left tackle, a child abusing RB and a WR who might even run a semble of a route.

It’s also an honor knowing that our little sisters to the east have choked away another championship

Yet you were swept by them for the 5th straight season. Matter of fact the state of Minnesota just plain sucks at football. To explain just look at the the past 10 games for the gophers and queens vs. the Badgers and the Pack. The Wisconsin teams have a 19-1 record…ladies and gentlemen that is complete domination!

If it it wasn’t for the bridges collapsing they would have been jumping off in droves.

Even if that’s true, it’s only because the viking fans have had a longer off-season to hone their trolling skills, and annually begin serious trolling once their team is eliminated from playoff contention, which is usually early-to-mid October. They’re not very good at understanding things like football or championships, but they’re damn good at trolling! Must be all those long winters.

  30. I guess the NFL wants to honor the Vikings on the new stadium plans. Only the Vikings would not need to waste any money on a trophy cabinet!

The only way you can actually choke away a championship is by doing it in the Super Bowl. Otherwise, the Vikings have choked away a championship in every game of their existence.

    Record in Super Bowls:
    Green Bay is 4-1
    Vikings are 0-4

  32. Great another meaningless game for our players to get injured. Given the large number of HOFers for both teams, and Mick’s induction, this does make sense.

And give the Packers fans a break folks, let em troll — basically all they’ve got to hang their hats on, and justify their happiness, is football. Heck, half of the cheesers live here for the schools and the jobs. Ever wonder why they don’t hold Super Bowls in WI?

  33. Vikings will lose the opening preseason game in a big way on the big stage. Sure was nice of the NFL to invite the vikings. It will be the only time a Viking makes it to Canton

Yep you nailed it… wow wake up….Godell let the legal side of this run its course before he took action….If you would have been paying attention you would have seen that Bell is suspended for the first 2 games this season. And will be required to serve a 15-month probation, pay court costs and go without driving for 60 days.

  35. Look my little packer peasants, I know that the choking in the playoffs the past decade has been hard on you, can’t we acknowledge that a new year is upon us?

  40. Ariani1985 seems to always overlook the fact that the Packers won the super bowl in 2010, I dont think that was a decade of choking, now a team that loses the big game 4 times, thats the definition of choking.

Perhaps you’d like to take this outside, Buster, for a little Super Bowl era trivia? Not saying I’m a wizard, but I would crush ~98% of the twerps that make that stupid Seahawks bandwagon claim.

Full disclosure: I knew the Steelers/Vikes faced off in a SB, but I did have to Wiki which one so yeah, you kinda got me there.

You just drink your summer away with your farmer’s tan and sad drunk demeanor, reliving that glorious championship loss. Can’t tell which malady is the cause for the sour taste in your mouth.

Being a Packer fan you should understand the past, because most, if not all Packer fans live in it. What I am getting at is the Golden Gophers have 7 National Championships and the Badgers have exactly zero! Therefore, the Vikings/Gophers dominate the Packers/B adgers 7 to 4.

  47. Notice how all the GB fans/trolls are looking in the rear view mirror – constantly bringing up their 13 championships? Their glory days of old…….

Notice how the Vikings fans/trolls are looking to the future and the possibility of going deep in the playoffs and a return to the Super Bowl? (and not choking it away in the NFC championship game)!!

  48. Tom Benson generously gives millions for the preservation of the HOF and doesnt even get his team chosen to play in the game. This league has no shame.

  49. The Packers were going to play, but the field in Canton was not up to King Rogers liking…

  50. And Steelers are Marching early this year! Once they trounce the Vikes we should just cancel the season and award the Lombardi now to God’s Given Team, the Steelers. We all know you agree but are too jealous to admit it.
