Packers pass out a bunch of new titles during shakeup

AP

The Packers finalized their coaching staff today, with coach Mike McCarthy passing out a bunch of new titles to his offensive staff.

They named Tom Clements associate head coach/offense, Edgar Bennett offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt quarterbacks/wide receivers coach, Mike Solari assistant offensive line coach.

They also named Jerry Montgomery defensive front assistant, Ron Zook special teams coordinator and Jason Simmons assistant special teams coach.

McCarthy’s talking to the media soon, at which point he’ll get a chance to explain his moves, and how he’ll divide up the play-calling and other duties.

But going by titles, it certainly appears that Clements got a little boost, and Bennett’s being moved to a coordinator role (and presumably lacking play-calling authority) is also a sign.

Throwing an extra position group on Van Pelt’s a little curious, however.

  1. It’s called “the great choke shakeup”. Still can’t quit laughing about that Seattle game. Thanks packers!

  2. Unfortunately for the packer faithful, NONE of those titles included Defensive Coordinator, or, most importantly-HEAD COACH.

Unless you like choking defensively with 5 minutes to go AND kicking field goals on 4th and inches with the Super Bowl on the line with Rodgers as your qb, keep the status quo!!!!

  3. Even though my guys just won the SB, looking at next season, I won’t laugh at a team who has Aaron Rodgers as their qb. Top echelon, he’s absolutely elite.

Do you mean the Super Bowl call at the goal line? You are right, that was a huge choke by the Seahawks. Easy win.

  5. There must have been some disconnect from the QB coach to WR coach.

Same page, no excuses or finger pointing, anymore.
    Something happened, though…

  6. Oh brother – here we go – Packers fans crowing about winning “12 Championships” – totally unconcerned that half of those occurred before the invention of electricity, many were before the NFL was even formed, and the first few were simply popularity contests where the “award” was given out without a game even being played.

    Impressive…

Who will be coaching the medical staff for the teams constant choking?

    #zing!

Yup the Packers are the chokers when a certain Purple team has been around for 54 years and has a 0-4 Superbowl record…

Should Pete Carroll be fired then? Should Bellick have been fired for letting the Giants score in Superbowl XLVI?

  9. While I hate seeing anyone get fired I think getting rid of Slocum was a move that just had to happen. The fake FG for a TD in Seattle was just the final thing that led to Slocum being shown the door. I don’t know of how many for sure but I think they had something like 5 kicks blocked this year. He also messed so badly with Crosby a couple of years ago he almost had the guy out of the NFL.
The one move that is curious to me is Bennett getting the OC gig. I know he has been around that system for close to 20 years but time will tell.

  10. They should have given the title of “Unemployed” to both Capers and McCarthy for what happened in the last 4-5 minutes of the NFC Championship game.

  11. None of these changes bode well for the Minnesota Vikings.

Going forward, the Packers’ ownership of the bottom-feeding Vikings will rival that of Wisconsin’s ownership of the Minnesota Golden Gerbils.

Should Zimmerman be fired for the last minute of the Bills game?

  13. And they were all given a piece of paper that declared them all “Owners”.

Yes, they choked away a game that none of us have ever seen the likes of. But, they dominated that game for 55 minutes. They are completely panicking this off season. Things are only going to get worse from here.

Clown music was playing the whole time they handed out those titles.

You might be right. The wind was coming out of the West at that time.

  15. Edgar Bennett was a backup RB for the Packers back in the day. As receivers coach, he has consistently not been able to coach his players to be able to catch the ball effectively. This, and coupled with the fact that Dom Capers is STILL employed by the team, even though he hasn’t put a good defense on the field in 5 years, makes me just shake my head. This is not the shakeup that was needed, this was switching seats on the Titanic.

    _______

Absolutely! Now, who is this Zimmerman guy? Is that McCarthy’s nickname?

  17. Haters will hate trolls will troll but we still love our Pack as do Packer fans all over the world. Oh yes the loss to Seattle hurts like hell. Those little jabs about that loss don’t mean a thing, it’s just garbage posting. Kinda reminds me of the big Viking choke in the 2009 playoff against The Saints!!

  18. “Should Pete Carroll be fired then? Should Bellick have been fired for letting the Giants score in Superbowl XLVI?”

Should you make comparisons to unrelated situations as a means of proving your point? No you shouldn’t, because nobody is talking about Pete Carroll or Belichik.

The Packers have been consistently underwhelming for every year except for the Superbowl run. As soon as teams figured out how to contain Clay Matthews after his rookie year, they’ve consistently been terrible. Dom Capers needs to go, and you could replace McCarthy with any up and comer Adam Gase type and still do better. McCarthy has never really been anything to write home about but Dom Capers especially has never done anything special and has been running the same fail defense year in and year out. Ive watched every minute of Packers football for the last 20 years, this coaching staff needs to go.

  19. Good teams analyze the season and playoffs and make improvements.

A disappointing season for the Packers would still be the the high water mark of the vikings since Gerald Ford was President.

I don’t know how an embarrassing group like the viking who don’t even bump their heads when walking under Mike McCarthy’s urinal think they can throw insults at him.

Funny how a Packer fan/troll can’t tell the difference between a Championship game and a regular season game. Not to mention McCarthy has admitted not knowing Fabio was injured. That alone should get him canned!

  22. Its official, I’m jumping ship… I’m no longer a Packer fan.
The majority of these posts has convinced me of that… I don’t want to be part of a team that choked in the playoffs…
Lets see, who can my new team be?
    .
    Vikings? lol
    Bears? lol
    Cowboys? lol
    49ers? lol
    Seahawks? lol

(All these teams had a lead in a playoff game, and then watched the other team come back and win, so just about every team has choked before)
As much as I find humor in these posts, i can’t find a team with so much upside, that will compete for years.
Say what you want, and laugh at your own comments, but we all know GB will be back stronger than ever.

Is that why Matthews had more sacks in 2010, 2012, and 2014 than his rookie year? McCarthy has a record of 94-49-1 and 1 Superbowl Win. Ask yourself this question, is it the Players or the Coaches that are the issue? How come Dom’s defense looked a lot better once he finally had a fast ILB (Matthews) playing. The Packers also lost Jenkins after the Superbowl year and he was a huge loss to the D-Line. Not to mention losing Collins, Finley, and Jolly.

The Packers choke is epic in NFL history…

Should Zimmer be fired for having a dream that they would win the Superbowl and he couldn’t even get the team to the playoffs. Was Favre and the entire staff instantly fired/cut after the 2009 NFC Championship game? Yes there is a difference between a regular season game and a NFC Championship game, but it was more than McCarthy that lost that game. It was the entire team that fell apart.

  26. This gets me so excited that McMuffin is putting alot of people in front of him and the unemployment line. Lots of bodies to go through now to get to him.

But the Packers would never fire a coach under contract…they wouldn’t have any street free agent money if they did

There are a good many teams who need a lot more help with their choking issues. Take the pathetic Vikings, Cowboys, Lions and Browns for example. The Vikings are on a 50+ year run of mediocrity, and so are the Lions. The Browns last won a title in the mid 60’s. It is rumored the Vikings have a Heimlich technician on the staff.

A lead? In “a” playoff game. Dude. Seriously? Up 16-0 with 5 minutes to go to reach the Superbowl. Completely dominating the game for 55 straight minutes. You can brag all you want about your Superbowls. That’s cool. But make no mistake about it, the Packers had one of the all time epic chokes in the history of the game. Now own it!

  29. Edgar Bennett to OC is a move I like. Edgar has been moving up the ladder pretty fast on a good team that knows coaching. Look for Edgar to be mentioned for head coaching gigs in the next couple years. If you don’t believe he is good at coach guys up, look no further than what he has produced from the Packers wide outs. Simply amazing what he has been doing there.

Dom Capers wasn’t the issue last year. All you who still want to complain about him have no clue.

Yet The Packers give up 3 straight touchdown drives..Maybe Dom should have strolled down from his suite and told his position coaches that celebrating with 5 minutes left is not a smart thing…

  33. Yeah Yeah…..haters continue to talk about the greatest choke in playoff history, but none of the haters gave them a chance to win that game anyway. Especially in Seattle . At least now we know they can pull it off. Bring it in 2015. Pack in Super Bowl 50…..I can feel it !!

  34. You can’t compare the historic choke of Green Bay to Seattle’s loss in the SB. The Super Bowl could’ve gone to either team in the last minute, where as GB had that game won by a wide margin but crumbled under the pressure when it mattered most.
