Stickum situation continues to catch little attention

Getty Images

It’s been more than a week now since Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice publicly apologized for using stickum during his playing career.  He explained the violation of the rules by saying everyone did it.

The stunning admission generated an even more stunning lack of coverage and criticism (perhaps because Rice never played for the Patriots).  Since then, no receivers from the post-stickum era have supported Rice’s contention.  Two have strongly disputed it:  Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter and Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin.

Both have denied the notion that everyone used stickum passionately.  Carter insisted he only used God-given talent to catch footballs, and Irvin said, “Leave me alone with that mess.  Get off my Twitter with that.”

We’ve tried to get Rice and Carter on PFT Live to elaborate on the situation.  Rice hasn’t been available; Carter can’t do it because of his exclusive contract with ESPN.  We’re also looking for more comments from receivers who played in Rice’s era; if you’ve seen anything on Twitter or elsewhere regarding players admitting or denying using stickum, let us know.

It’s bizarre, to say the least, that folks who claim to be insulted by the alleged tampering with footballs by the Patriots aren’t bothered by other examples of cheating by players on other teams.  It’s understandable that the league isn’t making a bigger deal of it.  In lieu of exploring rabbit holes (and in turn exposing possibly widespread cheating to the world), the NFL seems to be far more content to wait for someone to be caught in the act and to hit them so hard that it scares other teams into not cheating in the specific way that someone has been caught in the act.

Meanwhile, cheating will continue in all sorts of other ways.  There’s too much riding on the outcome of NFL games to expect that everyone will play fair, especially when it’s easy to justify bending or breaking rules by pointing out that others are doing the same thing.

  1. The reason people don’t care about Rice is because he admitted to it, nobody would ever know had he not said. Also, people care about the Patriots because they are constantly circumventing the rules and act arrogant about it. In addition, the Pats have gotten away with cheating since 2001 and people are sick and tired of Goodell turning a blind eye to it. Make sense?

  2. Rice is the GOAT. Nobody wants the GOAT tarnished. It was not stickum that made him the GOAT. Rice is the GOAT with or without stickum.

  3. “It’s bizarre, to say the least, that folks who claim to be insulted by the alleged tampering with footballs by the Patriots aren’t bothered by other examples of cheating by players on other teams. ”

    ————————————————–

Nothing at all bizarre about it. It only proves the point that those offended are merely trying to rationalize that the Patriots couldn’t possibly be that much more successful than every other franchise over the long term.

    They can, and they are.

  4. For the last time the Patriots cheating has absolutely nothing to do with receivers in the 80’s and 90’s using stickem. In this instance the reason “people aren’t bothered by other examples of cheating by players on other teams” is because were talking about things that happened decades ago. It is not at all relevant to what’s happening today. Do you honestly expect people to still be angry about something Rice did in the 80’s? If you do I think that’s a pretty weird thing to think. The Patriots, however, have cheated very recently and been caught and that’s why people are outraged about it. Why is this so hard to understand?

  5. I may be wrong, but the one that comes to mind us the great Fred Biletnikoff of the Raiders. I think he is Much better than Jerry Rice.

  6. * for every rusty old 49er ring. This knocks all the old 49er glory down a ton, the way i see it…

An ex patriot would never be so looselipped so I’m sure Bill Belichick is smiling wickedly at the Rice foot mouth affliction

  7. “Perhaps it is because everyone knows that the legal gloves used now are better then the illegal stickum ever was.”

    …………………………………………………..

Yeah because we all remember all those times in recent history when footballs stuck to jerseys and pants like in the stickum day.

Keep telling yourself lies and someday you’ll believe them to.

  8. One friend of mine got a post andre rison game worn gloves after a game back in days and he commented that he has never seen a glove so sticky

  9. nobody cares, because it has nothing to do with the team that they are most jealous of, right now.

  10. Jerry Rice had a notable drop problem as a rookie. It suddenly went away when he started using stickum. Stickum is an adhesive that was specifically used by players to help them catch the ball (when it wasn’t illegal). It was banned by the NFL in 1981. Jerry Rice didn’t enter the NFL until 1985. Rice’s whole career is an asterisk-tainted lie.

  11. Every era of football there must have been some level of cheating. This isn’t new to this era of football we are currently in either. Was it not Hines Ward who once said on TV when he was a player, “If you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying.”

  12. @whitetrash69 – Spygate was not illegal in 2001. The Pats got caught in the first game it was illegal. I attribute Spygate to arrogance of BB at the time. There are no facts released on Deflategate, just rumors and innuendo. Harbaugh moaned about “deceit” with the Pats legal use of non-standard formations.

Ever think that when Spygate occurred, Kraft would have laid down NEVER AGAIN mandates and it is likely that the Pats are now the cleanest team in the league? They know the rule book and use it to the greatest extent possible to gain competitive advantage by outsmarting other teams.

I can’t wait to count the thumbs down on this one…

Other than “spygate” lets see the list that constantly circumvents rules.

  14. Funny how there’s always a justification for any player that’s cheated or broken laws before for players who don’t wear a Patriots uniform. Btw those gloves have since been made illegal(I’m sure you’ll come up with another cheap defense). And for the other hater Pats were fined and lost a 1st round pick, idk about you but to me that’s not turning a blind eye. And for the latest BS scandal, it’s exactly that and I can’t wait till the Wells investigation is over. So I can hear what all you haters are going to say then. And for the last guy Brady is now the GOAT why make him look bad and not stickum Rice? Who openly admitted to cheating to the world? Cmon people either wake up or stop hating. Bc the Pats are going to keep on winning baby!

  15. Look, you’ve tried your best to justify the Patriots pension for cheating and no one’s buying into to the “everyone does it” crap. Besides, this took place about 2 decades ago. Time to try another angle to wash away the sins of the patriots.

  16. And ruin the illusion that football before the Brady era was exclusively played by gods amongst men running in slow motion set to orchestra and dramatic voiceover? When the game was pure and so was America. oh what beautiful times there were when no one ever used stickum or drugs or played games while on drugs or played games after staying up all night doing drugs with prostitutes or stabbed their teammates with scissors.

    The good old days, right?

  17. It’s getting “little attention” because it’s so far in the past not. It means nothing to todays NFL.

If it happened this past season, that’s a different matter. It happened more than a decade ago though.

  18. Because it’s not an issue, Jerry Rice didn’t use gloves in 1986 and had a monster year, catching the ball is one small part of playing receiver.

  19. Haha I think Florio wrote this entire article just so he’d have an excuse to include that pun in the headline.

  20. Really surprised that no one is talking about the stickum residue that must of been all over the balls that Montana was throwing. I have a feeling that helped him. I believe that when Irving was asked about the stickum he said there was no way he would get anything on Aikmans footballs.

  21. People aren’t up in arms over something that happened 30 years ago. Yeah it was illegal, but Rice copped to it. Even I, someone who despises the 49ers, don’t really care. I feel like we’re just pulling “controversy” out of nothing now.

  22. I think it was after the ODB catch but someone on countdown asked about the gloves in this era.

Compared to the gloves in the 90s, Carter said something like:

-90s era gloves were just as sticky

Would be interesting to see a game where receivers couldn’t wear gloves

  23. The Patriots conspiracy theorists are like any other conspiracy theorist…they aren’t looking for objective information, they are looking for things that support their feelings and what they want to be true. It’s classic confirmation bias.

  24. The league wants superstars and highlight reel catches not boring old “rule followers”. That’s why things like this don’t get investigated

  25. Funny how this story gets zero publicity but if it was the Patriots there would be 400 comments mentioning cheating, asterisks, penalties, fines, suspensions…

    —————–

Actually you’ ve gotten very few, because the tide is officially turning, and the Steelers, Broncos, Ravens and Hawks fans that drive most of the anti-Patriots crap pop another Tums.

  27. To all the people saying the Patriots cheating is talked more about than Jerry Rice’s cheating because Rice’s cheating was from a long time ago…

Jerry Rice retired in 2004, the year the Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four seasons.

in 2015, people still cite the (erroneous and retracted) story about the Patriots taping the Rams walk through fourteen years ago. So, no, the Jerry Rice story isn’t being ignored because it’s “ancient history”. It’s being ignored because Rice is a media member and all the media outlets love him. The Patriots got crushed for two reasons: 1. the Patriots don’t give the media any information so the media has a constant grade and 2. the Patriots are the most successful organization in football right now, which makes them hated across America, and any type of story involving them is going to get lots of attention and page views.

    It’s really simple people.

  28. I just wish we would stop debating this as if the Patriots actually cheated. Fact is they didn’t. Why do fans all over the NFL neglect the truth that there is zero evidence the Patriots did anything to footballs and continue to say things like “they constantly cheat.” You can say it as long as you want and as vehemently as you want but it doesn’t make it true.

  29. It’s because the world is teeming with anal tools that pretend honesty is all-important to them, yet they are more dishonest than anybody they are accusing.

  30. My big problem with him is that he’s a hypocrite. As a Patriots fan, I am to the point where I like all of this jealousy. If you think it’s bad now, wait until Brady goes for #5.

I tell you one thing that is refreshing is that the former Steelers who won the four SBs have not attacked Brady and Belichick. I always thought they were a classy group of champions. Good guys.

  31. How about the Patriots’ alleged videotaping of practices and the NFL subsequently burning the tapes? We need more reporting on that too while we’re diving into past cheating events.

  32. Patsbrat,
Oh no! Not thumbs down, like that makes any difference. FYI, studying the rulebook and finding ways around the rules isn’t “outsmarting people”, its cheating.
The definition of a Patriots Hater:
A person who values fair play and equality in competitive sports.

  33. It’s Jerry Rice. This is like the straight A, golden boy student getting caught cheating. Brush it under the rug and forget about it. Nothing to see here!!

If this were Michael Irvin admitting it people would be calling for the Cowboys to be stripped of their Super Bowls.

  34. Whitetrash69 – so what do you think of real cheaters like rice, San fran, Denver, Atlanta, etc? Love to hear what you think of those who break the rules rather than someone who knows the rules better than everyone else and know how to play within them.

  35. whitetrash69, are you going to reveal who your favorite team is? I’m sure someone can let you know what infractions they have made. Or you could hold off if you want to remain ignorant.

  36. Mike I don’t know why you’re having such a problem understanding this.
It’s not the “cheating” that sets off the media and fans, it’s jealousy of the Patriots that sets off media and fans.
Why do you think so many go hysterical when it’s the Pats and yawn if it’s ANYONE ELSE??
And we up here in New England just sit back and laugh and laugh and laugh……

  37. Has anybody actually worn a reciever glove? I’m only asking because I just recently put one on for the first time ever. Folks those gloves have the most outrageous grip I’ve ever seen or felt. And well, I’m just going to say it, if you need stickum, you probably aren’t very good.

  38. The reason being, no other team has ever dominated the nfl like the patriots, not the 70s steelers, not the 80s niners, not the 90s Cowboys. The hate level is at an all time high. These poor haters are tired of never having a chance of winning anything because of the Patriots dominance. Jerry rice has not been beating the crap out of their teams every year. They no they have at least 4 or 5 more years of it. 20 years of being dominated is a long time. The more haters the better, it just makes every win that much better knowing that they’re suffering.

  39. Well I posted a link to a good article and it was removed, not sure why. Google “the cauldron deflategate” – the article is called “Deflategate and the Softness of the American Mind”. It’s a good look at the way the media jumped to conclusions based on very little evidence, the importance of the fact that none of the ball measurements were recorded at the start of the game (if they were even measured with a gauge at all), the reality that, if it is true that 10 of the NE footballs were “a few ticks under”, there is a rational explanation which does not involve tampering.

But of course the haters will continue to ignore facts and continue to spew the same old “they’re guilty because they’re cheaters because spygate” blather.

  40. nobody is jealous of this New England team, they just aren’t liked. Just like Seattle wasn’t liked.

The most likeable team didn’t win this year due to losing a key player, Pittsburgh

I don’t know about that, but for being small and slow and playing in an era when receivers weren’t protected like they are now, he was pretty good. As for all this cheating, players and teams are always looking for an edge, and always will be.

“pension for cheating”. A pension is a retirement benefit. Perhaps you meant “penchant”. Along with some vocabulary studying you might want to research cheating in the NFL. You’ll find its far more rampant than you think, and most of it more nefarious than spygate.

  43. Who gives a fig if players used stickum or if teams deflated balls? Athletes have used PEDs in most sports since at least the 1950s. Referees in all sports have made errors that cost games and championships.

It’s entertainment, not life and death.

No, we don’t, because we know what happened and it only takes a little time on Google to find out. The allegation of taping the Rams super bowl walkthrough was proven false. The Boston Globe ran with a story that they did not vet and had to print a retraction and an apology to avoid a lawsuit from Kraft. The Pats had permission to set up cameras the day of the Rams walkthrough. NFL Security validated that the cameras were present but ensured that there were no power supplies with the cameras on-site (they were still being charged at the hotel). John Tomasse saw the cameras and Pats employees and made an assumption about what was going on. In a rush to beat people to a story he did not wait for fact checking or responses from the Pats or the NFL.

And the super bowl was MONTHS after the Spygate tapes were destroyed. Also, after the Super Bowl we saw the Matt Walsh tapes, which showed exactly what we were told was on the spygate tapes.

  45. Once again, the Niner “dynasty” continues to be tarnished.

    Jerry Rice – cheated.

    Back in 2000 –

It costs less to cheat in the NFL than it does in the NBA. That was the message following a “settlement” of alleged violations by the San Francisco 49ers in shady contract deals for Steve Young, Brent Jones, Lee Woodall and Jim Druckenmiller made by former 49ers bosses Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark.

Compared with the five No. 1 draft choices and $3.5 million fine it cost the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves in their October case involving the illegal secret contract of Joe Smith, the NFL penalties were mere slaps on the wrist–fines of $400,000 or less plus the loss of a No. 3 and a No. 5 draft choice by the 49ers

The NFL then changed its rules to allow more stringent penalties in the future. It announced the settlement late Friday in an effort to sweep it under the publicity rug.

In both cases, fans were victims twice–first, by believing in the integrity of the systems; second, by seeing their favorite teams stripped of draft choices.

Three years after salary-cap violations by the 49ers were suspected, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the settlement. Policy will pay $400,000 and Clark $200,000. The 49ers agreed to pay $300,000 and surrender their fifth pick in the 2001 draft and third selection in 2002. The settlement, made with the agreement of the NFL Players Association, also calls for the player agents involved–Leigh Steinberg, Jeff Moorad and Gary Wichard–to contribute $350,000 to charities. But the players involved will get their money, and it won’t count against the 49ers’ salary cap, an apparent oversight in the settlement procedure. The league then decided to increase its power to punish future violations by allowing for suspensions of a year, fines of up to $3.5 million, and the loss of two No. 1 draft choices.

    ————————-
Ya damn skippy, they would. Cowboys players can’t even be great by themselves. The way haters tell it, they were only great because of each other, while jokers like Rice and Montana were great all on their own.

It seems that certain people will get a pass no matter what. I wonder how many games were won by San Francisco because of this joker using an ILLEGAL, BANNED SUBSTANCE. His rigged gloves could’ve been the difference in making the playoffs or not, or winning a Super Bowl or not (namely the second Super Bowl against the Bengals. You don’t think that franchise could’ve used that Super Bowl win?). I wonder how many of his 20,000 yards and 200 TDs are due to stickum.

One knock (and probably the only knock) on T.O.’s ability was him dropping a few too many passes. Let’s say stickums use benefits T.O.’s career by a 15% increase. Add in a couple years of playing to his career due to the extra big plays he’s making and winning, and let’s say his teams win an extra game a season that he played wearing stickum. Suddenly his career numbers threaten Rice.

If you can’t see the potential difference in rigged gloves vs unrigged, then you’re hopelessly blind…and probably homer for the player/team you’re supporting.

  47. It certainly was “God-given talent” that got cris carter into the Hall of Fame: Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss had such talent in abudance, and cris carter rode it for all he was worth.

  48. Those jealous of the CURRENT champions have no capacity for logic.

They make statements such as “The Patriots were cheating in 2001 by violating a 2006 rule” or demonstrate that they don’t understand what the word “retracted” means

The latest is their contention that Edelman had a competitive advantage by playing against the Seahawks with a concussion

Their jealousy makes these things sound rational to them

  49. I do have to hand it to some of you. You are excellent at framing the argument I to a “heads I win, tails you lose” situation. When it comes to teams and players cheating in the 60’s-90’s it’s totally acceptable because it was “decades ago”. And when it comes to the Patriots right now, it has turned into “the pats cheated and the wells report will prove it, and if the wells report doesn’t prove it, then we know the league is just covering it up”. It is impressive to say the least that in your mind there is no possibility the pats are clean. It’s really sad.

As for the argument about no one caring cuz it’s old news, the accusations about the pats filming a super bowl walk through (which has been proven false when the guy who made the claim admitted he made it up) should be considered old news right. Why do we care about a walk through from 15 years ago? Right? And in 2 years, spygate will be 10 years old. We should be able to move on like it was no big deal right? Somehow I suspect that in 20 years you will still feel the same way about spygate, even though you are arguing that since it was long ago it wasn’t a big deal

You know, with that in mind, I think every prison sentence should be capped at 20 years. After all, when it is decades old, no one cares anymore. It is irrelevant…

  50. The records Rice holds were all at one time held by Don Hutson, who still owns 8 of them after retiring 70 years ago. Hutson scored a TD every 4.93 receptions, and then had to play DB since players were all expected to play both sides of the ball. There were no gloves and there was no stickum.

  51. Seems like an attempt to manufacture some outrage. Nobody cares if a 52-year-old receiver admitted to using Stickum back in the day. It’s not even worth trolling the 49er fan base with.

  52. Someone, please show me where the Patriots were caught cheating from 2001 – 2006?? The people complaining about the Patriots are those who either lay in the wake of their championship runs or those who feel threaten by their Dynasty!! They win because of other teams stupidity, Pete Carrol’s pass play at the one yard line is the best example.

  53. for all you people who claim Pats have been caught cheating numerous times, you either show your lack of IQ or laziness to read up on the facts.

Spygate wss not filming practices or walkthrus, that was proven to have never happened. It was not stealing signals during game and relaying to sidelines. Spygate was filming the other team’s signals for FUTURE use from the INCORRECT POSITION in teh stadium. EVERY team at that time (prior to green dot helmets) used to film the other teams sideline, then store the video for future use is they were to play opponent again. Only really bad teams would ever get caught not changing signals week to week anyways. The Pats were arrognant because they tried to film from the wrong spot and claimed Goodell’s memo was only regarding if film was being used for the current game (for halftime adjustments). Hello people every team tries to steal signals anyway….hence why field level offensive coordinators cover their mouths when calling in plays on headsets today, because they actuall fear the other team has soemone who can read lips to steal signals.

Finally, that is the one and ONLY instance of Pats pushing rules. Deflategate is looking more and more like the boob GM in Indy (same guy who traded #1 pick for Trent Richardson and signed Landry to big money only to release both) thought it would be good gamesmenship to try and mess with Brady’s head. So stop with “multiple times” nonsense, because you are either lying or to lazy to read up the facts.

Where is the outrage for all 49er violations as other posters have mentioned or better yet the Denver Broncos who during both of their Super Bowl wins with Elway knowinlgy cheated on the salary cap both years to have players that should not have been able to afford? Or how those same teams put radio communication gear in OL helmets which was totally illegal….this is CHEATING folks.

Bottom line all you sorry whiners ‘hate us cause u ain’t us’….sorry your teams are not a good as Pats, you don’t have any where near as good of a QB, coach or owner…YOUR CRYBABY SORELSOER TEARS ARE SOOOO SWEET!!!!

    So for

  54. I saw a commenter talking about PEDs and Roids in baseball and he was right.

Babe Ruth admitted to using PEDs, Barry Bonds got caught with Roids, and Mark McGwire admitted to steroid use just to name a few and they are still considered some of the best players in their respective sports.

Jerry Rice admitted to using Stickum, Cris Carter admitted to placing bounties on players, and Spygate. Guess what? they are still the best at what they did.

I still believe though, if Randy Moss would of put the time in early in his career he would of been the GOAT..he was a complete monster without any work ethic, similar to AI.

  55. Jerry probably isn’t sharp enough to realize this, but the timing of his comments (after the Super Bowl) have served to mitigate the level of righteous outrage. Most NFL media are spending some well deserved time away from their indignant sports muckraking.

  56. From reading the article I’d ask ask myself as a WR why I should give you the time of day to answer any allegations, while it’s clear you are basically calling me a liar…

  57. It’s pretty simple – the Patriots have had the greatest run in the history of the NFL. What they’ve done in 1 years has never been done before, to be this consistently successful. So of course people are going to fall over themselves to take shots and try and smear their success.

Jerry Rice should probably shut his mouth if he’s going to call the Patriots cheaters when he came right out and said he cheated by using stickum. Rice is clearly one of the best NFL players of all time, but for me personally, this whole situation has soured him a little bit in my mind.

  58. Rice cheated. He was a cheater. His records, Montana’s throwing records, and 49er records with him all demand asterisks. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is. The Patriots? They broke no rules before 2007. They won 3 Superbowls before that. This one is following what is looking more and more like a sham in “Deflategate” Sorry, Hateriots but enjoy the hate.

  59. Because Rice works with the media now. Plus the Patriots are being marketed as the most hated team in the league now so they have to be made out to be the villains. There are many instances of cheating in the NFL from stickum use, to radios being used on offensive linemen, getting copies of the Brady’s audio tapes, and cheating the salary cap among others that have been swept under the rug. Let’s face it fellow Patriots fans we are the most hated team in the league now and it’s time to embrace it start trolling the haters to annoy them more.

  60. @bushwoodcc:

venerableconfusedaxiom’s lack of ability to differentiate between a retirement investment vehicle and a inclination or tendency illustrates the level of intelligence you’re replying to in Patriot Hater land

    nuff said

  61. Besides, this took place about 2 decades ago

But the cheating confession just happened recently.

Really, I couldn’t care less what Rice did in the 80’s – we’re just trying to see if you “cheating” trolls are going to have some consistency.

We already know the answer to that, too.

    We’re just exposing you.

  62. The league isn’t making a big (any) deal of it because the league (run by New Yorkers) tried to screw the Pats over (and get the media off of the terrible year it’s had with regards to domestic violence) with a bogus “cheating scandal”.

Now that it’s completely backfired and actually made one of (if not the) greatest players to ever play the game say he cheated, I don’t even know the word to explain it. Backfired just isn’t big enough.

Just another example of “The Shield” screwing it up for everyone. In trying to cover up the year they had, they just made it infinitely worse, lol.

Sooooooo, good job Goodell? I guess?

  63. Whitetrash- your name says it all. Did Tom Brady steal your lunch money when you were in junior high?

  64. I’m just curious if anyone can explain to me exactly what rule was broken by the Patriots. The most common explanations are:

    “They were stealing signals!”
Stealing signals has always been legal in the NFL and is legal to this day.

“Ok, but they were using a camera!”
Using a camera is legal and is legal to this day.

What was the infraction? Violating a 2006 memo by having a camera in an improper location (sidelines) for 6 plays during the first game of the 2007 season. Oh the humanity.

    “They taped a walkthrough!”
Nah. Didn’t happen. That story was retracted because it was bogus. Try to keep up.

    “There’s a culture of cheating!”
So sox plays breaking a brand new rule by having a camera in an improper location for six plays a decade ago is a culture of cheating? Good god. Get over yourself.

Might as well just say you wish you cheered for the best team in the NFL and you’re whining because your team is bad. At least you’d be honest with yourself.

  65. there is only one difference between “stickum” and the gloves used today…the gloves dont leave any residue on the balls….you all remember the balls dont you?

  66. No one cares because everyone did it. From pee-wee to the NFL. Spraying some stickum was just something WRs and DBs did.

  67. Wow. Just wow. Rice was integral to four 9er Championships.

    Videotaping illegal after 2006 memo.

    No walk-through tape.

    So championships still intact.

And DEFLATEGATE thus far looking like a lot of hot air.

  68. This “it isn’t recent so it didn’t happen” nonsense is utter bilge.

It’s a bigger story than deflated footballs — and that’s IF the deflated footballs is even true.

    It’s not.

  69. I wonder how much $$$ Rice and the other “I cheated too” has been panzies are getting paid (bribed) to help the NFL deflect critisism from golden boy Cheaters Baby Brady & Belicheat?! The reason this storyline isn’t “catching on” is people arent as dumb as the media & NFL infer. It’s pretty obvious this is part of the NFL’s propoganda campaign designed to minimize the importance of the cheating the Patriots were caught doing to help setup the NFL’s pending decision to not punish the Super Bowl “winners” to avoid (as much as possible) the ensuing “Cheaters won the Super Bowl” backlash that is rightly due!! Sadly, they are going to get away with it…and WE ALL KNOW IT!

  70. I think it’s hilarious how many fans of other teams still don’t accept that filming signal calling still continues today

Spygate was the placement of the camera only

The only reason the punishment was so severe is because Belichick pointed out the gaping loophole in Goodell’s rule (and Goodell doesn’t like being made to look like a fool)

Meanwhile, in trying to feign shock and horror that signal filming took place, just LOOK at what Goodell unleashed on the NFL – this ENDLESS RESEARCH into DECADES of CHEATING in the NFL

    Nice job Roger!

  71. I’m not a Patriots apologist of fan, I pretty much dislike anything to do with them except for this recent Super Bowl, the NE fans are the lesser of the two arrogance evils hahaha. Anyways, I keep returning to the AFC Championship game and how the Colts were down by 10 at the half. Luck with his “legal” footballs and Brady with his “tampered” ones were pretty blah that first half. Well, the NFL did their job and NE had to play with regulation balls…they commenced to blowing out the Colts and Luck still stunk. On to the SB and the vaunted Seahawk defense couldn’t stop the Brady…even after he tossed a terrible pick. So I’m thinking that maybe teams would want him to use underinflated balls, because the guy is pretty good with normal ones.

  72. “megatronownsyou says: Feb 15, 2015 1:53 PM

For the last time the Patriots cheating has absolutely nothing to do with receivers in the 80’s and 90’s using stickem.”

Maybe not, but it has everything to do with hypocrites like Jerry Rice pointing his (sticky) finger at the Pats when he himself knows that he cheated during his career. BTW – I am not buying into his excuse that he didn’t know it was illegal. Even as a kid during Rice’s career, I knew it was illegal. Regardless, let’s not forget the fact that there is absolutely zero evidence to support any claim that NE deflated footballs. We have one deflated football – ONE. It just so happens to be the same ball that made the rounds over on the Colts sideline, so do with that what you will…..

  73. For the last time the Patriots cheating has absolutely nothing to do with receivers in the 80’s and 90’s using stickem.”

Okay, how about this from this season then:

The Minnesota Vikings played their coldest home game in 38 years when they beat the Carolina Panthers in 12-degree temperatures at TCF Bank Stadium.
As both teams dealt with the freezing temperatures, Fox cameras showed sideline attendants using heaters to warm up game balls, which is against league rules.

  74. @whitetrash69 writes: FYI, studying the rulebook and finding ways around the rules isn’t “outsmarting people”, its cheating.

…Inserting a lineman at tight end and having him declare as an eligible receiver is not cheating. It is in the rulebook to insure the defense knows a player is playing in a position different than his uni number would normally indicate.

…Having a running back declare himself as an ineligible receiver is also in the rulebook for the exact same reason.

I said nothing about “finding ways around the rules” in my post. Knowing the rules and designing formations that confuse opposing defenses is not cheating. It is outsmarting people.

The funny thing about people like you, is that you demand “evidence”, but then say things like “we have one defalted football – ONE”, with no evidence of that

Probably the same kind of troll that insists that spygate was all just a story, because you saw no evidence. Forgetting that the NFL went out of it’s way to destroy said evidence

They cheated, they got caught. Nothing sadder than grown men pointing to other people’s bad behavior as an excuse for theirs

  76. Any possible Patriots related controversy causes huge media response for two reasons:

    1) Because of their unusually long stretch of success and…

    …perhaps more importantly…

    2) Because Belichick isn’t cozy and cordial with the media. For decades he has refused to “play along” and for some media members, especially those who tend to dominate television and radio appearances (and therefore start to mistakenly believe they are celebrities or important), it is a slap to their ego’s. How dare Belichick treat them as if they are not super stars worthy of his respect. These media members have personal vendetta’s against Belichick and can’t wait for the opportunity to sling mud his way. They’ll do anything in their power to manipulate the masses against Belichick. The end result is that even reasonable minded people become convinced of Patriots wrongdoing.

Neither Deflategate or Spygate were what they were made out to be. In neither scenario did the media even attempt to explain a rational explanation from the Patriots perspective. Instead they just brought in 2 or 3 critics to all pile on the Patriots without the slightest attempt at fair and balanced coverage. Spygate was never about cheating. It was a misinterpretation or perhaps more accurately stated as a differing opinion of what is and is not allowed. The truth of the matter is that there were no specific rules in the rule book that Belichick violated. He taped from the sideline without any attempt to hide it. How that became tabbed as “Spy”gate is a joke. The league sent a memo to the teams outlawing the practice of recording but rule change was never voted on or approved by the mandatory 75% of the league’s owners. Technically Belichick was correct. Its amazing that this in depth coverage of spygate was never told. Instead, it was “cheaters! cheaters! cheaters! and all that nonsense. The media failed and the public became a bit more stupid b/c of it.

  77. I recall the spray on stickem in high school in the mid 80s. You weren’t supposed to use it in games, but as long as you weren’t obvious, no one would know. The guys would spray it on in the locker room before the game and at half time. It wouldn’t last the entire game, but I’m sure it helped a little.

  78. From the Sporting News: “The Green Bay Packers won three NFL championships before the first Super Bowl was played, then took home the title in Super Bowls I and II. So their dynasty essentially bridged the two eras. This powerful, efficient machine of a football team used no tricks to steamroll its opponents during the decade, winning titles in the 1961, ’62, ’65, ’66 and ’67 seasons.”

    New England fan: 5 > 4.

No tricks, just simple, pure efficient football. That’s why reasonable people (meaning no Patriots honk) won’t put New England’s so-called “dynasty” in the same breath as Green Bay’s, Pittsburgh, Dallas or San Francisco’s.

The fact New England fan is constantly trying to sweep away Spygate means they are more than a little conscious about their real standing in history. Sorry, when the league takes away picks from your team, you did something wrong.

  79. All the patriots fans commenting on this article is equal to an admission of collective guilt.

The error in pension was done by auto complete, though I suppose I should have proof read my comment. Be thankful, it gave you all an opportunity to correct me. To bad you can’t correct what everyone thinks about the patriots and their fans.

  80. As an nfl ballboy/equipment manager for 4 years in the early 90s and had countless wr gloves used in games in my possession back in the day, I never once noticed any stickem and never witnessed a wr using it. jerry is tarnishing other careers to justify his greatness. Shame. Stickem is a much bigger advantage than 2psis.

  81. The Steroids..er Steelers Super Bowls in the 70’s are not tainted at all!

And Mike Webster would like to thank the Rooneys for leaving him homeless and broke on the streets

    #steelerintegrity

  82. Because everyone knows it’s a front to take the spotlight off the Patriots.

Notice how we never heard about that…and the Super Bowl was two weeks ago. Did Brady even get interviewed yet?

It’s a total joke and the media is playing into it to help and protect their Golden Boy, who even if he murdered a family, it would be twisted around and covered up.

    Because it’s “Tom.”

  83. This is nothing but a popularity contest.

    1) Professional blowhard Tom Jackson points his finger into the camera and states to world (this is when ESPN’s pre-game show was still worth watching) “They hate their coach” meaning the team hates Bill because he had the balls to cut a declining but highly paid and popular player, and the former player Jackson, not the used to be smart co-host Jackson responded. Belichick has given ESPN the middle finger ever since and that does not play well with the boys in Bristol.

    2) Mangini steals everything that is not painted or bolted to Gillette stadium, ruins our 2006 season by tampering with Deion Branch and goes to the hated Jets. Then he beats Bill in Foxboro and they have the whole handshake-lack of handshake bit and the Bill does (and probably is immediately after) look like a pretty sore loser. The world /medial goes crazy over this and basically takes another dump on Bill.

    3) SPYGATE. As a fan of the team, who has been had to endure Grogan (loved him but he kinda sucked), Cavanaugh, Eason (worlds biggest pot head), Millen, Marc Wilson, Hugh Millen, Scott Zolack…et.al, Our successes to this point put all that in the rear-view…and Bill nearly threw it all away. Make no mistake…I do and will always blame Bill for not heeding the letter from the league telling all teams to stop doing this. And for all those guys who continually talk about it..it was all legal until 2007 and the Pats only got BETTER afterwards. So suck on that.

However, at this point in Bill’s career, he’s done nothing but win and win on a MASSIVE scale and done it his way with not just little, but NO REGARD for the media whatsoever. He’s made a mockery of the injury report, done everything he could to give non-answers to questions and then schooled his team on how to do the same. Then he assembled a team that had the makings of something extraordinary and when the angry mob got their chance, they ran wild with it. Mangini who’s many times, publically, wished to God he never opened his mouth about it because it was done mostly out of spite. A who’s who of coaches have come out and said it was all blow massively out of proportion except for Don Shula…can’t imagine why a senile old man who’s still PO’d about the snow-plow, could ever have a reason to say the things he says…totally objective right?

As a sidenote….I try to never screw with karma….it always wins in the end if you mess with it. Bill’s dis it and his hubris carried a 7 year penalty as we fans had to put up with that many years of soul-crushing defeats. That was all changed of course by the Colts doing their dirty deed and changed things finally in NE’s favor and fortune gave us Malcolm Freaking Butler and the Seahawk’s OC! With the colts guys deflating balls, their team being coached by a complete DA, a trailer trash GM and a drug dealing-drug abusing-felonious owner) will NEVER win a super bowl in the Luck era. Bad juju written all over those guys…you heard it here first!) Maybe it wasn’t all Manning……

So to sum this whole damn thing up, it’s NOTHING but a popularity contest and Bill is always going to lose these. Look at the list of bitter guys who’ve ran their mouth, Shula who’s desperately hanging on to his legacy, Joe Montana/Jerry Rice/Charles Haley all trying to protect their place on the mountaintop, Troy Aikman who was about to get passed for SB wins, Chris Carter, who’s a felon, drug addict and a loser. Has he ever been part of anything that won? Jerome Bettis and Brian Dawkins…two guys who couldn’t ever beat the Patriots when it mattered and Mark Brunell who’s such a good Christian man he lost all of the 75 million he earned and had to declare bankruptcy…and played for the Jets and got his tail whooped MULTIPLE times.

Losers which over the past 15 years have been for the most part the other 31 teams, hate losing and because they suck will lash out in any way they can to make themselves feel better. Now more than ever, NFL analysts are former player who have all lost to the Pats…no double-standard or possible axe’s to grind there right?

Last…The NFL is the ultimate cheat league…PEDS are rampant just as they are in the Tour de France, Olympics, Baseball but in the NFL they are accepted as ‘part of it’…and it’s seen as ‘OK’. Weed or coke though can get you booted permanently. Even those that get caught never have any stigma attached whereas in those other sports…it’s maybe the worst possible stigma.

  84. I love the obvious envy in people trying to explain how the pats supposed cheating is any different from any other instance of cheating from the past.

first, and most important, pro football is entertainment. Nothing anyone says or does will undo the joy pats fans experienced during the playoff run. most of them have already moved on with their lives … maybe looking forward to the draft and next season.

attempting to diminish that now is pretty pointless…..just shouts out the jealousy.

the playoffs were awesome…the superbowl was awesome……the parade was awesome

btw, Jerry Rice was awesome and is no less awesome after his admission…….just sounds a little stupid for opening his mouth weeks before, but I don’t care.

I also don’t care about the salary cap curcumventions of the 9ers and broncos or the PEDs the seahawks take……….

why? because it’s entertainment…….anything resembling honor and truth left professional sports many many years ago

  85. It’s still amazing how the Patriots haters just fabricate things because no facts exist

Spygate was about CAMERA PLACEMENT – signal filming was and is remains legal. WHY DO YOU HATERS THINK COORDINATORS COVER THEIR MOUTHS?

And besides that, could you logic wizards explain how you view a NEW 2006 RULE as invalidating Super Bowls from 2001-2004?

The walk thru filming story was FALSE – the newspaper RETRACTED IT – and yet some PFT readers have still convinced themselves its true

There has yet to be any proof of any ball tampering in the Colts game – and as of now it’s looking more likely that the COLTS took air out of the ball to distract the Patriots from the game at hand during half time if newly leaked reports are true

You haters are so desperate to find SOMETHING you’re now asserting that a WR getting a concussion somehow gave him an unfair advantage

That’s a pretty big insult to the Seahawks

But overall you guys are really EMBARRASSING yourselves with these bizarre statements

  86. People care when patriots so called bend the rules simply because they can’t accept the success rate they have year in and year out and love the idea of controversy. Their winning percentage is simply unheard of in pro sports. Success creates enemies it’s a common formula.

  87. I love how haters keep saying Pats are cheaters in their first 3 Superbowls for breaking a rule that didn’t exist till 06″ and after all that time of saying “havnt won a SuperBowl since ExcuseGate” is now no longer true! You jump on to more allegations of “A deflated football” which the story has so many holes in it,I can drive a planet through it!.. So let’s make this clear!! Allegations isn’t evidence! in order to have evidence you must have “substance” which there isn’t any to show or say anybody from the Pats deflated a football! And to say it’s ok Rice cheated because he admitted to it! Or it happen so long ago who cares! I thought you haters cared about fair play! And integrity!… Right!!!!!!! More like a need to justify Ur hate for the Pats! And one more then! By the logic people use to excuse Rice! Would you be ok if ur girl or man cheated as long they admitted to it? Or would you be like… Well! Babe! Since it happen for ever ago.. it’s ok babe! I’m don’t care U got that piece on the side!…. Right!!!!!

  88. so this is for all the haters that say they don’t care about Jerry Rice’s cheating…

…because he admitted/copped to it and the Patriots won’t. Yeah, Jerry is a stand up guy for admitting cheating long after his career was over. Would you feel the same way if he admitted to cheating while he was still playing? Does that mean that you now think the Pats are ok because they admitted to spygate and that happened so long ago? Course not cause it’s the Pats.

Other than Spygate when have the Pats cheated? Because of their use of the ineligible receiver sets? Was not illegal therefore it was not cheating.
Because of deflategate? No proof that any tampering occurred, therefore it’s not cheating.

By your standards anybody can accuse YOUR team of cheating and even if there is no proof that it actually occured, your team is guilty simply for being accused.

I accuse your team of cheating. I don’t have proof but now that they are accused we have to put an asterisk next to anything they have ever accomplished. This sound familiar to you?

    HATERS = JEALOUS IDIOTS.

  89. The main reason it draws little attention is because it happened so long ago.

Deflategate just happened and on top of that, it involved the actual footballs being used to play the game.

  90. Rice admitted to CHEATING! If the Patriots are cheaters for deflategate, and with no hard evidence of intentional wrongdoing in mind you, then Rice’s reputation is forever tarnished.

As I see it, the only difference is Rice admitted to cheating, and thus, he had an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE on the playing field. Doesn’t get much worse than that. Just like PED’s. What’s the difference I say? Steroids and the like, give the player and an unfair advantage on the playing field. (I. e., see Barry Bonds, et al). His and other careers and reputations are ruined because of it.

Rice is loved. I love Jerry Rice. However, when he calls for the Patriots records to have an asterisk, then he too should be judged by the same scrutiny, and as an admitted cheater Rice should be barred from the Hall for Fame for CHEATING the game.

His excuse, as weak as it is? “All Players Did It.” Really? Who? Every receiver out there is denying it. If you know who the other cheaters are then tell the NFL. Tell the world. We know you won’t though. Those who live in glass houses…

The Patriots push the boundaries to the very extreme. The worst (fact driven) case against the Pats is that they videotaped coaches in front of 80,000 other fans (see Coach Belichick response during SB 49). As a prominent MLB player put it when asked to compare the Patritos to MLB, “If the opposing teams 3rd base coach is dumb enough to tell us when they are stealing, we throw out.”

Rice CHEATED. Waaaaay worse than videoing coaches while they are on TV being videoed taped for millions to see live too. Period!

  91. You guys just can’t let it go

All players look for advantages. It’s like how EVERY pitcher in baseball messes with the balls. It’s like how QB’s scuff the balls. If it’s just a little bit of pine tar or stick’em then people turn the other way. If the player goes overboard then the other team will call them on it.

It’s obvious that the writers of this site and much of the posters have never played beyond JV sports.
