The Colts brought Shaun Phillips in last year as a stop-gap, and decided to stop paying him Monday.

The team announced they released the veteran outside linebacker, who played five regular season games and all three postseason games for them.

Phillips has 81.5 sacks in 11 years, and has been productive recently. He had 10 sacks for the Broncos in 2013, though he only had 2.0 last year splitting time between the Titans and the Colts.

The Colts figure to be in the market for help at outside linebacker through free agency or the draft (or both).

With Robert Mathis suffering a setback in his Achilles rehab, and the Colts deactivating former first-rounder Bjoern Werner for the playoffs, it’s a spot they’ll need to address in bulk.
