Gary Kubiak: I expect Peyton back and want him back

AP

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has said in the clearest terms yet that the team wants Peyton Manning to be its starting quarterback in 2015.

I’m expecting him to come back,” Kubiak told the Denver Post. “We want to play with him. This organization has won a lot of games with him and we want to get back and do it again. Expecting him to come back.”

The Broncos have never said otherwise, but they also haven’t said that they definitely want Manning back at his $19 million salary for 2015, and there have been some indications that they might want him to take a pay cut. But Kubiak seems to think it’s a foregone conclusion that Manning will be his starter this year, and all that’s left is for Manning and John Elway to make it official.

“I don’t think there’s any hold up at all,” Kubiak said. “He and John are working through the process. That’s been the plan all along, the way I understand it.”

Manning hasn’t said that he’s definitely coming back, but expect Manning under center when the Broncos’ season starts.

  1. Laying the groundwork to “fail” him during the physical. “We really wanted Peyton back, but he’s not healthy. It was out if our hands.” And then he’s gone, and no one can question the decision.

  2. nothing but respect for Peyton as a player, a qb, and a person. Best of luck – except for when he plays the chargers.
    signed – a charger fan.

  3. give him a set of steak knives and tell him it’s time to hit the announcers booth. He had a great run and it’s time to retire before he gets really hurt.

  4. “This organization has won a lot of *regular season* games with him…”

    Fixed that for you, Kubby.

  5. That was the right thing to say… and probably the right thing to do… although it’s painful.

I don’t believe Peyton will do any better down the stretch… but the Bronco’s do NOT have their next starting QB on the roster and need to get one.

    That should be job 1.

  6. Here’s an idea…maybe someone from the media should ask Kubiak about the whole pay cut thing tomorrow at the combine when he meets the press at 10:30am…..watch him squirm and give a non answer…should be fun….

  7. I don’t know that they can do anything else: they built this team around a win now salary cap approach, and Manning gives them a better chance to win than any of their alternatives at QB. So you probably have to roll with him…

That said, I’m pretty sure we know what Peyton is at this point: a great regular season QB who struggles in the biggest games, and who is starting to show signs of age.

  8. Um, if the Papa Johns guy didn’t take a cut in Indy to help out the team, don’t expect it in Denver. You know who has taken pay cuts and has four Superbowls*? Brady.

  9. Manning will play until he breaks the other records Favre currently owns. Mr Stat would never retire with those records in reach.

It’s funny how Manning runs up his stats in the 4th quarter in games they are so far ahead in, he should not even be playing.

When it comes to the big games, his demeanor changes. He looks almost scared!!

  10. Sorry Denver ,you had your chance in the Super Bowl and blew it.You won’t get there with Peyton again.

The Bronco’s are screwed and it feels so good.
    ____________

Now that is TRUE gold coming from a Raiders fan.

  12. Joetoronto: best thing to come out or (oot) of Toronto was Snow, and his song Informer.

  13. Denver was a big mistake for an aging quarterback that played half his games indoors. Look how well he played down the stretch when it got cold, old injuries get harder to manage. All those records he holds aren’t as good as those played under much more difficult conditions, ahem,
like Tom Brady. I would enjoy watching him play again and especially for Denver, now ask yourself why Denver worked so hard to develop a running game.

  14. Brady did what the NFLPA hates and set his market (and Peytons) where it is…

If Peyton doesn’t take the cut and goes to Tennessee for max money, he looks like such a loser just bent on setting meaningless reg season records

Dan Fouts, Tarkenton, Marino, Kelly also won a lots of regular games, these poor guys just could not win the very last game of the season.

Hoc2000- the Pats do not want him even if he comes in with a -$19 million contract. Outside of 2006, the Pats have always enjoy playing Peyton during the playoffs. How else could the Pats get FOUR Rings.

  16. Here we go..The Brady and Manning comparisons again..

All I know is, when it’s said and done Peyton will never have a cheating cloud over his head. There will be NO asterisks and 100 percent of the people voting him into the HALL OF FAME will feel free of guilt voting him in. Atleast the numbers are honest, the stats, are honest. He’s passed over 50 TDS twice, and did it honestly.

Brady? Not so much. People will talk, and talk and talk. Still more to come I’m sure, and in the end we’ll see if 4 Superbowls was worth it, worth being a tainted winner, because that’s what him and Belichick will always be, tainted winners.

  17. Manning cares only for money, more money, record-breaking, stat padding, and money. He’s not interested in winning any SB’s. I forgot which journalist asked him, but when asked what his proudest accomplishment was, he said he broke a record in college. Never mentioned the SB. Google it, and check it out. Selfish egotist.

  18. “Baby come back, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Baby come back, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong and I just can’t live without you
I was wrong and I just can’t live” – Player

You might want to ask a certain female trainer about manning.

  20. Manning has already taken paycuts for the broncos. He’s worth the 19 million, and even with that, the broncos still are in the top ten in cap space available with 24 million

All I saw was wah wah wah. Also never cheated? Really? I guess pumping noise into the arena on 3 separate occasions with no investigations, making it so defenses can’t touch a receiver past 5 yards with the Ty Law rule to trying and eliminate his choking, and going to a “secret clinic” in Europe to miraculously heal his neck don’t count then. He’s not classy at all ask the Tennessee trainer and former teammates about that. He’s a great player and I hope he comes back but stop presenting Peyton Manning as this clean cut dude because he isn’t.

  22. Kubiak – suggest you learn to grovel more desperately than that for Peyton to return. He’s still thinking about whether he wants another tough year and $19M. Meanwhile Tom Brady has now won 4 Super Bowls.
    Just kiss the rings..

  23. This isn’t up to Kubiak, it’s between Elway and Manning.

And if Manning comes back, he runs the offense. Wade runs the defense. Don’t know who Denver has for the special teams, but it won’t be Kubiak, his never were even average in Houston. Never had a good draft in Houston either, until Wade showed up.

Maybe the let him run the cheerleaders. Nice gig if you can get it.

  24. Carson Palmer had a better passer rating than 25 other quarterbacks in 2014, including Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Joe “IS HE ELITE” Flacco, Colin “Nobody Has It Better Than Us” Kaepernick, “In Teddy We Trust” Bridgewater, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, and the list goes on and on and on.

  25. There is no hold up at all. You think Elway is going to be the guy that told Peyton Manning to buzz off over some cash? Please. The money will get figured out. Manning isn’t an idiot. If there are truly cap concerns (which I have read there aren’t even @ $19m), he’ll do what needs to be done to win. He’s not playing for cash at this point. He wants another ring. Grasping at straws per usual.

  26. With Manning, 12-4 and 0-1 in the playoffs. Without Manning, 4-12 and 0-0 in the playoffs.

I guess the Broncos found $21m in their cap for another division victory.
