Chiefs, Houston to talk Tuesday

AP

As expected, the Chiefs and linebacker Justin Houston will make one last effort to work out a long-term deal, before Kansas City applies the franchise tag.

Per a league source, Chiefs G.M. John Dorsey and Houston’s agent, Joel Segal, are scheduled to meet on Tuesday in Indianapolis to discuss a long-term deal for the man who racked up 22.0 sacks in 2014.

Previously, Houston’s plan was to immediately sign the franchise tender if/when the Chiefs apply it.  Now, Houston may have a different plan in mind, if a long-term deal isn’t worked out.

The Chiefs cleared some cap space on Tuesday by dumping receiver Donnie Avery and receiver A.J. Jenkins.  That could be used to pay Houston on a long-term deal, or it could be used to fund his one-year franchise tag.

  1. Every time I see these headlines, I think for a split-second that he’s in negotiations with the Texans.

  2. Last time the Chiefs had a stud sacker in his prime, the traded J Allen to the Vikes for a few picks. Who those picks are I forget; shows how poorly run the organization is.

  3. Correct me if I’m wrong isn’t it Wednesday and the combine starts tomorrow. Either way he will be wearing red and gold next yr and will get a long term deal at some point.

  4. Can you believe an NFL Team (chiefs) that went an entire season without a SINGLE TD RECEPTION by a WR? Are you kidding me?

  5. “Last time the Chiefs had a stud sacker in his prime, the traded J Allen to the Vikes for a few picks. Who those picks are I forget; shows how poorly run the organization is.”

Um, they used those draft picks on Branden Albert and Jamal charles. Pretty good trade if you ask me.

  6. Chiefs will get this done. Then OWN the draft.
Get ready Denver and greedy Manning, Andy Reid and the Chiefs are taking back the AFC West this year. the Denver window is being slammed shut, nailed down, and boarded up.
This draft will put the final touches on a dynasty built team that will make multiple Super Bowl appearances and hoist multiple Lombardi Trophies over the next decade.

You forgetting Branden Albert & Jamaal Charles, shows how poorly run your brain is.

  8. Snooker the Vikings into taking Jared Allens divaness and bloated pay demands off our hands and get Jamaal Charles with the draft pick in return.

Yea, that was such a terrible trade.

A future HOF running back, with the highest career YPC in return for a DE who is all but forgotten.

    Geez, some people…………SMH

A multiple Super Bowl winning dynasty sounds pretty ambitious, but shouldn’t your goal first be getting into the postseason and actually winning a playoff game? Reid is a good HC but he certainly didn’t have a dynasty in Philly despite the fact that in McNabb he had what he lacks in K.C. (a quality QB).

While Houston is undeniably a great talent, I honestly don’t see how keeping him is going to upgrade the Chiefs given that he was on your team last year and they were still middle-of-the-pack. But by all means, spend away on Houston as it means no cap room for needed upgrades at other positions.

(and yes, I know that my own team has mostly sucked for a long time, but it doesn’t change the analysis above….).

They got 3 draft picks for Jared Allen which became Branden Albert , Jamal Charles and some safety that never made it , make that trade again , all day everyday

They drafted Branden Albert (16 overall) and Jamaal Charles (don’t remember the pick)

The difference here is Allen wanted to leave and was making a big stink about it in the papers locally.

Houston wants to stay with the team

  12. I was a HUGE Derrick Thomas fan, but I think Justin Houston is a better overall player than the late, great D.T.

Reason – he can pass rush, he can play the run, and drop into coverage. He can also cover ground in the flats at a ridiculous speed.

Chiefs need to wrap him up. Do the right thing.

Problem is they way overpaid for Alex Smith, and Dwayne Bowe wasn’t worth his contract.
