Rex Ryan says Richie Incognito is “on a very short leash”

The Bills gave Richie Incognito another chance after it looked like the Dolphins bullying scandal might have ended his career. But they don’t plan to give Incognito many additional chances.

Bills coach Rex Ryan said on PFT Live that the Bills have clear expectations for Incognito and they won’t tolerate him falling short of those expectations.

“He’ll be on a very short leash,” Ryan said. “But again I think that’s something he embraces. I don’t think he’s going to have those issues he’s had in the past. I certainly don’t believe he will and he doesn’t either.”

Ryan said the Bills researched Incognito and are confident he’ll be the kind of person who will represent the Bills well.

“We wouldn’t have brought him into our organization if we didn’t feel that he could be a positive guy, not just in our locker room but in the community as well,” Incognito said.

And if that turns out not to be the case, Incognito won’t last in Buffalo.

  1. “We wouldn’t have brought him into our organization if we didn’t feel that he could be a positive guy, not just in our locker room but in the community as well,” Incognito said.

Wow, Incognito said that? (I think you meant “Ryan” said.)

  2. I’m all for 2nd chances…Doug Baldwin, Rice, Incog…. nobody is perfect…even pft posters who want to point fingers…okay, especially us!

  3. Incognito is the biggest scumbag in the league. This is a pathetic and desperate move by the Bills. Same story, great D no offense and you pick up a defensive minded coach, same old Bills.

  4. Biggest scumbag in the league ?
Oh, that’s right Hernandez is in jail.
Keep in mind the Dolphins staff asked Incognito to toughen up Jonathan Martin.
So some of what was reported was for that purpose. He has another chance, hopefully he takes advantage of it.

  5. I can never tell when Rex has stopped talking football and started talking about his personal interests.

  6. Sad how Jonathan Martin gets a free ride in all of this. No one ever brings up that all of Martin’s whining started when he was benched, and that he took part in the locker room banter every bit as much as Icognito did.

  7. Rex Ryan: “No distractions here folks….Bills will win SB50 – I guarantee it!”

I feel so bad for Buffalo. They had some good games last year. They needed a HC and got a side show barker selling snake-oil instead.

    That team deserves better…

  8. Doug Whaley says of Rex Ryan ““He’ll be on a very short leash. But again, I think that’s something he embraces. I don’t think he’s going to have those same tongue-in-cheek, laughable, statements that then translate to loosing issues that he’s displayed in the past. I certainly don’t believe he will.”

Whaley said the Bills researched Ryan and are confident he’ll be the kind of person who will represent the Bills well.

“We wouldn’t have brought him into our organization if we didn’t feel that he could be a positive guy, with or without high heels on.”

  9. who would of thunk, a guy on his 8th chance is on a short leash….why do the NFL put themselves in these kinda positions? Are you telling me you couldn’t find another OL that can get the job done? That Richie, a 31 yr old fat average OL gets another chance? Rex what you just told the team was If you can play we will forget everything wrong you have done in the past….lets see how this works out….sexually assaulting a dolphin volunteer and getting a job in the NFL really shows how Goodell changed the culture of crimes against women after the Ray Rice debacle smh

  10. tomsetter123, If you can get to Brady 2 times this year & knock him around & beat ’em the sky would be the limit… but that has to get done or the darling patsies are gonna win it again!!!

  11. The bills needed to hire an offensive mine and just pair him with Schwartz.

It’s completely mind boggling, you’re offense wasn’t good, and you need a QB..so you hire REX RYAN?

  12. “Really impressed with Josh. I know that probably doesn’t surprise anybody.” Surprises the hell out of me. What is there to be impressed about? Career back up that has had one good half season. So impressive!

  13. I remember when fans here in massachusetts were calling talk radio begging the pats to sign this guy. Thank god Bill knows better now we can watch the Buffalo Bills on hard knocks and watch richie go crazy

  14. The first thing Rex said about the Bills’ reasoning for bringing in Incognito was “community” …

The Buffalo community is blue collar, tough and probably thinks J. Martin is/was a wimp …

tougher things have been said to many an employee in Buffalo/Pittsburgh/USMC than were exchanged between theses two alleged friends …

  15. Head coaching the N.Y. Jets or Giants is very different than coaching in Buffalo. Rex just may get it right up there and to me would not be a surprise. He get the qb position going and the Bills will be fun to watch.

  16. Why? Ray Lewis killed two people, reached a plea bargain and is now a sports media broadcaster and probably an HOFer.

……and you’re putting Incognito on a short leash for hurting Jonathan Martin’s feelings?

My god, what has this world come to.

  17. Incognito has been an embarrassment to every team he’s played for, including multiple colleges.

What gives Rex Ryan any inclination that he will “represent the Bills well?”

    ++++++++++++++++———————————-

Bills could do it with that front 4 and Rex (see Pats v Jets games in 2014 – 3 points or less)

Its more than winning. Bills beat Green Bay last season.
Its that they hired a blow-hard who’s act played well in NYC but probably will get tiresome very fast in Buffalo.

Then you look at his replacement Todd Bowles- first words out of his mouth leave a positive impression. Makes Ryan look even worse.

  19. Reporters asked Rex Ryan about deflategate today, and he laughed and said the Patriots won the Super Bowl fair and square. In other words, if you still think the Patriots did something, you are officially dumber than Rex Ryan.

  20. I was wrong; I thought Incognito was brought in by Rex and the Bills to toughen up the offensive line.

Just like he was asked to toughen up Jonathan Martin when they were with the Dolphins.

  21. If a guy ever made sexually explicit comments on my mother or sister repeatedly in a work place. I would legitimately lose my job to rearrange his face. I don’t care if I was the least popular guy in the locker room.

  22. lets face it. The Bills got themselves a NASTY O-line that has a lot to prove. This is a solid move in my opinion

  23. Since we are talking pets and leashes. Would Rex like to have his former favorite pet, Mark Sanchez come to Buffalo as his QB?
Buttfumble II with resurrected coach and resurrected players on short leashes.

  24. FREE ICOGNITO!! I hope the Bills play the 49ers this year. Jonathan Martin would probably be inactive for too much stress reliving all those MEAN text messages….

  25. The only way the Bills would play the 49ers this year would be in the Super Bowl.
Are you kidding?? 49ers won’t make it to the Super Bowl.

  26. @arcross12042004scorp15: Thank you for being a football fan with some class. Figures a Pat fan would jump on a Bills blog and tall junk. It’s also nice to hear Rex speaking without a gag around his mouth and John Idzik’s foot on his throat! As a NY Jets fan, well, just NY fan in general. I root for the Bills every Sunday, except those Sunday’s you guys play my Jets, lol. Let me tell you this! You’re in good hands with Rex Ryan being your Head Coach and with something to prove! My opinion, and it’s my honest opinion. If Rex Ryan had been lucky enough to draft a average QB at the time like Brady with what the 169 pick? Like the Pat’s saw that coming?? Also when Billy B. Says they wanted to play Brady the year before. He’s full of well, BS Because there’s no way Brady starts over Bledsoe with Parcells in charge, no way!!!! So don’t drink that Kool-Aid Billy B. & the NFL are trying to serve you lol. Anyways, if Rex Ryan had at least an average to above average QB he would have won in NJ and that my friend is the truth! Think 2000 Baltimore, more then Jets! Bills just won at least 3 to 5 more games by signing Rex!

  27. Why all the negative feedback? Ryan said he wanted a bully team and that’s just what Incognito is. Truth is Incognito’s nasty in the trenches, and that’s just what Ryan and the Bills are looking for. Don’t forget he was a pro bowl guard so you know the guy can play. I can only hope he can and will put that talent, power and toughness towards playing football and being the best he can be. Has he changed, will he change, making himself and the Bills along with their fans happy? I truly hope so.

  28. Let it go. People who have done far worse are still in the league so just because you believe in some make believe fairy tale that a 300lb man can be bullied, doesn’t mean anyone else does.

  29. I think Incognito is the worst d-bag in the NFL.

But at some point, he deserves a last shot in the NFL. I can recognize that he is a very good player, versatile and can play anywhere on the O-Line.

If he behaves, Rex will look like a genius.

  30. Incognito is the offensive equivalent of Suh. Everybody talks trash about him but would love to have him on their team.

  31. I dont know if the Bills have any charity golf tournaments but for any female volunteers who happen to there while Incognito is around, be sure to wear a cup.
