Rick Spielman says he expects Adrian Peterson back with Vikings

AP

The support for Adrian Peterson’s return to the Vikings is gaining steam.

After team COO Kevin Warren came out in support of the running back coming back, General Manager Rick Spielman gave it more weight Wednesday morning.

We expect Adrian Peterson to be part of our football team,” Spielman said, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Peterson’s under contract to the Vikings, at $12.75 million for next season. That number has led to plenty of speculation about his future, and Spielman wouldn’t talk about any potential restructuring.

“I think our whole organization is on that same page [about wanting Peterson back],” Spielman said. “What team wouldn’t want an Adrian Peterson talent? He’s unique player that you don’t see come around too often and Adrian’s been a key part of our organization.

“He’s made a mistake. He’s doing everything and he’s got to follow through and rectify and do the things the NFL is requiring him to do.”

Peterson’s working to resolve his suspension from the NFL, which says he can’t apply for reinstatement until April 15.

With the free agency/trade period a month before that, it’s clear that others would like it resolved as well, but the round of endorsements Peterson’s receiving from team officials seems coordinated.

Then again, they had “no intent” to trade Percy Harvin, right before they traded Percy Harvin.

  1. If they wanted him back they would of reinstated him last year when they could.

They waited so they could waive him without incurring a 15 million dollar cap hit this season as it will only cost them 2.5 million in dead money to do it now.

  2. Why would they move Peterson? His cap hit isn’t a problem, and the fact that he didn’t really play last year means that he is healthy and injury free. A hungry Purple Jesus looking to prove a point plus an emerging franchise QB in Bridgewater could propel the Vikings to a Wild Card berth in 2015.

  3. The staff here will be so disappointed when AD is still with the Vikes next season, after working overtime to push the “AD will not be a Viking” agenda this entire time.

  4. If memory serves me right, Percy Harvin was a headcase and no one wants to touch him. Including the free-spirit, easy going Pete Carroll.

Moving on from Percy was an easy decision since he’s a cancer to any team.

Percy would never stay after practice during training camp and sign every single peice of jersey, football, etc. Adrian has done that countless times.

  5. Adrian better be back. If he goes to another team expect the single game record rushing record to be shattered when he plays the vikings.

Even though the comments and support have been similar to the harvin situation, harvin was a problem in the locker room. Adrian is the exact opposite in the locker room. He is truly a team leader.

  6. Speculate all you want, but there are already a number of players (Greenway, Charlie Johnson, Greg Jennings, etc.) who could be cut or have their contracts restructured, which will probably happen anyway. That in of itself would take care of the Peterson cap hit.

  7. “Rick Spielman says he expects Adrian Peterson back with Vikings.”

And under his breath he was then heard to mutter…..(“dang it all”)

  8. I know the Vikings can’t have any contact with Peterson, but what about the Vikings contacting Peterson’s agent? Stupid question I know, but I was just curious.

  9. I can just imagine as Teddy and Adrian line up in the backfield together for the first time in the Hall of Fame game.

Adrian: “Teddy, what are you doing back here standing next to me?”

Teddy: “I’m in the pistol formation.”

    Adrian: “The what now?”

Teddy: “Look, after the ball is snapped, I’m going to read what that defensive end does. If he does this, I’m going to hand it off to you. If he does that, I’m going to fake the handoff to you and then throw it to Charles Johnson.”

    Adrian: “Whaaaaaaaat?”

Teddy: “Adrian, we’ve made a few changes in the offense while you were gone. We don’t just turn around and hand the ball off to you anymore.”

Adrian: “Who the heck is Charles Johnson?”

  10. Comparing AP to Harvin is ridiculous. Peterson has never been a problem in practice, in the locker room or during games…..all of his issues have been off-the-field. Harvin, on the other hand, is simply a turd and needed to be flushed.

  11. The NFL is working with the Vikings to make this happen. The April 15th reinstatement practically grantees that the Vikings can’t move him and then with some regret and apologies to all offended fans, (tongue in cheek) there is only one choice, that he plays for the Vikings again. They now have leverage to renegotiate his contract, (no one else can touch him) and all is well and forgotten as soon as some other dumb head makes some other boneheaded move and our attention shifts to him. Don’t believe me? How long has it been since the Washington’s teams name has been in the headlines?

  12. They’re nuts if they pay him 12.75 mil after what happened last season. They need to get him to take about a quarter of that to make it worth retaining him.

  13. If he comes back with the Vikings, watch out!! He’s got a chip on his shoulder and he’s going to be running over everyone cause he’s going to be angry as all get out!! I’m guessing he’ll be running over packer defenders left and right. Heck, it’ll be like 2012 all over again, when GB defenders would just get out of his way!! LOL!!
I say Let’s GO!!! He has been a leader, made a mistake, paid for it dearly. I doubt he does that to his kids again, based on his past history. I know that everyone tried to dig up dirt on AP but all they got is this one story. He paid his dues, time to get back to his career!! Let’s GO!!!!

  14. At least AP wasn’t seen doing the things Guion and Sharper did. Just ask the trolls in the east who’s better AP or Guion and Sharper? There’s something that burst when you put on that terrible green and yellow period.

  15. I suspect he stays with a small renegotiation, but who the heck knows?

And I love the Ravens fan above making a crack about player criminal activity — must have pretty thick glass walls in that house he’s throwing rocks from.

  16. O course he will be back. Of course they want him back. Who wouldn’t ?? Teddy had to be the man as a rookie and performed admirably. With AD back there i really expect Teddys game to escalate and the Viking offense will be much more dynamic.

  17. Time heals all wounds…

The Daily Norseman wrote a great article on the salary cap, showing that the Vikings don’t really need to restructure AP’s contract if they choose not to.

Cutting just 2-3 guys, in addition to their already $18 mil cap room, means the Vikings will have about $28 mil to spend on free agency. All of that is WITH Peterson’s current contract.

Does that mean AP would be overpaid? Sure. But who cares? It’s not our money. Guess what? Every team in the NFL overpays for a couple positions. And there isn’t a better RB in the NFL. The numbers don’t lie.

  18. Packer fans really wouldn’t mind AP staying with the Vikes. The Vikings, without Favre, have only 1 win against GB since he’s been in the league. AP gets his yards but the Packers always get the win. I sometimes wonder if Viking fans even know that games are decided by points and not individual stat lines.

  19. I’m looking forward to the Vikes “spanking” the Packers and others this year with or without AD.

    SKOL!

  20. Not a Vikings fan per se, but the Vikings would be making a huge mistake if they don’t bring back the hands down best RB in the NFL . After what happened this past year with AD, I would hate to be a defender trying to tackle him this year.

  21. Seriously? The Vikings, with or without AP, have no chance either game against the Packers. I think any person with 1/16 of a brain can make that prediction right now. I love how insecure Vikings fans are that every headline here has to somehow turn into a diss on the Packers.

Meanwhile, the Packers, can go back to dusting off their World Championship trophies (14) and the Vikings can…naaah, forget it. (0).

  22. Won’t matter either way. NO SUPER BOWLS FOR YOU!…

Said the Seahawks on the overtime winning drive

  23. Once again, if the “front office” said anything different, it would diminish Peterson’s potential trade value. They won’t say a single thing against him…….yet.

The Vikings did just fine last season without him while rebuilding, they will do even better this year WITHOUT Peterson on the team!

  24. Meanwhile, the Packers, can go back to dusting off their World Championship trophies (14) and the Vikings can…naaah, forget it. (0)….

The dust is getting very thick

  25. It looks like AP is on probation in the State of Texas. One mess up and those felony charges come back. Good luck Vikes.

  26. What might be more interesting to watch is what happens with the sponsors. They were the leading force last fall for not wanting to support a team that supports a child beater.

Most players do get a second chance but there are still a few transgressions that are considered so heinous that sponsors cannot overlook. Child abuse is a borderline topic, they can overlook drug use, DWI, and most felonies short of murder but child abuse represents a certain sickness that makes them very nervous. Its called a moral conscious, something that’s lacking with the owners (Wilf’s) but not with the sponsors.

  27. It looks like AP is on probation in the State of Texas. One mess up and those felony charges come back. Good luck Vikes…

He was charged with a misdemeanor

  28. The last time people doubted Adrian Peterson he ran for the 2nd most yards in football history and led a team to the playoffs that no one thought would get there.

Of course he also didn’t have a fan-voted Rookie of the Year QB with a season of experience under his belt or the most-improved-by-consensus coaching staff.

    Haters gonna hate.

  29. Championships are made in the offseason.

And no one has won more offseason championships than the 52 time Offseason World Champion Minnesota Vikings.

While contenders draft and develop, build depth in the mid-late rounds, plan for the future, and avoid overpaying for 31 year old running backs when their team clearly has needs elsewhere…Spielman and the fans continue to pretend they are playing Madden.

I am not a psychic, but I foresee a huge “splash” (or should I say “Flash”) during the draft and $12M going to Peterson. And I also see them going 9-7 at best and another year gone. Again, this is not my psychic powers, but the brutal reality of 52 years of Vikingness.

  30. What might be more interesting to watch is what happens with the sponsors. They were the leading force last fall for not wanting to support a team that supports a child beater.

There are plenty of sponsors for the the Vikings and the NFL…Radisson was out, and Pepsi replaced them within a week…
Sponsors like to make noise…but what is their alternative? Pushing the Budweiser Horses commercials on Christmas day in the NBA? Get real..

  31. While contenders draft and develop, build depth in the mid-late rounds, plan for the future, and avoid overpaying for 31 year old running backs when their team clearly has needs elsewhere…Spielman and the fans continue to pretend they are playing Madden………………………………..

The Packer offices are closed until April 30th…then it is on to street free agent signings…TT does nothing to improve the team. He just relies on Rogers to overcome his shaky draft picks..

Could have had Wilfolk last year..if he tried…but signed Guion..It’s all about cost with TT

  32. “The dust is getting very thick” [Packer’s World Championship Trophies]

Uhhh….a January 2011 hoisting of the VINCE LOMBARDI (not Bud Grant) trophy is considered dusty?

Dusty is the last appearance of the Vikings in a Super Bowl (loss, of course). Hello, the 1970s are calling…

  33. Percy harvin and AP situation is totally different Harvin was a cancer to the team while AP was suspended for disiciplining his child regardless Packer trolls shouldn’t even speak you guys choke on a birds bone lol and if AP was to be traded it has to involved a first-round plus a talent equal or near AP #Facts

  34. Here is why he comes back at full price. After they restructure Jennings, Greenway, and cut Johnson, they will still have 30 million to play with while giving AP his full payment. Also, with AP back on the team, it relieves the pressure of the vikes having to make the first draft pick an offensive linemen. They will trade back and get two first round draft picks in the first round. Sweet

  35. Adrian Peterson plays like he should be a Bear.

    Not a Viking.

That the guy is in Minnesota is an unexplainable freak of nature.

  36. The Packers sure want him back on the vikings squad. Isn’t Peterson something like 4-12-1 all time vs Green Bay?

I wouldn’t call that MVP. I’d call that MOP, or Most Overrated Player.

Big deal 2 Super Bowl in the last 50 years despite having 2 HOF QBs…A fart in the Wind

  38. Everything the Vikings are saying about Adrian Peterson is meaningless.

Of course they would love to have him at a discounted price….but that just isn’t going to happen. Things are pretty sour at this point from both directions and they have McKinnon now, so I certainly see AP going elsewhere…..and for bigger bucks than the Vikings are willing to dish out.

    ——————–
Based on what? The fact that every statement coming from Winter Park is in support of AP? Based upon nobody on Earth stating that another team will pay $15 mil for AP? Or based upon the fact that McKinnon is recovering from back surgery so therefore can handle a full load of being the main half back?

    I await your response…

The Vikings have had more playoff losses than any other franchise in the NFL.

So, despite only being around since 1960, the Vikings have made the playoffs more than most other teams? Well, that is impressive!

Weak. That’s the best you have? I guarantee you every single player that has played against AP has a lot of much deserved respect for him. As do players that play against Aaron Rodgers. Maybe you should try buying yourself some self respect, and class.

Ask Tramon Williams, every time Adrian ran off right tackle, he was hiding behind a linebacker

As a Dolphin fan I am shocked Spielman still has a job. Guy set us back 3 years.
    —————–
That is a bummer. But, just like Belichick and Carrol, some guys learn from their first job and firing. Spielman is building from the ground up. The Ponder pick was bad, but that happens. If they keep AP, and with Teddy, the next several years will be very good.

The Vikings have one of the youngest teams in the NFL, drafted a QB last year, and have the best RB in the NFL in AP. You simply have no idea what you’re talking about. EVERY single expert in football agrees that the Vikings are an up and coming team.

Since their QB is a rookie and will be under that rookie contract for several years, it’s not that difficult to give the best RB in football a premium contract. What’s the difference between that and a team paying a QB $20 mil, but then not paying high salaries at every other position?

By Packer fans logic, they should hope AP signs with Seattle, because then maybe they won’t blow an epic lead with only 5 minutes left in the game.

And he should be, considering Ponder was drafted in the first round (12th overall) and Tolzien was signed to the practice squad.
