John Elway: We’ll tag Demaryius Thomas if no deal by deadline

The Broncos may not be sure that quarterback Peyton Manning will be back in 2015, but they know they don’t want his top wide receiver leaving the team.

General Manager John Elway said at the combine Thursday, via Lindsay Jones of USA Today, that the team will either sign Demaryius Thomas to a long-term contract by the March 2 deadline to use the franchise tag or they will use the tag on him to ensure that he remains with the team for the 2015 season.

It’s not a great surprise that the Broncos would take that approach. Thomas has caught 297 passes for 4,483 yards and 35 touchdowns over the last three seasons and he should have plenty of big years ahead of him with his 28th birthday not coming until December. The chances of turning those numbers into a multi-year deal that works for both sides in the next 10 days may not be great, but using the tag would give the two sides several more months to work one out.

Wide receiver Wes Welker and tight end Julius Thomas are also set to be free agents next month, although it’s likely that only Thomas’s future with the team will be greatly impacted by the team’s decisions regarding his namesake.

  1. Well, that is no surprise at all….but Now Julius Thomas is likely gone as the amount of money he will demand will be way over what his value is.

J Thomas is a good TE, but Manning made him great. Another team will pay him tons of money and then find that out.

  2. Julius Thomas already turned down a Bronco offer that would have made him 3rd highest paid TE in the league, despite the fact that he missed all of his first season and several games last season nursing ankle injuries. He is talented but soft, took forever to come back from his ankle last year–and is not worth the money he is seeking. Someone will give him a good contract–but he won’t be good value over time.

  3. Hopefully they get a long term deal worked out, but yeah, franchising D. Thomas is obviously the next logical step. Gonna be an interesting free agency for the Broncos. Probably unlikely, but there’s a chance they could lose a huge chunk of their receiving corps (amongst other things) this offseason. Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker at WR, but also, all three of their TEs are free agents as well in Julius Thomas, Virgil Green, and Jacob Tamme.

  4. I wonder if joetoronto has even one friend. Sounds like a bitter little troll sitting in his basement waiting for the Maple Leafs to become relevant.

  5. Ol’ John was a beast that never got tagged like some beef cattle back in his day. Yep. So don’t go run off and tag Demaryius like some four-legged beast, ya hear. Two-legged, sure.

Hee Haw was a great show.

Peyton is all stats. If It weren’t for Rex Grossmen he wouldn’t have the ring he has!

And Tom Brady’s Patriots won a Super Bowl against a team led by Jake Delhomme one year. What’s your point?
