Mike Zimmer: I believe Adrian Peterson will be back

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer expects suspended running back Adrian Peterson to be on his team this year.

Zimmer sounded an optimistic note on PFT Live about Peterson returning to the Vikings, assuming he’s reinstated by the NFL after fulfilling his suspension for child abuse.

“I have not been able to talk to him since he’s been suspended, but I believe Adrian will be back,” Zimmer said. “If he plays, we’re planning on having him back with the Vikings.”

Zimmer did leave room for the possibility that Peterson will want a fresh start elsewhere, and he said if that’s the case, the Vikings would be open to it.

“If he was just dead set against it and he wasn’t gonna be happy where he’s at, then we’d discuss maybe something else, but I just don’t see that happening. I think he’s happy with the progress of where the organization is going, I think he’s happy with the way Teddy [Bridgewater] is playing and the things we’re trying to do to improve this football team and hopefully he’s excited to be part of it,” Zimmer said.

Asked if Peterson will be on the field for the Vikings in Week One, Zimmer answered, “I believe so.” It’s not a sure thing, but the Vikings are operating as if Peterson will be on the team in 2015.

  1. If I’m AP no way am I returning to Minnesota. Time to move on and make some money elsewhere instead of returning to a team who wants to renegotiate your contract after you missed a whole season of pay last year.

I’m betting 99% AP and the Vikings are history. Dallas or Seattle would be a good place to land on a competitive team.

  2. skawh, AP was paid last year for every game. No one in the Vikings organization has said he needs to renegotiate his contract, that has been entirely media driven – not without some logic considering how much more he’s making than anyone else, but still entirely media driven. The Cowboys won’t have any cap space for him after tagging Dez.

  3. The guy’s got a right to make a living, and I believe in second chances (Lord knows I’ve needed and gotten them) but even as a diehard Vikings fan I will not be able to cheer for a guy who beats a child bloody. I hope he’s learned some things, and I wish him well, but in a different uniform, please.

  4. I’m sure Zimmer would prefer a legit wide out and better quarterback play. When they fill those positions the team could take the next step.

  5. To: skawh:

I agree with everything you’ve said except for Peterson’s prospective destinations once he inevitably parts ways with the Vikings in defiance of Zimmer’s empty, unfounded, PR lip service. Seattle can’t afford him (esp at close to $10mil per) & Dallas doesn’t want AP as much as the media would have us believe; nor are they in any financial position to accommodate him.

Look for Peterson to end up in Oakland, Jacksonville or Cleveland; the only 3 teams that can actually afford him & are in need of a top-flight running back.

How is this a sad day in Vikingland? Vikes are getting back arguably the best and most ferocious RB in the league. Have fun trying to tackle this guy when he steps onto the field. Remember the last time he made a comeback? MVP. In a gym somewhere there’s a huge stack of weights getting thrown around like toys by this guy.

    Sound the horn!!

  7. The only people who don’t want Peterson back in Minnesota are Packer fans because he beats their team constantly.

The Vikings are improving and they know it, but at least they can continue to tell us all how they’re ‘loaded and ready for another champioship run’ like they did ALL last year… how’d that last 4 minutes go vs Seattle? We were assured over and over again by their arrogant fans that the packers were going to win another championship, did they blow it big time??? yup.

  8. Let’s face it: Adrian is not the sharpest knife on the tree. But even he is smart enough to see that Teddy Bridgewater is going to lift this team to heights never before imagined. If the Vikings offer him a ticket on the Teddy Train, no way would he turn that down.

  9. Maybe they can reward him with a new contract to make up for lost income ?? Yeah, right… $~13 M for a RB ?? Goodluck with that.

  10. Of-season of optimism runs true every year, yeah he is the Vikings best player but at best the Vikings are coming up third again or switch spots with the Bears.

Some teams just ASK to be laughed at.
    ===============

Its ok. Most people will quit laughing at the GB chokejob when next season starts!

  12. It must be tough being an NFC North fan seeing a team with a rookie coach, a rookie qb, and their best player miss the entire season and still go 7-9. That is the floor ladies and gentlemen.

  13. Some teams just ASK to be laughed at…

“I just don’t understand why Clinton Dix just didn’t make a play on the ball” Chris Collinsworth

  14. I hope they keep him at that amount. Vikings still won’t beat the packers in the division………..

Meet Malcom Butler….Once Wilson is paid…the days of the Seahawks will be coming to an end..

  15. Packer fans comments just show how scared they are of the Vikings and their future. the Pack is going into a deep decline. Another 25 years of futility is on the doorstep for this vastly overrated franchise of chokers! Scared, aren’t you Carl?!

  16. This guy is being shoved down the throats of the Vikings and their fans. They have to say nice things with the hope they won’t mess up him playing somewhere else, which is what they really want.

They’re not saying: “Yes, we want him back. We’ll do all we can to get him back. He’ll be back.”

They’re saying: “We believe he’ll be back. We think he likes where we’re going as a team. We’re planning on him being here.”

Huge difference in what they’re saying and what they want.

  17. You pay him because he is a total game changer who cares that he is a running back you pay him because he dominates no wide receiver is worth more they know how much he opens everything up he was a league MVP look down that MVP list and see what they get payed

  18. Delusional Viking fans. 50 years as a loser…

Delusion is fans thinking the Packer will win the Super Bowl every year..Best offseason champions in 5 years..

  19. For you fact checkers, the Vikings with AP are 3-7-1 against GB. AP gets his yards but the Packers get the wins.

As for the vike’s 7 wins last season, they came against teams with a combined record of 34-77-1. Only 1 win against a playoff team (Car). Now they get a 3rd place schedule instead of their customary last place schedule. They’ll be fortunate to go 5-11.

But keep boasting so we can keep laughing.

  20. Some teams just ASK to be laughed at…
    ______

Speaking of laughing, remember how the Packers were all laughing on the sideline with five minutes left in that NFC Championship game? They were just about to apply the Gatorade bath to McCarthy when the laughing suddenly stopped.

  21. Packer backers are starting to get scared because their “God” of a QB is getting older and their team is getting older and more banged up. While the Vikings and Lions are getting younger and getting better.

Once Rodgers retires, GB is in trouble. You have a better chance at winning the lottery 3 times in a row than finding a future HOF QB 3 times in a row.

Like every other NFL team they’ll struggle to find their franchise QB. It’s just part of the game and Packer fans have been very fortunate to have 30 years of great QB play on their team.

  22. He should return to MN, they deserve each other. A classless individual paired with a classless organization. AP can continue to strive to win that ever elusive 2nd playoff game in his illustrious career. #bestRBever

Remember when Antoine Winfield realized there were 12 men in the huddle? And yelled “Nooooooooooooo….” on the sideline during the 2009 NFC Championship game?

    That was funny.

Never happened. Wishful thinking. Which is also the Viking game-plan year after year.

  26. Packers fans, your team had the most humiliating collapse EVER. That was the funniest thing all season. Every time you think of commenting on any team just remember the fake fg, or the hail mary 2 pt conversion, or the feeble coaching, or Rodgers face after your D got smoked in OT. Cause every time I read a post from a Packers fan I enjoy thinking of how funny it was watching that bravado go up in smoke in under five minutes. Priceless

  27. Vikes fans, we have no excuse with how GB ended the season. They’ll learn from it and it’ll strengthen the team’s resolve. We’ve let it go and have moved on. You haven’t. Which makes sense, since when hope is hiding, Freudenschade takes its place.

Now back to the article, AD in ’15 becomes the 4th best back in the NFCN. Right after Lacy, Forte and your own McKinnon – who gets some YAC after Teddy spends the season checking down to him.

    Still
    Keep
    On
    Losing! SKOL!!!!!!!!

He peaked in 2012. No way any RB on the downside of his career is worth $12.75M. Zimmer better hope they can somehow get out of that contract and get something of value in return.

He’s not a Used Car.. Put a few Miles on it and throw it away!
A running back Like Peterson has never played before
And YES I AM respectfully comparing to Jim Brown and Walter Payton (RIP).
All the flack will be forgotten after his 2200 yard return season with the Vikings..

  29. I am so glad the Packers could provide so much off-season amusement for the Viking fans. I was beginning to feel guilty about how thoroughly the Packers own the Vikings. We’re not cruel. I guess it’s OK if we let you up for a little air once in awhile. You know…keep your nose slightly above the waterline. Enjoy it while you can. It’s all you got.

  30. Delusion is thinking the Vikings will ever win a Super Bowl……

No Vikings fans have said that recently. All that is heard is the constant drone from the East on how next year, the Packers will win the Super Bowl…every year…Now that is delusion..

Yeah, losing an NFC Championship game in soul-crushing fashion is really tough. The fans never forget, but it’s tough on the players too. In fact, the Vikings were 6-10 the next season. Hey, the Packers went 6-10 in 2008 after their soul-crushing loss in 2007, too. But I’m sure next year’s Packers will come back stronger than ever.

And I believe that the Packers are the biggest choke artists in all of sports history!
    ———————————————————-
Yes, they did choke. What about the other one they were in with Rodgers? SB mayebe? Lets look at the last 2 NFC Championship the Vike’s were in. They had the best team in 98 right. Then you have the N.O game which was a different kind of choke, but they should of won.

  33. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Feb 19, 2015 1:25 PM

Some teams just ASK to be laughed at

    )))))))))))))))))

I agree, and one of those teams are the queen bay packers. 3 minutes away from a SB and choked.

  34. Packer fans of all people shouldn’t be bashing the Vikes on the AP thing. They did, afterall, have their starting qb, AND their starting RB all season, as well as about a quarter the injuries the Vikes had during the year and still didn’t impress anyone. The fact that, with a rookie qb, no 1st, or even 2nd string RB to speak of, and 3 of 5 starting o line out, the Vikes only lost by what to the Pack, 3 points in Minny? LOL!! What kind of season would the rest of the division have had , had we had all of our starters in the division games at full strength like they all did? I’ll answer that for you, we would’ve swept the Bears and Lions, and easily split with GB.

  35. The Poet mindset is not reality. Fantasy is fun. GB fans routinely have fun with fantasy in their sister’s underwear drawer.

  36. And we continue to laugh at the Green Gay Packers. Not only only bc they choke but jealous bc AP will turn that switch on them Packass when he returns to the Vikings.

  37. fng1
Thanks for stating the obvious that queen bay chocked. It was the biggest choked job in NFC championship game history.
And while you brought up a certain 15-1 team, you conveniently forgot another. That would be the queen bay team that also made NFL history. Yes, queen bay as many of us know choked before as well. The packers were the first team in NFL history to go 15-1 in the regular season only to lose the first playoff game they played. No other team before or since has done that.

  38. Extreme choking is not losing the NFC Championship game, it’s losing 4 Super Bowls.
Vikings 0-4 in the Super Bowl, Packers 4-1. Which team is the real choker? Simple math.

  39. Outlass

Going 0-4 in the SB’s doesn’t mean the team choked. You are reaching for some salve for your recent wounds. You won’t find it there.
Losing to the Steel Curtain and the 1972 Dolphins isn’t choking. sorry I had to break it to you. But you are a typical cult member, ill informed Queen bay fan . Your team had a historic choke job, so deal with it.
