Report: Jameis Winston’s football knowledge impressing clubs

AP

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston’s knowledge of the game reportedly caught the attention of numerous club officials who met with him this week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

In a story published Saturday, Bleacher Report‘s Mike Freeman quoted an unnamed evaluator who raved about Winston’s “[f]ootball IQ.”

Said the evaluator: “I think he’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever interviewed.”

Freeman also reports that Winston had been compared to Peyton Manning from a football intelligence standpoint “several times” in the reporter’s discussions with club officials.

With Winston likely to be a high draft pick who could be in contention to start as a rookie, the raves he’s drawing for his understanding of football concepts could augur well for him being handed the keys to an offense right off the bat.

  1. Winston is the class of this QB draft regardless if you like him or not. Stealing a couple crab legs doesnt null and void his talent and his “it” factor that Mariota doesnt have. Marcus will need system that caters to his strengths. Winston can play in ANY system. If Tampa takes Mariota over Winston they’ll forever regret that decision. But its the Buccaneers, so it wouldnt shock me I guess.

  2. I don’t like the guy as a man but he is going to be a hell of a player.

If only he didn’t have his off the field issues, but we can at least hope they’re in the past.

  3. Comparing any college kid, even manning himself back in ’98, to manning is so incredibly premature. I hope this kid pans out though the league is more fun to watch with guys that can elevate their teams under center. We’ve already lost peyton as a playmaker we need young guys that can fill the void these legends will leave, even brady and brees don’t have much time left, and there has been less than a handful of guys since 2000 that can play QB well enough to go down in history.

  4. So he runs slow, can’t jump and may have an injured shoulder. Queue his agent leaking a story about him being Peyton Manning between the ears. Same guy who gets crab legs from the seafood counter and then bypasses the cashier. Pure genious.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now… if it were “only” the crab legs thing…

    But it’s not…

See, there are many with the physical talent to play and excel at pro sports… sadly some of them don’t have the ability to handle the fame, being famous, know how to conduct themselves and I don’t mean they have to be a choir boy but they shouldn’t do the things he has and they should learn to stop once the bright lights are shining on them from previous stupid incidents…

But while he was in trouble for things, other incidents still happened…

Yeah, the kid CAN play ball and play it well…

He might turn out to be good, even really good.

Tis why they’ll talk to him. Some team is going to take a chance on him. Time will tell what happens.

For his sake I hope those he gets with hold him accountable and don’t coddle him the way Dan Snyder has coddled RGIII in Washington…

  6. James accomplished more in college than Peyton Manning did, he has proven he is a winner. His Football IQ was compared to Manning which is a big compliment since Peyton is a true student of the game. I hope he proves the trolls wrong and has a great career on and off the field. He has the talent, mental capability and work ethic to be a star for a long time.

  7. Funny thing is I remember the “same type of hate” with all of the “LAPTOP & SCAM NEWTON” comments. He was a 1 year wonder Blah Blah Blah. Haters are so quick to compare Winston to JaMarcus Russel, WHY? Russel had a substance abuse problem and was lazy/unmotivated, Winston was a 2 SPORT STAR CONSTANTLY IN COMPETITION!!! Can someone, anyone explain to me why that comparison is so often made? Because I KNOW why its made, because they both happen to have melanin in their skin, right? Woo Hoo, how about taking your head out of 1915, its 2015!!!! Haven’t we realized as a NATION that all running/mobile QB’s aren’t black and all pocket QB’s aren’t white!!!! How come nobody mentions a comparison to the 1 person he actually has the most things in common with, Cam Newton. Not in the way that they play the game but in the fact that they both led their teams to UNDEFEATED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AS WELL AS BOTH WON THE HEISMAN as red-shirt Freshman. Both also had some sort of “collegiate baggage”, yet I don’t really see this comparison made on here. I wonder why? Oh probably because Cam Newton basically REWROTE THE ROOKIE RECORD BOOK,(LOL) and that wouldn’t mesh with the insisted logic that Winston will be a bust?

(Turns around on the podium, gives himself a W, Drops the Mic, and awaits JWinston Haters Thumbs Downs……….But thats a Haters Job, A Haters Gotta Hate…

  8. To think many Bucs fans were clamoring for Mariota. That ship has sailed. Its so bad now people are saying the Jets are going to pass on Mariota if he’s there at #6.

  9. Plenty of time to increase his football IQ while at FSU……it’s not like he spent a lot of time in the classroom….

  10. Ryan Fitzpatrick is pretty smart too. Good decision making during a game is completely different than book smarts.

  11. Comparing him with Peyton Manning is pretty high praise

Unfortunately it’s doubtful that Winston will have the opportunity to go up against Rex Grossman in the Super Bowl

  12. Stop. No. Don’t. He needs to work on those first, as a man. As a criminal, he’s at the right place of employment. Like like handing out second, third, fourth chances.

  13. For the longest time I’ve been a Mariota supporter but after his press conference and his combine I hope to Jah that my team selects Winston with the #1 overall pick. He definitely has the “it” factor Mariota is lacking. The dude is a natural leader and is a student of the game.

  14. It’s a total crapshoot except for the Lucks and Peyton’s that come around every 20 years when drafting a QB. It amazes me that hundreds of NFL people spend countless hours studying film, interviewing coaches and players, go to combines and pro days and still can’t get it right over 30% of the time.

Look at all the Jamarcus Russell’s, Blaine Gabberts, Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Manziel, RGIII, Leaf, Couch, Quinn, Carr, etc…

Then look at the guys who fall and are great…Wilson, Brady, Carr last year, Rodgers, Brees, Montana, Moon, Marino, Romo

Nobody really can evaluate this position, just too many variables for things to go wrong

  15. hey bigblu73 winston and cams playing style are nothing alike , 2 totally different players.

winston has ryan leaf written all over him. same style and same hype .

It’s impressive that the people posting here using a variety of goofy names and in some cases unable to spell Peyton Manning’s name seem to know a LOT more about evaluating football talent than the coaches, GM and executives actually in Indianapolis watching the players and talking to them at the combine.

Yes Sir. I thought about it after I hit submit, Florida behind Tebow and then Blinn College but my point was basically a very similar background. Cheers……

  18. The only interesting thing about these reports is speculating on who made them up ahem…….. I mean “leaked” them, and what their motivation was.

Yesterday, I heard that Winston was bombing in interviews, sounding defensive when questioned about incidents in his past and coming off as immature overall. I read this in more than one place. My guess is that these stories were planted by teams hoping he will fall to them.

Now I am hearing these stories about how a QB who thew 19 interceptions this season playing in the ACC of all places is somehow the QB with the highest football IQ in the history of the game.

My guess is that these stories have been made up, err…..leaked by either teams that want Mariota to drop, Jameis Winston’s agent, or Jameis Winston’s mother.

  19. Look at all the Jamarcus Russell’s, Blaine Gabberts, Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Manziel, RGIII, Leaf, Couch, Quinn, Carr,

    ****************************************************************************************************************

Look, I understand the dude has been injured as well as a disappointment the last 2 seasons but, RG3 had ARGUABLY THE GREATEST ROOKIE SEASON OF ALL-TIME!!!!!

Lumping him in with those “NEVER BEENS” is Frankly unrealistic and plain out INACCURATE! Dude still has a career 64% Completion ratio as well as a career 90 QBR, Not hardly as bad as many would make you out to believe. Anywho, otherwise decent post.

  20. Whatever Jameis Winston becomes as an NFL QB will depend on where he ends up. If he has good coaching that encourages him to learn the game and eschew the noise, he has a chance. If he has lousy coaching and gets thrown into the fire before he is ready, he’s toast. If Lovie Smith gets first crack at the kid… It’s game over. Truth be told, the absolute best thing for Winston’s career will be to fall to the second round and run the scout team for a stud quarterback for a full season.

  21. Mariota proved he has more athletic ability. Raw athleticism that cannot be taught. I’m saying this and I started with Winston as my favorite but he keeps falling every time he gets next to Mariota. Winston has arm strength that can’t be trained but let’s hope he has other intangibles that I can’t see like all his football knowledge . To the people saying who buccaneers should take. NEITHER! if they are smart. They have a good capable & YOUNG QB Mike Glennon don’t waste pick on QB you don’t need. Take best Defender available or maybe try to make up for the bust of a 1st round pick Seferian-Jenkins at TE but they should tighten up that D.

Your comment makes me beleive more sand more that the Jameis haters have there head deep in the sand. Leaf had a big arm but wasn’t likeable and had a low football IQ. He also had a bad temper and a drug problem. None of those which winston possesses. That comparisons worse than Jamarcus Russell.

  23. Slow the roll a bit. Mike Freeman’s reputation is one of making up unnamed sources. He was even fired once from the Indy Star for falsifying his resume. He also defends one type of player over another. Maybe he’s telling the truth this time, but don’t invest too heavily.

  24. He’s been a knucklehead in many of his off the field decisions but he’s not the complete idiot that some people believe he is. Many may not know this but he did get a scholarship to Stanford. Regardless of how good of an athlete you are, Stanford does not give scholarships to complete idiots. I’m not claiming he’s a Mensa candidate either because he’s made some STUPID decisions that have jeopardized his freedom, let alone his future in the NFL.

  25. “Freeman also reports that Winston had been compared to Peyton Manning from a football intelligence standpoint…”

I’m sorry … what was the punchline???

  26. Hey, but stick to those Jamarcus Russell and Johnny Manziel comparisons PFT world, lol. Kid’s going to be a stud. All the things us FSU fans told you is not hyperbole. He’s very, very good.

Ryan Leaf was expected to be the next great NFL quarterback alongside Peyton Manning coming out in the 1998 NFL draft, there was no history of drug problems or any acting out. he flamed out after he couldnt handle the pressure. his game and winstons were very similiar, big strong qbs who can stand in the pocket and sling it all over the place.

winston got worse not better in his second season as a starter. couple that with his baggage and add in the pressure like hes never felt and the man may very well crack just like leaf

  28. The QB of a team needs to be a leader of men in good times and bad. Plenty of athletic freaks or football geniuses have come out of the college ranks and failed miserably. I just don’t see this guy elevating to what it takes…

  29. Hmm… compared to Big Bro Manning = Great from September through December — not so much (i.e., can’t get over The Hump) after the New Year lol

Ryan Leaf NEVER lost only 1 game his ENTIRE COLLEGE CAREER
Ryan Leaf NEVER was a 2 Sport Star
Ryan Leaf NEVER was considered a QB Savant

Besides height and alleged arm strength what exactly do they have in common that would make that any different than Ben Roethlisberger, Blake Bortles, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Matt Stafford, Etc… All similar Height/arm strength??

  31. to147,

Yep, guys that people compare to Peyton Manning on the chakboard come out every year. If Mariota had this same report on him, you’d be here saying how he’s a “can’t miss.” This guy makes you take notice amongst elite athletes when he walks in the room. That’s how good he is. I would propose you get your head out of the sand on this one. And the guy saying Ryan Leaf was “the next big thing” must have selective memory as he vaulted up the draft board on the opposite of his football knowledge and intangibles. He had a great Roase Bowl, had a higher “ceiling” physically than Manning, and then got in the conversation. Before late in his junior year, no one had him as anything but a draft prospect. Also, his partying, bad work ethic, and bad attitude were known in college as well. Again, problems that Winston has never had raised about him, just everything colored off of a questionable rape accusation that looks shakier and shakier every time it gets dismissed by another authority figure.

  32. Winston will get his NFL shot and hopefully he matures and stays out of trouble, he has tons of talent but I’m curious as too why there are people on here acting like what he has done in the past isn’t horrible immature behavior. I would be appalled if my own kids ever did the bozo acts he has done.

  33. I saw the panel chit-chat with Jameis and Marcus side by side today. Marcus was rather shy and Winston came across as smooth and self-effacing, really way cool. He said “please don’t run those images of Marcus and me running side by side.” He was funny and witty. He also said he was number one in film study at FSU, even studied during baseball games in the bullpen. I imagine that can be proved. If you didn’t know his background you would think he was a very mature and cool guy. You guys thinking Marcus is a better QB because he is faster and can jump higher, c’mon, that’s a big so what? Kudos to both of them for throwing at the combine, they are putting it right out there and not hiding, not waiting for their scripted pro day. I wish them both a world of luck, and if I had to choose I would go with Winston. He is well prepared, but this Peyton stuff? Peyton was the best prepared QB to hit the NFL in the past 30 years with Luck second. Just pre-draft hype. Stop it already!

  34. Actually, don’t stop with the comparisons with Peyton or Marshall Faulk for the RBs. It is pretty funny to see these professional assessors get wound up and cite unnamed sources. Wish I could used unnamed sources on job applications and the like.

he already acts as if hes untouchable, what happens when he gets all that money? hes clearly immature, money will make it worse.

  36. High football IQ or not…any GM who picks this kid with the 1st pick needs his head examined.

  37. I watched the combine. He did not do that well throwing. For some reason every analyst is hyping him, he isn’t near Marcus as far as talent. Did he showboat and brag when he did throw a good pass? Yes. Did all the analysts talk that crap up? Yes. On the very next bad throw did they pay any attention to that? Nope. They barely uttered a word about Marcus despite being better almost throw for throw and being way more athletic and being a good kid. I don’t get it. I have a feeling this is all a ruse to get a crappy team to draft him too high. Based on talent he’s a 2nd rounder at best. Yeah, he’s cool and hip and his ‘boys’ laugh at his jokes but he is way too risky. He’s a coach killer

Man…..I was rollin’ right along with your entire commentary til you got here!Lol

IJS, how come Winston can’t be every bit the “QB Savant” that PManning was coming out of college? He certainly has the academic acumen(offered an ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP to Stanford, as well as a documented thirst for knowledge and film study. And has been lauded by well respected football minds like “Mooch” as one of, if not the highest football IQ’s they’ve ever encountered. Is it unfathomable that a kid that may be immature in some regards could be totally advanced/mature in another? I don’t think thats beyond reason. People also seem to forget that PManning had a “rape allegation” while he was at Tenn but I know, I know, that’s PManning, right? Lol He never got caught getting the FSU Football player “Crab Leg Hook Up” so I guess he didn’t have to endure the amount of scorn and overall negativity that seems to pervade this young man. I’m not pointing that statement at you, as you have really spoken quite fairly about Winston, its to many of the others that seem to look for any and every reason to cast doubt.

  39. I’ve heard this guy speak. I bet his camp is leaking the report about his intellectual prowess.

Did you really just compare Charlie Ward to Jameis Winston in terms of NFL QB prospects? Lol……Stop man, just stop!!!

I mean you can compare them in terms of both of them being 2 Sport Stars that both went to FSU and won Heisman’s but those are mere coincidences and where the similarities END!!!Lol

Charlie Ward was 6’0-6’1″ with a basketball players physique. Could he make the throws that Winston can make? Hell Naw, (neither can Mariota BTW)

Why did Winston’s stats suffer in his second year? Well maybe he lost this guy that went in the 1st round of the draft, Pick 28 Kelvin Benjamin. Played with mostly Freshman WR’s and still managed to lose only 1 game.

Would Winston really be your first exposure to someone that could be intelligent yet immature?

If so, you should check out Big Bang Theory…….

  41. Haven’t we learned by now to just completely ignore any and all stories leading up to the draft, unless someone goes directly on record, using their actual name?

Because scouts that want players to fall down the draft board, so they can scoop them up, since they’re the players they actually covet, will push negative stories anonymously through the media.

And scouts that want players to be moved up the draft board, leaving the ones they actually want, will push through positive glowing stories in the media.

  42. I watched the combine today. Both were impressive but it depends on what style you like. What I get from Winston and Mariota that interested me is that their games are actually reflected by the opposite guys personality. Winston has a solid fundamental game that is grounded in quiet technique and knowledge as opposed to attention grabbing athleticism. Mariota has a flash game that strikes like lightning and grabs your attention. In a way it’s loud

All the NFL network analysts and Mariucchi seem to agree by the way that Winston is REALLY good a at the board and that his understanding of concepts was great

  43. The more I think about it the more I think Winston will be the first overall. But there are some red flags. That performance against Oregon was plain bad. And his off the field antics.

I have never been a fan of the running back at quarterback which is what Mariota is. Ooooo, he can run fast guys. Better get that guy.

  44. Did anyone notice Rich Eisen interning Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett, during the quarterback drills? Since the Cowboys are set with Romo and Weeden, for the next 5 years, according, to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones . I think Stephen Jones, Garrett and Wil McClay, is operating the Cowboys, and Jerry just write the checks. The question is, why was Garrett, doing at drills, if the Cowboys are set at quarterback, according to Jerry?

  45. It makes me nervous when they just can’t call the kid smart. Why football smart? Plain old smart is an all encompassing term that includes football.

  46. Winston is light years ahead of Mariota. Maybe with time Mariota can catch up. if I have to pick between the 2 I am gambling on Winston to get his act together off the field

As far just throwing the ball Petty looked great

  47. Said the evaluator after his first day on the job:

“I think he’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever interviewed.”

  48. Couldn’t care less about the pre-draft hype or what he did in college surrounded by the top recruits in the country. The dude is a human red flag and has the type of character that will destroy a team and set it back years.

  50. pigskinjunkie66,

Yeah, no way he can be the same guy between the ears in football knowledge as the guy who sat on a female trainer’s head with his bare buttocks. No way.

  51. I’ll just say I’m glad my team isn’t on the clock to turn the franchise around by potentially picking Winston. Even if the “football IQ” report is true, so many other red flags are still flying.

  52. Can someone, anyone explain to me why that comparison is so often made?
How come nobody mentions a comparison to the 1 person he actually has the most things in common with, Cam Newton.
    ———————————————————–
firstly, someone said Vince Young 2.0…..i will get to that later. as for why the comparison is made, it’s because both were black pocket passers. JaMarcus was a pocket passer, he just didnt try hard. i think his passing is great if he tries (and i dont doubt that), what people doubt are more off the field with the police. he reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger.

as for the comparisons with Vince Young and yes, Cam Newton. both to me are off. Vince and Cam were both spread option QBs who are clearly fast, something Winston isn’t. i think Winston can buy time, but Cam’s a much better runner. as for arm talent, Cam’s arm is stronger, what he has issues with is accuracy.
