Jets, Harvin will be talking soon

If the Jets keep receiver Percy Harvin on the roster through March 19, the sixth-round pick they owe the Seahawks will escalate to a fourth-round pick.  Which means that the Jets need to decide, before March 19, whether to keep Harvin around.

Keeping Harvin around under his current contract means paying him $10.5 million for 2015.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jets and Harvin’s agent will be talking soon, with the goal of working out a revised arrangement.

If that revised arrangement entails Harvin taking less than $10.5 million in cash this year, look for Harvin to reject it.  At most, Harvin likely would agree to converting the vast majority of the salary to a signing bonus, allowing the cap hit to be spread over multiple years and reduced in 2015.

While the Jets don’t need to do this, based on a projected cap bulge of more than $50 million even with Harvin’s $10.5 million on the books, it’s a way to make more money available for other players, such as, for example, a possible run at a reunion with Darrelle Revis.

If the Jets and Harvin can’t reach a deal, watch these three teams closely:  the Chargers, Packers, and Patriots.  With any of those, Harvin could do a one-year deal, partner with one of the best quarterbacks in the game, have a huge year, chase a championship, and set himself up for a bigger contract in 2016.

The most intriguing team is the one we’ve mentioned multiple times in recent weeks on PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio and Pro Football Talk on NBCSN:  The Patriots.  As PFT reported back in October, the Seahawks didn’t contact the Patriots about a possible trade for Harvin before dumping him on the Jets.  So it’s unknown whether the Patriots would have been interested in adding Harvin to a receiving corps that could use a guy who can stretch the field.

Given the friendship between Patriots coach Bill Belichick and former Florida coach Urban Meyer, Belichick becomes the ultimate litmus test for determining whether Harvin can be trusted over the course of a full season.  Although Harvin was a model citizen during his extra-large cup of coffee with the Jets, he’s been run out of Minnesota and Seattle for a reason.  If Meyer tells Belichick to stay away, that doesn’t bode well for Harvin’s future prospects.

Still, the possibility that Harvin could make his way to Foxboro could be enough to get the Jets to find a way to keep him around.

  1. How is this guy making almost 11 mill a year? He has NEVER had a 1000 yard season or 10 TDs in one year. He is a constant migraine (pun intended) to any team that employs him. Most overrated wideout, if not player, in the entire league.

  2. If the Seahawks had kept Harvin around under his current contract the biggest selling item in Seattle right now would be a “Three-Pete” t-shirt. Good work getting yourself run out of town Percy. I hope you enjoyed NY. Seattle couldn’t have used you in the Super Bowl for those final 2 three-and-out’s which could have clinched it.

  3. Stretch the field? Per PFF Harvin has 652 yards receiving on passes thrown 20+ yards downfield in 68 games of his career. For comparison, Odell Beckham had 366 yards in 12 games

  4. I don’t see it happening. $$ doesn’t add up if they want to keep revis, mccourty and gostkowski.

    Plus, he seems like too much of a headache.

  5. Harvin just isn’t that good. He’s talented athletically and versitile, but if you look at his resuts, they are barely average.

    I have rarely seen a player be so hyped without the results to back it up.

  6. Packers wouldn’t sign Harvin unless he was incredibly dirt cheap. Ted Thompson puts very high importance on character. And we’ve seen Harvin is quite a few limbs short on the character tree.

  7. Packers? You’re on crack.

    For 9M they’d keep Cobb, who’s a much better receiver than Harvin and every bit as athletic, and without the ‘mystery migraine’ problem.

  8. He certainly fits the mold for the type of WR the Pats like, and they were able to keep Moss under control for a couple years at least.

  9. The Patriots, really? The Pats would offer him the veteran minimum… Just another rotating WR and nothing more. Salary cap means the Pats should worry about lineman (offensive and defensive) and resigning Revis/Gostkowski. Nothing else.

  10. He is a punk. Fights coaches, teammates and isn’t that great because he cannot stay healthy and constantly has migraines like a woman with pms.

  11. His speed is tantalizing but he has never converted it into production on the field and cannot stay healthy. His yards per catch is a paltry 11.5 and in Seattle it was 6.0. He was taking touches away from everyone else including Marshawn and Wilson. It two years in Seattle his only contribution was a big return in the SB. Once Percy left Seattle, the Seahawk offense got rollin’.

  12. It’s one thing to take on a troubled DT like Haynesworth or an RB like Dillon, because if they don’t perform it’s just next man up. But Brady demands so much from his WRs in terms of route running, precision and decision making that it is doubtful Harvin would be willing to to put in the effort to become a difference maker in that offense. It would be the same situation as when they brought in Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson.

  13. Too much headache, let him go where he likes and create problems in the locker room for that team. Patriots are a team where players to go die bc of cheating gates.

  14. Harivn has already said he’s not taking a pay cut and Jets are going to have a tough time landing another big time WR in free agency so it’s best they just keep him.

  15. Harvins beef in both MN and Sea were poor QB’s, (sorry Seattle but you know you aint winning games because Russel is great). So tell me Jets, you got a good QB? Percy is an ornery SOB, trust me.

  16. I think one of the punishments of tampering with a player means you cannot sign the tampered with player.

    Not that I think it will matter, why would Revis ever go back to the jets?

  17. “Still, the possibility that Harvin could make his way to Foxboro could be enough to get the Jets to find a way to keep him around.”

    Horrible way to run your team. Worry about yourself.

  18. i see quite a few thinking he would fit the patriots. obviously they dont follow the patriots. this guy is exactly the type of player bill belichick avoids. hes soft, underproductive, has a name for some reason and wants big $. thats laughable. he would be lost in new england. hes athletic, not smart.

    Troy Brown, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, Julien Edelman.

    Harvin is nothing like these guys, stick to your own team.

  20. Pats won’t touch this cat with a 10 foot pole…

    And comparing Percy to Moss is beyond ridiculous.

    Moss was an athletic freak and the greatest receiver this side of Jerry “Imafraud” Rice.

    Percy is really fast and… (Has cronic PMS) ???

    Moss had a bad attitude b/c most of his career was stuck playing for losers plain and simple. When he hooked up with the Pats & TB12 he lit the league up and was a model citizen… until he wanted to get paid… And the hoody dont play that game.

    Percy was stuck on a loser for while and then lucked out and got traded to Seattle… Coulda been a super star but screwed it up big time (PMS again)

    So see ya in Oakland Percy and remember to bring your Midol cause thats likely your last stop…

  21. Harvin, Vick and CJ2K are all trade bait. If Bowles/Gailey want to get “their guy” (i.e., their own QB — no offense, Geno), then there’s not much choice among the current FAs, so they will need bidding chips to trade up with the T-Bucs, Titans or Jags.

  22. The Patriots won’t be making any new major investments in receivers. They are trying to conserve cap space to get deals done with Revis and McCourty and already have LaFell, Edelman, Amendola, and Dobson under contract. If the Patriots are going to make any new investment in one area, it would be the offensive line.

  23. What I want to know Florio is how many draft picks are the Jets going to have to give the Patriots for tampering with Darrelle Revis, and in what rounds will they be. I also want to know how many millions of dollars they will be fined, and when they will be officially prohibited from making any contract offers to that player for a period of three years as punishment for trying to manipulate another teams roster and salary cap, which is clearly a form of cheating. It’s REVIS-GATE!

  24. Not much that hasn’t already been said, but Harvin has done very little to prove he’s worth that kind of investment.

    I predict he’ll reject the Jet’s offer, get released, and ultimately sign a 1 year deal for $6-7 million, if he’s lucky. Poor production and rumors of being a locker room cancer don’t get teams knocking at your door.

  25. Moss had a bad attitude b/c most of his career was stuck playing for losers plain and simple.
    ______

    His first three years in the league, the Vikings were 36-12 and played in two NFC championship games. Moss had a bad attitude before he was drafted and started having incidents his second year in the league.

  26. For those saying he didn’t have a 1000 yard season, he had 1312 yards from scrimmage in 2011. He plays both RB and WR so that is a better measure.

    That being said…he’s a 4 million dollar guy. Maybe 5 if you really need a punt returner.

  27. Let him play running back already. He would be excellent in a west coast offense catching screens and taking pitches like Charles is used in Kansas city. I wouldn’t make him the bell cow, but splitting carries could help many teams. Atlanta and Carolina come to mind as teams he’d be dangerous on

  28. for all his speed he doesn’t stretch the field. He can be covered out of the backfield by a LB

  29. He’ll be cut after all the big money is gone and be forced to take the best offer on the table. I have a feeling WR will be addressed by the Jets in the draft. Too many holes to fill and FA is deeper in all other positions. That 10 plus mill can be better spent elsewhere.

  30. This sounds like a very strong match w/NE.

    Because Patriots so young….while they spent to cap, they were $30 mill under minimum due to few signing bonuses carrying over.

    They have to spend big…otherwise $$$ are paid to players union.

    Percy could be favorite in Foxboro, and for the 1st time in his career, will have a QB who doesn’t get him killed.

  31. With any of those, Harvin could do a one-year deal, partner with one of the best quarterbacks in the game, have a huge year, chase a championship, and set himself up for a bigger contract in 2016.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    I don’t think so. Harvin cannot run crisp or accurate routes so timing throws are extremely dangerous because he is often 5 yards away from where he should be. Brady nor Rodgers would benefit from having Harvin. Rivers might, just because he is decent at ‘see it, throw it’ and could hit Harvin wherever his rout winds up. Other teams that can do that well are Houston (Mallett) assuming he stays, and Dallas but there are cap issues in big D.
  32. Hey even the Vikings didn’t want him. That’s saying something, because they enjoy taking washed up losers………………………………..
    When is Letroy Guion’s trial?
    ———————————————
    What about Jolly who they allowed back and now they want Guion back. I would say Thompson has a little leniency when it comes to character. Especially for a talent like Harvin.
  34. You know, after everything is said about Harvin, he would be a good fit in Minnesota if he went there as a RB. Vikes will be needing one since Peterson wants out. Since there’s a new HC and what may be a franchise QB, maybe he would be willing to go back. His main problems in Minnesota were Leslie Frasier and Christian Ponder. He’d get at least 20-25 touches a game which is what he wants.
    I’m sure a lot of people will dislike what I am saying and that’s fine. But think about it. I don’t know what his relationship was with Rick Spielman but it may work out.
  35. Some of the Boston homer press are saying the Pats will be interested but only if the Jets release him. The Pats would never take him on his current contract or anything like it. They would want an out clause that makes it easy to cut him with minimal cap hit if he creates problems.
  36. Forget about the Packers signing him, Ted Thompson specifically prefers “home grown” talent drafted by Green Bay and they sure won’t take a chance on big bucks for a WR who can’t stay on the field. Harvin is too big a risk for Tightwad Ted to take a chance on, thank the Packers Gods!!
