Grigson has a bit of a history with the Pats

Getty Images

As the football-following world waits (and wait . . . and waits) for the Second Annual AFC East Ted Wells Report, there’s an interesting wrinkle regarding the genesis of the allegation that the Patriots were deflating footballs.

Last week, Colts G.M. Ryan Grigson admitted that he alerted the league of the team’s suspicions the week prior to the game, contradicting prior reports and explanations from the league that suggested the issue first came up during the AFC title game.  The popular view had been that, unlike his predecessor Bill Polian, Grigson had no specific reason to be suspicious or resentful of the Patriots.

But maybe Grigson did.  He arrived in Indy from Philadelphia, where Grigson worked for the Eagles during a Super Bowl XXXIX loss to New England.  Three years earlier, Grigson worked for the Rams during a Super Bowl XXXVI loss to the Patriots.

So Grigson quite possibly believes the Patriots previously took a pair of Super Bowl rings from him with methods that may have been beyond the realm of the rules.  Though no specific accusations ever were made about Super Bowl XXXIX, the win came during the same window in which former Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney has openly wondered whether a “culture of cheating” existed.  As to Super Bowl XXXVI, many still believe that the Patriots videotaped the St. Louis walk-through practice prior to the game, even though the Boston Herald retracted the report with a front-page story not long after the story first emerged.

Throw in the fact that Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk and future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner continue to have suspicions about that game, and it’s easy to wonder whether Grigson regards the Patriots as a team that took multiple Super Bowl rings from him.

None of that affects whether cheating occurred in this specific case.  But it shows that NFL V.P. of game operations (and former Jets employee) Mike Kensil may not have been the only person with a specific bias against the Patriots, and a specific desire to catch them in the act.

  1. Patriots will be found innocent of any wrongdoing when the Wells report comes out. There will still be those who believe the conspiracy theory that Goodell is covering everything up for New England though.

  2. I get that the Herald retracted that story, but the NFL did 1 of 2 things by destroying those tapes.

    1) They did them a huge favor because there was something REALLY BAD on those tapes.

    2) They did them a huge disservice because those tapes were the only proof the Pats had that they weren’t taping SB practices & walkthroughs.

Which do you think is more likely?

  3. Bill polian does mention cheating in his book the game plan, but more about this alleged dez Bryant video. Deflated footballs are so last season…..

  4. Blah blah blah.
Spygate was real, and it was justly addressed. Wasn’t a huge deal, but cheating is cheating, and the team got hammered for it.
Deflategate may or may not be real, and we’re going to get all the details and evidence soon enough. TBD.

All the Rams whining is just that…whining. It’s not fair to wonder anything it, as it’s just sour grapes. Even if the Patriots DID do something kind of taping, it was common league-wide practice at the time, and not against any explicit and enforced rule, so that’s much ado about nothing.

And the talk of the Panther GM is just an embarrassment. So thanks to one incident that has been blown out of proportion and another that has been judged guilty until maybe proven innocent, now you can just assign “a culture of cheating” and presume more cheating?

Great. Well, now I say Grigson is a cheater. He’s cheated for years and is a huge hypocrite. Don’t ask me for specifics or evidence, but I’m clearly right, because “duh”, because that’s how it works now, apparently.

    So stupid.

  5. It’s better to release information late than never, however this was reported in the Boston Globe last month.

How about an A&E biography on Mike Kensil, the founder of the frame – gate feast?
    .

  6. I am really starting to believe that Grigson and Kensil did this more to try and embarrass the Patriots and shed some negative light over their great season. Grigson is not doing well as GM in Indy squandering 1st round picks and signing guys like Landry to big money contracts so what better way to take the heat off of himself when the Patriots stomp the Colts then to make accusations against them.
    RELEASE THE REPORT!!!

  7. Grigson: It’s me, Bill! Your arch-nemesis! You defeated me on the Rams, you defeated me on the Eagles, you defeated me on the Colts, but soon I will have my–
Belichick: I’m sorry, who are you again?
    Grigson: Arrgghh

  8. Grigson is correct, if the Pats did not cheat, he would have built a dynasty in St. Louis with an easy chance for 4 straight SB wins. Because they lost, the bottom fell out from the Rams and they could not recover. The Eagles were in the same boat, an easy 3 Straight SB wins for sure. Grison lost millions and fame as an excellent GM at both places. If it wasn’t for the Pats cheating at Indianapolis, the SB was their for the raking.

So to ensure the Pats were caught, he made sure his instructions were follow to the letter and deflate the INT ball. If the Pats were using a properly inflated, why the Colts were on their way to Pick-6 Brady at least five times!

Warner and Faulk are correct, they were easily on their way to win 4 Straight SB’s. Alas, the Pats cheated… Hay it was in print, so it must be Gosple! See, they wrote that a NE employee tried to introduce an unapproved ball during that game.

  9. I wonder what the World Champion Patriots are going to do with all those extra picks that used to be the Colts 2015 draft.

    #ohthepossibilities

  10. Something smells fishy and I’m sure Grigson and Kinsel in the words of ladies man Leon phelps, both just ate a FISH SANDWICH.

  11. The “destroyed tapes” were played to all the reporters on a continuous loop while Goodell handed out his excessive punishment. Not sure where the story about no one ever seeing them came from. also Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney’s team was the only team cheating in that SB by having a team full of steroid freaks and they still lost.

  12. Blah blah blah.
Spygate was real, and it was justly addressed. Wasn’t a huge deal, but cheating is cheating, and the team got hammered for it.
    —-
Except Spygate was not cheating. The problem was Bill decided – oh the horror – to follow the letter of the rule which was you can tape as long as the information was not used in game. Which it wasn’t, and the advantage Bill got was that he knew other teams would be gun shy to literally interpret the rule as it was like he did.

And then Goodell decided that the rule meant something different than what it actually said and that’s why they were punished.

  13. Look at all the silly Patriot haters. To think you ACTUALLY believe your team deserves to be on the same field as the World Champions!

Oh you sillies. You’ll learn. 🙂

    —–

You do realize the press got to look at those tapes, right, and there was nothing there? Otherwise they would have had a field day with it. Because, come on. Take a look at how Deflategate went to the press without any proof. How do you think Spygate would have gone if they actually saw what you still think happened?

Not that logic is going to interrupt your conspiracy theory fantasies any.

  15. “former Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney has openly wondered whether a “culture of cheating” existed.”

Yeah because the Panthers didn’t have 3 players suspended for PED use on that team after a Federal investigation into their team wide use of steroids.

But that’s not cheating is it Hurney ?

And of course Grigson is heavily biased against the Pats. Whether it was Grigson or Kensil, one of those 2 guys deflated the one ball that was way under, they one they had on Indy’s sideline for an extended time after the interception.

  16. Don’t cry Patriot haters. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe by 2024 your team will be good enough to compete with the World Champion and NFLs Greatest Dynasty Patriots again.

So all is not lost. 🙂

  17. Its pretty simple really. It all boils down to

    #youhateus
    #causeyouaintus

Look for the Pats to run up the score in Indy next year just for kicks. Pats will be up by 5 TDs with less than a minute to go, and deep in the Colts territory. AND THE GREATEST QB OF ALL TIME, TB12, PASSES INTO THE ENDZONE FOR YET ANOTHER SCORE.

    Its gonna be SWEEEEEEEET.

  18. “I get that the Herald retracted that story, but the NFL did 1 of 2 things by destroying those tapes.”

Or they showed other teams shooting video of the Pats from the same sideline position and the league wanted to limit the so called scandal.

Its well known other teams shot sideline video prior to the ban when it was not illegal. Several coaches have admitted doing so including Jimmy Johnson. Who by the way said he stopped the practice because he felt it was a waste of time and gave no advantage as compared to just charting the plays and signals on a piece of paper. Which if they weren’t shooting video of the other team’s sidelines they were certainly charting the signals and still do for that matter.

And really, the only “advantage” is it maybe makes it marginally easier to collate the data as opposed to charting the signals and plays on paper. It was never the magical telepathic system that the bspn tin foil hat hysteria crowd claims it is.

  19. Never, ever, discount the lengths that some of these team employees and ex-players will go to in the name of “competition.” The Patriots have provided major servings of sour grapes to people in the NFL over the last fifteen-plus years and that resentment, to people of this competitive nature, is beyond what many of us can imagine.

Likewise, can you honestly say that Mike Kensil doesn’t covet the job Goodell currently holds? What better way to show you deserve the commissioner’s job then taking down the team that so many despise.

I think that it’s very likely the NFL is going to be terminating some more employees over the next ten to fourteen days… namely Kensil lackies.

  20. The people who think that the evidence was destroyed because it was a video tape of a walk through are MORONS.

First, if the Patriots were turning over tapes, why the hell would they turn into the league all the evidence of them cheating??? They wouldnt, and they didnt. Think about it. You want to argue they are are devious enough to cheat, but they are just so honest about their cheating that they turned over all the incriminating evidence??? “Cheaters” dont wake up one morning and turn themselves in.

Second, who in their right mind would tape a walk through, use the information on the tape to win a Super Bowl, and then keep the tape hanging around??? I am sure there is probably photos of Belichicks office with a book case full of tapes. And those tapes have riveting titles like “Rams Super Bowl Walk Through”. Give me a break.

None of those ideas make any sense. “Belichick is a genius”, “playing chess when everyone else is playing checkers”, “knows everything that is going on in his organization”, blah blah blah. Those are quotes aften used with Belichick. Ever notice how no one ever says “Belichick is so stupid he kept the incriminating walk through tape and gave it to Goodell”. If the Patriots were up to no good, they didnt give the league any evidence of their shananigans.

  21. Sounds like he wanted to nail the pats for imagined crimes of the past. Can we move on from accusing the Pats of things that did not have a shred of proof. Grigson obviously has an agenda and seems like he might do just about anything to nail the Pats.

  22. The Patriots are guilty of being dumb enough to get caught doing what many teams have done in the past.

So in that regard any extra scrutiny is warranted in some ways and is certainly self inflicted.

The Pats are also guilty of having more success in the last 14 years than the vast majority of NFL franchises have seen in their existence.

The unbelievable landslide of pure unadulterated blind hate that the media and others have unleashed since the deflategate (now non-story) broke is very telling.

    Envy breeds hate.

  23. Has anyone asked him to comment on his team and staff’s performance in the AFC Championship game?

Now that was cheating – they cheated Indy fans and all football fans who were looking forward to watching that game.

Due to Patriot mistakes Indy was still in the game at halftime and then it was apparent the players and coaching staff were quite content to have gotten to where they were and were probably on Travelocity.com making there vacation plans during halftime.

It seemed they wanted nothing to do with being there that whole second half.

I even believe it was Michael Irvin stated after the game he was surprised by the lack of preparation on the part of the Colts in a conference title game.

  24. People have suspicions so they report it. The balls start out in the correct weight range by a pass fail test. Then 11 of the 12 balls a 1/2 game later fail. (who cares if it was just a little, they WERE lite). Suspicions confirmed. So now it’s just sour grapes or science or poor data recording or temperature/barometric air chance or a set up or chain of evidence or media witch hunt or WHAT EVER.
Keep throwing crap at the wall, something might stick, but even if does, that wall sure stinks of crap.

  25. Grigson is a pathetic loser. He initiated all of this and yes he had an axe to grind. If there is any justice he will get caught. What he did is pathetic. if they don’t want to expose the truth they will divert it or minimize everything. They may never admit it was not the Pats but rather the Colts who started deflategate. PATS GOAT

  26. Furthermore…………….they should have asked Grigson about Trent Richardson’s performance in that game. Oh yeah, the guy he gave a first round for was left home.

  27. Grigson insists that he was just “doing his job” by alerting the league to his suspicions.

Grigson might have done his job a little better by maybe bringing in a couple of run-stuffers so the Patriots didn’t embarrass his Colts the exact same way – three times in row – two of them prime time playoff games in front of a national audience.

  28. It is so sad to see the haters debase themselves with innuendo, shoddy logic, and just flat out lies. They don’t want to hear the truth, they are just looking for excuses for their own team’s failures.

They just can’t believe that the Pats have been this good this long, when their teams can’t come close this this kind of sustained excellence. When small minds can’t grasp greatness, they attribute it to “magic” or cheating.

These are the same people who burn books and burn “witches” at the stake. These are the ignorant, the fearful, and the unsatisfied. The sorry assed people who angrily want to destroy everything they can’t understand.

    Just so pathetic

  29. I love how people claim the Spygate tapes were destroyed before anyone could see them…again, this is people who have not actually read up on the facts of what spygate involved, but instead listen to the dumb ex-jocks like Faulk and Cris Carter who have no clue either.

The tapes were running on a continuous loop at the press conference in front of a ton of media when the NFL was announcing their findings.

Jay Glazer says he still has a copy of the tapes on his cell phone and jokes that it mostly pics of cheerleaders than the other team sideline

  30. The unbelievable landslide of pure unadulterated blind hate that the media and others have unleashed since the deflategate (now non-story) broke is very telling.

    Envy breeds hate.

    —-

The bottom line is the Patriots weren’t supposed to do all of this. Big names and big stars are what the NFL is supposed to be all about, not teams and working as a team. QB’s drafted in the 6th round are supposed to suck, not become a 4 time winning SB QB and HOF lock. Great teams like the Greatest Show on Turf are supposed to have their way with teams like the Patriots. And that didn’t exactly happen that way.

Everything many people thought they knew about the sport turned out to be completely wrong.

There will always be resentment that the NFL as many people knew and loved, a league of dynasties, powerhouses, big stars and big names was permanently blown up by the Patriots. As Bill says, it is what it is.

  31. Grigson and Kensil are petty vengeance seeking people and at least one of them is a proven liar to boot. Oh and you can add incompetent to the list of adjectives too since you would think the least they could do would be to agree on what their story was going to be before they got tripped up.
The bottom line on this all the way back to the spygate nonsense is that there is a bus load of losers who can’t stand the thought of the Patriots beating them and continue to look for ways to “get even”.

  32. The credibility of all of the ex jocks and GMS that were bashing the patriots comes into question. They all got beat on a regular basis by the Patriots. The only way they can feel good about themselves is to tear down the patriots. It’s easier to tear down a champion than to put in the hard work and become a champion yourself. I can’t wait for the next Colts game when we are up by 40 and still running up the score at the end.

  33. ok, so new england tapes your walk through, and subsequently has an answer for everything you do in the first half.
how about making some half time adjustments?
    much ado about nothing.

*not a pats fan in any way, shape or form

  34. “There will still be those who believe the conspiracy theory that Goodell is covering everything up for New England though”

I can’t help but laugh at all the crybabies who claim that Goodell loves the Pats.

Yeah right, Goodell loves the Pats. In fact, he loves them so much that he launched a huge investigation of them just as they started preparing for the Super Bowl.

Because obviously, nothing improves team’s focus and helps them prepare for the biggest game of the season than to have league investigators and the media crawling all over them for two weeks.

    Idiots…

  35. “I can’t wait for the next Colts game when we are up by 40 and still running up the score at the end”

That would be awesome. Would love to see the Pats have a big lead and go for a two point conversion or an onside kick.

  36. Let’s not forget that Grigson is the guy who traded a first-round pick for Trent Richardson and who traded Jerry Hughes (20 sacks in the last two years) for Kelvin Sheppard (20 tackels in the last two years).

Grigson ought to be feeling heat. He sucks as a GM.

Is there any wonder that he and Pigano were looking for a way to deflect attention?

  37. THE GLENDALE ADDRESS

Countless scores and thirteen years ago our football gods brought forth in this league a new dynasty, conceived in excellence, and dedicated to the proposition that all players do their job equally.

Now the league is engaged in a great civil war, testing p.s.i. to see whether that dynasty, or any dynasty so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great grid iron and battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who would squander their season in vain that that the dynasty might die here. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this turf. The players, active and injured, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The league will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the fans, rather, to be dedicated to the unfinished play which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here to support the great task remaining before this dynasty–that in this honored team we take increased devotion to that entertainment for which they gave the last full measure of devotion–that we here highly resolve that this team shall not have struggled in vain–that this dynasty, shall have a new birth of excellence–and that domination of this league, by this dynasty and for this dynasty, shall not perish from the turf.

  38. I wonder how Marty Hurney would answer this question:

Which game did they get the signal;s from?

Patriots beat Panthers 32-29 in 2003 Super Bowl (played in 2004)

Games between the 2 teams during Belichick Era:

    2002 Preseason Patriots won 23-3
2001 Regular season Patriots won 38-6
    2001 preseason Patriots won 23-8
    2000 preseason Patriots won 29-21

so, from which of those games do you think the Patriots got illegally taped signals that helped them win the SB? be careful……after that 38-6 beatdown by the Patriots in 2001, the Panthers fired their head coach.

Which leaves you with 2 arguments:
    1. Panthers used the same signals from a preseason game (the previous year) in the SB, or
    2. Panthers used the same signals as the previous coaching staff did, regardless of getting totally trashed on the field

  39. e The more these stories come out and connections are made, the more I believe the Colts Deflated the intercepted BALL. It could have been done for a number of reasons besides the Patriots beating Grigson’s former teams. It could have been done to relax the pressure of an embarrassing loss and a season where all his brilliant moves came to a crashing end. I see a pattern between deflate gate and the Trent Richardson situation. When Grigson’s loses he tends to try and find disingenuous way out. Get humiliated by the Patriots two times in less than 60 days, the balls must be deflated. Get suckered by the Browns for a 1st round Pick for a player who’s salary is guaranteed in 2015, which means even if you cut him your mistake is not erased. Like all big RATS, Grigson suspends him in the attempt to execute a clause in the contract that makes it void. I see a pattern of covering up mistakes and embarrassing beat downs. You add in the mounting contradictions and yes, it’s plausible to believe the Colts deflated the one ball in their possession.

  40. Every fan, every coach and staff member of other teams who have been taken to the wood shed by the Patriots have to come up with a pathetic excuse why their pathetic teams can’t compete with the greatest of all time– did I say pathetic?

  41. “Sounds like another kid that had his milk money stolen by Tom Brady in junior high school.”

I’m a huge fan of TB but there is now way my Tommy Boy stole anything from anyone in middle school. Tall lanky with an unathletic build coming out of college. He was probably the one getting stuffed in the garbage can.

  42. How would Grigson answer this question?

Which game did the Patriots tape signal from?

Pats Beat Eagles in 2004 SB 24-21

previous games between them during Belichick Era

2004 last game of preseason – Patriots won 24-6
    2003 regular season – Patriots won 31-10
    2003 preseason – Patriots won 24-12
    2002 preseason – Patriots won 16-15

so, the argument is that the Patriots won the Super Bowl because the Patriots illegally taped signals from 3 preseason games and one regular season thrashing of the Eagles……which of course would have to assume that the Eagles didn’t change their signals?

    Pretty solid argument there

  43. Damn…..the Patriots are going to absolutely stomp the Colts next season…. Look for the Pats to rush for over 400 yards…

  44. The simplest explanation for Grigson is his intense desire to deflect blame and attention from his own failure as GM to build a strong team around Andre Luck. And Irsay is furious about his team’s losses to the Pats. Trying to embarrass the Pats rather than face scrutiny themselves is all the motivation needed. No need to go back to 2001.

  45. The Washington Post is reporting that Deflategate started with a text to Kravitz that read:

    “Call me now..Very important!!!!”

If, and I say “IF”, that excited text turns out to be from Grigson … well, wouldn’t that be interesting?

  46. Its amazing how Grigson is seemingly under no pressure despite completely failing to put a team around a generational QB like Luck. Mediocre defense, awful offensive line, one above average WR, the worst trade for a running back in recent history.

The Colts are 100% using this nonsense to deflect the attention away from him & Pagano.

  47. I know as a fact that Grigson feels that the Patriots stole 2 rings from him. He feels the same way as Marty Hurney, but even deeper. The man owns 2 homes in Portsmouth, RI. You can look it up on the property tax assessor’s site. He’s been around New England. And you will not believe the name of the street where one of the houses is. Hint: think the name of the town where the Patriots play.

  48. Actually no, nobody thinks the Patriots cheated except a small, hard core of embittered haters that refuse to think anything else and will never admit they are wrong.

Front page of the Washington Post today: “Was DeflateGate nothing more than just a bunch of hot air?”

  49. I’m really getting tired of Eagles and Rams players and coaches whining about losing the Super Bowl. I guess they can’t deal with the fact they were beaten by a BETTER team.

Videotaping was LEGAL back then and EVERY team was doing it. But if the Patriots actually were taping walk throughs, which is laughable, wouldn’t someone from the Eagles or Rams organization have noticed and told them to stop? I mean, to blame videotaping a walk through for the reason you lost the Super Bowl has to be the dumbest thing I’ve heard in my life.

    #ludicrous

Yes, the T-Rich trade has been awful, but you can’t blame him for trading Hughes. He was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE in Indy and would’ve been cut, so at least he got something for him. Hughes benefits greatly from playing with a great front 4 in Buffalo. He will be overpaid and his production will drop drastically if he signs somewhere else this offseason

  51. Actually no, nobody thinks the Patriots cheated except a small, hard core of embittered haters that refuse to think anything else and will never admit they are wrong.

And I hope they stay that way! It’s SO MUCH FUN to get right up in their grills and laugh at them. 🙂

    Patriots haters! Don’t change! 🙂

  52. Grigson and Kensil have been the major sources of leaks, but certain things still make no sense.

The league insists there was no sting, but Grigson clearly alerted the league and Kensil well in advance. If that’s the case, then why did the league wait until halftime to check the PSI of the footballs? Why did Kensil destroy the evidence by reinflating the footballs to 13.5? These guys are like the keystone cops and once again, it’s amateur with Roger Goodell with all of the leaks and that ridiculous Kelly Naqui story that was later refuted by Adam Schefter. I do know that Robert Kraft will be furious with Roger Goodell if the Patriots are fined one dime. He is already upset about the cloud this put over the Patriots week two before the Super Bowl. If that was meant to harm the Patriots, it already has. The damage has been done. No Patriots players, executives, owners, or fans is happy about this.

  53. If Grigson wants to “do his job” then maybe he should try looking around for football players that aren’t soft and don’t fold when the Patriots punch them in the mouth.

  54. If that’s the case, then why did the league wait until halftime to check the PSI of the footballs?

    ——-
The idea that they would risk illegal footballs being played in a conference championship game just so they can play gotcha with the Patriots is mind boggling.

That is reason enough for Kensil to be shown the door, and Goodell following him with his bags packed as well.

  55. Superbowl Champions AND getting to watch this 1st grade skill level sting operation embarrass the NFL and the Colts has made this the ultimate. Whiny fans of other teams who have no idea what they are talking about and only able to spout “They cheated!” is extending this great time like no situation I’ve ever seen. Thank you Ryan Grigson. Thank you Mike Kensil.

Oh and thank you John Harbaugh. The anally sore whining you displayed after being thoroughly outcoached and losing 2 14-point leads to lose to the Patriots in the playoff game before the AFC Championship was priceless.

    Great times.

  56. Don’t you love how the Patriots fans act like they’re the victims. You people need to get a grip on reality. The Reality is the NE Patriots are a black eye on the NFL, they are the only team in NFL history that has their championships questioned and have the reputation of cheating. The reason is simple, the Patriots are CHEATERS!

  57. Looking back I think it’s kinda embarrassing that the Patriots only beat the Colts 45-7. The true gap between the two teams would be something like a score of 80-7.

I can’t believe a soft pansy team like that actually made the AFC Championship game. It’s quite embarrassing actually.

It is rather for us to be here to support the great task remaining before this dynasty–that in this honored team we take increased devotion to that entertainment for which they gave the last full measure of devotion–that we here highly resolve that this team shall not have struggled in vain–that this dynasty, shall have a new birth of excellence–and that domination of this league, by this dynasty and for this dynasty, shall not perish from the turf.”

    Priceless!!!! Thank you.

  59. “so, the argument is that the Patriots won the Super Bowl because the Patriots illegally taped signals from 3 preseason games and one regular season thrashing of the Eagles……which of course would have to assume that the Eagles didn’t change their signals?

    Pretty solid argument there”

Except sideline taping was not illegal in any of those years.

And I believe it was the Eagles that had totally changed their coaching staff as well, so unless the staff of their SB losing team was using the same set of signals the previous coaching staff used, any tapes the Pats had were useless anyway in that respect.

It may have been the Panthers whose staff had the changed over but memory tells me it was the Eagles.

  60. The tragedy that is deflategate ultimately provided some comedy gold. Brunnells crying,
ESPN contradicting their own contradictions over and over, Jerry Rice framing himself,
Kensil, Grigson and Pagano tripping on each others statements, Harbaughs ass kissing.
My personal favorite was when Jerome Bettis on live TV called the Pats “known felons”
If ever there is a poster boy for head trauma in the NFL, the Bus has my vote.

  61. Imagine the stuff that is known about NE and whispered among coaches, players, scouts, front office people but which never gets out to the public.

  62. Goodell might not recover from this one

Whether these guys were framing the Patriots out of jealousy, what can’t be denied is that NFL sources have been leaking false information and half truths to make the Patriots look bad since this story cycle began

We now know those earlier reports were false – and that there are clearly multiple sources in the NFL offices that won’t follow Goodell’s gag rule orders and have an anti-Patriots bias

Good job protecting that shield Roger!

I’ll bet you regret ever making such a big deal out of Spygate in the first place – just because you wanted to deny what everyone knows – that signal calling is routinely filmed and analyzed in the NFL

Thanks to Goodell many fans and even players still think Spygate was a big deal – Goodell has done more to erode trust in the NFL than anyone else

“Except sideline taping was not illegal in any of those years.”

    ——-

well, entire basis of the whole *tainted super bowls* argument is the belief that taping was illegal.

truth is, people that hate the Patriots (or hate Patriots’ success) and people that like to crank Patriots’ fans make claims that are mostly based on speculation, innuendo, and opinion rather than on factual information.

Regarding coaching staffs for Panthers and Eagles during those Super Bowls, I know for fact that Panthers changed staff as I mentioned. I’m not sure about the Eagles…..I’m thinking Andy Reid had been there for several years at that point, and if in fact he had been, it’s entirely possible that he changed staff under him…..seems he did that often.

  64. The main defense to spygate is the rule wasn’t in effect until 2007. The reason the new rule was put into effect was because Belichick was exploiting the previous rule on taping. Its similar to when a business exploits a law and the government adjusts the laws in that industry to prevent those activities in the future.
Also, nobody will ever convince me that the Patriots didn’t tape the Rams practice and Spygate was as trivial as the people in Boston say. Goodell is a lawyer, he knew exactly what he was doing. By punishing the Patriots before reviewing the spygate tape and then burning them later he gave himself an out, plausible deniability if the truth ever came out.

Poor poor Steeler fan. To think you actually come here begging us superior fans of the most superior football team today to acknowledge the fraud that you call a dynasty.

Nope, we will not do that. Us intelligent fans know better. We know that a dynasty gotten by cheating – as admitted by your HOF QB and he even apologized for it – it simply doesn’t count.

You don’t even have your facts correct. The Spygate tapes were destroyed MONTHS before that Super Bowl.

The Spygate Tapes were turned over right after the week 1 game of that season and reviewed by Goodel and other League Officials that same week and was done prior to discipline being handed down.

The Globe had to print a retraction about the walkthrough because there were no power supplies on premise for the Pats cameras, so it was impossible to tape a walkthrough. This was documented by NFL Security Logs. And newspapers don’t print retractions and apologies when there stories are accurate.

But it’s good to know that you can’t be convinced regardless of what the actual evidence says.

    ——————————————————–

Which is why Belichick made a point of reminding reporters what Spygate was – the Patriots filming something from the sideline that the other team (or sometimes TEAMS) are filming from other locations in the stadium – not to mention the television feed and the 80,000 people in the stands

But the Patriots haters can’t accept that – because that would mean they can’t assert that breaking a new 2006 rule in 2007 doesn’t invalidate 2001-2004 Super Bowls (oh wait, that still doesn’t make any sense!)

    Apparently some fans never wondered

  71. whitetrash69

so in other words, the Patriots are guilty of cheating in 2001, 2003, and 2004 because (in your opinion) they violated a rule that went into affect in 2007.

wow. that says more about you than it does the Patriots.

by the way, that rule that went into affect in 2007 does not restrict taping signals, it specifies restrictions on locations filming can occur. they could have been filming cheerleaders and it would have broken the rule. but they could still film signals, and there were legal locations from where that can be done.

you’re entitled to your opinion, but don’t assume that just because you believe it that it is a fact

Just run your mouth like I do. Remind them that their team blows. Which it does. Remind them that the Patriots are the NFL’s greatest dynasty, winners of more titles than any other NFL team in the last third of a century. Which they are and which they have.

And watch them try desperately to hide their seething rage that the Super Bowl didn’t go their way and now it seems DeflateGate isn’t either. I mean… a smart football fan would never want any Super Bowls to be tainted in anyway. The fact they would LOVE it if there was… that tells you all you need to know.

Especially with the lyrics “We’ll keep on fighting Till the end” part. How fitting is that? 🙂 Easy to see why Bill raved about this team. He knew much earlier than we did that it would turn out to be a special team…

  88. Its similar to when a business exploits a law and the government adjusts the laws in that industry to prevent those activities in the future.
    ===
It’s still not illegal before the law changes. You can’t (in the United States) make a law apply retroactive. That’s an ex post facto, and is explicitly prohibited by the US Constitution.

  89. this offseason the NFL will make new rules on ineligible receivers, and then Patriots haters will claim that the Pats broke that rule during the 2014-15 season.

  90. paulrevereshorse1775 says: Feb 25, 2015 4:34 PM

Definitely fitting….a lot of mental toughness on this team.

    No question that there is.

And it’s clear now what “On to Cincinnati” really meant. It wasn’t just “Let’s leave this bad Chiefs loss behind us and focus on the next game”.

It was also Bill’s subtle message that nobody at the time recognized, and it was “Don’t worry! This team will be fine. Trust me!”

  91. “Imagine the stuff that is known about NE and whispered among coaches, players, scouts, front office people but which never gets out to the public.”

    ==================================

This is what boggles the football mind. Since the year 2000, the year the evil one took the reins, there have been countless numbers of players, coaches, assistants, front office people, medical staff, etc, etc, who have come and gone from the Patriots. Yet not one,,,,, ONE,, has anything to say,, to offer up a some story to the media?
c’mon man, nobody keeps secrets anymore; especially when one can get any kind of gratification (money, fame, revenge…) for any kind gossip

  92. It’s rare that a story gets more confusing as time goes by.

I don’t think the NFL has a clue what to do with this.

  93. “… Also, the Rams walkthrough story was never proven false, that’s another fact. The story was retracted but never desproven.”
    ================================

    this logic…. scares me.

  94. Weasel Nation(can not be patriots–they will be stripped of that name) also 1st round pick given to the Colts! They so deserve their fans, they do not care if they cheat. Cheat on!

  95. Impossible to get tired of the “they filmed the Rams walkthrough” people. “It was never desproven”, etc.
If you know the facts, I know-no interest there-Patriots cheated conspiracy has nothing to do with that, you know where that came from.

John Tamase, a reporter for the Boston Herald made it up to garner attention and recognition for himself. It worked like a charm. Patriots haters nationally jumped on it like it was written by a nobel prize winner. It was all a complete lie which he was forced to admit to and the retraction was published on the front page.

We all know that doesn’t matter. Going on a decade later, Patriots haters will quote that the Patriots filmed the Rams walkthrough like it’s factual information. Pathetic, but goes perfectly with what deflategate has been all along.

  96. I’ve always thought ‘Spygate’ was a sensationalistic term for what happened. Spying seems to infer at least an attempt to be inconspicuous, yet the guy was walking around in the open. There was even video of the cameraman filming.

Of course, he could have been a Jets’ double agent.

  97. So how come there wasn’t a meeting of the teams and officials at the beginning of the AFC Championship Game in order to warn both the Patriots and Colts about correctly inflated balls? Because that would have blown Kensil’s scam to try to plant framed ‘evidence’ on the Pats on the field via a part time ball boy while his partner in crime from NFL headquarters steals game balls and sells them for personal profit. If Goodell has any integrity and/or administrative competence, he should be screaming about the house of horrors in HIS own HQ. No confidence in the guy til that happens.

  98. I don’t understand what all these updates are for. Everyone has made up their collective minds already.

Ted Wells could have a press conference tomorrow and say, “The Patriots did absolutely nothing wrong. This was the most blatant sting operation I’ve ever seen. The Colts deflated the intercepted ball because they hate the Patriots and all their success. I’ve talked to commissioner Goodell and we have decided to ban the Colts for two years because of this awful act. The Colts should be ashamed of themselves.”

You’d still have a million people saying things like “Patriots cheat again. Another cover up. Goodell loves the Pats. Kraft pays off Goodell again.”

People will believe whatever helps them sleep at night.

  99. Harbough is not unlike a guy that steps onto a packed elevator on the ground floor of a 30-story building, then farts just before getting off at the second floor

  100. Rake all the leaves back and there are the cheating patriots. Both the nfl and the patriots are a disgrace to football period.
Goodell covered for the pats before and will do it again.
Pats fans who think spygate was overrated are pathetic. Your team used the spygate system to steal 3 Super Bowl and don’t repeat the pats fan myth “they only cheated for 1 game!”.
The rule before the clarification says you cannot video from the field, the pats videoed from the field that is why both walsh and Estrella were given fake credentials during the years before 2007 because the pats knew they were breaking rules and if you believe Belichick only “misinterpreted the rule” you are a fool.
A disgraceful league with a disgraceful champ. They deserve each other.

  101. Let’s face it – there is nothing in the Wells report that indicts the Patriots. If there were, we would know about it already, since the NFL would be giving all the pitchfork-and-torch wielding NFL fans (outside of New England) exactly what they’re clamoring for.

More than likely the report is either mildly embarrassing to the NFL because of their sheer incompetence in how they have handled the situation (at best), or it includes the discovery of a conspiracy that goes all the way up the league offices (at worst).

I expect that the report will finally be released at a time in which the NFL thinks that fans aren’t paying close attention and that it will be quickly dismissed by the media. In other words, when there is a larger news story to keep it off the front pages.

  102. For the last time– (attn: delusional, angry football fans)– you cannot STEAL your way to the continual success the Patriots have had. You just can’t. It doesn’t work that way. Whether you like them or not, it is undeniable that discipline, team before SELF (what a concept! Every NFL loudmouth–take note!), coached-up depth, and flexibility in players mastering multiple positions through PRACTICE has culminated in Super Bowl runs almost every year for 15 years. Belichick and Co. have simply built a better mouse trap than your teams have, and the Patriots mastering the cap and stockpiling mid-round picks has allowed them to retain who they need to over the years. They do not get upside-down financially and blow up their business plan for ANYBODY. You’ll go before the plan goes. I’ve seen it a hundred times. It’s as obvious as the nose on your collective faces how they’ve REALLY built this thing to last–they’ve simply stayed true to the PLAN, without fail, and without prejudice.

The Patriots don’t draft and teach their players by any template other than their own. EVERY player who leaves admits as much when they eventually land in lesser spots, and after they’ve had time for a retrospective look at things–revering the habits of a winning organization vs. lamenting one with no direction. They left for the payday, and the grass was predictably not greener when they joined the ranks of mediocrity somewhere else. They end up wishing they never did in the first place, and frequently talk of the many instances where things occurred at the new place that would never happen or be allowed in Foxboro.

I know, I know–having Brady helps a whole lot too. That is why it is so moronic and lazy to sum up their historic run with “asterisks and cheater” comments. It had nothing do do with it and furthermore, you know it. Really, you’re better than that. It only diminishes you as bitter and labels you as incapable of ACCEPTING what you’ve truly been witnessing–sustained greatness with the best architect/QB combination there is.

You know, I hated the Yankees growing up, but if you hooked me up to a lie-detector, I wouldn’t like it, and I’d have had been forced to admit–“Hey, what can I say? They’re the best.” That’s the equivalent of a breakthrough in anyone’s sports-watching life. You can get there too…and I’m pulling for you.

  103. Let’s look at Grigson’s photo in this article. He looks disgusted, angry, full of hatred and about ready to start smashing something. And why? Because LIFE has cheated him not the Patriots. He should have been the one to win all those championships! He deserved it not them! He was the one who worked day and night! Hour after hour! And what did he get for all his hard work? Having to watch someone else take it away from him! Oh somehow or another, some way or another he will pay them back for taking away what belonged to him! Like Captain Ahab in the book Moby Dick. He will follow that whale Moby Dick ( the Patriots) around forever until he kills it or as it happened in the story it kills him.

    ——

Okay, I’ll bite. Which game do you think they got the signals from?

Pats Beat Eagles in 2004 SB 24-21

previous games between them during Belichick Era

2004 last game of preseason – Patriots won 24-6
    2003 regular season – Patriots won 31-10
    2003 preseason – Patriots won 24-12
    2002 preseason – Patriots won 16-15

so your argument is that the Patriots won the Super Bowl because the Patriots illegally taped signals from 3 preseason games and one regular season thrashing of the Eagles……which of course would have to assume that the Eagles didn’t change their signals?

  105. jaysmack – maybe I’ll give you a pass on the Philly game.

Instead let’s take a look at the 2003 SB win over the Panthers 32-29

  106. Let’s face it, if it were that simple to cheat your way to multiple Superbowls, you mean to to tell me that ONE team in the history of the league has unimaginably been able to get away with it for 15 YEARS, and miraculously, no one was able to duplicate it before, or since professional football began? C’mon!

I know all the addle-brained mouth-breathers out there will grunt their hater mantras (wishes), but for the rest of you who are able to actually use reason, all I can say is, resist the urge to let emotion cloud what you have observed on the playing field. It’s ok to tip your cap to great teams and hope for yours to get there too.

  107. Noticed this thread has 95% Patriot fans. Pretty obvious. Justifying, denying, or “sour grapes” quote over and over. I’d hate it if my team was caught and/or rightfully suspected of cheating. Glad im not. By the way, not a Patriot hater but I have my suspicions from Rams Sbowl. It was by far the oddest game I’ve ever witnessed that left me feeling something was fishy. When the ’07 taping happened, that was a “I knew it”. It was a gut feeling and I was right. Also, want to congratulate the Patriots for a great Super Bowl win. A honest and well played game and they deserve title. As for deflations, well, maybe another asterisk will be placed for the feeling they need to cheat, even by 2lbs in ball pressure, rules are rules, but as far as the Super Bowl win itself, I can’t take that away from them. Ugh, couldn’t live with Seattle as champs again. Thank goodness.
