Judge sides with Adrian Peterson

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has won a major victory in the courtroom of Judge David Doty.

Doty ruled today in Peterson’s favor on his appeal of the suspension that he was handed after Peterson pleaded no contest to reckless assault on his son. Peterson and the NFL Players Association argued that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was wrong to apply a new policy to Peterson for an act he committed before that policy was put into place. Judge Doty agreed.

That means Peterson has taken a major step toward being reinstated to the Vikings, although it’s unclear whether he’ll play for the Vikings, get traded to another team or get released. It’s also unclear whether the NFL will exercise its right to appeal Doty’s ruling.

Peterson has indicated that he does want to play this year, but there are multiple reports that he wants to go elsewhere because he feels the Vikings did not support him. The Vikings have said they expect Peterson to play for them this year.

  1. I’m really happy about this because the Vikings were the ones being punished the most with that arbitrary suspension date. Now Zimmer and Adrian can talk to each other to see if something can be worked out and Spielman can get some real traction going on making a trade. If it comes down to a trade, the Vikings will be able to maximize their return now that the suspension is lifted.

  2. See you bye, its TB’s team AP cant catch or block his #’s have been par with all the good RB’s in the league outside of one year. Vikes need to move on take his cap # build the defense threw FA and draft protection and offense.

  3. Well this will make FA alot more interesting. Should be great to watch how the Vikings handle this.
Glad Goodell got called out too. Can’t make new rules after the fact even if the guy is a scumbag.

  4. Shocking Doty sides with the player — but it was the right call, for him to still suspended was ridiculous.

Now, find a trade partner and send him on his way — both sides will be better off without this relationship.

  5. He doesn’t want to return to Minnesota though. The players supported him, the front office felt they had their hands tied with that situation. They show support they lose sponsors.

Maybe his representative was right. He will never play in that town again.

  6. Regardless what we think of Peterson’s actions, Goodell once again made another WRONG decision. Once again, it will fall on deaf ears but he should be out of a job.
Rarely do we see someone screw up so much and still reign at the top. I guess he makes the teams a lot of money so he gets to stay.

  7. Better still let’s see if Peterson can sue the NFL and Goodall. An apology from Goodall is required I think.

  8. Does Judge Doty’s ruling include Greg Hardy? Since his alleged incident occurred prior to the new policy as well.

  9. The Volcano is gonna erupt in MN and Texas now. At least it will soon be over. Yet another deserved kick to Goodell’s nether-regions.

  10. Isn’t he a massive cap number now? Are teams really going to give up something to take that on? Nobody will wan thtat kind of publicity. So he is going to get cut, nobody will claim him. Then he will sue the NFL because nobody will pick him up.

  11. Boom, I don’t agree at all with how AP disciplined his son, frankly i think its barbaric, however the NFL screwed AP over in suspending him for the entire season!

  12. Did Doty merely rule the NFL couldn’t apply its new policy retroactively? Or did he go further and rule that paid suspensions are still discipline and bar further punishment?

In any event, Greg Hardy must have a smile on his face today.

  13. AP, come to New England. Sign up for the Revis plan, come and win.

Would be ok with losing both Vereen and Ridley to FA if this was a possibility.

AP, Blount, Gray, Bolden, Gaffney, loaded.

  14. If Roger Goodell had a real man for a dad like AP instead of his patrician US Senator father, maybe he wouldn’t be so childish. Roger Goodell must go. Roger Goodell must go. Roger Goodell must go. Stop the morality police, hypocrite.

  15. Remember what New England did after spygate? Got the best WR in the game, Randy Moss and went to work on the rest of the league. Maybe deflategate triggers another bold move by Belichick to bring in the best RB in the game. It would only help prolong Brady’s career. Far fetched, I know. But wow that would be great.

  16. The Commissioner is such a tool. He and Jerry Jones should get together and star in “Dumb and Dumber III.”

  17. dallas should just trade murray for AP

    win/win for both teams.

either that or sign-and-trade murray to some RB hungry team with cap space.

the writing’s on the wall the greatest Viking player ever is leaving due to a lack of support and a venomous front office

  18. Now it’s time for Rick Spielman to get out his top hat, his cape, and his magic wand and turn another disgruntled player who is demanding a trade into a king’s ransom of draft picks.

And if a trading partner can’t be found who is willing to part with at least their first round pick and some change, I’m happy to let Adrian come back and play for his current contract or else sit out the season. Somehow I think he’ll come around once he sees the Vikings aren’t going to give him away for nothing.

  19. He was never punished for the accusation. Not sure if I approve or not. Thost saying he was punished with his paid vacation are out of their minds.

  20. This was an obvious no-brainer of a decision, I hope Peterson sues the NFL and Goodell. I am not condoning AP’s actions but I can’t believe the NFL punished him per a new league policy that wasn’t in effect at the time of his actions. Funny how it seems everyone in the NFL has known about Dez Bryant’s actions from 4 yrs ago (plus all his other transgressions) but yet not a word from Goodell, much less a suspension. Congrats AP and whatever team you play for this coming year, here’s hoping you do tear it up!!!

  21. AP is still under contract. If the Vikings want to play him, he’ll be on the field wearing purple. There’s a lot of noise about what AP wants but my guess is he knows no one else will pay him $12 mil + to run the ball next year.

  22. This changes everything.

While I don’t think other teams would take on such a high salary, the Vikings can afford to pay it. I wouldn’t trade him for less than a 1 and a 2. He is still the best RB in the league. And with Teddy and possibly a WR at the 11 pick, those two kids can really improve with a RB like AP in the backfield.

You don’t think the Vikings would want Teddy throwing to Parker with 9 men in the box defending AP?

  23. If he is traded, it will not be to Dallas. Do you think Minnesota would be dumb enough to hand over an eventual hall of fame, AGAIN!! If he is traded, no matter of the players and draft picks, he will be traded to the AFC or a team rebuilding.

  24. trefkennedy says:

    Bring him to Dallas
    ========================================

He’s not wanted or needed in Dallas. I agree with Nike. He switched the child’s scrotum.

  25. Before the MN fans dream of the high draft picks they will get in a trade, research his age, his current salary and how many years are left on it.

Then look at the other younger cheaper options out there.

Then look at the number of times having AP on your team got you to the SB or even deep in the playoffs.

None of this says he is not one of the all time greats.
But having an all time great RB does not equate to playoff success. (Lynch is great but he is not AP, Sanders or Walter)

MN is not going to see a boatload of draft picks offered.

    —————–

My only question is sues them for what? He hasn’t lost any money, his suspension (the one in question here) was for the upcoming season (so he didn’t muiss any games), he is not a FA.

I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but I’m not sure there is any suit here (says Ray Lewis)

  27. Stupid for whoopin his kid in that way but he will slide down the evolution food chain if he walks away from the money that the Vikings are paying him. You already lost 4 million and a season so now walk away from 13? Mamma always said….

  28. Glad that happened. Now the Vikings can talk to AP and either keep him or trade him. I’d be fine trading him to Dallas for their #1 draft pick, but anything less no way.

  29. He has no grounds to sue the NFL over this. He was being paid while out and the courts have already determined that is not considered punishment.

What would he sue for? He lost nothing other than playing time which actually prolonged his career and made him more money in the long run.

Keep in mind we are discussing a guy who beat the living daylights out of a defenseless four-year-old to show him that violence was wrong.

Keep in mind we are discussing a guy who beat the four-year-old for 20 minutes leaving lashes and drawing blood on his genitals.

The mother of that child should sue AP. Take his child support and never have anything to do with him again.

That’s not discipline that is sadism.

  30. AP’s lawyers are salivating at the thought of suing the NFL. This was a bad call all around by Roger Gotohell.

Good analysis. I think sitting out the year is the only option that absolutely doesn’t happen. I think it’s more likely he plays for Vikings for at least 1 year to build up his trade value. But then again, I didn’t think the Vikings would get three draft picks for Percy, including a #1.

I’d rather have him play. But I’d take several top draft picks for him if it comes to that.

  32. Vikings fan here – I’ll just start with they should’ve traded him the offseason after he ran for 2000 yards. His stock was and never will be higher.

Secondly, I’m in the camp that thinks Peterson has played his last game in Minnesota. I say that not because he disciplined his child the way he saw fit (I found out a long time ago not to look to these guys as remodels (I’m a Kobe Bryant fan). They are here strictly to entertain me.), but because you cannot wrap $12.75 million in a RB. His wife doesn’t want to be there and chicks have every man by the balls (remember you buddies in college who couldn’t go out for Tuesday night beers cause the wife/gf would get pissed?). This whole situation with his agent does not help the situation at all. He has a boner for playing for Dallas.

I think they have 2 options. They can try to trade him but I don’t think that’ll happen. On top of APs contract being scary by itself, Vikings will ask for hefty trade pick compensation. All of that combined with scare off potential suitors. The 2nd option, and what I think happens, is he will be released. The Vikings can use the extra money to sure up several other positions more important then RB. This is a passing/defense/rushing/special teams league, in that order.

  33. AP behind the best OL in football and getting better. 2300 yards rushing and SB. Not a fair contest. They will roll 44 on the overrated Hawks defense next year, without breaking a sweat.

  34. Some comments on the comments

    1. Just how many times does Roger Goodell get to screw up before someone notices that ‘the emperor has no clothes”

    2. Those who defend Goodell with the claim he made the owners a lot of money, forget that it was Bob Kraft and Rooney who led the TV committee that did that deal, not Goodell. And it was Bob Kraft that saved Goodell again with the new CBA.

    3. The league could do a lot worse if they fired Goodell and handed the reins over to Kraft, Rooney, or Mara. Those guys are men.

    4. AP could be this decade’s Corey Dillon, but he’d have to be willing to play for less than half of what he makes now, and we all know “that ain’t happenin’ “.

    5. Personally I hope he mends fences and goes back to the Vikes

  35. Upon hearing this, Roger Goodell locked himself in his office and told his secretary to turn off all lights in the building and to hold all calls until the 2015 Draft.

  36. If by some miracle the Vikings found a trade partner, it would be to an AFC team only. The Vikings won’t cut him either. He will either hold out and not collect a paycheck. or take less and stay in MN, those are his options. Period.

    —————————————–

Again, on what grounds can he sue the NFL?

  38. Trade him to Jacksonville. If you don’t want to play here Adrian, then leave. I don’t want someone who feels they were “wronged” and then refused to elaborate. #loser

  39. I don’t feel that people who are charged (and eventually convicted)with domestic abuse deserve the support of their employers. If it was you or me, we’d lose our job and our benefits and probably all severance.

  40. I would sue the HECK out of the NFL. A year away from the game hurt, it doesn’t matter if he was being paid. It’s not like a janitor or a policeman who can do this for 20 more years – he might not be able to play 3 more years. I’d sue because this was detrimental to his attempt to real Emmitt Smith’s rushing record – which he will likely never be able to reach now – and that could be a valid claim right there. The NFL’s actions took a year of playing away from me – not an injury, but the NFL’s direct actions. And because of those actions makes it nearly impossible for me to reach my lifelong dream of being the NFL’s All Time Rushing Leader. I’d sue for $50 MILLION. He was on target to reach the mark and now he has illegally had a year taken away from him not due to injury or performance.

  41. Roger Goodell is worse than Pharaoh. How many more of his decisions does a court need to overturn before he realizes that he needs to stay out of the discipline process?

That’s like saying you wouldn’t want Barry Sanders because he couldn’t get the Lions to the playoffs or the SB.

It’s the QB man!! And now the Vikings have one. Bad news Packer fans….AP is coming to town, and he isn’t bringing Ponder or Webb with him!!

  43. frankfortschooldropout says:

lol at 1st round pick. 2nd rounder is way too expensive. 1/3 of the league couldn’t squeeze him into their cap.

    4th this year, 2016 5th, max for a 30 year old.
    ————————
It only takes 1 team, and you just said that at least 11 teams have the cap room. I’d rather keep him, but they said the same thing about Percy. “You can’t get a #1 for him when everybody knows the Vikings want to trade him!”

It doesn’t matter that AP is 30. He isn’t a journeyman RB. He is the best RB since Barry Sanders.

  44. Free AP!!! Now Spielman has the authority to do just that. Cut him loose along with his 13 million dollar salary. He has already stated he does not want to play for Minnesota.

It’s been covered so many times before. It was a misdemeanor, and no, 99% of employers wouldn’t have fired him. Teacher. Police. That’s about it. And carrying a football isn’t close to those positions.

    —————
Two sides agreeing? Wouldn’t that be the opposite of a “schism”? Not that you’re right about your assessment…

  47. The NFL should just apply the two game suspension (paychecks) that would be consistent with the prior policy, reinstate him, and move on with league business. Appealing would just be more bad PR for the league. In other words, they will appeal it and fight AP to the death.

  48. If one reads the decision, it is clear that the NFL NEVER had a leg to stand in by applying the new conduct policy.
It was a ridiculous position from the start.

  49. He is a one dimensional back,coming off two declining years,one where he had 21 carries,inactive for over a year,hitting thirty,carrying baggage,with a huge salary..he will be a viking

  50. He should see it ap’s way, I’m not even a vikings fans but he really got the raw end of the deal on this one. I support disciplining your children with that said… HIS child swore at another relative and got whacked a few times by HIS father. I bet that would teach his kid to do that again, it was a life lesson for his son. The system wants your kids to act Rachet and if you touch them you get nailed to the wall it’s bologna

  51. Adrian Peterson will NOT be traded or released.

Simply put, the Vikes are going to pay him ala Jared Allen his last year (which we paid over 15 million).

The Vikes don’t have a QB they need to pay right now, and they won’t have to pay Bridgey for3 years.

Hmmm, Adrian Peterson’s contract is done in 3 years…..go figure!

Peterson will play out his contract in Minny.

All of you that talk about it being “unrealistic’ to pay a RB that kinda money have NEVER HAD ADRIAN PETERSONon their team.

Yes, he is WORTH that money…..go ask the packers how he destroys them!

  52. What people don’t seem to understand that despite Peterson being the best back in the NFL, no team with any logical sense will pay a RB 14 million dollars, so he wont’ be playing for the Vikings, nor will he be traded.

He’s going to hit the open market and still get a nice deal, but something where he doesn’t have that monumental cap hit. Guessing Dallas gets him for 3/30 with 15M guaranteed or something and Murray goes to the Bills?

Is Lynch a one dimensional back? Because AP’s receiving numbers are very close to what Lynch’s are.

Also, AP’s “declining” years are still better for yards per carry than Lynch’s career average. I’m just using Lynch as an example since he is widely regarded as one of the best RB’s in the game.

So, I hope he is a Viking. Because this “declining” RB is still the best RB in the NFL.

    ——————————–

Have you no shame? I want the Pats to win but not at any cost. Peterson is a disgrace. He beat a 4 year old boy so badly that the kids scrotum was bleeding. Hopefully Kraft and BB want nothing to do with this POC.

  55. Adrian beats his kid enough the courts pursued charges against.
The NFL took him off the field, WITH pay.
Adrian settles with the courts for reduced charges. (his act still happened)
The NFL suspends him for the remainder of the year.

How exactly did the Vikes not support this guy? They flip flopped with him, they were gonna let him play and let things be, but they faced a ton of blow back so they changed their minds.

It feels like the husband who beats his wife, then is mad at her when he gets arrested and faces time.

Adrian, you deserved to be off the field last year, the Vikes supported you just fine. Get over yourself.

  56. You people make me sick. AP to Dallas is impossible this year. Dallas can’t afford Murray they definitely can’t afford Peterson! Plus with no contract to trade, you can’t trade Murray anyway! Stop talking about Peterson in Dallas. That’s a dream this year and that is all it will be. Start talking about this when Petersons contract is up after next year.

  57. For everyone who is not a Vikings fan saying you want AP to come to your team…

…We might be able to arrange that! First let me ask you a quick question, how prepared are you to get absolutely fleeced?

  58. What people are not seeing is that he hasn’t been reinstated just yet and the NFL may appeal. Once he’s reinstated then all of these discussions can go on.

Once he is reinstated ,let him go elsewhere under a restructured contact. Try to get him traded to a team with an early pick in the draft. In any case I think both sides would be better off with a fresh start. If he happens to remain a Viking I will support him like I do any other player. However, it will take a lot of work for him to win back my admiration.

  59. Would rather have a great (and high character) runner like Murray than AP. All saying Dallas will trade for AP are just football simpletons. If Dallas cannot afford Murray how can they afford AP??? Makes no sense people.

  60. He still beat up his little boy, and who can forget that. He doesn’t get any leeway with me. Just get on a play football and try and behave for a change. It’s getting boring with all this behaviour from some of these players. They make way too much money, and don’t have a brain in their head.

First, how is that going to happen when the Vikings don’t release AP before free agency? Will the Cowboys let Murray walk and “hope” the Vikings are going to release AP?

Second, the Cowboys can pay Romo $27.7 mil against the cap, and AP $10 mil against the cap, for a total of $37.7 mil, but the Vikings can’t pay AP $15 mil and Teddy $1.5 mil, for a total of $16.5 million? Is that what I am to believe? Because “you can’t” pay a RB that much? Well, you sure can when your QB isn’t eating up 30% of your cap number!

    Except maybe the Colts

  64. Peterson is not done being punished. He will have to face a lot of angry defenders. They will probably have it in for him and perhaps intentionally try to injure him. Probably in the knees. I as a Peterson fan hops this does not happen……
