Vince Young scheduled to work out at new veteran combine

AP

Michael Sam’s not going to be the only curiosity at the NFL’s first veteran combine on March 22.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, former first-round quarterback Vince Young will be there taking part as well.

Young had allegedly retired, and taken a job at the University of Texas, but he apparently has the itch to play again.

He’s been out of the league since being cut by the Browns last offseason (roll that around in your head for a moment), saying at the time his retirement was “definitely official, I think in my book.”

Young made a pair of Pro Bowls with the Titans, but also floundered through stints with the Eagles, Bills and Packers as well.

This veteran combine idea is good for the players who have come back from injuries or were otherwise marginalized and out of the league. It also provides some needed inventory for the league’s own television network during an otherwise slow time of the year.

  1. Young made a pair of Pro Bowls with the Titans

    —————————————–

As a Titans fan I can say those probowls were NOT earned. He was only chosen after the first 6-7 AFC QBs that were chosen decided not to participate. Sadly, his rookie season was probably his best season. And it wasn’t that good. His career average for pass yards per game is less than 150. Dude sucked, & was a head case to boot. Just stay in Texas man, this is just sad.

  2. These things are clearly going to be a media goldmine. I bet the league releases all sort of bad news in the background while all the reporters are off watching Vince Young try to lace up his cleats without losing a finger.

  3. You mean this Vince Young??

    Buffalo Bills

Young signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills on May 11, 2012. The Bills released him on August 27, 2012.

    Green Bay Packers

On August 6, 2013, Young signed a one-year contract with the Green Bay Packers. He was released on August 31, 2013.

    Cleveland Browns

On May 1, 2014, Young signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. He was released on May 12, 2014.

  4. I remember watching that Packers preseason game where he got more snaps than he had gotten in years. He actually looked pretty good. so was a bit shocked when the Pack cut him a few days later.

  5. He was better than anyone the Browns had, they can’t even get releasing the right quarterback right.

  6. His absolute best stat is his record – 31-19.

    How crazy is that?

If you took away his record you’d think you were looking at Jamarcus Russell stats. Dude had 51 int’s and fumbled 40 times in his career…my god! How did he win that much!?

  7. I don’t get why some guys like Tebow, Vince Young, and Brady Quinn would rather not play at all than play on the Canadian League. It’s an almost guaranteed roster spot, good chance of starting, and a chance to generate some tape and get your groove back for the NFL.

  8. You mean this Vince Young?

Turned professional in 2006 and last played in 2012.

During his six years in the NFL, he earned
36 million on salary and 30 million on endorsements (total of 66 million dollars)

In 2012, he filed for bankruptcy and owed +2 million of dollars on pay advancements.

Is this the same Vince Young???

  9. You have to give this guy some credit at least he’s not giving up. Although I’m sure it’s an extreme long shot that he plays in the NFL again.

  10. Anyone who spends hundreds of thousands per week at TGIFriday’s and Cheesecake factory should totally be holding court at the Veteran workout!

  11. So they actually invited some NFL veterans to the Veterans Combine?
Cause the only person the media talks about is some guy who has never played a down in the regular season…I think his name is Sam or something.

  12. Vince “hey lend me 300k so I can throw myself a birthday party” Young

Lolz this guy has the brainpower of a squirrel.

  13. This is why there needs to be a “minor league” for pro football. No, the NCAA is not it because there’s a time limit for eligibility.

Yup, that one. Trying to say something lol?

  15. “Cheaper than Jameis…

    Same player…”

Why? Because they’re both black quarterbacks? They’re not at all the same player. Young was an athletic, one-read QB that relied on his legs far too often. Winston has an extraordinary football IQ and thrives as a pocket passer, but he’s not all that great of an athlete. They’re not at all similar.

  16. Vince Young went from ‘making it rain’ to barely ‘partly cloudy’. Still better than Josh McCown though.

  17. the veterans combine is seeming like a giant waste of time and resources that would be better spent. how many more times do you have to see these guys cannot play, before you decide they cant play?? the nfl is getting old and theyre jumping the shark at this point just to be on tv.

  18. If you took away his record you’d think you were looking at Jamarcus Russell stats. Dude had 51 int’s and fumbled 40 times in his career…my god! How did he win that much!?

Because they had a good to great running game & a good to great defense. Honestly, if they had a servicable QB they would have been in the SB mix every year. The one decent year Kerry Collins had they started 10-0 en route to a 13-3 record. Then rookie RB Chris Johnson gets hurt against Baltimore (the only half of football he’s ever missed in his career) & they get beat in the first round. The next year Kerry Collins becomes Kerry Collins again & heart & soul of the defense Keith Bullock blows out a knee & the defense isn’t the same & we suck again. VY actually fit in well on those teams for his first 2 years because of his running ability. Then he tried to actually be a QB & his career took a nosedive. He had ZERO accuracy & read defenses worse than he read works of literature. And he was also injury prone, something that never seems to get brought up when mentioning him.

Thanks Bud for forcing VY on Jeff Fisher. That set us back for 8 years & still counting.

  19. Why would teams pick you up on their team because of good combine numbers when they already know you suck on the field. They should just scrap this whole idea and come up with a development league.

  20. If he’s serious about finally becoming a student of the game and applying himself, VY could be a shining late bloomer like Rich Gannon was. … But that’s a big if.

valid point, but they dont go because if they fail there, then there is absolutely no chance of being relevant ever again

  22. In an effort to showcase his arm strength and uniqueness to Pro Scouts during the passing drills, Vince opted not to toss a football and instead choose to throw his pads down the field.

  23. If the Packers would have kept VY and played him in the NFCCG instead of Rodgers, they’d have won.

  24. IT’S TEBOW TIME, the last pass he throwed was a TOUCHDOWN , all he does is WIN . oh but no, He believes in GOD , so let’s BAN him for LIFE. He was the BEST roll model for children that there has ever been , I have spanned the football era for 50 years. HE IS A SPECIAL PERSON, But no the N.F.L. wants MURDERERS and RAPIEST and SCUMBAGS and THEIVES and BULLY’S . Well you got what you wished for. GOOD LUCK TIM TEBOW, I Wish you well……………DIEHARD N.Y JETS FAN.

  25. Not that any are pro-bowl, but when you consider all the possible QBs that were available and BETTER than any Cards back up when Palmer went down in early Nov (early enough to get acclimated to their offense)…

Yet Arians was more worried about the macho, next man up act than actually being a good coach.

    COY????

    LOL!!!

that was good stuff right there tiggs.

  27. Crownofthehelmet…

…what….should I send an ambulance? …I can’t really detect sarcasm in that comment…please lord tell me that was sarcasm

  28. You would think that when the dudes down to the last 3 or 4 mil, that he would realize that the party’s over and make the hangers on buy their own dinners, etc. Hard to believe really.

———————————————————-Yes, but realize there’s absolutely no chance of them getting picked up by an NFL team that is already familiar with their body of work unless desperation sets in. Go to Canada VY and TT.

  30. Hopefully they inform him to leave his attitude at home. Costs one coach his job already. IMHO Vince has nothing left in the tank.
This combine thing is a joke. If these guys had talent they would be playing.

  31. Good decision, VY10 (currently still 3-0 versus Eli[te] Manning/G-Men, i.e., “over .500 team”). Now… the question is… can we convince Timmy Tebow to show up? You could get both VY and Timmy for far less than Josh McCown and both are more productive winners.
