Dolphins release Nate Garner

The Dolphins were busy on Monday, using the transition tag on tight end Charles Clay and releasing a pair of veteran players.

As previously reported, cornerback Cortland Finnegan is out in Miami. On Monday afternoon, the team announced offensive lineman Nate Garner is out as well.

Garner had been with the Dolphins since 2008 and saw time at center, guard and tackle over the course of his time with the team. A head injury knocked Garner out for the second half of last season, however, and the Dolphins cleared $1.65 million under the 2015 cap by parting ways with him at this point in the offseason.

With guard Daryn Colledge and center Samson Satele headed for free agency (and Mike Pouncey likely moving back to the position), the Dolphins could be looking for two new starting guards in the coming months.

Finnegan and Garner join wide receivers Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson as veteran players discarded by the Dolphins recently.

  1. I counted 37 roster spots that could be replaced by the beginning of next season. I hope they keep Wallace and pick up at least one seasoned guard in free agency. CB will be the toughest roster spot to fill. The draft isn’t deep and free agents will be expensive. I think an upgrade at Safety might help too.

My biggest question is, “Can Dion Jordan play linebacker?”

  2. All expected and good movex. I bet they resign Hartline to much less if he does not sign elsewhere. The Dolphins are finally doing what should have been done. A perennial 8-8 team should not be afraid to drop players with overpriced Contracts!

  3. He was the reason Brandon Albert got hurt… for being lazy & dirty… He pushed the defender and the defender landed on Albert’s knee.. I’m glad he’s gone….

  4. Valuable back up – but as mentioned no one pays $1.65 mil for a lineman to sit on the bench.

Keep clearing out cap space and bring in guys like OG Iupati and former Phin DL Kendall Langford to help shore up the lines.

In other FA pick ups I’d love to see a DB like SEA Maxwell line up along side Grimes, and for us to pick up Jacoby Jones as a #4/5 WR and KR.

I don’t want a weapon like Landry to get hurt as a PR/KR.
