Andre Johnson asks Texans to release him

The Texans recently gave receiver Andre Johnson permission to seek a trade.  Johnson won’t be doing that.

Johnson’s agent, Kennard McGuire, tells PFT that he has asked the Texans to release Johnson.

The impasse arose when the Texans recently informed Johnson he’d have a reduced role in 2015.  Johnson responded by saying that he won’t be happy with a reduced role, so it would be better for him to be elsewhere.

The Texans responded by granting him permission to seek a trade.  McGuire believes deliberately leaked to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle the notion that Johnson asked for a trade in an effort to minimize local criticism of the franchise for its treatment of a player who has been with the Texans for all but one year of the team’s existence.

“After 12 years of being a model citizen, an ambassador, and the face of this franchise, he deserves more than a mishandled P.R. campaign that showcases only one side of the story,” McGuire told PFT on Wednesday morning.  “After 12 years, he deserves to be sent off in a better way.”

Indeed he does.  The Texans know that no one will pay $11.5 million to a receiver who’ll turn 34 in July.  At most, a trade would have happened with Johnson doing a new deal.  So instead of doing a new deal elsewhere as part of a trade, he should have been cut and given the chance to do that new deal elsewhere.

The ball is now back in the team’s court.  The only right thing to do at this point is to thank Johnson for his 12 years of loyal service and release him, giving him a six-day head start on the unrestricted free agency market.

  1. This wouldn’t be an issue if he just held out last year after they clearly weren’t trying to “win now.”

Same for calvin Johnson… He has only himself to blame for signing extensions and staying with really bad teams.

  2. I’m waiting for the inevitable article tomorrow about Johnson’s agent denying making such a claim

  3. The Texans owe him nothing. Since when do you have to “reward” someone for being a model citizen?? He received a VERY good paycheck for his services and the contracts were always negotiated by his team under his terms. Thanks for your service. See ya.

  4. I hope he signs with the 49ers.

Years ago, Jerry Rice went to Seattly, and wore Steve Largents number.

Wondering how receptive Jerry would be to letting Johnson keep his #80?

  5. He may no longer be a true number one wide receiver but there are multiple teams who would upgrade their starting receiver line up if they signed him to a deal.

Got to think the Colts would be one, would not be surprised to see the Broncos go after him either.

  6. Two year deal to the Carolina Panthers? Yes, please! Perfect mentor for young Kelvin Benjamin and a much better stop gap #2 WR than Jericho Cotchery.

  7. I don’t understand why they won’t, he just wants to win… I want to see him on any other contending team except the Patriots… We the AFC east do not want to extend the playing life of Tom Brady lol…Indeed…

  8. Johnson’s the one who refused to take a reduced role for the benefit of the team, and he admitted in an interview that he was the one who asked for a trade to begin with. His agent is sounding a bit disingenuous here.

  9. Somehow Miami, please…….real deal, added to mike Wallace and Landry, keep Matthews and get Greene or Strong…..snag up Steven Jackson quick. Quality beasts out there that have been let go or released…. I see this as prime time for Mia, decent draft, right group of vets, we could not just get to playoffs but, slap the pats, down…..bills and jets will need a year or two to even smell postseason action.

  10. Dallas did the same thing last year with Demarcus Ware. At least they released him to be able to win with a championship caliber team. Do the right thing Houston…he’s owed that much.

  11. everyone can bang the drum for him to go to New England but he has said recently he expects to catch 80 balls a season…….he wont get 80 targets in New England………let him go some where else unless his mind set changes……..

  12. I don’t understand why they won’t, he just wants to win… I want to see him on any other contending team except the Patriots… We the AFC east do not want to extend the playing life of Tom Brady lol…Indeed…

    …………………………………………………………………………………..

The Texans job isn’t to help a player out because “he just wants to win.” He is getting payed 11 million dollars because of a contract that he negotiated to get. The Texans should make the move that is best for them, not what is best for Andre Johnson.

  13. No, the right thing to do as a franchise is to wait until June 1 and then cut him to save the max cap dollars. They save $8MM by cutting him now, $11MM if they wait until after June 1. They’re giving him a chance to negotiate a deal new deal with someone else. Fact is, he’s taking a pay cut regardless of where he ends up. They’ve paid him well over the years and do not owe him anything else – especially at the expense of ~$3MM flushed down the drain.

  14. I laugh at the typical delusional Patriots bandwagon fan that thinks the Pats actually have a shot at signing him.

Not only do they have to pay Revis $24MM if they want to keep him, but they are already over the salary cap by TWELVE MILLION ($12,000,000) DOLLARS.

Chiefs, Seahwaks, Colts, Panthers, Ravens, Chargers all make sense.

  15. Johnson should had held out last year and became a Panther opposite Kelvin Benjamin
Then with TE Greg Olsen I think we would have won more games and went further in the playoffs

The reward for being a model citizen is due to the fact that the team no longer wants to carry his contract and has asked him to fill a role other than what was agreed to. They want to get something in return and put the onus on the player to make that happen, and nuked him in the press by making it look like they didn’t want him gone which they clearly do.

He has handled the situation honorably, he deserves for the Texans to handle it honorably as well.

  17. Welcome to the superbowls champion Patriots! How does catching balls from TB12 sound??

he wants to catch 80 balls a season……..wont happen in Foxboro unless he changes his expectations……..

  18. He’s been in the AFC his whole career and knows what team is always in the playoffs. Pats sign him if it’s team friendly and he has a legit chance at a ring.

  19. He’s probably at the point of his career where he realizes that the big contract wasn’t worth all the losing.

He should have demanded this 3-4yrs ago

  20. Welcome to the superbowls champion Patriots! How does catching balls from TB12 sound??

    —————–

One Pats fan to another, sounds nice. But Pats have no $$$ this year and an entire roster to resign after a Super Bowl win. What an ungodly mess. All these free agents thinking, “I was a vital part of this SB run. I want to get paid like it. If you don’t pay me, there are a whole lot of other teams that saw me perform on the big stage and will want nothing more than to weaken my current team.”

  21. If the Texans can save money by waiting, that’s what they’ll do. O’Brien’s in charge now and he’s doing this the way he learned from Belichick.
I’m not sold on O’Brien; last year’s draft was pretty much disaster, although if the injury bug lays off that could still change.
He got the team somewhat turned around, but had a lot of help from the schedule. If he can’t keep it going he’ll get roasted for acting like Belichick but without the results.

  22. This is the same guy who twice received new contracts from the Texans. He’s got to be one of the highest paid receivers in the last decade, if not THE highest paid. Recognize your role Andre. You’re a 34 year old receiver. Swallow your pride and repay some of the loyality that the Texans have shown you through the years. If it’s about the money for you at this point in your career you just don’t get it.

  23. Can’t wait for all the crying when the haters realize the Patriots being over the cap by $12 m is nothing. In a few weeks when the Patriots are under the cap they’ll be on here doing the only thing they can do….cry and talk about asterisks.

Wah, wah… better get polishing on * number 5!

  24. isn’t Boston under 90 feet of snow? why would a Univ. Miami to Houston injury-prone player want to play in the arctic? it’s a legit question.

  25. Honestly, I think he’s a great player but I don’t know if there’s a role for him on the Pats. I like Edelman and Lafell outside and I’m not sure if he’d be able to earn a ton of time over those guys. If they want to move on from Amendola for a more productive slot guy, sure, but I don’t want to move Edelman inside. He takes enough big hits lining up wide and I don’t want to shorten his career just to line up an aging Andre Johnson for a season or two.

  26. The Pats could do it if they wanted to. Not saying they will, but they could. They’re not picking up Revis 20 mil option, everyone knows that. If they sign Revis long term they get about 10 mil in cap relief. Now they’re only 2 mil over. There are plenty of cuts/restructures/extensions they can and will do to free up money, such as Wilfork, Amendola, Arrington, Solder, Vollmer, etc. If they trade Amendola to Houston, it would free up 1.5 mil in cap space that you could give to AJohnson, towards playing for maybe 5 mil(he wants to win, right?). If Revis is gone, and I think he is, the Pats get 20 mil in cap relief.

  27. TEXANS: DO THE RIGHT THING. RELEASE DRE NOW!

Agents and other players are watching (and judging) how you treat the best player in Texans franchise history.

    Let him go now.

  28. I think my Bucs should make a play for him. Imagine lining up V.Jackson, M.Evans, A.Johnson? How could Winston possibly fail throwing to those 3 monsters??? Bucs have plenty of cap room and why not set up your future franchise qb up for success?! If not Tampa then I can see him ending up in Indy or Seattle. He would do great things there too.

  29. I like Andre Johnson but let’s not pretend he has been a model teammate/employee during his tenure. He was not happy with his contract so he held out of voluntary stuff and OTAs back in 2010 (when he still had 5 years left on his current contract). The Texans extended his contract and made him the highest paid WR. Last year he openly bashed the team’s talent level and direction and wanted a trade. They said no. Now he’s upset about a reduced role on a team he didn’t want to be on. The Texans are not villains here. He is an aging player who is not worth his current salary. It’s simply time to move on. No sense trashing the team when they could easily do the same.

    ================================

Yeah – because all the ‘smart players’ base their careers on region/weather… Worked out well for Mike Wallace and the Derphins.

  31. Love Dre, but Texans owe him nothing. He’s been paid handsomely. Make him wait out the last few days. We can’t set an irreversible precedent here

  32. While I would love for the Pats to get Andre, Kraft and Co. need to focus on getting that secondary locked up. If he is around/feasible afterwards, then give it a shot, but Gronk is our stud for the passing game. Johnson is not a must have acquisition.

  33. These guys sign extension after extension for millions and then complain when their services are no longer needed, typically due to age. I like what Andre has done for the Texans but have no sympathy for him.

  34. What’s all this “do the right thing” nonsense? Also, the Texans certainly have not confirmed that they told Johnson he’d have a reduced role next season. Likely they simply asked him to restructure his contract (like Larry Fitzgerald) and he said no.

  35. What will be his asking price, is the question.

Several teams would probably take a flyer… but only at the right price.

  36. Belechick will not pickup Johnson because of what he has done. He grabs players that will do the work at a price the Pats are willing to pay. AJ fits the work part, not so sure about the pay rate. BB has the best eye for talent/potential since Jimmy Johnson was with the Cowboys. Somehow they just know…

  37. The Texans job isn’t to help a player out because “he just wants to win.” He is getting payed 11 million dollars because of a contract that he negotiated to get. The Texans should make the move that is best for them, not what is best for Andre Johnson.
    ——————————————

That’s not the issue. The issue is that they know that nobody will trade for an old WR who is making 11m so they’re telling everyone that AJ asked for a trade. So instead of releasing him out right, something they plan to do anyways, they come up with this ridiculous plan so they don’t look as bad for releasing a popular player.

  38. It’s always beautiful in Oakland… got a good QB situation and a nice front loaded contract for 2-3 years at a more reasonable price wouldn’t be out of reach. Cause good lord could our WRs use an upgrade

  39. Reduced role to whom? I get it, they want to feature Hopkins but who the else do they have? They need him, they just want him for cheap.

“But with the way the Ravens are losing defensive players, I don’t think they’ll be making the playoffs.”

Who exactly did they lose? Do you pay attention to the NFL? If they release Ngata they still have Timmy Jernigan and Brandon Williams behind him and Ozzie has an eye for rookie defensive players. Baltimore needs a WR because Torrey is walking.

Sounds like catching deflated balls which travel farther and are easier to catch.

Let’s put an asterisk on that championship, the fourth asterisk in 4 SB titles.

  42. He’s made is money. Now, all he wants is a Superbowl. New England makes sense for me. And, as far as his 80 catches he will conceed that number if he has a chance to win it all.

  43. Hard to say the Pats need him when they just put up almost 30 on the #1 defense in football to win the Super Bowl. But, why not? Pats seem like the perfect fit if he wants a ring more than another big paycheck.

  44. The reason for his first holdout in 2010 was because he was being underpaid. He was underpaid because he had his uncle represent him when he signed that contract. When he finally got an agent, he was able to work out a deal to get closer to what he deserved.

In 2014 the Texans should have parted ways with him. He was past his prime and the team was rebuilding. They knew that his contract was too big for a rebuilding team yet kept him around. They paired him with some “great” QBs and he had one of the worst years of his career.

Now the Texans are ready to admit its time to part ways and tried to make him look like the bad guy. They won’t find a trade partner because of the bad season plus huge cost coming up. They need to cut him.

  45. I can see a trade to the Pats. The two places the Texans don’t want him to go to is Indy and Dallas so they would prefer a trade.

Johnson would have to be willing to take a two-year deal at about $4.5MM per year. That’s probably too big a cut for him. Plus, he knows he can get more receptions elsewhere (but not ones that matter).

He would be a great move the chains and red zone guy for the Pats.

Worth throwing it out there to see if he bites.

  46. Here’s a clue patsie fans, patsies are NOT going back to the super bowl!!! Just dumb luck that you didn’t lose the super bowl with Lynch running up & down the field to score the game finishing TD!!!

  47. Seriously, all personal bias aside. Where would you go, all things being equal, if you were Andre Johnson?

Now, how does that change given that not all things would be equal?

  48. “Here’s a clue patsie fans, patsies are NOT going back to the super bowl!!!”

Based on the past fourteen years as a sample, the chance (as in statistical probability based on past performance) of the Patriots going back to the Super Bowl is greater than any other team in the NFL by a wide margin. The Patriots have a 43% chance of making it to the Super Bowl and a 29% chance of winning. Don’t mean to be a jerk but it is what it is.

  49. Johnson has had a great career. It’s scary to imagine his number had he played with real NFL caliber QBs.

    (6) – Denver
    (7) – Indy

  51. iamkillerfin, being a Dolphins fan, you are probably interested in the Dolphins chances of going to a Super Bowl, based on the past fourteen years as a sample. Based on such a statistical probability, the Dolphins have virtually zero chance of going to a Super Bowl, never mind winning one. The good news it really is above zero chance even though it never occurred in the period sampled. By the way, “dumb luck” has nothing to do it; the dolphins earned their probability on the field.

  52. he wants to be released because he arrogantly thinks he get that money on the open market.
release Texans and let’s see LOL!!!!

  53. ^^^^ I think everyone can see he wants to be released because he wants one shot at a SB which Houston has shown historically it won’t compete for at least in the time he has left in 1-2 years.

  54. Who the hell cares where he goes or money involved. The dude can still help win. bottom line.

The real issue is the TEXANS. How the hell can that front office sit there and just toss this guy aside w/ no dignity. Ya ruthless league, so what. who up there said this is are scheme & screw you Dre. Who the hell would want to play for this organization. I hope every player in the league reads what is or what will happen, and I guarantee not one player will think, this team is going places. I wish this will come to more discussion some where, and when the Grenade gets thrown,,,,,,, I hope Rick Smith is there to catch it. Makes me sick

  55. I can’t help it.. Again TEXANS what?
    Now Center Chris Myers..

Myers, 33, never missed a start since the Texans acquired him from Denver for a sixth-round pick in 2008.
Myers, a two-time Pro Bowl selection. Another staple bites the dust, one of the best Centers in league. You have NO QB. and you toss the only other leader who can control a large roll of Offense. W/ young line…. I can’t help but laugh…
Rick Smith continues to throw away solid veterans, b/c of cap. Rick who the hell do you replace these guys w/ cap space? Somebody needs to take this guy out to pasture.

  56. Mark it down next to your *

    Revis stays
    McCourty stays
    Vereen stays
    Connelly stays

    Ridley goes
    Amendola goes

    Johnson becomes a Pat

  57. I’m a Pats fan and have to assume “cranespy” is living in one of those states were pot is legal (and cheap).

  58. From the Texans perspective, they went through a protracted negotiation with Johnson last year and can’t do that again. Winning franchises do not pay for past performance. I would expect they tried to get these guys to take pay cuts or restructure (something the Patriots and Ravens do regularly) and the players understandably said no.

Virtually every great player wore the laundry of a team other than the one he starred for before their careers ended. For me, seeing Bobby Orr in a Blackhawks uniform was the lowest point in Boston sports history (and our teams had some horrible years).
