Bills acquire Matt Cassel in trade with Vikings

Getty Images

Buffalo needed to add a veteran quarterback this offseason, and now the Bills have their man: Matt Cassel.

The Bills and Vikings announced today that they have agreed to a trade that will send Cassel to Buffalo. Technically the trade can’t be completed until the league year starts on Tuesday, but both teams have agreed to it.

The Vikings will get draft pick compensation for Cassel. According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Bills will trade the Buccaneers’ 2015 fifth-round pick (which the Bills acquired in a previous trade) for the Vikings’ 2015 sixth-round pick, and Buffalo will also give Minnesota a 2016 seventh-round pick.

Cassel opened last season as the Vikings’ starter but suffered a season-ending injury in Week Three, and with the emergence of Teddy Bridgewater last year, there was little reason for the Vikings to bring Cassel back.

In Buffalo, Cassel will compete with EJ Manuel to be the starter. The winner of that competition will hand off to LeSean McCoy, whom the Bills traded for on Tuesday. The Bills are off to an active start this offseason, even before the opening of free agency.

  1. I know McCoy maybe didnt want to go to Buffalo, but this signing should certainly change that!

  2. I guess the Vikings figured the season would be over if Teddy got seriously hurt, so why pay a backup quarterback $4.75 million? Last I saw of Cassel, he was throwing four incredibly bad interceptions against the Patriots, so a cheaper option makes sense. Cassel is a great guy and he has a good chance to start in Buffalo, so I wish him well.

  3. its refreshing to see the bills be aggressive again…its been a long time….regardless of what they’ve done the past ~2 yrs at least you can get the sense they’re trying, compared to the complacency of the previous 12-13 yrs….they pegulas want a winner and whaley likes to be aggressive….even if you don’t like cassel or mccoy at least the bills feel like they’re no longer the same ole bills of the RCW era

  4. It’s like Rex learned nothing from his failure with the Jets. Matt Cassel is his new Vick. That defense needs to be 85 level Bears good to make Matt Cassel a winner. Orton was actually pretty good.

  5. Wow Rex really likes aging players on the decline. Glad the Bills are changing the losing culture in Buffalo (That was sarcasm)

  6. Excellent move. And, as I predicted, there were more QB’s available than the same 3 or 4 names constantly touted about, like Sanchez, Vick, or Hoyer.

  7. Conspiracy time: Slick Rick wants to prove that Ponder can still be a franchise quarterback so he resigns Ponder, breaking PFT sites bc of trolls heads exploding. Teddy then leads the Vikings on a playoff run but gets hurt and Ponder comes in as a savior and wins the Super Bowl proving that Rick is a genius and that it was the Cassel trade that engineered it all. That’s why I think the Vikes traded him but that’s just me

  8. Dang it!!!!!!! Was hoping Buffalo was going to take Cutler off the Bears hands
    ———————
No go. The Bears are stuck with Cutler for 2015. They’re going to play out the string with him this year while Fox and Pace spend their 1st season fixing that horrific defense. Then they’ll get serious about solving their QB situation in 2016.

  9. good backup and mentor to EJ and worse come to worse he can start week 1.

im diggin the Rextasy so far.

still doesnt matter Packers will be your 2015/16 champions

  10. Why do Patriots fans laugh at Rex?

He gave the Patriots two very difficult games in a year where the Patriots won the Super Bowl and the Jets rotated Geno Smith and Michael Vick. If the Patriots dip at all, or Ryan’s available talent improves at all (which is has, from the Jets to the Bills), the Patriots will have their hands even more full with him.

  11. Big risk, must be thinking of signing backup for teddy through free agency!

Please no ponder! We tried and didn’t work out- Move on!

  12. I actually like this move for Buffalo – he’s not all that different than Kyle Orton, and gives them the vet presence they need at the right price with less baggage than some of the other guys available.

  13. The Best Franchise in the NFL strikes again…

    We.
    Dominate.

Getting a draft pickup for a backup QB coming off a season ending injury.

This is why we consistently win.

  14. The vikings traded away their starting QB for a late round pick. Usually it is the other way around with Bollinger, Holcomb, McNabb, et al.

Fortunately now they assume they have regained the stability at the QB position they had with Tarvaris Jackson.

  15. Damn wanted to get him back in Minnesota. He is a great solid veteran qb, has learned from one of the bests in Tom Brady. He can easily step in and win games if needed to, and he should be able to mentor and help out EJ Manuel on becoming a starting qb.

  16. remember when Cassell was a prize free agent and some people thought the Patriots should have kept him and traded Brady?

    How quickly things can change

  17. Poor Matt; he’s being sent to team with a coach that has historically not given a rip about the offense. I’m surprised Buffalo would trade draft picks for Cassel, or any QB.

Considering that the Vikings are essentially down to one quarterback, I think this increases the likely-hood that the Vikings use their first round draft pick on an offensive lineman, or go after a big name in free agency. If they want Bridgewater starting all year long, they’d better improve that OL before August.

  18. What is it about Rex Ryan and QB’s??? Brian Hoyer is a much better player and available. Matt Cassel stinks and I’m a Pats fan who saw the “good” Matt Cassel.

  19. Bills getting a great guy but don’t think he will get you anywhere. Vikings freeing up some coin for AD I see.

  20. Wahoo a 7th round pick in 2097 for Cassel would be a complete shakedown of Buffalo. Clears $4.5 million from the books.. Anything else is just a bonus.

  21. No chance Cassell is being brought in as a Starter.

He is a vet and a safety net. E.J. Will be gone if whoever they bring in works out.

Look for Bills to pick up Sanchez or Locker. Most important for the Bills will be to sign Mike Iupoti at G.

  22. Rex won’t ask Cassel to do much – just manage a ground-based offense and don’t make mistakes. He can do that. Combine that with a defense that should be downright scary, and I’d say Buffalo has to be the front runner in the AFC East next year. By that, I mean they’ll finish in 2nd – everyone knows which team owns first place.

  23. ” But he won 11 games with the Patriots in 08″

No Belichick won 11 games with Cassell as a QB. The same team went 16-0 and 18-1 including the playoffs with Brady.
They won seven more games with Brady.. But hey he is a “System QB”.. Just like Montana in the West coast offense designed by Coach Walsh..

    Rex is making moves!

    The ain’t good moves, though.

  25. And so dies my pipe dream of Foles.

And my hopes for making the playoffs ever again.

    I hate this team.

  26. Cassel broke our hearts in KC, although he did make $40 + million off the Chiefs and only had 1 winning season. I wouldn’t pin your hopes on the guy Bills.

  27. You people must be joking. Matt Cassel is leaps and bounds better than anything on the open market.

As a Vikings fan? Buffalo just got themselves a veteran on the field leader who is WAY better than all these people who havent seen him play in years say he is. He led our franchise, beat Teddy out of training camp this year and got hurt on a dirty play by the Saints(hmmm sounds familiar).

Without a #1 pick this year? This is a solid, solid, solid move by the Bills. Cassel is an above average NFL QB. AP said that when Ponder went down in 2013 and Cassel came in, the entire team gravitated around him because he walked in and took command of the huddle. He is a leader.

Well done Bills, and good luck Matt Cassel! Thanks for holding it down, wish you could have come back another year!

  28. I like it. Matt was a classy player here, and he is rewarded by trading him somewhere he can compete as a starter. And we get something in return. Win/win for everybody.

  29. Bills are idiots. Matt Cassel isn’t worth a sack of potatoes let along a draft pick.

Plus..they could have waited until the Vikings cut him and got him for nothing.

This is why stupid organizations remain high in the draft and good organizations remain in the playoffs.

  30. Wow. Poor move by rex. If hes just adding a veteran backup, thats fine… but if hes looking to hand the keys over… Fully count on Buffalo drafting a QB in Middle Rounds.

  31. I’m betting this signing was for Cassel to be the Veteran back-up there. Or if Manual just can’t cut it and gets hurt or absolutely implodes.
Cassel is decent enough to keep a team with a very good defense in games.

My question/concern now for my Vikes is who do they have in mind for THEIR backup? I will be AMAZED if they keep Ponder.

  32. Cassel isn’t a bad qb. He has a good arm and a brain, which seems to be missing in many young qbs. He probably won’t win an mvp award, but he will win some games while your young qb prospects learn the game on the bench. Depending on what they gave up to get him, this trade is probably good for both teams.

  33. The Bills are clearing cap space for a lot of teams.

Sometimes you need to let the opportunities come to you instead of trying to be bold and force them.

Casell is a good guy but he turns the ball over all too often. He’s a poor man’s Mark Sanchez without the two AFCCGs on his resume.

  34. purplehaze28 I think Ponder is a free agent so trading him wouldn’t have been an option. However I wouldn’t be shocked if they did re-sign him to be a backup. I would think a change of scenery is best for ponder right now. This is a good move for vikes so teddy feels that he is clearly the guy.

  35. Matt Cassel has a 33-38 career record as a starter over 10 seasons with the Vikings, Chiefs and Patriots. New England selected Cassel in the seventh round of the 2005 draft.

Rex believes they’ve found the right guy in Cassel, who becomes the heavy favorite to start for a Bills team that suddenly looks very different than it was 24 hours ago.

    Call it the Rex effect….

Yep I call it the Rex wrecks a team effect…..Buffalo fans just watched another year go down the drain…..

  36. Sanchez is alot better than Cassel and they wouldn’t have to give up any draft picks for him .

  37. Matt Cassel is the best of a poor group of available QBs. The Bills just need somebody who won’t turn the ball over and will manage the offense. He won’t turn it over like Sanchez, Hoyer was horrific the last half of the season, and Locker makes Kevin Kolb look durable.

He most likely won’t be the starting QB anyways. But if he is, he is the best fit for what the Bills need their QB to do. To everyone who thinks this is such a terrible move: who exactly did you want that would be so much better? Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers aren’t exactly available for trade

  38. Well,

What part don’t you people get? What’s Buffalo supposed to do? Let E.J. Manuel be the backup. Christ! what is he gets in the game. No friggin way!

They needed a vet back up.

Look for Locker to sign with Bills and be opening day starter.

  39. Yeah.. in terms of compensation, the Vikings GAVE him away. Traded their 6th round pick for Buffalo’s 5th and picked up a 7th round pick? Players in those rounds almost never even MAKE the roster other than as a special teamer.. if that.

They were just clearing cap space by releasing him and maybe setting up the possibility of getting a younger backup and clearing a spot to get a developmental type guy for the future in a later round of the draft.

But now THEY need a veteran backup…

  40. Such is life for those in the league who don’t have a good QB– you get who you can when you can and hope for the best.

  41. Word is Spielman tried trading Bridgewater for a 7th rounder but the Bills wanted Cassel. Ricky even was willing to throw in a case of tacky XS QB gloves but the Bills saw through it

  42. No Belichick won 11 games with Cassell as a QB. The same team went 16-0 and 18-1 including the playoffs with Brady.
They won seven more games with Brady.. But hey he is a β€œSystem QB”.. Just like Montana in the West coast offense designed by Coach Walsh..

    ——————————————

…and Belicheck threw how many passes that season? What was BB’s QB rating for those games after Brady went down?

    Sorry – give credit where it is due;

Yes, Belicheck is a great coach and gets the most out of his players, but Cassel still went out on the field, threw those passes and won those games. Unless all he did was hand off the ball on every play…

    516/327/63.4 21/11 219yds 89.4 rtg

He was in the top 10 that year, by qb rating.

  43. Vikings receive a 2015 5th and a 2016 7th for Cassel and a 2015 6th. Given that a pick next year is worth one round less than the same pick this year, a 2016 7th is worth nothing. Not time to resurrect the Rick Spielman is a Magician moniker.

  44. I like the trade. It doesn’t seem like very much for a vet QB, but it’s fair. This actually gives EJ a chance to win a QB competition but only if he steps up his game. Cassel has played very well at times and I have no doubt he’ll force EJ to play better if he wants the job.

I still want the McCoy trade to fall through. Kiko is worth more than McCoy and our defense will need help at LB if both Kiko and Spikes go.

  45. Don’t worry, Sanchez will still be the starter. Cassel and Manuel are backups at best, and Rex never does anything the easy way. If you see a Bills-emblazoned pickup parked in the bushes in Philly in the coming weeks, don’t be too surprised.

  46. Wait…does that mean we are keeping Ponder?! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck to you Matt! #skol

  47. Am I the only Vike fan who does not like this move? A few late round draft picks and in exchange we lose our veteran presence at backup QB? A guy who we know can play? And can at a minimum be instrumental in the development of Bridgewater? All to save a millions dollars? Who’s our backup going to be? Christian? You can’t be serious.

  48. Matt Cassel is the best of a poor group of available QBs. The Bills just need somebody who won’t turn the ball over and will manage the offense. He won’t turn it over like Sanchez
    ________

Clearly, you didn’t see Cassel’s game against the Patriots in Week 2 last year. He literally was throwing footballs up for grabs. Many of his passes looked like Russell Wilson throwing a Hail Mary 2-point conversion, except Cassel’s passes were intercepted and Wilson’s put them in the Super Bowl.

  49. Just re-read the story. All we get is a 7th round pick and move up from a 6th round pick to a 5th round pick? So, basically a bag plus of garbage? Stupid.

  50. This is why Spielman did what he did:

    1) He freed up some cap room. BTW, even if he keeps Ponder, it would be for league minimum for veterans. Ponder’s option was not picked up.
    2) He likes as many picks as he can, so he can trade back in the draft.
    3) Still, don’t be surprised if he picks up a cheap ($) QB to replace Cassel either in FA or the draft.

P.S. Don’t be surprised if AD hits the happy trails and gets traded in the near future. More picks for moving around in the draft and getting more players. The Vike’s draft won’t be static. It will go uuuuuuuuuuuuuupppppppppp and dowwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnn.

Basically, he is setting himself up for the draft. Notice how he really hasn’t done anything ’till now?

    ————————————————-

His character is fun to joke about.

He’s an excellent defensive coach, and for short term an outstanding motivator. The Jets started strong under him, but after 2 years, steadily declined. The Bills will be VERY competitive for at least a year or 2. And Rex knows how to scheme and make life difficult for the Patriots’ offense. The games are always rock fights and should be fun to watch.

  52. sfsugator says: Mar 4, 2015 1:23 PM

Crazy to think this was Matt Leinarts backup in college didn’t play a single snap.
    ——————————————-

He also backed up Carson Palmer prior to Leinart taking over.

  53. So basically Cassell is only worth a next year 7th round draft pick when all is said and done. In my opinion if the trade is correct in this article, the Vikes didn’t get very good trade value for Cassell. He’s not the best QB in the NFL but he’s not the worst either. Not sure I understand this trade value unless they are looking to bulk up their front line in the 5th round this year and they have plans for a solid backup QB.

  54. That guy has made so much money riding the wave of β€œ11-5 the year Brady got hurt.” They fail to mention that he went 11-5 with a team that was 16-0 the year prior (5 less wins is significant) and had Moss and Welker when they were still in their prime.

  55. Whatever, I don’t want make too to big a deal out of dealing a backup QB, but we have so many holes on our team, why create one when you don’t need to? Our offensive line is terrible. Teddy can scramble, but he’s already been hurt – it is very likely that we will need to play the backup QB next year. And now we don’t have one. And for what? To save a little money? Is Red McCombs back in town? We are giving this team almost 3/4 of a BILLION dollars. They can pay an established, veteran QB $4M.

  56. When I learned that Shady was traded to Buffalo, I was legitimately concerned about playing this team. Now that they aquired Cassel, I’m significantly relieved. That defense will still be a brutal matchup though.

  57. I disagree with many of you. Rex, while a bit of an exaggerated personality is not an awful coach. The GM in NY traded or gave away all the talent on that team leaving him coaching a pile of second string talent. And Cassel is not a bad QB. He was done starting in MN so he was gonna go where he had a shot. But he didn’t do too badly for the teams he had here. I like him and wish him the best. I think Bills fans will be pleasantly surprised.

  58. So a net of one draft pick for St. Louis. Bills get a 6th round from Minnesota and Minnesota gets a 5th and 7th. I’d say that is about right on the value for him. In this trash heap of qb’s this off season, no one is going to feel good about getting one of the off season free agents. But the Bills need bodies.

  59. This is a GREAT move FOR THE Vikings!
to get rid of him and actually get something back.

  60. “7th round picks have no value.”

Julian Edelman says hi. He and numerous other low round draft picks have been very successful in the NFL

Don’t let facts get in the way of your frustration though

  61. In 3 months it will be different but right now the VIKES QB’s are

Teddy B ___, ___, ___, and someone named Pat Devlin

I am glad we have a great OL.

    Oh wait …

NOT A FAN OF THIS MOVE.
MAKE THIS MOVE AFTER YOU HAVE SECURED A BACKUP WHOSE NAME IS NOT PONDER

  62. Yes, Rex is winning the pre-season again. I remember when he thought John Terminator Connor was the best thing since sliced bread. He won’t name a starting QB b/c that will cause opposing coaches to stay up nights worrying how to defend.

The activity does create buzz / sell tix in Buffalo, but at the end of the year it will be 8-8.

  63. The vikings traded away their starting QB for a late round pick. Usually it is the other way around with Bollinger, Holcomb, McNabb, et al.

Fortunately now they assume they have regained the stability at the QB position they had with Tarvaris Jackson…………

Sort of the great shape the Packers are in with Flynn and Tolzien…

  64. “when you think of Buffalo you think of cold and losing games.”

    Its my new slogan…..

  65. Matt Cassel isn’t coming to Buffalo to be the backup.

He will be the starter, $4.75 million reasons why he will be

  66. Since there is about a grand total of roughly 40 guys who can even almost competently play qb in the NFL, I think this is a fantastic deal for Buffalo.

  67. This is the smartest move made by the Bills in many years. Disciplined QB with a very big arm.
You have the WR that can create separation.
Put blockers in front of him and you give the Pats a run. I am a die-hard Pats fan and this move would give me a good reason to pony up the $20mm for Revis Island.

  68. Rex gets Cassell when Mark ‘ButtFumble’ Sanchez was available? I don’t get this. Rex already has the Sanchez tattoo. If that doesn’t show dedication to a certain QB, then I don’t know what is. Does that mean the tattoo is coming off? Has the love affair worn off??

  69. 1. There’s no contest between Cassell and Manuel at QB. Cassell is far superior, hands down. The Bills just upgraded at the QB position. Cassell isn’t a Hall of Famer, but he’s better than anything else they have at present.
    2. Does this mean that the Vikings are now going to keep Christian Ponder as their backup QB? I was hoping he’d be out of there and move on to something else. The Minnesota fans really dislike Ponder. Hopefully the Vikes can find someone else via free agency or the draft to back up Bridgewater.

  70. It’s a great pickup for Buffalo, Matt is SOLID at the position and will do a good job.

    ———————————————————————–

You might be. I like it. It frees up $4.75 mil in cap space. that was $4.75 mil for a backup QB. A backup that threw 4 int against NE last year. A backup that threw 14 td’s and 13 int’s for the Vikes. There are a handful of adequate backups available at half the price. And don’t be surprised if Spielman uses those picks to swing a deal to get back into 1st or 2nd round.

  72. This is a good move for the Bills. Cassel will be competent this year, and next year the Bills will draft a QB. The QB choices are thin this year, at least where the Bills are drafting. Next year they will have a new rookie QB, and a solid vet backup in Cassel.

    _______________________________

He was, but he feasted on bad teams and often struggled against good teams that season. The general feeling in NE was that even if the Pats had gotten into the playoffs that year they were 1 and done with Cassel at the helm.

Of course that was a number of years ago. The question really is how has Cassel come along in his development since then and will the Bills run a system that suits him?

I think Cassel could be a nice pickup for Buffalo, especially given the way their defense was playing late in the season last year. If Cassel ends up playing I don’t think he’ll have to carry the team on his back to win games. Just avoid big mistakes. Also having LeSean will definitely make things a little easier for Cassel.

Uhhh, our stating QB is Bridgewater, and will be for the next 15 years. Almost every NFL announcer, analyst, pundit, and critic recognize Bridge as the real deal. That he is no doubt.

I realize you are trying to be cute about Cassell.

Your cuteness is a just a disguise, hiding behind the facts that your entire team is Rodgers.

Rodgers seems to be getting old quickly though and is on the other side of 30.

It has been proven the last 2 years, when Rodgers goes down, the packers go down, and HARD.

Conversely, our QB that was keeping the spot warm for a few weeks-Cassell-goes down, and our 21 year old QB goes 6-6, WITHOUT the best RB in the games,AND 2 TARTING offensive lineman, and our starting TE (Rudolph).

Your team, in 2013, went 1-6-1 with Flynn and the rest of the has beens. That tells the difference between our teams, as defensively, we are headed in Top 10 territory, and yours is busy choking and losng the largest lead in NFC and AFC Championship history…..you lost when you had a 16 point lead AND THE BALL.

Don’t even get started on Special Teams, you had
the worst in the entire league.

Our arrow is pointed WAY up, and SLICK RICKis ready to deal again.

Your team is still licking their wounds and Cobb will be signing with another team.

AP will be back, and the world order will be restored!!!!!

    SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. I don’t get the vikes Motive here other than clearing cap space which they have Lots of. Cassel knows the play book and is a solid back up. He will be getting 4.75 mil or something like that, I guess at that price the Bills might be looking for him to start.

I would not be suprised if the vikes signed Hoyer in FA

  76. Says a lot about their investment in Teddy Bridgewater, one would think. By the way… Matt Cassel: May 17, 1982; Vince Young: May 18, 1983. Of course, VY10 is still currently 3-0 versus Eli[te] Manning/G-Men (“over .500 team”). Cassel had two good years in 2008 (Pats) and 2010 (Chiefs).

  77. I’m really happy for Matt Cassel.

He was a great leader for the Vikings, and proved what a great team mate he is with his full support of Teddy Bridgewater from the sideline of each game.

He deserves another chance to start, and will hopefully be the bridge Buffalo needs to get EJ Manuel (or other young QB) ready for the future.

Good luck to you Matt. Thank you for helping the Vikings get the win against the Steelers in London (the only Viking game I have attended so far).

  78. Finding a reliable starting QB is becoming increasingly difficult in the NFL. As much as people criticize the Browns for McCown and the Bills for Cassel, teams need to have SOMEONE taking the snaps. Signing a veteran to mentor your younger QBs isn’t a bad idea at all.

The good QBs hardly ever move, if at all. Every offseason the QB market looks something like this – career backups and also-rans hoping to resurrect careers with a new team. And good for them. A lot of guys rarely get a legit chance to prove themselves with a decent team.

  79. As long as the O-line can protect him for the 35-40 seconds it takes him to make a decision, he will be fine.

  80. Spielman the magician is at work again. This may be a good trade for the Bills. I didn’t think Cassell looked very good last year but what do I know. He looked better than EJ. Who drafts a QB in the first round and then gives up on him in his 2nd year? Bizarre.

  81. I hate the Patriots with a passion. That said, you might as well give them the AFC East for the next decade, because it is abundantly clear that Buffalo has no clue what they is doing. Different ownership, same disaster. Anyone that posts here could do a heck of a lot better job in building a Buffalo team.

The Jets are, well, the Jets.

Miami has a chance to be half way decent with Tannehill as their QB, but they still have too many missing pieces.

    ——

d’okay. He’s going to trade a 5th and a 7th to move back in to the 1st round. Sure, as long as he throws in a 2nd and a 3rd.

  83. Greg Roman was a good offensive coordinator with Alex Smith at quarterback. Cassell is very similar to Smith, this should be interesting as it’d be nice to see buffalo back in the playoffs

  84. NOT A FAN OF THIS MOVE.
MAKE THIS MOVE AFTER YOU HAVE SECURED A BACKUP WHOSE NAME IS NOT PONDER
    ————
Just because you can’t see the grand plan, doesn’t mean the Vikings can’t. It’s a good trade. Sign another backup for maybe $2 mil tops, use the saved money for depth on o-line. A two for one swap basically.

  85. It’s hillarious reading comments from Bills fans who are disappointed they didn’t get Sanchez……..Sanchez!

Do you people remember who he is? Butt fumble etc….etc….

You guys are still going to stink but Cassel is better than Sanchise.

  86. joetoronto: you sure are infatuated with the region of Buffalo. You and the mayor cheer for the NFL team you don’t have.

  87. As a Chiefs fan we saw the good and bad of Cassell. The guy is a class act among a bunch of kids just learning the game. If they actually have a offense that fits him they might not be to bad. He did take us to a playoff game. That’s better than a lot of our QBs we have had over the years lately. Plus he knows New England’s system so that has something to do with it I’m sure.

  88. I understand the move. Buffalo doesn’t have a first round pick. The FA QB market is putrid. And will still cost too much money. Hate to say it, but Cassel is an upgrade over Manuel. And all they really gave up was trading back one round. A 7th rounder next year? That’s a ham sandwich. Buffalo has a ton of bucks. You know Rex is gonna go after Revis. And he will get him. Can’t run on Buffalo now. Won’t be able to throw on them next season. With McCoy, a caretaker qb is good enough for one season. Rex knows what he is doing. I just wish he was still DC for my Ravens.

Word is Spielman tried trading Bridgewater for a 7th rounder but the Bills wanted Cassel. Ricky even was willing to throw in a case of tacky XS QB gloves but the Bills saw through it
    //////////////////////////////////////

Then the Bills offered a 2nd rd pick to the Packers for Rogers but they saw the replay of the NFCC (choke) game and withdrew.

” But he won 11 games with the Patriots in 08β€³

No Belichick won 11 games with Cassell as a QB. The same team went 16-0 and 18-1 including the playoffs with Brady.
They won seven more games with Brady.. But hey he is a β€œSystem QB”.. Just like Montana in the West coast offense designed by Coach Walsh..

    ————–

Pats played a much weaker schedule with Cassel as well

Brady year AFC east schedule was a killer, e.g. they played other undefeated teams in weeks 5, 8 and 11.
The Cassel year AFC east schedule was so weak that 11-5 was 3rd place in the division

  91. So the Vikings essentially trade Cassel for the right exchange their sixth round pick for the first pick in round five?

Sounds like Spielman was more interested in clearing cap space than in getting a decent return in the trade. Cassel’s not long-term starting material, but he’s not a complete flunkie either. I would have thought the Vikings could have gotten that pick straight up, or a fourth round pick straight up. Cassel is going to start some games for the Bills this year, and probably help win a couple of them.

  92. Not a bad move by Rex & friends. Cassel is a back up veteran QB game manager. He’s not going to challenge EJ (or a QB to be drafter). He’s for EJ (or draftee to come) to OVERTAKE Cassel. That’s Cassel’s role. To not suck, and give EJ/draftee-to-come the confidence that they beat out another QB in competition.

Also, if said QB goes down with an injury, Cassel might actually win you a game or two. Not more than 2 though.

  93. It is ridiculous the number of people that claim to be Vikings fans on this site yet do not know that Ponder is no longer on the team. He is a free agent who’s name you prob won’t even hear about ever again!

That said, this is a good move by both teams. The Vikings free up cap space AND get a couple of picks in return. Cassel is a class act who brings a veteran mentality to the Bills.

I gotta wonder who the Vikings plan to bring in as a backup to Bridgewater. Of the available QB’s, none are going to want to accept a backup role, at least not at first. I hate to say it, but I can see the Vikings bringing in Vick on a one year deal.

Watch for Slick Rick to have 2-3 picks in the first round AGAIN this year!!!!!

    Good veteran competition for EJ.

I’d be shocked if Buffalo isn’t in the playoffs next year.

    ====================================
They could be…but it will be as a wild card. Can’t see them taking the division from the Patriots. Don’t forget the last game of the season…last year. Do you think the Patriots would have lost if that game meant anything?

  95. Good move for them.

I don’t know how good this team’s O line is, but the other pieces seem to be in place.

  96. I hate to say it, but I think Buffalo is making some good moves. The offense should be solid & the defense should be really good. Rex can win with that.

    _____

    1. Teddy sprained his ankle in his first game but only missed the next game because it was on Thursday. Hardly injury-prone.

    2. I believe the public component of the stadium is $456 million, which is not close to 3/4 of a BILLION dollars.

    3. They can also pay an established veteran QB $2.5M while getting extra draft picks.

  98. This is surprising. Cassel has been solid and worth his salary as a mentor for Teddy. Ponder showed what he has as a backup when he started week 4 against GB and played miserably.

I sure hope this doesn’t mean the Vikings are sticking with Ponder. My excitement level just dropped about 25%. It does free up about $4 mil in salary cap space. They are meeting with AP today, I wonder if he is asking for guaranteed money to stay and this is one way to ensure we have enough. Hope not.

  99. Win-win for everybody
Vikes get rid of some cap space, get some picks as they already have their starting QB spot settled.
Bills get a better QB then what they could get on the market and it brings some depth to compete with EJ Manuel. Also, if Bad Matt Cassel shows up, you got McCoy, so nice moves by all really

  100. I love all of these folks giving critiques of Cassel’s play…almost all of which never took a snap at quarterback or even played football outside of high school.

From all accounts this is a stand-up guy, has some skills (2010 probowl) and has won some games…He has been good on some good teams (2008 NE and 2010 KC) and at other times been bad on bad teams 2009,2011,2012 KC).

Matt, good luck and know that everyone on this board would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

  102. Everyone is laughing at the Bills. They gave up a 5th rounder this year and a 7th rounder next year They get Cassel and an undisclosed draft pick. Free agency has barely begun and the draft hasn’t come yet. I think this is a good move. Now you have Cassel and Emanuel and plenty of time to get someone else. Cassel is an upgrade from Kyle Orton who was a statue in the pocket and they went 9-7. Bring in one more guy to compete – you have a good running game and good wide receivers – an awesome defense. This was a good start to the preseason competition at QB.

  103. Dear Rex,

You should have called me, (really…Matt Cassel? he’s not going to help you win a playoff game vs. Belichick-please reference the January 16, 2011 game in Foxboro)

I’m just saying that the 5th and 7th round picks are a pretty meaningless portion of that trade.

And, I have seen what he’s dealt in the recent past. A 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th round pick for a WR who can’t get off of the bench and lost his starting to job to a guy claimed off of Cleveland’s practice squad. Not exactly a magical transaction if you ask me.

  105. Cassel has the potential to be the next Rich Gannon, journeyman who really puts it together late in his career once he gets the purple stench washed off of him.

Not for nothing, but you do realize that when you rank qb’s by rating, Bridgewater was 22nd, right?

Doesn’t matter what anyone says, it’s what he does…

  107. Sanchez is better than Cassel, this is an odd move. The real issue is EJ Manuel. Bills have to keep bringing in guys because he can’t cu t it. Maybe it’s time they cut him. Can’t wait 3 years for first round pick to develop.

  108. I’ll say another thing for Matt. He is a lot more mobile than people think. If you give him room he can run with the rock. He is also good with touch passes in the screen game.

  109. That’s IT?! Why in the FRICK would we get rid of Cassel so cheap?! Why not at least ask the only backup QB with experience that we would have had to simply take a pay cut?!?!?! Fifth round this year and seventh next year, PLUS we had to give up a pick THIS year? What a horrible deal for the Vikings!!!

  112. All you need in the NFL when you’re a QB is 1-2 good years. Ryan should’ve went to Atlanta where there was actually a good QB.

  113. Cassel is a “Game Management” QB, exactly what they need to finally turn the corner and make the playoffs. There was no need for a big name flashy quarterback… Ryan’s team will be ground and pound and will rely on basic passing… screen plays, short to intermediate routes and some hard nosed running. Cassel will fit right into what the team needs. I am excited to get the season under way!!

Why do Patriots fans laugh at Rex?
    ______________________________________

Actually all Patriots fans do not laugh at Rex. I think he is one heck of a good coach and whose players love to play for him.

He is outspoken but hardly stupid. His hands were tied with the Jets but he never complained. He always could get his teams up to play the Pats tough and the Bills will become relevant again.

  116. joker65 says:

“when you think of Buffalo you think of cold and losing games.”

    Its my new slogan…..

    —————————————————————

Sorry, buddy, that’s the Minnesota Vikings slogan.

    Think of another one.

  117. funny there’s more comments from Vikings fans than Bills fans here against this trade! then again, at least it ain’t Matt Flynn…. Can’t wait to see the experts give the Bills the wildcard spot this year (and they are quite talented but that’s what you get when you draft in the top ten every year for the last 15 years or so…)

Actually, they shoulda tried to convince Kyle Orton to not retire. Orton is better than Cassell is.

  118. It looks like Rex started off where he ended at the Jets. Trading for useless players that in no way can win any games. He wasn’t any good with the Vikings, why do they think that will change with the Bills? Rex is a poor decision making coach and has no idea how to coach a team. The Bills might as well get ready for more miserable seasons to come. Get the towels ready to wipe away the tears.

  119. Cassel is a stand up dude who led my Chiefs to the playoffs! Don’t be surprised if he is your starter in Buffalo next year! Trust me you will love the guy!

  120. A solid performer who knows the Pats system [think two games per year] Nice move by the media hog.

Of course I hate the idea of Cassel, an Ex Patriot, having to go to the special Hades that is Buffalo, NY… But if he can start, and they can give him a viable system, he could do some things there.

  121. Why is there over 200 comments on an article about Matt Cassel being traded for a late round pick?

  122. Say what you want, of the bottom 15 teams in the league last year, the Bills seem to be the only team making moves. As for this move and getting rid of Kiko in the trade for McCoy, ponder this……..

the Bills last year were ONE game away from the playoffs! That was done, WITHOUT Alonso (so how big of a loss is it) and a QB in Kyle Orton, who it could be argued, is worse than Matt Cassell.

I have trust in GM Doug Whaley that he understands what is going on. I look at the moves he has made and not a single one made me scratch my head……….Brought in Brandon Spikes to fill in for Kiko Alonso, Spikes had a solid year……Brought in Anthony (Boobie) Dixon, 2nd in rushing on the team and a solid special teams player…….drafted sammy watkins and preston brown……….signed richie incognito to help the young experienced O-line………..

Finally it seems Buffalo has an identity of what they want to be and they are making the moves to obtain that. Just remember, ONE GAME AWAY FROM PLAYOFFS last year and they got better…..

  123. I still have faith that Manuel can become a legit starter in this league. That being said, I think this is a good move for the Bills.

Even if Cassel wins the starting job, he is a good tutor for EJ to learn the NFL position.

  124. purplehaze28 says:Mar 4, 2015 1:04 PM

Rex would have LOVED those happy feet!

In all of the comments posted here, this is your second comment that refrences trading Ponder. The sad thing is….40 ppl agreed w/you on this one.

You may want to re-think your strategy. Minnesota cannot trade Ponder. He is a free agent, and Minnesota has no rights to him

A solid performer who knows the Pats system [think two games per year] Nice move by the media hog.

    =====================================

He was a Patriot a long time ago…and since when has “knowing” the Patriots system ever helped any team at all?

Rex will make the Bills a tough out up there. That’s about it. He’s gonna win with defense when he does win.

  126. The fact that Matt Cassel went 11-5 in New England shows how much overrated Brady is and how much underrated Belichick, Kraft are. Brady is a product of the system, a system that has shown it can win with any QB. A system that has also been shown to cut corners and act unethically.

  127. As a PATS fan I look forward to a better more difficult AFC East Division. Rex was always a contender against the PATS and the Bills D was pretty darn good last year. Now beef up the Bills offense and we may have some great games coming in the division this year!…
