Hartline visits the Bears on Wednesday

On Tuesday, free-agent receiver Brian Hartline visited the Browns.  On Wednesday, the Hartline heartland tour takes him to Chicago, for a visit with the Bears.

Per a league source, Hartline will visit Halas Hall later today.  His visit to the Browns went well, and other teams remain interested.  Hartline hopes to decide on his next team within the next 24 hours.

Interested teams include the Dolphins, who cut Hartline last week in lieu of paying him $5.9 million in 2015.

Hartline had the lowest yardage output of his career with 474 in 2014, despite starting all 16 regular-season games.  He generated more than 1,000 yards in 2013 and 2012.

Chicago’s interest in Hartline is intriguing.  Given the rumors and speculation that receiver Brandon Marshall could be gone, Hartline could step in and start across from Alshon Jeffery.

  1. Whether or not Hartline signs here, Marshall is gone. Hopefully some team is stupid enough to actually give up a pick – any pick – for that nutcase.

  2. Hartline is not a bad WR. He was just overpaid in Miami and became a cap casualty. He’s also a smart businessman with a big career ahead when he leaves football. Expect him to carefully analyze his options.

  3. BMarsh is one of the only entertaining players other than Martellus that actually sells tickets for this dismal Bears team.

Get rid of BMarsh and Bears will be boring on and off the field.

Seems like it’s heading that direction. BMarsh still wants to do his NFL show in 2015 and Fox has already made clear that’s no bueno as far as he’s concerned. I also think they want to see how Cutler does without him for a season before they decide whether to stick with him at QB beyond the upcoming season.

My concern is if they’re expecting Alshon Jeffery to move into the #1 role. He got a trial run at that last year with Marshall out and did not respond. It would also make Alshon more expensive to extend.

  5. Watching him with the Fins, I can tell you Hartline is underrated. Give him a chance and the guy can make plays.

  6. Brandon Marshall 4.52 40yd dash
    Brian Hartline 4.52 40yd dash
    Alshon Jeffery 4.48 40yd dash

    Pretty comparable.

  7. Brandon Marshall is gone because he’s proven that he’s still a selfish person. His BPD may be under control as far as abusing women, but the look at me, and I’m the most important, narcissistic qualities are alive as ever. Alshon can take his place as the “big target”, Hartline is a good NFL WR, he can be a possession/medium range guy and they still need a burner to keep defenses honest. So if they cut Marshall (and I hope they do) they save roughly 4 million, they can give that to Hartline and kill two birds with one stone. Draft a WR with speed….AFTER addressing the defense at #7 in the draft.

  8. Hartline is good… the reason he didn’t put up big yards is Miami gave up trying to get Tannehill to throw an accurate deep ball and it was all checkdowns…. Tannehill had the lowest average throw in the entire league last year…. dead last.

don’t care how good the WR are… if the average pass is 8 yards or whatever… nobody is getting yards.

  9. I love it when uneducated fans throw up meaningless stats like 40 times! Lol !!!

Nobody with proper vision has ever watched B MARSH & B Hartline and thought, Hmmm these guys are interchangeable! !!! Lol

There’s some truth to that but the harsher reality is, in 6 seasons and over 90 games, Hartline has 12 TDs. Mike Wallace had 10 last year. You can pull out the YDS/ATT stats for Tannehill but he also threw for over 4,000 yds and 28 TDS so the passing offense was not inept. Hartline catches a ball and usually falls immediately. Him playing at Soldier Field would be awful.

  11. What did Brandon Marshall say or do that was so wrong? I don’t get why everyone is ready to run the guy out of town. It’s funny, at this time last year, everybody was on the “we have the greatest NFL wr duo” bandwagon, and when he spoke up and voiced his opinion about the broken locker room and derailed season, everybody’s calling for his head. Marshall is not our problem, Bears fans… #6 is. I’d be willing to bet money that more players in the locker room are on Marshall’s side than Cutler’s.

I’m sure the guy’s point in posting the 40 time was in regards to the poster that said Hartline was slow.

  13. While I don’t think Marshall has done anything to be run out of town for, and Cutler (sadly) is still our best option at QB, I would not be too upset if neither of them is still around come September. The locker room needs a new vibe.

It probably won’t happen, but Mariota to the Bears at #7 would be interesting.

What did Brandon Marshall say or do that was so wrong?

    _____________________________
Held a needless rambling press conference about his past abuse allegations

Went ballistic in the locker room at least twice, to the point where many teammates left and literally dressed elsewhere after games

Threw his best buddy Cutler under the bus with his “I’d have buyer’s remorse too”.

Insisted on having his Tuesday fly outs to NYC for his TV show when we live in the world of Skype/other telecommunication methods
    _________________________________
Wrong side of 30, more frequently hurt, becoming a distraction and a nuisance. Too much money tied up in him.

  15. Intelligent, average speed and hands, body catcher, below average #2, good #3.

  16. “Threw his best buddy Cutler under the bus with his “I’d have buyer’s remorse too”.”

And I ask you again… Is he wrong? Cutler was the NFL’s highest paid player last year. More than Peyton, more than Watt, etc. etc. He played like hot garbage all season. Went rogue and didn’t run Trestman’s system the way it was supposed to be run.

And how does this affect his play or his team?

Marshall has missed 8 games in his 9 year career dating back to ’06. I guess you’re injury prone when you get your lungs punctured. We don’t have too much $ tied up in him. Too much is tied up with Cutler. Marshall could, in theory, break Cris Carter’s mark for receptions and is paid accordingly to how he has performed. Can’t say the same about Cutler.

  17. If one of the first things this new regime in Chicago does is cut Marshall and sign Hartline, I’m gonna have a bad feeling about Fox and friends….

I agree with what others have said, Marshal is not the problem here. Is he getting to the point where he may be too expensive to carry? Maybe, but I’d give him another year at least. I’d rather see the Bears looking at other free agents than WR.

  18. I agree with who disagrees that Marshall is only a distraction, injury prone, selfish, etc. Brandon has improved a lot both as a player and as an individual during his career. He has always had big numbers but last year, when nothing was working, quite honestly. Last season he was probably the only player on the roster to show passion. He cared. Can you say the same about his ex buddy? I also agree with those who say that there are not many options better than Cutler out there. But, this is even more true for Marshall. Unless you do not take a risk and get rid of him, and instead of a good WR like Hartline (he is good, not great but good for sure), you bring in Andre Johnson and hope he can still make a difference. You take a risk, though, because you could either strike gold or get another Jared Allen (although I expect Jared to perform at much higher level this year). This team is not going to be better without Cutler and Marshall. It is only going to be better if you bring in competent players who can challenge them and win their job. Then, next year you can still clean house, without wasting a ton of money to pay somebody to play for some other team this year.

We get it, you’re in love. All I can say is the new regime shouldn’t be burdened by the previous regime’s bad paper, or unwanted players. A fresh start for the organization. Marshall is not being “run out of town” they just don’t want him around anymore. Make all the bets you want, you’re not in that locker room, so you, me, anyone not inside that room, wouldn’t know, but the word is out via sports radio in Chicago that have sources inside Halas Hall (not the 4 letter station,) the management of the Bears, has had enough of him and the diva act.

  20. I like Hartline and wish him well, but the new Dolphins system is short quick spread out formation passes. Hartline has zero ability to gain any yeards after a catch as he always falls or dives unecessarily. He is not super fast or quick, but is solid and has great hands. Good lockeroom guy etc. He became expendable because of his over $5M salary and his lack of YAC ability which is key to Lazors offense. Some teM will get a great #2 for around $3-4M in my opinion.
