49ers sign Jerome Simpson to two-year deal

Jerome Simpson will attempt to jump-start his career in San Francisco.

Simpson, the former Bengals and Vikings wide receiver, has signed a two-year contract with the 49ers, the club said Thursday.

The 29-year-old Simpson has gained 13.8 yards per catch in his six-year NFL career. He was out of football in 2014 after Minnesota released him in September toward the end of a three-game suspension for a violation of the substance-abuse policy. He also served a three-game ban at the start of the 2012 season after a marijuana-related arrest and plea.

With Michael Crabtree set to be a free agent and Stevie Johnson’s future in San Francisco in question, the 49ers’ receiving corps could undergo some real changes this offseason. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Simpson’s size and athleticism can make him a field-stretching threat, and he certainly has the talent to make the roster, but he’ll probably need to do the little things well, too, in order to stick with San Francisco.

  1. Id like to know what the terms of the contract were for, however this does look like Crabs is gone as well as Johnson (unless significant restructuring).

  2. Another FA WR signing by the Vikings that didn’t go according to plan (Berriman and Craig Jennings also pop to mind) At least they are consistent, they can’t draft a WR to save their life (Troy Williamson and Patterson pop to mind)

But Simpson has a chance which is more than you can say about almost all Ex Vikings, lets hope he uses it.

  3. Another terrible signing. No reason for Simpson to even take training camp reps away from young wide receivers. Going to be another long off-season for the 49ers.

  4. Niners are going backward after releasing Jim. You can feel it right now that they’re not going to be contender for next decade until they get new head coach like Harbaugh. Feel bad for the fans.

  5. Can any 49’ers fan answer a serious question for me as I don’t really pay that much attention to the team. What’s the deal with Quinton Patton? I know he had a lot of promise coming out of college but I’ve never heard anything about him since.

Too funny, I like that. I also like the fact that TT cannot draft defense to save his life, nor even try to make it better by all means possible. I bet the Packer fans would salivate over Terrance Knighton or Wilfolk…the ultimate 3-4 plugs….but alas Letroy Guion will be back in there even with money in the cap. Has to frustrating for fans.

I hear it is a bad year for ILB, both 7th rounders and free agents…Back to the Packers comes AJ Hawk…at a reduced rate of course..and Aaron Rodger just makes it alright…

  7. Simpson has speed and is not afraid over the middle. He took some bit hits on square ins, held the ball and popped up.

The Vikings gave him several chances and hopefully he has learned his lesson..Just keep him out of his car in parks at night and he will be a nice receiver for the 9ers…

  8. It’s funny how happy the Viking fans are when they finally got an average QB.

  9. This guy has more lives than a cat. And as to the comment above, if you lived with Christian Ponder for 3 years, you’d be a tad giddy right now as well.

  10. The Niners have been looking at Simpson for the past few years. There’s obviously something they like about him. I’m pretty sure Crabtree will be gone, but this is in no way a replacement for him. I’m thinking we’ll hold onto Stevie Johnson and just restructure his deal, if he’s willing. I like Crabtree but I think he wants to much money. I’d be excited to see Stevie Johnson as the actual #2 getting more playing time. He is definitely capable of doing more. But it’s all going to be on Kaep and if he improves this year. Nor we’ll be in a similar spot as last year.

  11. He should be a number 4 depth guy, hope he was cheap. They need a good free agent wr and to draft one in the first 2 rounds.

  12. Not a surprise considering he played for Coach Bennett at Coastal Carolina and Coach Tomsula worked for Bennett.

  13. What is it with the NFC West and mediocre wide receivers? It’s like they compete to see who can have the most J.A.G.S every year.

  14. He is probably hitting his bong and snorting some coke in celebration right now.

I am sure the contract offers little to nothing in the way on guaranteed money. Enough signing bonus for a bag of weed and some toot.

Simpson showed signs of turning into a good player. Problem is, he can’t have money and not get into trouble.

  15. When he is on, he can be very good. Consistency issues will likely remain, though.

Best of luck to the 9er’s fans. I hope this guy has figured it out.

  16. Wait until training camp, he’ll make circus catches one after the other and everyone will think this kids is gonna be a difference maker. Then the regular season will start. Good luck San Fran.

Quinton Patton is a sharp kid. Has a good repor with the other guys on the team and is real eager to get on the field. The two things that held him back last year:
    1. Him being a young WR in the NFL in the shadow of Anquan Boldin & Crabtree. Then Stevie Johnson came in so he was a #4 wideout in the best of circumstances.
    2. The NINERS had a bit of a problem with their offense last season. They didn’t do a good job planing how to use their weapons. They didn’t have the luxury (very often) to get anyone but their best guys on the field since they were playing from behind often. When your down by 7+, you don’t go to your #4 guy…maybe they should have.

So much for “winning with class”, eh JedYork??

  19. 2 years for under $2 million and no guaranteed money, hell yeah, I’d take a chance. If he even gets over 500 yards for the season, it was a good signing.

  20. Great talent but poor choice maker. still made one of the greatest catches in NFL. Good luck and I hope you don’t haunt us in the playoffs.
