Jets are expected to cut Harvin on Monday

In Houston, the Texans refuse to cut receiver Andre Johnson because they think someone is going to offer to make a trade for his $11.5 million payroll burden in 2015.  In New York, the Jets could do the same thing with receiver Percy Harvin and his $10.5 million payroll burden in 2015.

The Jets most likely won’t.

Per a league source, the Jets are expected to release Harvin on Monday, three days after trading for receiver Brandon Marshall.  In theory, the Jets could squat on Harvin until March 19, at which time the sixth-round pick they gave the Seahawks to get Harvin becomes a fourth-rounder.  For now, the plan is to let him go — putting him on the market for the first day of free agency.

The teams to watch continue to be the Chargers, Packers, and Patriots.  Harvin may be inclined to do a reasonable one-year deal in the hopes of teaming up with a great quarterback and re-establishing himself as a premier weapon.  Still only 26, Harvin could have plenty of solid years left — and he could end up cashing in next year if he manages to get through a full season as a model citizen who performs at a high level and shows true durability.

It’s unclear whether the Jets and Harvin made any progress toward a revised deal.  Harvin reportedly was not inclined to reduce his pay for 2015, although a restructuring may have been possible.

  1. Head case. So glad Seattle was stupid enough to give up all those draft picks for him. He’ll look good in green and gold, oh, wait, the Packers just overpaid Cobb.

  2. As a Packers fan I would sign him for 1 year. Finally have a return man. Keep the tight end on the sideline and go 4 WR sets sometimes with Cobb and Harvin in the slots and Jordy and Adams outside. With Rodgers and Lacy it would be lethal.

  3. Too much money for low production.

‘Spose he’ll someday regret booting himself from Seattle where he could still be making big money?

  4. Again, the Texans aren’t cutting Johnson now because they save $3 million in cap space if they don’t cut him until this summer.

  5. Danny Amendola gets released, Harvin jumps on board for a one year ‘prove it’ deal for a few dollars less? Could see that scenario unfolding.

  6. I assume the reason hes linked to GB is because he will be cut so he wont technically be a UFA. So signing him wont count against any comp picks they are likely to get from FA losses this year. Ted might love comp picks more than life itself.

Still find it highly unlikely that GB would sign him but stranger things have happened.

  7. I honestly think there’s a pretty good chance he comes back to MN. He hated Ponder, and Childress. He wants to win. Zimmer I think wants to win, and I bet Harvin would like Tbridge, and of course his pal AD is still with us… unless he aint.

50/50. I’d like to see him back.

  8. Marshall and Harvin aren’t close to the same WRs. If the Jets can pay Harvin, they should keep them both and put a trio of real NFL WR’s on the field for the first time since color TV.

Geno Smith deserves it as much as any QB in the league.

    And illegal.

  10. htown – I’m pretty sure they can cut Johnson now and still count the $3 mil towards next year’s cap. They just have to designate him as a “post-June 1st” release when they cut him.

  11. Funny when Carroll said he was going to put him on IR that he suddenly got well enough to play. Anyone that signs him needs to be laughed at…..

  12. For a player who is supposed to be so gifted, Harvin can’t seem t find a home. Obviously has some mental problems or attitude problems. Maybe both? If I were running a team, I wouldn’t want Harvin on my roster. That would be like paying for a pain n the……

  13. Patriots wanted to draft him originally, but he was taken the pick before them, and they traded out as a result….i could see them cutting amendola and giving this guy a shot…i think he realizes at this point that if he is a locker room headache his career is over…if he signs with the pats this year on a one year deal i bet everyone will be oogling over him next year again…percy was once one of the main threats in the nfl and still has the talent do be that again with the right coach, quarterback, and organization that doesn’t have room for his ego..

  14. The guy was unhappy in MN with a lousy QB, was unhappy on a SB team with a good QB, and thus will be an unhappy pain in the rear with his next team no matter what.

Patriots if he wants a ring, Raiders if he wants the money.

Or to the Vikings, wait… oops, nevermind

  16. Well, no matter what’s in store for Percy’s future he’ll always have his memories in that epic 2nd half run back that virtually sealed a SB win…with Broncos all around Percy, nobody got a finger on him…such quickness.

  17. It would be hilarious if he came back to MN after getting all those draft picks from Seattle 2 years ago.

  18. I assumed the Packers would have no interest in Harvin, since they just signed Cobb to a gigantic contract, they still have Nelson signed to a gigantic contract, they drafted three wide receivers last year, and they’re planning on drafting two more this year. Then I come here and all their fans are begging for the former Viking. I guess this is what passes for logic in Green Bay.

    **************************

Dude, you can cut him now and designate him a Post June 1st cut. And its an “ADDITIONAL” $2.675M in cap space. They cut him now its $8.825M savings, post June 1 its $11.5

I love people who have no idea what they are talking about.

  20. Welcome to Toronto Percy. You remember Tim (Tebow) from your days at Florida?!

    🙂 LOL

Actually, Toronto has more sense than to sign his CANCER

  21. I can absolutely see him in New England. What I can’t understand, is why everyone wants to cut Amendola. He has very good value to The Patriots. Simply restructure his deal. He stayed healthy this year and became very productive in the second half of the season. His rapport with Brady got significantly better and he was outstanding on special teams. Keep him.

  22. Three teams in how many years?

Hoping it’s three strikes and you’re out for this tool. There’s gonna be guys available in the 3rd round of the draft this year who can do everything he can, will come at a fraction of the price and without the drama.

Hope he’s prepared for civilian life but I’m pretty sure he’s not.

Why wouldn’t the Packers want him? At least Rodgers and the trolls can blame him for their choking.

  24. Why whenever a trouble, talented player is available the Pats
are a potential landing spot?? Because serial killers and cheaters
    Look good in the uniform.

  25. Wait! I didn’t think the Packers signed ex-Vikings players. How can they be interested?

  26. To the commenter talking about keeping Harvin for Geno.

Dude, the guy is getting his legit chance without Harvin. He’s got Marshall, Decker (who thrives with a real #1), Kerley (Percy won’t be taking away his snaps) and Amaro. And yes, the stretch he had at the end of the season he earned the right to start as long as he doesn’t get beat out in camp.

  27. Please not the Pats for this waste of oxygen.

Pats have excellent receivers already and need to keep as much of the defense intact as possible. And since Wilfork and McCourty will probably go for the money they need to grab defensive FAs and draft high picks on that side of the ball as well. Toss in a couple Olinemen for backups and the Pats will be in good shape.

Definitely don’t need this head case.

  28. Dude is a self-absorbed head-case.
Favre made him look GREAT as a a rookie.

And he had his BEST year when PONDER was throwing him 3 zillion check-down passes he turned into huge YAC.

And everywhere he has gone.. .he CANT STAY ON THE FIELD.

  29. No way the Packers sign him. In a perfect world he could come in and go all Desmond Howard for a year, but he brings way too much baggage and he’s never really shown he could live up to his potential for an entire year. Plus, I believe Abbrederis will be more than sufficient at returns next year.

  30. There is no denying that Percy has great athletic talent, it’s a shame he refuses to change his ways so he can take advantage of it. I remember when he went to the Jets, he was crowing about how they told him he could just be himself, and he wasn’t ever going to change. I’m too lazy to dig up the quote.

I’m sure some team will make him an offer, thinking that if they can just tap into his potential…

But if he thinks he’s getting a deal for 8 figures a year after the last several years’ antics, he needs to be handed the plastic cup.

  31. I highly doubt the Pack would even think of signing him. TT doesn’t allow divas on the team. See Greg Jennings. If you know anything about the Packers approach to FA, it will not happen. GB already has plenty of great receivers..

  32. Green Bay probably won’t sign him now that they resigned Cobb. They’ve got too much depth at WR.

  33. Really. Explain to the NYJ fans that they wouldn’t prefer a 4th round selection to a 6th rounder if NYJ were going to dump Harvin. No chance.

  34. TOTALLY my bad!! Disregard my above comment please! I certainly should’ve know better about the Harvin trade b/w Seattle and NYJ!!! Blame it on the deutcsh beer (AnBev) – LOL.

  35. “I assumed the Packers would have no interest in Harvin, since they just signed Cobb to a gigantic contract, they still have Nelson signed to a gigantic contract, they drafted three wide receivers last year….”

Correct….& that’s why TT will not sign Harvin.

    Zero chance.

TT will sign a minimum wage FA to compete with Hyde for kickoff and punt return duties.

Cobb is done with both of these roles.

  36. No need to disrupt the Patriots mojo with this guy–even if Belichick is great at attitude adjustments.

Randy Moss for a few years was one thing, he was “that good” when he felt like it.

Percy Harvin is no Randy Moss. Not worth the headache.

  37. How much would it cost them to keep him till the 19th? seems to me that a few million could possibly be worth the better draft spot.

  38. He’s an amazing talent. I still remember him in the super bowl blowing by the Broncos on that kick return. But he comes with a huge burden. He’s trouble. Waste of talent is right.

  39. Can’t see him in GB just because they play on grass, and in the cold. So six divisional games on grass (until the Vikes new stadium is done). Harvin, when he’s playing, seems like a better fit for team with turf.

  40. Someone on YouTube asked if the Seahawks would ever re-sign Harvin. Uh, there’s no way in hell that’s ever happening, but it would be funny if it did. “Thanks for the draft pick Jets! Oh, by the way, we’ll take our player back too.”

You have no reading comprehension, I see no Packer fans begging, I see Packer fans trying to come to terms with it if it happens. I don’t think we need him nor do I want him but TT may bring him on at the right price with no strings. It would be funny though if they did and being with such a high class organization with great facilities, winning culture, great QB and awesome fans, he could finally find some peace and adjust his attitude.

  42. In Teddy We Trust

Come on man. You’re throwing stones in calm ponds. One guy…one…suggested Pervy as a Return Specialist. One guy.

“…all the Packer fans are begging…….”

No. No one is. Grow up.

Yet both of those WRs are making less than Jennings’ 5 year 45M contract haha.
