Torrey Smith says goodbye to Baltimore

AP

Torrey Smith can’t officially sign with another team until Tuesday. But he already knows he’s leaving Baltimore.

Smith, the soon-to-be free agent wide receiver who has spent his entire career with the Ravens, wrote an open letter today thanking the team, his coaches, teammates and fans for four good years together.

I will be playing for a different organization, but I will remain committed to the City of Baltimore,” Smith wrote. “I will continue to give back and help build a better future for our young men and women. MY COMMITMENT TO THE CITY IS FOR LIFE. This isn’t a goodbye because I will still be around and Baltimore will continue to be my home in the offseason and when my career is done. I’m on to the next chapter of my life and football career, but I will see you guys later.”

Smith didn’t say where he’s heading next, but he’s reportedly ready to agree to a contract with the 49ers as soon as he can legally do so, on Tuesday.

  1. Such a class act and positive role model on and off the field. We wish you the best Torrey wherever you go but will never forget the four years and the 100 percent effort you gave on every play. Thanks for everything and best of luck in the future!

  2. Ravens are losing a great person as is the city. Torrey has to do what’s right for his family and future. Great to see he will make MD home, now that’s dedication. Good luck!

  3. Thank god! No Rice No Jacoby No Torrey Smith.. That’s 3/4 of what made joe Flacco half way decent

  4. Still like the guy, but a little pissed he turned down a 7mill/year extension. He’s gonna be very disappointed the next 4 yrs in sf watching us win while they lose and his numbers dip.

  5. I remember the game after his brother died he scored 2 tds. Tough player who genuinely cared for those around him. Respect

  6. We’re going to miss you Torrey. You really grew on me and I love you as a player. Not only will you be missed on the field but also in the community. Best of luck to you with the rest of your career.

  7. Looks like the Ravens are going back to free agency to fill holes in their WR corp. They certainly can’t rely on the draft to do it. Torrey Smith was probably the best WR Ozzie has drafted in a decade…and that’s pretty alarming considering he’s no better than a #2.

  8. blackandgold dude were you asleep all last season? Flacco had great year. No Rice, 9 catches from Jacoby, and T Smith had a down season. Oh, and I shouldn’t forget they managed to dominate the Steelers at home, in the playoffs, when it mattered most.

  9. He’s a classy dude. Expected he’d be a Raven for life. But if indeed it is San Fran his numbers will slip further. Like it or not Kaep doesn’t have the same passing ability and Torrey doesn’t fight as hard for the bad ones like Q does/did.

  10. What a classy guy! I’ll miss him…Wait, no I won’t, my new favorite team is wherever he is!

  11. Only Redskins matter in the state of Maryland?! Haha! Hilarious. They’re called the Washington Redskins and their practice facility and training camp locations are in Virginia…

Torrey is a University of Maryland product…right down the street from the Ravens. Shame to see him go after he’s given the area so much. Best of luck, Torrey.

  12. I think the Ravens need a big bodied #1 like Vincent Jackson in his prime. I think the kid Jaelen Strong would be nice.Torrey Smith was a good baller and a great person.

  13. yo blackandgold…..no dick lebeau…Polamalu…no Kiesel and an ANCIENT Little Ben.

Oh and LeVeon smoking blunts for 4 weeks.

  14. Thanks for the memories Torrey! If it doesn’t work out in Frisco, come on home.

Seems to me if you’re going to make excuses that you might want to include the Ravens won against a team that was missing the AFC’s leading rusher and leader in all purpose yards.

How’s that Flacco contract working out for you now?

  16. With Torrey gone, the Ravens will probably go after Percy Harvin to replace him. His personality fits in with the Ravens ‘scumbag’ mindset a lot better anyway.

  17. Great kid, decent WR. Wish him luck. I have a feeling he may be a Cris Carter as Baltimore has said they need him to do more than ‘just catch touchdowns’.

  18. Bull Rush, besides the Steelers who did the Ravens beat last year? What good teams did Joe have good games against? Smith is gone, Forsett and Pitta are likely too. Consider that and Joe’s third new offense is as many years is not looking well for the Ravens.

  19. @Torrey Smith:

    Congrats,thanks and best of luck

    @stillerswillbefine:

“we’ll be fine”…and you know we will.

    @PCa survivor:

We don’t care about #1 rushers. He’ll get two chances to put up more than 59 yards against the Ravens this year. Flacco’s contract is dandy and thanks for asking.

    @ logical voice

  20. Torrey is a legit deep threat but signing with SF? Don’t see that being a good fit. A run first and not so accurate QB doesn’t exactly scream success…

—————————————————————-Yeah let me guess… The year you went to Super Bowl, nope, Denver did and as a Bengals fan, you didn’t make Super Bowl, therefore, you didn’t do what “matters most.”

  22. Receiving corps in Pittsburgh is looking much better than whats left of the Ravens gutted crew. If the Ravens dont land some sort of deep threat it could be a very ugly year in Ravens territory #gosteelers

  23. The game winning catch in Pittsburgh after dropping one right before it, and running right by Champ Bailey in Denver during the Super Bowl run are two plays I’ll remember the most. Great guy, but unfortunately not a true #1.

  24. Bathtime Bens 2015 cap hit: 18.4 million
Joe Cools 2015 cap hit: 14.5 million

They must not teach much book learnin up thar in squeelburg, they can’t even do simple math. Follow me here Pennsylvania public schools, I’ll go real slow. 18, is a BIGGER number than 14. That means that when you have 18 of something, you have more than someone who has 14 of something. Not sure any of this will actually land but I tried my best.

  25. Torrey still can’t run routes, he can run a fly route and that’s pretty much it. Three if Flacco’s int’s were caused by incorrect routes and slipping on routes because he cuts with the wrong foot. He made out with the niners overpaying him.

  26. This is a mistake by the Ravens. Half of their offense is Flacco throwing the ball as hard as he can without reading the defense while T. Smith sells a PI call….

  27. Lol “Dominate” is kinda harsh .. Yeah they won (1st time in 4 playoff tries) but “dominate” they didn’t . IJS who’s left? Steve Smith? Pitta may be gone too right?

  28. youplayinfoosball, what do you think will happen when/if Flacco restructures his massive cap hits? Those hits will continue to get pushed back and will make their cap hell even worse. The Ravens are going nowhere any time soon.

    =
Is this guy serious? The Steelers are the kings of restructuring bad contracts.

Here’s some more math for you:

    Flacco 2016 Cap Hit: $28,500,000

That’s top of the list for ya – not only at the QB position…but the whole LEAGUE.

    2017 you say?

    $31,150,000

  31. The salary cap geniuses on this site amaze me. They’re so knowledgeable!!! There are many NFL teams desparate for your contributions–please apply!!!

  32. What’s about to unfold in Baltimore is going to leave me on the floor laughing.

  33. MostcensoredposteronPFT, my intent wasn’t to deny Steelers restructurings, but to bring to light that even tho Joe has a team friendly number thru the first 3 years, the last 3 years will be cap hell, even after a restructure. $.50 per dollar restrured is pushed to the next year(I believe that’s how it works).

As for the Steelers restructures go, they must be doing something right, 3 SB appearances in the last 11 seasons with 2 wins.

  34. steelerswillbefine, a restructure usually comes with an extension. The restructure part usually converts base salary into bonus which is then spread out over the contract like the bonuses previously paid out. The extension allows the bonues to spread out further like a lump of peanut butter across bread. On top of that the cap itself will continue to rise at dramatic rates.

This is all common now. I have to think that if Flacco’s contract was as bad as you make it out to be someone with much more cap knowledge than us would have said so by now.

  35. 2 things:
    1) While Torrey was a nice guy, if the ball was anywhere near contested or away from his body, he didn’t get it. He didn’t have fight in him when it came to the ball.
    2) Even Flacco’s agent has said the contract was a 3 year contract and would be extended to smooth things out after year 3. It wasn’t a 6 year, 120 million contract, it was a 3 year 63 million contract in essence. That being said, Flacco’s cap hit even this year isn’t as high as the top 10 or 15 QB contracts in the league, so we can stop with the ‘How’s Flacco’s contract doing for you?” comments. Ngata’s contract is more of a cap hit than Flacco’s, IIRC.

  36. spartan01, as a Steeler fan I’ve been watching Ben do this for several years. His cap hit is 18 million due to restructuring. He signed a 8 year 103 million deal with and average less then 13 million. He never had a cap number near 27 million and restructuring that number can only go so far before the piper is paid. The Ravens cap situation is worse then the Steelers, so yea the contract isn’t the issue this year but will be over Joe’s remaining tenure in Baltimore.

  37. To add, I believe in Flacco’s contract his base salary balloons next year to $18M (from $4M this year) and stays high after that. Which is why his cap balloons. Which is also why everyone, even his agent called it a three year deal. That base salary is $18M of his $28M cap hit.

Let’s say he converts $15M to a signing bonus and adds two years. $3M of that hits the cap. His $3M base hits the cap, and past monies somewhere around $10M probably hit the cap and he’s back to a $16M cap number.

  38. “His cap hit is 18 million due to restructuring”

Actually his cap is $18M because his base salary is $11.6M this year. The difference ($6.8M) is the restructuring bonuses of ’11, ’12, and ’13 spread out. That’s not so bad at all.

  39. spartan01, I can respect the Ravens, other than the Steelers, they are the only AFCN team that isn’t a complete dumpster fire of a franchise. There is nothing any Flacco supporter can say that will make me believe, even with restructuring, that this was a good contract. There are better QBs making less.

  40. Torrey had a lot of upside when he joined the league, but it never materialized. He is a burner that can’t catch with his hands or run routes. He is also a cap casualty. If he ran routes and caught with his hands, he’d ne signed to the Ravens today.

Also, all you outsiders can laugh all you want, but in the Flacco/Harbaugh era, they have only missed the postseason 1 year.

  41. steelerswillbefine, we could on like this forever but as soon as you say there are better QBs making less it gets subjective. Take away Ben and Brady and its opinion after that. Luck is still on his rookie contract. Rodgers is paid the most. Flacco is about on par with Matt Ryan, Brees, Kaepernick, Stafford, and Romo. Even Alex Smith made $17M last year.

Ben should be paid more, no question. Brady? just because I don’t like him I could care less.
