Despite some confusion, the Texans are not signing Tim Tebow

What could make an already big day in the NFL even bigger? Tim Tebow!

That’s what the folks at ESPN figured when they threw Tebow into the mix in a segment on today’s NFL Live. The segment was called “Overreaction Monday,” and it was intended to be a discussion of some over-the-top news items that could happen, but didn’t actually happen. One of those things was the quarterback-needy Texans signing Tebow.

The only problem was the ESPN illustrated the segment with what looked like a real breaking news graphic, and some people saw it and thought it was an actual breaking news update, and not just a discussion of a hypothetical. People were freaking out on Twitter, and some members of the media even bought it.

Tebow wants to come back to the NFL and may participate in the veteran combine to show teams what he can do. But the reality is, Tebow is still the same guy he was when he couldn’t find a job in the 2013 or 2014 seasons. A team is going to have to get extremely desperate at the quarterback position to sign Tebow, and the Texans aren’t that desperate. At least not yet.

  1. Give the guy credit for trying. Don’t think it’ll happen. Hopefully his upbringing and past don’t psychological destroy him for failing at something most people never achieve.

  2. I still think he deserved a real shot at a starting position after helping the Broncos get to and win a playoff game. Even if his throws weren’t great, his scrambling ability was as good as any of the other so-called stars like Manziel or Kaepernick, and those guys seem to get chance after chance. Basically he was blackballed for some reason the NFL won’t admit to.

  3. would be fun to watch Tebow pull another miraculous run. Besides, the texans is another wasted team anyway.

  4. The real news is that Mallett resigned for two years and Hoyer (horrors) is also headed there. Unless he signs with the Jets…..

  5. The only way Tebow gets signed is if Rex hires Sporano and they put together a 100% wildcat offense. (Sporano was the one who pulled the wildcat out of a hat a few years back and he killed the Patriots with it – that 1 game.)

In other words, nobody is signing Tebow.

  6. If Belichick couldn’t make it work with Tebow, nobody else will.
    He’s a good guy,but below average QB.

  7. One specific thing that I’ve always seen as a truly bad sign for Tim Tebow, is the sad fact that the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, his hometown team and seemingly constant losers, genuinely believe he is not even good enough to make their team. If the Jags feel that way about you…than the general outlook for you elsewhere is bleak.

  8. Funny all the people around here that think they know the inner working/thinking of all 32 teams…..Tebow could get signed by any one of 32 different teams, depending on how he does at the veteran combine. Chances are slim, but so is winning the lottery, something I bet most do at one time or another!

At least Tebow got to do something virtually 100% of the commenters here can only dream about….playing in the NFL!

  9. Unless Tebow has been working relentlessly on his mechanics, so much so that it’s obvious at the Veteran Combine, no team will pick him up. If he has not done that, then we will all know he is not really serious about making a comeback. In that eventuality, let’s stop, once and for all, talking about this guy. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

  10. This guy would be in the league if his ego would allow him to play FB/H-Back/TE.

  11. The sad thing about Tebow is that he might have made it as a backup somewhere if not for the absolute circus that seems to follow him wherever he goes. It just isn’t worth it for a team to go through that madness for a marginal player. This is in large part due to his vocal supporters, who have ironically deified the man to the point where he can do no wrong. If he were just a normal guy he might have a chance. It isn’t fair to him, but I have a feeling he will be just fine.

  12. Maybe if he’d put aside his ego and play fullback instead of a quarterback he’d still be playing the NFL. However, with all that being said, I thought it was a mistake for the Broncos to let him go and I think he should have one more chance if he doesn’t make it then let him go away forever but honestly he’s better than Manziel, Henne, and a couple other guys playing QB in the NFL.

  13. How do people “know” he could make as a TE, hback, or whatever. There’s a big difference scrambling as a QB than other positions. Can he even catch well?

  14. Tebow was exciting to watch @ Florida. He was even more exciting in Denver, couldn’t believe all those come from behind wins, with a defense rated 24th in the league no less. I’d pay to see him play again. I wouldn’t pay to see Gino Smith, Matt Cassell, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Lindley, Brian Hoyer, Sam Bradford, Jay Cutler, Blaine Gabbert. All these guys have great throwing motions and are not very good, plus they are not exciting. And they are in the NFL?

couldnt agree more with that list (minus cutler. as a bronco fan, i’d pay to see him burst into flames…figuratively speaking)

I hope he gets another chance

He already said he would do whatever a team asked. Yet you people keep repeating the same line over and over.

  17. Tebow’s problem was his feet. (Yes his slower delivery did not help with NFL windows, but that can be overcome – see Phillip Rivers.)

Tebow’s problem stemmed from wanting to run too quick. He never learned to work the pocket and it got to the point that he would start running and throw without tracking because he got too hurried.

With all that said and considering Tebow’s attitude and work ethic – it most likely can be fixed.

Denver was the perfect situation to fix it behind Peyton, but Horse Face did not have the patience or desire the distractions. Pity – because I think Tebow would have been a valuable asset for the Broncos post Peyton (instead of Elway’s hand picked successor with one year of college starting experience).

Those that think Tebow can’t throw need to go look at his last college game where he set the completion Sugar Bowl record. The problem is there’s a huge transition from Urban Meyer’s offense to a traditional NFL O for a QB. Combine that with admitted poor mechanics and the number of media haters – was a lot to overcome.

Reports are that Tebow’s overall mechanics have improved by working with a couple QB gurus and relentless workouts. I guess we will find out at the Vet’s combine.

In the end people forget that a QB’s job is to LEAD the team, MOVE the offense and WIN.

Even if Tebow’s accuracy has improved there is still the issue of how slow he is on reading and recognizing defenses. And his failure to read defenses happens to be why he has to scramble so much.

In a QB driven league if he could play the position someone would sign him.

If Tebow wanted to be an NFL player he should’ve been working with a receivers coach and a blocking coach. Could make a decent 3rd down back, especially if you get him the ball out in space.

  19. Apparently there isn’t enough real NFL news happening right now. Better to discuss hypothetical signings than discuss the actual contracts being hammered out at this very moment. Play make believe in the summer all you want.

  20. I don’t think he will be signed as a QB to start. He had an outside chance at a backup QB in Miami with some possible TE or short yardage RB looks. For close to minimum he might be a decent risk and we all know Ross loves attention

  21. I believe nfl blackballed him because he used Jesus consistently. Tebow is way better than most qbs out there to be quite honest

  22. Yep, same guy that beat the Steelers in the playoffs and the same guy that has won the same amount of rings in Denver as Peyton.

  23. Hey Judge, the previous justifications supporting the application of free expression to the media have now expired . . .
