Devin McCourty: The Patriots stepped up financially

The Patriots opted not to use their franchise tag on safety Devin McCourty, but they won’t run the risk of losing McCourty as a free agent after re-signing him on Sunday.

According to multiple sources, McCourty signed a five-year deal with $28.5 million guaranteed and a total value of $47.5 million should McCourty play out the life of the deal. During an interview with CSN New England on Sunday night, McCourty said that he was close to making a deal with one of the other teams pursuing him — the Giants, Titans, Eagles and Jaguars were all bidding — but that the Patriots offered the best mix of money and opportunity to win.

“We wanted to be happy and we wanted to win,” McCourty said. “We felt we had an opportunity . . . at really all those places, we saw ways we could win. Obviously being in New England for five years, there’s no kind of mystery or question. I know we can win here. We’ve already done it. That’s where [the Patriots] came in first in that category. And financially they stepped up and hit all the numbers that I wanted. I think that’s what matters, what was going to make me happy.”

With McCourty’s return assured, the Patriots will now be dealing with finding agreement with cornerback Darrelle Revis on a contract that pays him less than the fully guaranteed $20 million he’s set to make if he’s on the roster when the new league year opens on Tuesday.

  1. Man Belichick is gonna a deal with Revis also.. If he pays Dmac the most Gtd money for a saftey in NFL history.. Imagine what he is gonna give to Revis when they have to spend cash or else write a check to NFLPA..

  2. Bummer. Would have liked to see my Bears make a run at him, but there’s no way the McCaskey’s are going to fork over that kind of dough.

  3. Meanwhile all the petty NE haters in NY, Buff, Miami,,,spend themselves into SALARY CAP HELL,,,with has beens and wannabees (Marshall, Suh, MCCOY,,etc etc). You can’t mortage your entire future (114 mil) in the hopes he is the key to winning….

  4. I think McCourtys great but at $10m a year I feel less safe about Revised also getting done. Secondary becoming really expensive….

  5. Wanted him on NYG but totally understand him staying for that. Glad he isn’t an Eagle. Congrats Pats.

  6. Aww too bad, the Jets could had used him; Neverless now it’s close watch on Revis’s Island camp now..

Hopefully Mevis is at his usual greedy player, and forcing Pat to release him, then Revis will go to team who has highest bidding.

  7. And don’t worry Devin…you will WIN!!
Let’s go get one for the thumb boys!!!

  8. Now let’s get some key players on the front D-Line to replace VW and get some pass rush going.

We do not need Revis if you have a top five D-Line.

  9. “During an interview with CSN New England on Sunday night, McCourty said that he was close to making a deal with one of the other teams pursuing him — the Giants, Titans, Eagles and Jaguars were all bidding ”

    You mean tampering?

  10. Good luck with Revis he’s got his ring its now all about money from now on in. Having said that how much more does theses guys need after amassing vast sums already surely it’s all about the gongs now.

  11. Fantastic signing for an all-in-every-play type player who is a leader on and off the field.

Patriots do pay for the right player.

  12. All the chicken little types with “the sky is falling” attitude I hope you can just chill now and have faith. And to all you anti pats jokers who wanted to insert MCourty into your line up, keep dreaming.

  13. I like McCourty but that is A LOT of money for him. He played well this year… with Revis there. He was a good safety, but not a top safety until this year. But hey, if they resign Revis I guess he can continue being a top safety.

  14. We will find out today on Revis. Supposedly it’s between the Patriots and the Jets. The Patriots hate to pay, but Revis was the difference-maker this year in the playoffs. He has some great leverage right now.

  15. Given that Tom Brady won’t be able to use deflated balls this year for an advantage, he should accept a pay cut so they can pay Revis.

Tom won’t have to pay the ball boy this year to deflate the balls, so it should be a break even.

  16. As a Titans fan, you’re welcome, Devin. We’re happy Music City could serve you and your brother (one of our favorite players) as a negotiating ploy as the two of you launched your viral Devin is Coming to Nashville campaign. :^)

  17. 1. It’s difficult for players who have been with the Patriots for several successful seasons to embrace a rebuilding or unknown situation.

    2. The Patriots have a reputation for being aggressive ” cap hawks” , yet they find themselves under tight salary cap constraints, proving that you just can’t pay everyone.
    .

  18. Eagles reportedly offered more money. Money is not everything all the time. Some players actually value stability and a Superbowl winning tradition with a coach and QB in place that make it happen. Not always, but the Eagles? No Lomabardi, no Lombardi, and not going to get one this year either. Had to be fun thinking McCourty would be in that puke green uni though.

  19. “You mean tampering?”

He was a free agent. All teams were allowed to talk to FAs agents over the weekend.

The Jets are the only ones who’ve been tampering with the Pats so far

  20. Everyone in the defensive backfield is signed, including Revis. Now let’s see if the the Pats extend Revis, pay his bonus, or let him walk be not doing either.

From Revis’ standpoint, the McCourty signing indicates the Patriots are doing what it takes to repeat so if he wants to win this is a great fit for him.

You realize of course, that NE is already over the cap by about $10 million, far more than any of the teams in the division.

  22. I love how the Pat fans have one of the greatest qb’s in history and they act like its a genius move to try and not leak points on defense like a rusty roof. Brady’s window is closing and just like Peyton those legs can’t hold the team on it’s back forever.

Please don’t compare Brady to Manning any longer.

Brady has four SB rings, to Manning’s one.

    No comparison

  24. Let’s get the PASS RUSH PARTY going.

Strengthen the D-LINE already, it was rated DEAD LAST in short yardage against the run and 18th overall.

Turn the D-LINE into a top 5 with FA and you will not need Revis.
