At a time when the Bills are loading up the wagon with newcomers, they’ve found a way to keep one of their best defensive players in town.
As the team has announced, defensive end Jerry Hughes has signed a contract to stay put in Buffalo. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the package pays out $17.625 million at signing.
The money comes from a $7 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $4.625 million in 2015, and a guaranteed $6 million option bonus due in 2016.
The deal also includes a $4.525 million base salary guaranteed for injury at signing, fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2016 league year.
The 2017 package consists of a $5.4 million base salary and a $2 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. In 2018, Hughes gets $6.35 million in salary, with a $1 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. For 2109, he’ll be paid a $6.35 million salary, with a roster bonus of $1 million due on the fifth day of the league year.
Hughes also can earn a workout bonus of $150,000 each year, adding another $750,000 to the total pile of $45 million.
The cap numbers are $6.175 million in 2015, $7.575 million in 2016, $10.45 million in 2017, $10.4 million in 2018, and $10.4 million in 2019.
