Report: Raiders reach deal with Rodney Hudson

Getty Images

The Raiders are spending big to lure away the top center in free agency from a division rival.

Oakland has reached a five-year, $44.5 million contract with Chiefs center Rodney Hudson, Jason La Canfora of CBS reported Monday morning.

The 25-year-old Hudson is PFT’s 23rd-ranked free agent.

For Oakland, the Hudson deal would be a nice victory after other presumed free agent targets have seemingly turned their attention elsewhere. For Kansas City, the loss of Hudson is a setback after striking a potential deal with wideout Jeremy Maclin Sunday night.

Hudson’s pending arrival in Oakland all but closes the door on center Stefen Wisniewski’s return to the club. Wisniewski, like Hudson, is in his prime, so he should be able to find a good job elsewhere.

  1. Too bad we don’t have the money to retain Wiz. I mean, there’s absolutely no need to maintain any sort of continuity or depth on the team.

  2. Nine million a year for a Center is a great deal, plus playing on offense he won’t be getting that many snaps to earn that money.

  3. A center is worth 8+ million a year? OK
I want to know why Reggie hasn’t/didn’t go after Maclin or Thomas. It’s not like Carr has anyone to throw the ball to

  4. Good signing for Oakland. the NFL should begin its league year beginning with the legal tampering period. As usual, the NFL finds itself maintaining a fuzzy set of rules. While this is more benign than disciplinary rules and the management of game balls, it’s the same BS all over again. I see where Robert Kraft has been more conciliatory towards Goodell. All I can say is that it’s a good thing that Kraft is a bit more discerning in the running of his football team than he is in running the league.

  5. I knew they’d have to pay stupid money, and they did it!

Only the faid pays a center LT money.

He’s good, but he ain’t worth that. When you’re the faiders, you have to overpay at every position to get people to come to the worst situation possible in sports.

  6. A second coming of Steve Wisniewski is what the Raiders need. Stefan never equaled that level of play. Wiz the 1st was a mauler.

  7. Now go get Knighton, Draft Amari Cooper and an ILB with the 2nd and maybe…just maybe I’ll forget we didn’t get Cobb or Suh.

  8. Like O-Line Coach Mike Tice, the engine of the team is the offensive line. It all starts there and the amount paid had to be done.

  9. Best O lineman the Chiefs had last year. Sorry to see him go, especially to a division rival.

  10. Ppl, the Raiders have more money than they are able to sign. Big contract yes, but thats what it takes to sign talent. Raiders have plenty of cap space, this isn’t ridiculous

  11. Look at the targets we’ve seen reported that the Raiders are going after. Cobb was the only explosion player. Iupati, Gresham and Hudson. All maulers in the blocking game.

Cobb would have been nice but I think Reggie’s plan is to get physical and get Carr targets in the draft he can grow with. Build a power running game and let the offense grow from the inside out.

Demarco Murray and Latavious Murray wouldn’t be a bad duo to run behind this group.

  12. Darn, I didn’t take Hudson in the “who will the raiders overpay this year” office pool. I had assumed someone better would jump at the money.

  13. I like it Reggie, Now we got quite a few more to sign, no time for sleep kid!

PS (Welcome to the Nation Rodney, and thanks Wiz for your ever noticeable hard work every week. Much appreciated and best of luck)

    RAIDER NATION!!!!!!!!!

  14. Very good signing, like someone said earlier, stay the course.

Wiz was nothing at all like his uncle, I kept wishing he would be, oh well.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Actually, a GOOD Center IS worth that. As for Maclin – two ACL injuries, I believe, and not as important IF we’re targeting one of the top WRs in the draft. And Thomas? SOFT as a cottonball – NOT what we’re building in Oakland!

Hudson is a tremendous upgrade over Wiz. The homer in me wishes that Wiz was more like his Uncle and carried with him 1) A true love of being a Raider and what that means and, 2) the same talent & nastiness his namesake carries in Oakland. Unfortunately, he’s fallen short in all areas and wants to be paid for performance he hasn’t earned or is likely to earn. Looked promising early on but his PFF stats and scores have dropped drastically every year compared to others at the C position.

For those that could care less about PFF rankings, I’ll simply say to go with the eye-ball test – when’s the last time you saw Wiz mow down or pancake ANYONE on a D-line?

Hudson is a great addition for Tice to work with and is the kind of signing that should get all Raider fans excited.

    ONE NATION

  16. as a raider fan lets hope he shows up with the chiefs playbook for that kind of money. now sign iupati and draft some rbs or sign demarco murray to go with latavius .

  17. As a KC hahah. $9 mil per for a center. A center who isn’t a hall of fame center at that. He’s going to need that money to stand on to help his view from the bottom of the division.

  18. Cash in when u can! Now u can go ROT in Oakland. It kills me that there is NO loyalty in the NFL. Good God KC’s O-line just got worse if that was possible.

  19. This was the least we could do after letting Wiz go. To be honest, I w as always a bit disappointed with Wiz and his lack of blowing people off the ball. This is definitely an upgrade. Now go get a DT: Knighton or Odrick. We can get 2 receivers (White and Lockett) in the 1st and 3rd. No one has stopped Lockett yet and he helps the return game too. If we don’t get Hardy as DE, get one in the 2nd. Get a MLB (defensive QB) in free agency (someone with experience. RB in the 4th (Buck Allen).

  20. Kinda like you guys had to overpay to get Maclin? If we’re being real, KC is a dump. It’s like being in Russia, except people don’t you call you comrade.

Good job Reggie! Looking forward to another solid draft and a team on the rise.

  21. for all you jealous morons out there bashing the raiders , they have to overpay because the team is in limbo and has no permanent home. besides california has gigantic state income tax and it is hard to get fa’s to play in oakland . so the solution is to move to vegas .

  22. Great signing for a bargain price on the top FA lineman. There wasn’t a better option at C and that’s including Wiz. They Raiders have to spend money regardless, they haven’t even hit the cap floor yet (the minimum amount of combined cap space that must be spend over a 4 year period)

  23. This signing shows why the Raiders are Dumb Football people, and won’t be a playoff contender for sometime.

Reggie M. has overpaid for Rodney Hudson. center is Not the smartest place to pay big money.

I am sure he will join the “Raider Mentality” and Suck like the rest of them.

  24. This just kills the Maclin signing, only good lineman we had. Needed to build around him, not let him leave. Bash Alex all you want but no QB in the league can throw downfield with 2 seconds of protection…..

    You can always sign Wiz!

  26. Wow KC fans can’t handle the truth.. KC is garbage, and your QB can’t complete a pass to ANY wide receiver on the roster!! Now we took your center!!

  27. Nice signing by Oakland. People moan when they dont go for a high priced FA, they moan when they do !

As a Raider fan i love Wiz Jnr but if it wasnt for his surname most Raider fans wouldnt be that bothered to see him leave.

Wiz isnt that highly rated but loved by fans just due to his uncle and his surname. Shame it didnt work out tough

  28. I thought Reggie wasn’t going to sign anymore bad contracts over 9 million for Rodey Hudson is bad contract I love the raiders but please be honest with yourselves people Cobb only received 10 mill per year and Reggie pays a non all pro center over 9 mill ? Mark Davis said he was backing up the brinks truck well all the WR and Suh and Jerry H are already gone this sucks Raider nation deserves better. The CBA says we must spend that 70 million and giving huge contracts to undeserving free agents isn’t the way the Green Bay Packers built a great team did Reggie pay attention in GB . People can’t criticize Al Davis contracts when you pay a non all pro center like he us one of the top LT in the game . I was just hoping for some bigger signings after last years huge free agent failure you have to add some big time young talent when you have over 65 mill to spend two years in a row I bleed Silver and Black and if you are honest last year and so far this years free agency has been one big dissapointment for Raider Nation .Everybody said Oakland was going to sign several big time free agents after last years whiff well so far two years over 140 mill and we have signed tuck good player but on the wrong side of thirty and a one non all pro center . I think Raider Nation had bigger expectations. Suh Cobb Maclin Jerry Hugh’s Greg Hardt Julius Thomas mike Iupati Brandon m for a fifth rd pick was a No brainer so so frustrated today

  29. Won a playoff game in the last 20+ years, check!

    You can always sign Wiz!

    —————————

I’d rather spend half the money on someone like Wiz, and take that 9 per for an actual play maker.

Sane people don’t spend that much on a center.

Poe is happy with this signing though.

  30. Calm down raider fans. We have a boatload of money to spend and those guys who didn’t come didn’t want to be here! Spend on those who want to be Raiders not just the highest paid! Remember winning teams are not built on big names (seattle, new england) draft smart buy smart is what will work for us.We have barely spent yet.

  31. It’s a good signing let’s show some patience. Wiz had a lot of penalties and missed blocks if you watch games like I do!

  32. Exactly right real raider .Wiz is not a road grader this guy next to Gabe will make us strong up the middle. Would be nice to get Iupatai

  33. Good for the Raiders to actually be able to sign someone.

The problem is, he’s not much of an upgrade over the quality Center they already had.

If you have all this cap space, how about getting upgrades where you have massive deficiencies, not where it really won’t add much, because you were already strong there.

  34. “Wow KC fans can’t handle the truth.. KC is garbage, and your QB can’t complete a pass to ANY wide receiver on the roster!! Now we took your center!!”

KC Fans can’t handle the truth, huh??? You overpaid for a Good not Great Center. Your team has won how many games the last 2 years??? Not many. Proof shows your squad is Garbage, you Dirt Raider.

  35. People need to calm down just a little with the “8 million for a center” criticism.

Nothing exists in a vacuum. All factors need to be considered. A) The Raiders have obscene amounts of cap space available. They can afford to overpay. B) The current reality is that teams like the Raiders, who have been down for awhile, typically need to overpay talented players who have other options. C) The tax situation in California is a continuing problem. Players are becoming more aware of how much more they need to make in CA to equal the take home pay they would get in other markets.

If Del Rio can get things turned around, the Raiders could become a go-to destination and contracts like this will be less necessary. That is not the case now.

  36. Where does anyone think Hudson is a stud. Is he a good football player yes worth 9 million per year for a center a freaking center. Come on he doesn’t catch the ball he doesn’t even play the most important oline position. They clearly overpaid someone to make up for the fact they couldn’t convince other top tier fa to play in Oakland. It’s not ur team raider fans it’s ur extremely high taxes and poor facilities they want no part of.

  37. This is to gmamba I’m panicking because last year we had 68 mill and ended up with 0 young core players added to our roster we can’t afford to strike out again I don’t know about you but the last 12-14 years have been the worst in raider history I don’t enjoy being one of the worst teams for over a decade and people telling me to calm down when free agents like Suh Maclin Jerry H Brandon flowers Devon Mccourty Cobb Mark Ingram Orlando Franklin B Maxwell Pernell Mcphil Frank Gore are signing elsewhere when we have a brinks trunk of money to spend see Mark Davis quote. everybody knows we needed a number one WR even my five year old daughter well I guess a Reggie didn’t if Leonard Williams or Daunte Fowler are their at pick 4 then what we need a number 1 WR you can’t pass on Williams or Fowler for a WR with the number 4 pick in the draft in today’s NFL or what if M mariotia is their and we receive a great offer for the pick. We need a number one WR for D Carr signing one would have given us options and leverage at draft time .

  38. Flake he is 25 and only going to get better. I agree the raiders were garbage for years but Al was chasing a championship because he knew his time was short This is different now and it’s just the beginning. Can’t bash kc they are a well run organization and always have been but the Raiders are coming!

  39. This fits the model in Oaktown. They’re not close enough yet to sign the big name/big dollar FA’s. You build the team through the trenches – every smart football person will tell you that. Solid, smart move IMO. And if you think he overpaid for a center, think again. They’re responsible for the line calls and are basically the QB of the O-line. Perfect example is when Barett Robbins vanished for the SB. Not having him adjusting the line before the snap was devastating.

  40. Wiz is a better guard then he is a center….would not close door on him just yet….Iupati?

  41. Look at it this way. The Patriots paid 5 years, $47.5m to one of the top safeties in the league — a position with very little depth. The Raiders paid 5 years, $44.5m to a run-of-the-mill center — a position with a lot of depth.

  42. Like it or not, Hudson was the #3 center in the NFL last year, according to PFF, and #17 the year before. He is, by far the top FA center this year and his contract, per year, is right on par with what Mack got last year from Cleveland. Oakland isn’t paying any more than any other team would have paid for his services. We can debate all day whether or not he’s worth that much, but, don’t knock Oakland for what they paid, it was pretty much market value. The 2014 average salary for the top 5 centers was $7.92m, so I honestly don’t see where Oakland is overpaying for the top FA center this season. It just depends on your needs and obviously Oakland puts a high value on the center position.

  43. WOW! Raiders finally signed somebody?

Remember a couple of weeks ago when Raider Nation all but guaranteed the signings of Suh, Cobb and Thomas? And I stated you wont get any of them. This board crucified me. Well how did my prediction turn out? BTW, Thomas and Jags are working out terms to a contract.

Y’all better hurry now and sign up some more over paid athletes. No carry over on the cap, it must be used now. Something tells me the Raiders will get stuck with the leftovers that no one else wants. Good luck with that!

  44. They got the best center in free agency and they hurt KC in the process, win/win so stop complaining. Lots of teams wanted the top rated free agents, they can’t all come to the Raiders. We aren’t the only team that wanted/needed Suh, Thomas, Cobb, etc.

  45. Baby Gaga Cobb wanted to stay in Green Bay and suh signed where there is no state tax. Reggie signed the guy we need most hate all you want but the guy knows what he is doing Thomas is not gronk and shouldn’t be paid like him.

  46. Take the money and run, Rodney. The Raiders will continue to blow chunks, but at least you’ll be well paid while playing for a pathetic team.

  47. Last year the Chiefs lost Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz to FA. Tell me, which of those guys lived up to their expensive new contracts?
Hudson is good and will be good but he won’t be the 9 million dollar man.
Have to think you could have brought Wisniewski back for less money.

    ——————-
Maclin is worth 11? Smith is worth 15.6? I’d rather pay 9 for Hudson than 6 for Fisher.

  49. Maybe its a bit expensive, but whatever. Thats a big upgrade at a position of need with a young player. Wiz just wasnt getting the job done IMHO.

I really believe in the concept that the QB maybe the driver of the offense, but offensive line is the engine. With Hudson and with the move of Howard to RT, all they need is a RG and I think you have a very solid group.

    =======

I doubt that the chefs will have any money to ‘even’ afford Wiz when their cap is clogged by Houston. Of course retaining Houston won’t improve the chefs as they were still a non-playoff team even with his 22 sacks last season.

Albert played very well until he wrecked his knee. Asomoah was decent. Schwartz was hurt and didn’t play much. Hudson isn’t worth 9M, but when you look at the stupid money that gets spent on opening day every year, it’s not outrageous. Wisniewski would have cost less, but he’s not worth locking up. If Hudson leaves, Alex Smith will miss him.

  52. Hey Reg, typically big money goes to big needs. Raiders already had a decent center. What gives? You really need some time in GMSchool101! Just sayin.

  53. Haha typical Raiders overpaying for a Center $9,000,000 for a player who’s only played a couple of years , but I also heard the Raiders just offered Adam Sandler $2,000,000 a year to be team Water boy they know he can bring that high quality H20.

  54. “Albert played very well until he wrecked his knee.” Yes he always plays well unless he is hurt and he is hurt every year.
“Asomoah was decent.” Just “decent” proves that he was overpaid.
“Schwartz was hurt and didn’t play much.” And was overpaid.
“Hudson isn’t worth 9M, but when you look at the stupid money that gets spent on opening day every year, it’s not outrageous.” True, not outrageous but more than he is worth.
“Wisniewski would have cost less, but he’s not worth locking up.” So don’t lock him long-term, extend his contract with a little more money for a couple of years and draft a Center.
“If Hudson leaves, Alex Smith will miss him.” Not if they replace his production. Since he is good but not great that should not be hard.
