Mike Iupati cashes in with $40 million deal from Cardinals

The Cardinals have a quarterback who needs all the protection he can get.

So it’s worth spending the money to protect him.

The Cards finalized the anticipated signing of 49ers guard Mike Iupati Tuesday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $40 million over five years, with $22.5 million guaranteed.

That’s a bigger deal than last year’s free agent coup, left tackle Jared Veldheer (who got a five-year, $35 million deal, with just $10.5 million guaranteed).

That’s welcome news for quarterback Carson Palmer, who is coming off a torn ACL, and now has a solid left side of the line to protect him.

Problem is… although Iupati is a road grader in the run
game.. he is average at best in pass protection.

  2. Love it…

Cardinals Guards were beyond awful last year and they plug in Iupati…

Two great day one signings the past two years

  3. He’s not that much of a pass protector. Awesome run blocker. Doesn’t fit based on the reasoning in this article. SMH

  4. We get it!! He’s not a great passing blocker. Jesus people, read the previous comments. Saying the same thing as the 10 people above you is pointless.

  5. This was about the run game. AZ had the worse the last 2 years. Once AP (hopefully) is on board this will make more sense. Unlike Kaep Palmer does not hold the ball all day.

  6. How do you grade any O-linemen from SF on pass blocking with a QB who can’t read defenses and first instinct is to tuck and run?

  7. They need a guy to protect the passer so they shoveled huge bucks at a guy who can’t protect the passer. He’s strictly a run blocker.

  8. Great player, he just couldn’t stay on the field the last few seasons.
    He will be missed.

  9. This is crazy! Everyone criticizing the Dolphins for paying Suh. This guy is a freaking Guard and look at this Contract. He is not even at the top of his position but is the best Guard available this year. I guess we need to wrap out heads around the fact that Contracts in the real world vs NFL Contracts mean nothing. It is about the Guaranteed money (from the owner) and the what he counts against the Cap annually. Besides, they will be cut long before the end of terms. Just ask Jake Long, Reggie Bush, Brian Hartline, etc.

  10. He wasn’t very good last year. This move will be regretted in two years and he will be cut to save cap space. Good run blocker but bad pass protection. The cards don’t even have a good RB to take advantage of his skills…

  11. Iupati will help out the Cardinals a lot. Veldheer and Massie are outstanding in pass protection on the outside. What the Cardinals needed was a good interior lineman to open up holes for the running game, and Iupati is perfect at that. Now, let’s cut Lyle Sendlein, move Larsen to center, which will free up mone for Cromartie or Adrian Peterson in a trade.

  12. Wow, that blurb was unintentially funny.

If the Cardinals paid Iupati 40 million to protect a QB they are going to be very sorry.

He’s a great run blocker. Been ranked one of the worst pass blocking guards in the league two straight years.

  13. Why do so many people hate on the 49ers and their fans? It’s ok, i get it that you wish you had a franchise as successful as the 49ers…cowboys and steelers excluded. but to just follow every move that the niners make is a bit sad, unless your a niner fan. the truth is that out only real question mark is our couching staff because we still dont know much about. Gore was a great leader and im grateful for his service but he is up there in age…he wasnt the same of old…Lupati was a great run blocker but couldnt say the same for his pass blocking so he is not worth the money. It hurts to lose Willis but our rookie Borland stepped up so we still have to solid MLBs with Bowman being the other. Our young pass rushers stepped up. Crabtree, well he is not what we thought… solid route runner but so is Boldin and Stevie…If we sign Torrey Smith then we are better off… and if justin smith also decides to retire we did sign Dockett which is a good replacement…if he does retire, the money we save from willis and smith, we may be able to sign other good players to contribute…the fact is we hace too many niner haters that like to point out headlines but the only question still is our coaching staff.

  14. Niner fans love Iupati, until he leaves. Now he is this one dimensional over paid guard lol. Sore whiners I guess. As stated prior, he is actually decent at pass blocking with a traditional QB, not someone who scrambles for a living.

But dont worry Niner fans, you got Darnell Dockett!

Dude Dockett is DONE !!!! Their is a reason why Arizona all of the sudden cut him after 10+ years. In 2012 via pro football focus Dockett ranked out as the worst DE in the NFL at -25.9 pass rushing and -29.7 run blocking and ranked 31st out of 45 in 2013 , negative in both pass rushing and run blocking again. He is a horrible run blocker and has lost his ability to rush the passer. Those two stat years were before he suffered a major knee injury !!! Troll that!!!

Iupati is a excellent LG. 3time pro Bowler and All Pro. His pass protection fared way better when protecting a pocket QB in Smith. Kaepernick holds the ball to long , cant read defenses and is run first QB , so its hard to blame Iupati for last year.

With an elite LT in Veldheer, Elite LG In Veldheer, you slide Cooper to RG , with an above AVG RT in Massie who will only get better like Cooper , and you have the makings of an elite OL that will actually open holes for Andre Ellington instead of getting him murdered. I love this signing.

Of course you do realize PFT has to moderate each comment prior to posting… right?

Lots of times I post on an article with ZERO comments.
Mine usually ends up being 7th-12th somewhere.

  17. I want to think Baalke has a plan that is something more than NUKE THE TEAM.

    What are you doing!!!

  18. Cards NFC CHAMPS 2015 13 3 On the back of the running game, and the fact that once john Brown gets behind your Free Safety after Carson Pulls the ball out of the gut of the running back at the very last second and tosses a strike to John Brown who just ran by your whole defense, SCORE !!!!!!!! Stop that Seahawks, Packers, or Boyz. Cards are here and there gonna dominant..

  19. Are they aware he’s an awful pass blocker but monster run blocker? Might want to Taylor fit your article to that strength. Couldn’t keep Kaepernick upright who can move, yeah Palmers secure

  20. “The Cardinals have a quarterback who needs all the protection he can get.”

Can you name a team with a quarterback who doesn’t need all the protection he can get?

  21. I love how Cardinal fans are bashing another QB. FYI, your QB is a not so talented version of Derrick Rose, he stands and gets injured. They aren’t going anywhere until they get someone who is a top 20 QB
