The Cardinals have a quarterback who needs all the protection he can get.

So it’s worth spending the money to protect him.

The Cards finalized the anticipated signing of 49ers guard Mike Iupati Tuesday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $40 million over five years, with $22.5 million guaranteed.

That’s a bigger deal than last year’s free agent coup, left tackle Jared Veldheer (who got a five-year, $35 million deal, with just $10.5 million guaranteed).

That’s welcome news for quarterback Carson Palmer, who is coming off a torn ACL, and now has a solid left side of the line to protect him.
