Raiders agreed to deal with Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith

AP

Once upon a time, the Raiders made a huge free agent mistake by signing a Super Bowl MVP.

They can only hope that Malcolm Smith isn’t the next Larry Brown.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Raiders have agreed to a deal with the former Seahawks linebacker.

They desperately needed someone to take their money, and Smith was nearly extraneous in Seattle, where he only started five games last year.

He’s still a quality player, though he had to wait a year to parlay on his Super Bowl success, unlike the former Cowboys cornerback who stands as one of the Raiders’ biggest personnel mistakes.

This oughta be fun. Malcolm Smith gives away height and weight to some RBs in the league.

Jason Verrett gives away height and weight to almost every receiver in the league. Doesn’t mean he can’t play.

I have to assume he’s getting 10 mil per.

    LOL

That would only be 1M more than KC will be paying in dead money once Bowe gets cut.

  3. Like Jersey said – He’s following his old LB coach to Oaktown. Norton must trust him, and he must fit the mold of what they’re trying to create. Can’t find any negatives to this at this point in time.

  6. I’m not overly excited by this particular signing but if Smith’s contract isn’t over-the-top with a lot of guaranteed $$$ then the comparisons with Larry Brown end there and it may turn out to be positive. And I have to say that while I’m not bowled over, I do feel better about the signings so far in that they’re relatively young players unlike the over-the-hill gang that McKenzie brought on board last year.

  7. Shut up! Is this for real? Then Jimmy Graham too the Seahawks? Dude Malcom Smith is awesome. You negative freaks can Co back to carney land.

  8. Is it just me, or is almost every article about the Raiders on this site full of sarcasm?

  9. We in Seattle wish Smith the Best.. He is a stand up guy and a hard worker…. He just cant help stop the run his strengths are in pass protection. Thats why the Hawks didnt use him a whole lot last season.

Good pick up for the Raiders, and hey at least they are moving in the right direction after a zillion years of doing nothing…

Who knows maybe we might take on the silver in black in a superbowl in the next season or two.

  10. I think this will work out well for both parties. Mal is a little undersized, but he has great instincts, and brings the Seahawks worth ethic with him.

Best of luck to him and the Raiders. I can say that now since we’re not in the same division anymore.

    Go Hawks.

    Roasted. 🙂

  12. We needed a linebacker and we got one. No MLB in the draft worth taking at 4 if we don’t trade down, get a good place holder and wait for a ” once in a generation ” MLB in the coming drafts. We have two studs at outside LB , our lb core is legit. Now if we could somehow grab a DE !! My biggest concerns for my raiders are DE, DT, and WR. Let’s keep making good moves reg!!

  13. Smith is a freak athlete who can make plays in pass coverage from the LB position. I thought he should have been traded after he won the Super Bowl MVP because his stock was high and in post season he played higher than anything he showed in regular season.

Watching him in run coverage even with a beastly d-line he would get out of position and overpowered. There is one play I watched him run in the opposite direction of the RB. He’s still young and has talent but still such a work in progress.

  14. Good move for Seattle, as Malcolm never did anything aside from intercept a SB pass…he never improved all year. Now, get rid of KJ Wright too, as he’s no LB worth keeping either…remember KJ in the SB nearly 8 yards BEHIND Gronk? End of story!

  15. Before you Raider fans go and get excited, please go watch game tape of any game he played in last year. Great work ethic and a seemingly good guy, but he was beyond bad last year. ALWAYS out of position in the run game, huge liability on the field. Played the game of his life in the SB against the Bronco’s. Don’t expect that from him week in week out. Nothing against the guy, but he’ll only see the field because of injury to the starters. Similar to his role in Seattle.

And yes, Skawh, now if we can only find a replacement for KJ Wright! If he just plays a mediocre game in the SB, that’s a completely different game. I cursed his name more than any other last year.

  16. Whoa I am not one to argue with fellow fans because we’re 12’s but KJ Wright was versing the best TE in football one on one. He got beat by a double move in the Super Bowl sure. The tape I see it looks like Kam Chancellor should have been there to help and their body language on the TD all but confirmed it. KJ Wright is a monster in the run game, has a high football IQ and ridiculous wingspan that allows him to hang with majority of TE’s and RB in football.

Bobby Wagner got tore up but Pats HBs in Super Bowl due to scheming into his zone area. We all still love him and Simon flat out got owned by Edleman after Lane went down. People that call for KJ Wright gone better remember Aaron Curry, Leroy Hill and Will Herring.

  17. That’s a great signing for Oakland! MS is a quality player. Imo, he could and should have been a starter in Seattle:.. -and you have Kenny Norton jr… I like carr… Oakland just might kick some but this year!!!
