Report: Colts working on Andre Johnson, Frank Gore

Getty Images

The Colts just opened the door for their own veteran wide receiver.

And now they may be close to walking another one in, with some company.

According to Houston radio host Lance Zierlein of SportsTalk 790, both Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and 49ers running back Frank Gore could be heading to Indianapolis.

The Eagles were in on both players, and thought they had a deal with Gore before he apparently got cold feet.

Replacing the 36-year-old Reggie Wayne with the 33-year-old Johnson would be an upgrade, and Gore’s more productive than any back they’ve tried there in a few years.

Putting two such accomplished players around quarterback Andrew Luck would be a huge boost, and keep the strength of the team strong, if the Colts are able to close the deal.

  1. I’m just glad to see Philly knows they need to address the receiver position…if they made an offer to Andre, they surely will make an attempt to bring someone else in.

That’s a crusher to Texans fans. Best player in franchise history jumping ship to a division rival.

  2. Finally the Colts get something out of all of that cap room. Great move to bring a couple of vets in at RB and WR. Gives them a year or two to draft someone to take over at those spots. Now to sign Orakpo and Searcy.

  3. Smart moves would provide immediate upgrade and impact, need to work on the defense though thats their problem.

  4. Really shouldn’t be a hard sell for the Colts. I would love to see Johnson be an Eagle but the honest line is the Colts are a lot closer to the Super Bowl than Philly so if these guys want rings at this stage in their careers, it should be a no-brainer.

  5. I don’t think players are weary of Chip, I think players such as these are trying to go to a win now team. Eagles aren’t quite there. -Eagles fan

  6. As much as I despise the Colts, this makes the most sense. They have the money, they have the QB and the receiver need, and Pagano recruited Johnson to Miami so they have ties.

  7. Great move by the Colts if they land Andre Johnson. That will take the pressure off of Hilton and allow him to have more one on one opportunities.

This is the type of help that Luck needs.

Now, they go into the draft and load up on O-linemen and D-linemen and their looking improved from last season.

  8. its not the fact that the colts had #1 offense in league last year in many categories plus having one of, if not the best, in the game..its chip kelly….and oh yeah, he is a racist too

  9. Chip wants younger players and Andre Johnson and Frank Gore do not fit the mold. I say go for Kaepernick, draft a young rb and sign Torrey Smith. Concentrate on defense. Byron Maxwell could be a mistake he is great in that scheme with the players around him. He needs to prove it on his own.

  10. Need to upgrade on the D line, and get a proven pass rusher. But I would like both of these veterans in blue next season. Draft a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round. Boom Herron was averaging over 4 yards a carry behind the O line, Richardson made them look bad.

  11. As a Texans fan I’m all for them eating up their cap on older players like Johnson and Gore right before they are going to have to commit $25 million per to Andrew Luck.

  12. Johnson and Gore would be a big upgrade for the Colts and raise their chances of winning NOW…though neither is of course much of a viable long-term investment, especially Frank Gore.
Still, if they acquire both those guys, and continue to build their defense through the rest of FA and the draft, The Colts would be formidable indeed…

  13. So the tweet says “Dre on owners private jet to Indy”. Isn’t that a visit being lined up prior to 4pm? Isn’t that a blatant disregard for the legal tampering period rules?

Don’t get me wrong. I think the legal tampering period is stupid but it is one thing to announce you’re going to sign a contract but another to actually travel there. No?

  14. frank gore is done…49ers have a good line and he couldn’t run. colts line is poor…i dont see him being that effective.
andre has some juice left though

  15. Eagle fan: We never really wanted those players anyway because they were too old. We have some scrubs, I mean, good young players on the team that can step right in for Maclin and McCoy. Where’s that green Kool-Aid Chip’s passing out?

  16. Gotta wonder how much Johnson still has left in the tank, with Houston letting him get away so easily.

  17. Eagles – Percy Harvin? Or do you try to save dough w/ dabbling in RFA market – Andre Holmes from Oak…a 6′ 4″ young ascending player…no draft pick compensation – but Oak can match offer.

Colts continue to look to F.A. and trades as the answer.

Good teams built through the draft and have consistent success.
    ===================================

While I normally would agree with you, as a Pats fan I have seen them need to go to market for trades/FA signings often – specifically at skill positions like WR or CB.

So the argument could be made that a team can be successful drafting in some spots (Pats seem to do well with O-Line and D-Line for instanceS), but completely whiff on others and still be in the mix every year via free agency and filling in those holes.

I don’t believe that applies in this case since Johnson was cut. I think that only applies to guys whose contracts are up at 4pm today – the beginning of the new league year.

  20. Those guys are both old; where they recruited by Chuck Pagano and did they play together at Miami? Was Reggie Wayne also on that team?

  21. Smart moves. The Colts are young on offense. These are the perfect vets to infuse into their offense. Their offense is set. Now they can possibly add Fairly and draft all defense.

  22. Reciever to replace wayne? check
Good running back(dont need a great one)? check

Why are people complaining? the deals aren’t going to be very high in $ per year and we needed to address both of those positions

  23. 2013 NFL Sack Leader Robert Mathis back, Trent Cole, Hall of Famer Andre Johnson, Possible Hall of Famer Frank Gore, Young Prodigy Duron Carter……and we still have money to sign someone like Ngata

Colts looking like a real dynasty in the making…defense already is improved greatly without even hitting the draft yet

  24. It seems like Johnson wants to win a playoff seed in his old team’s division, not win a super bowl.

  25. Reggie Wayne was a senior when Johnson was a freshman at Miami. I got news for all those wondering about the upgrade to the D….the signing period hasn’t even started yet!! The Colts are in on plenty on the defensive side of the ball, and they have the 5th most cap room in the league.

  26. So far this offseason they have signed a 30+ RB (Frank Gore), a 30+ WR (Andre Johnson) and a 30+ DE (Trent Cole). I hope they draft well.

  27. Both good signings for Indy, assuming they get them cheap. Grigson should be fired, but these would be good deals to make on his way out the door.

  28. Stop speculating! Justin Smith his retiring. Today he says “I never said that”. The defense line coach just became the head coach, why wouldn’t he come back. Frank Gore to the Eagles??? He’s still meeting with the Colts and now the 49ers have more money to spend via A Smith and P Willis. Niners aren’t out on Gore yet – he said he wanted to retire a 49er.

  29. Gore knows the market for his position, but I don’t think Andre Johnson does. Look for him to walk away when the Colts won’t pony up the delusional contract he thinks he deserves on the verge of his 34th birthday.

  30. Last I checked… their defense sucks… and they had no problem scoring pts… when they weren’t turning the ball over… this makes no sense to me.

  31. “Putting two such accomplished players around quarterback Andrew Luck would be a huge boost, and keep the strength of the team strong,”

And as we all know, strong strength is the best kind, far superior to weak strength!

  32. Colts were one of the youngest teams in the NFL last season, so i guess it makes since to bring a few veterens into the mix. And only 7 mill garunteed for Gore, not a bad get for cheap.

  33. It feels like they score almost 28 points a game the offense isn’t the problem… they need the D!!!

  34. Sorry, but Andre is coasting on rep. He will be solid but nothing special. Hope he’s getting paid accordingly. Would like to have seen them get Ingram and try to work on bolstering the D to help not just with points against but with field position. They were 23rd in that category last year.

If they get the defense fixed, they would be a dangerous team.
    ——————————————————————————–
You say that but they only put up 7 against the patriots D. So are they really dangerous? Also it’s not that easy to just “fix” a defense. And even if they somehow did (which I doubt they can do in one off season) they still need to put up more than one touchdown to be considered dangerous. They made it to the AFC championship game so they came one game away from being in the super bowl. So as far as the AFC is concerned, sure, they’re dangerous. But they’ll never make the super bowl if they don’t fix the defense AND the offense. And that is much easier said than done. Don’t hold your breath colts fans.

  36. I gotta tell you the Eagles and Chip Kelly might want to look at legal options.

If Steven A Smith is going to accuse people of being racists and that leads to free agents getting scared and signing other places you know they do have grounds to sue.

I know nothing about Chip or his background but anyone who knows anything about Jeffrey Lurie knows he is not someone who would put up with that or hire someone like that.

  37. For those sniping about Gore’s age, I think he rushed for over 1,100 yds each of the last 4 seasons. Plenty more production than almost anyone that’s been in the RB spot in the last 5 years for Indy. Injury-prone…he’s not (missed one game in the last 4 seasons).

Andre, it just depends. He didn’t look great last year in the Texans games I saw, but that doesn’t mean he is completely devoid of something remaining in the tank.

Bottom line is, the Colts have to get these guys for the right price, if they indeed get them.

  38. Who can blame anyone not wanting any part of CK’s high octane practice sessions less than 24 hours before a game!

No way I’m going to Philadelphia to be part of an experiment that bound to fail! CK needs to get a grip and stop over working his players!

  39. Patriots run game has just run out of NE…Blount going to Arizona and Vareen to the NY Football Giants

  40. I think Andre wants to play in the AFC South to spite O’Brien. O’Brien telling Johnson that he won’t get the opportunity to start and will only have the opportunity to get about half of the touches from last year is disrespectful now Johnson is going to make him pay!

  41. clownofdust…

New league year means that NE is no longer champions.
    _______________________________________

Correct. They are no longer the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots.

The proper term is now “The Four Time Super Bowl Champions AND Current Defending Champion…New England Patriots.”

Thank you for pointing that out.

OK they only put up like 7 on new England’s d which isn’t that good but they gave up like 44! That sound terrible… you should never give up 40+ in a playoff game

  43. Compared to previous years Andre was a ball dropping machine last season. That’s not the QB’s fault. Luck had the same problems with his receivers. Colts need to pass on AJ and work on the OL.
