DeAngelo Williams to visit the Steelers Friday

AP

The Steelers already have a lead back, but they could still use some insurance.

They may have it lined up already, as former Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams is visiting the Steelers Friday, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Steelers were caught short after LeGarrette Blount walked out on them last year, and then Le’Veon Bell suffered a Week 17 knee injury which kept him out of the playoffs.

Bell is also expected to be suspended for a pair of games this year because of an ill-timed marijuana/DUI plea, so the Steelers will need someone to stand in.

The soon-to-be 32-year-old Williams doesn’t have the legs to be an every down back any longer, but could offer some solid reps for someone after injuries, age and money brought his Panthers career to an end yesterday.

  1. Steelers only need him for 3-5 carries a game and with a minimum salary this is an ideal fit.

Experience is a premium for pittsburgh at this point after what happened when Bell went down

  2. Not a fan of this. I liked him when he was much younger, but he’s always injured and now 32. He won’t be anything more than a backup, but still…

  3. capped out and finished. basement dwellers for the foreseeable future. must suck to be a steelers fan when you are getting excited about overpaying an oft-injured 32 year old running back.

  4. LeGarrette Blount didn’t walk out on them last year. The Steelers brass got emotional and cut him. Dumb move! You could have fined him or benched him. Instead they cut him and he goes on to win a Super Bowl. He was wrong for walking off the field early but they could have really used him when Bell got hurt.

  5. Panthers fan here – Steelers fans, this is a good fit. He shouldn’t be starting now, but he’d be a great change of pace as a backup getting 5-7 carries a game, and he’s a sneaky weapon in the screen game. Because he split carries for so long with Stewart, his legs aren’t quite as old as most 32 year old’s. Also, he’s a great locker room presence and mentor, which is what you want out of a veteran running back. It was time to part ways, but he’ll be missed in Charlotte.

    Thanks for the years, DWill.

  6. Too late. Playoffs are over, Stillers didn’t have a back up running back, and lost because of it. They also need an offensive line and defense.

  7. by all means, keep reliving your wonderful division title last year. it worked wonders for you when you got stomped in the playoffs by your rivals. im just surprised one of you hasn’t brought up the fact that you won 4 super bowls in the 70’s yet.

Leaving the field DURING a game is walking out on your team. Cutting him was the absolute right thing to do.

  9. The act of walking off the field is “walking out” in my books.

The Steelers will need a competent RB for a couple games and a good back-up for the remainder of the year. This guy would fit the bill for cheap. Would be a decent signing if they can make the numbers work.

  10. mr9teen so walking out on ur team and u expect us to keep him lol all u pats fans who think he is a good RB and a good person are a joke

  11. Steelers’ quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner was DeAngelo Williams’ offensive coordinator at the University of Memphis.

  12. This would be a good fit for both sides. Williams’ injury last year was to his hand, rather than his legs, and when he came back he was helpful in our playoff run. He would be a change of pace from the power running of Bell, and he does catch the ball well. He could do well as the clear #2 with a good team. Selfishly, this would be good for the Panthers because by the time we go to Pittsburgh in 2018 Williams will be retired and not around to torch us for 200 yards and 3 TDs. So yes, Pittsburgh, do sign him.

The Steelers will continue to win titles. This offense was a clicking during last five games of the season. We all know we didnt have our most versatile offensive weapon against the Ravens. We should have known we couldnt bring a rb in three days before a game and expect him to know the playbook. Smart planning is needed. This year we will be prepared with this signing. If we can shore up the defense, this team will be dangerous deep into the playoffs. Last season is the beginning of a run of afcn titles.
