Patriots inquire about C.J. Spiller

The Patriots have lost running back Shane Vereen to the Giants.  To replace him, they possibly will further advance the cross-pollination of the AFC East.

Per multiple reports, the Patriots have inquired about former Bills running back C.J. Spiller.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald says that the interest is not considered to be serious at this time.  And that likely has something to do with Spiller’s desire for a bigger role — and the bigger payday that would go along with it.

That’s the lingering dilemma with Spiller.  His role will dictate the size of his contract.  If the Patriots envision him as a complement to LeGarrette Blount, Spiller’s compensation will reflect that.

Spiller continues to be patient while waiting for DeMarco Murray to sign a contract.  If Murray leaves Dallas, Spiller could be an option there.

He also has been tied to the Jets, given the presence of former Bills coach Chan Gailey.  But Gailey didn’t use Spiller as a workhorse, either.

  1. He is better off with the Jets………the Patriots won’t pay him squat, use him up and dump him like they do every other player. It’s not about talent there, it’s a body in a uniform with the man behind the curtain pulling the magic chain Ernie Oz Adams.

  2. Since the Super Bowl the Patriots have parted company with : Revis, Wilfork, Vereen, Casillas, Ayers, Ridley, and Browner.

The Patriots are clearly winning the offseason.
    .

  3. Spiller is a great #2 back and is a huge threat for kick/punt returns. He is also a class act and a good teammate.

My only knock on him is that he runs toward the sideline as though it was the goal line.

  4. The Patriots don’t like to pay running backs. That’s why Vereen is gone. They probably valued Vereen at $3 and he got over $4 from NYG. Spiller is not much of an upgrade on Vereen and would be serving the same role. Don’t see any press conferences at One Patriot Place for Spiller.

  5. Spiller has never really lived up to his billing as a 9th overall pick. Fred Jackson has outplayed him most of his time in Buffalo. Don’t see him as much more than a JAG at RB.

  6. “My only knock on him is that he runs toward the sideline as though it was the goal line.”

    that was hilarious ….

maybe he should join the Panthers with Ted Ginn …

  7. I hope Spiller is smart enough to sign with either Dallas or the Patriots. He will get a chance to play in a championship game and maybe even a super bowl. The other advantage, it would be the first time in his career he will have an offensive line to run behind. He never had any blocking in Buffalo. The Bills always had the worst offensive lines in the NFL. CJ should get 1500 yds behind a competent offensive line.
A quote from OBD, (“we don’t pay guards they are not important. The only offensive line position that is important is left tackle.)” Then they wonder why they set the record (15 years) without a playoff appearance.

  8. Pat’s fans…feel blessed that you had Revis’ services for 1 year.

Kraft was too cheap to step up to the plate for the below facts ARE:

Darrelle Revis has earned, and is scheduled to earn, $76 million between 2013 and 2017.

Tom Brady has earned, and is scheduled to earn, $73.6 million between 2013 and 2017.

So, being a “GOAT” in NE isn’t all it’s cracked up to be….obviously.

    Kraft is CHEAP!

  10. Kraft isn’t cheap. He’s paid multiple players at the top of the market. Just because he doesn’t spend the money on the players YOU think he should, doesn’t make him cheap. You people are probably one that think Wilfork is worth 9 million a year, and even in the bizarro world where you could prove as fact that Kraft is cheap, I’ll take the last 15 years over of proven success over Kraft throwing money at people just because he can.

  11. There’s a hard cap in the NFL and the Patriots pay up to the hard cap every year like most teams. They’re not any cheaper or more spendthrift than anybody else. They do manage the cap better than anybody else by not burying themselves in bad contracts, they coach up players they get on the cheap better than anybody else, and they have a HOF QB who doesn’t try to squeeze out every last dollar from his team.
