Pats add CB Chimdi Chekwa

Darrelle Revis is gone, and Brandon Browner may be close behind him.  So the Patriots need cornerbacks.

They’ve added one via free agency.  Per a league source, former Raiders cornerback Chimdi Chekwa has signed a one-year contract with New England.

A fourth-round pick in 2011 from Ohio State, Chekwa appeared in 10 games with two starts in 2014.  The prior year, he appeared in all 16 games, starting one.

Potentially a restricted free agent because he didn’t have four years of service, the Raiders didn’t tender Chekwa, allowing him to sign with any other team.

  1. Just shows how high we are on last years 7th rd pick TJ Carrie….. Wish you the best Chimdi

    Go Raiders!

  2. Bill b loves old Al Davis draft picks he always picks them up for a year or two . I wish Al would have signed bill fir a HC he was in for a interview but I’m sure wanted to much control for bills liking I’m sure they picked each other’s brains ? I know the respected each other.

  3. Hoping my fins get browner…….but I know better than to expect it from our team, they are so taken by suh now, bet they get a few scrubs but nobody that will compliment our rb or wr positions. Arg.

  4. Chekwa is straight garbage. What is it with the Pats always signing Raider scrubs? Going back to Doug Gabriel, not an offseason has gone by without the Patriots signing a Raider washout…

  5. …from Revis to Chimdi. They ought to hand the Lombardi Trophy for next season to the Patriots right now. lol!

  6. Got to give pats credit every time though, they have their act together and sign exactly who they want and get their guys. My fins think their players from losing teams know how to win, while pats get guys who actually do win. Everywhere they go. Especially in between the hashes, I’m only a Brady hater when we play them. Love the fire he has to win. Lack of it in Miami, suh may learn but we still can hope this team, even the coach, gets their head out their arse, study more belicheck because Brady and hoodie are definitely special breed.

Chimdi Chekwa means “Darelle Revis” in Swahili.

I thought Chimdi was born in Florida or Louisiana, but I think his name translates to “Lost in Space”, or something similar.

Al Davis didn’t hire Bill Belichick because he wanted an offensive coach. Mr Davis was the defacto defensive coach on that team. He was one of the few owners that really (and I mean really) understands the game.

Bill Belichick walked away saying great things about Mr Davis’ knowledge of the game. It was the biggest reason why his teams had great defenses.

  9. Bottom Line is this. Brady and Gronkowski stay healthy all year. And the Patriots with a skunk work defense still goes at least 11-5 and make the playoffs. Where anything can happen for a QB as great as TB. Brady goes down with injury early in the year. It doesn’t matter what Hoodie does with Garapollo or someone else. Patriots are 6-10 or worse. If Gronk goes down, it’s 9-7 or 10-6 and maybe wild card. That’s the impact of the decision to let Revis and Browner go. And hitch your wagon to the likes Chimdi Chekwa.

  10. All Pats fans wanted revis to stay. And the team offered 35 mil guaranteed. But at some price, you can’t allocate that much money to a 30 year-old CB who got torched by Steve Smith in the playoffs.

NE isn’t nearly done adding pieces, and they now have plenty of money to spend.

  11. At least we’ll have fun with the name. Belichick has a plan and it will most likely be a surprise to everyone once it completely unfolds. I’d like to see a move up in the draft this year. Dominique Easley was basically on a redshirt first year, they won with virtually no production from him, which makes him like a new pick in 2015. They will have a 3rd round compensatory pick this year for Talib and another one next year for Revis. They will possibly have another one or two compensatory picks next year if Wilfork and Browner don’t come back. They should package some tradeable picks (comp. picks can’t be traded) and move well up in the 1st round in 2015, targeting a stud corner. Enough of the Darius Butler and Ras-I Dowling experiments, time to look for a blue-chipper. They can then shore up the O-line with mid-late rounders, where they have had success.

  12. Nnamdi Asomugha…the guy was as highly sought after as a CB could be when he left the Raiders. Two years later at the age of 30 the Eagles cut him. Not even sure if he made the 49ers in 2013. Maybe Revis is that rare elite CB that plays well into his mid 30s but Asomugha has already been forgotten. Viva la Belichekwa.

  13. Yes, I wish that Revis was still a Patriot, but if you think that the Jets were going to stop where they were if the Patriots upped their offer. No, the Jets are so far under the cap that there was no way the Patriots were going to out bid the Jests. Those are the facts… The whining about Kraft being cheap is crap. The fact is Revis was headed to the Jets not out of loyalty to the team that drafted him or love of NYC, it was because they were always going to pay him the most.

Patriots should have pressed harder earlier in the process (and maybe they did, since there were was no info coming out of Foxborough) if there was any hope of signing him. He is what he is, a mercenary…top dollar man.

I hope the Patriots sign or trade for another corner or two, maybe Keenan Lewis.

Steve Smith is the obvious winner. Revis will settle for his ring and his 39 million, and concede the torch to Mr. Smith.

  15. Let the Chekwa era begin! He’ll be on the cover of Sports Illustrated by November!

  16. The cold isn’t so bad when you win. You should come up here once in a while and see my smile. Ear to ear, baby!

  17. He’s not as bad as some of you people think, probably because you’ve never seen him play.

He’s a trooper, try’s really hard and is fine in man coverage.

All the best to you, Chimdi.

  18. Does swiss cheese go well with chimichangas?

Cuz that is what our secondary is now.

Oh well – I need to turn the corner (no pun intended) on us losing Revis – it is March after all and the Pats have never been champions of the offseason – just the regular season.

  19. The Pats are trying to corner the market on Special Teamers !!

“Mortimer, turn those darn machines off !”

  20. Many are forgetting how Belichick does this. He’ll pick up several pieces from teams on the cheap after the last cut before the season starts. A lot of great players make it through the waiver wires who don’t pan out with new teams. Think Blount who they picked back up later in the season last year. It could be a bumper crop of tested veterans who hit that market this year. Who fit right into the Patriots scheme. Like Aqib Talib and others. Who the Patriots won’t have to pony up the big salaries for. Plus I think a lot of us are undervaluing just how good Malcom Butler really was in the playoffs last season. Especially in the SB. I think his youth, performance and huge potential upside was a big contributing factor in their decision let Revis and Browner walk. Browner was the guy I hated to see them let go. I thought for sure they were going to move him to strong safety this year beside McCourty. And go with younger corners.

  21. Chimdi Chekwa means “Darelle Revis” in Swahili.

No, it means “pickled cabbage” in Korean.

  22. Apparently he’s really good at depressurizing footballs and can work a spycam like a champ. I’m not sure why the Pats wanted him, but there must. be. some. reason…..
