Chip Kelly: I thought DeMarco Murray would be out of our price range

Eagles coach Chip Kelly thinks he got a bargain in running back DeMarco Murray — and it’s a bargain he’s surprised his team was able to bag.

“I thought he would be out of our price range,” Kelly said.

As it turned out, the Eagles were able to get Murray for what’s being described as a five-year, $40 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Kelly said that as the Eagles started free agency, they thought the three best running backs were Murray, Ryan Mathews and Frank Gore. At first it appeared that they had a deal in place with Gore, but as it turned out the Eagles were able to sign both Murray and Mathews after Gore spurned them. Kelly said he now likes what he has at running back after trading LeSean McCoy.

“We thought the three best guys were Frank, DeMarco and Ryan. We wanted to target two of them and we ended up with two of them. Did we have a master plan that was exactly going to work out like this? No, but we went into it with the idea that if we lose LeSean we better get two guys. You’ve got to have as many good players as you can,” Kelly said.

Kelly said he thinks Murray, Mathews and Darren Sproles will give the Eagles a great backfield. It’s also an expensive backfield, even if Murray came a little cheaper than Kelly expected.

  1. The NFL rushing leader signed virtually the same deal that Pernell McPhee – a two-down player that wasn’t a starter last year – got from the Bears to rush the QB. That should squash the rhetoric about the RB no longer being expendable relics of the past.

  2. Next year at this time, Chip will be talking up his incoming freshman and getting ready for spring ball.

  3. Free agency and it’s interesting to watch Chip wheel and deal. And when the season rolls around, we’ll be watching other teams because the Eagles will have depleted any synergy they had.

  4. This was definitely a screw up with how he handled the RB dealings. But only a screw up like how Mike Tice screwed up the draft that one year by not submitting in time, and wasn’t able to get Terrell Suggs. But they did end up with Kevin Williams so it worked out in the end.

That’s how this Eagles thing worked too, they wanted Gore but messed it up and now they get Murray. it worked out …

  5. This just in…Bradford, Alonso, Murray, & Mathews just simoultaneously tore their MCLs.

  6. One of these RBs is going to be odd man out, and will be trade bait real, real soon. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if it’s Murray. Sign him to package him away.

  7. He’s full of it. Show’s he’s in over his head if he didn’t place a call to Murray’s agent during the tampering period.

  8. Complete panic move in reaction to the fan freak out. Not any better than befor fa started. Probably a little worse. The chipsaster continues. Your fifty million under the cap everything was in his price range. If you live in Philly you should hate this guy for insulting your intelligence everyday.

  9. The Eagles will always be a better team than yours in the East.

Chip is definitely the Smartest Coach here.

  10. Complacency Kills… Bold moves by Kelly. Maclin’s not worth $55M and McCoy’s lost a step. We gained a solid CB, a Westbrook-style RB, potentially great LB and RB, and Green Bay’s LB for two players. I will wait and see on Bradford BUT if healthy I believe he’s worth the gamble (though the draft picks were off). I want a Superbowl like the rest of you and we weren’t going to get there with what we had. We made great strides in a few days! Oh yeah… Fletcher and Matthews – don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

  11. So the Eagles end up with LB Alonzo the defensive rookie of the year Murray the NFL leading rusher, and Mathews for McCoy. The combined sum of the three still make less money then they were paying McCoy. I would say that’s a huge win for the Eagles and losing Murray hurts the Cowboys big time.

  12. Out of Bradford, Murray, & Matthews maybe one of them will be able to stay healthy for a substantial period of the season. Who will remain healthy is a crap shoot. The Eagles didn’t get away with anything here, they just took a gamble on what everyone else already knows.
It if were one marquis player that would be fine, but they are more likely to have a disaster than a winning season at this point.

  13. Eagles fans crack me up this year. Well obviously we overpayed, we had to so we have trade bait to (fill in the blank). If other teams wanted those players they would have paid them. Tomorrow genius Chip will tell us he has gotten first round pick offers for all his signings.

  14. So..what you trolls are saying is:

If the Eagles win more than us … than our team really really sucks.

  15. Kelly will say anything stupid to try and rationalize his irrational decisions. Eagles tried to buy a championship just a few years ago and it blew up in their faces (everyone remember the dream team), last year the Bucs tried to buy a team in FA and now the Eagles have apparently not learned their lesson……….again. Bradford is a bust and can’t stay healthy. Teams win with continuity and there’s no way these many major changes are going to mesh for at least 3-4 years and by then Kelly will be bailing.

  16. Eagles have holes along their o-line? Really? They played with 10, that’s right 10 different o-line combos last year and still were the NFL #1 ranked run blocking o-line. That’s the definition of depth. These are facts. Learn the game.

  17. Chip Kelly did this right….he got players and at the same time hurt a division rival.
McCoy was all about McCoy, Maclin was more than they wanted to spend and Jackson was a locker room cancer.
Good moves and if it works then all of the haters will be jumping back on the eagle bandwagon

    I second this !!!

  19. Today certainly helped shut-up many of the dopes who were second-guessing Kelly (and those with the wishful thinking that he’ll go back to college).

Eagles clearly have the most talented roster and the best coach in the NFC East. And that’s before the draft. They’re going to score 30+ a game and now have difference-makers on defense. Good luck preventing them from winning 10+ again, and another division title, and more…

That will shut-up the rest of the anti-Kelly trolls online and in the media.

  20. Ummm “No, but we went into it with the idea that if we lose LeSean we better get two guys.”

You didn’t lose LeSean, you traded him…. Something shady is going on here….

Factually impossible as the Eagles are yet to win a SuperBowl

How were the playoffs last season? Oh wait the Cowboys won the East

  23. you need 2 good RBs in this league today. not bad. will keep them (and particularly Murray) fresher as the season goes along. IF Mathews can stay healthy.
