DeMarco Murray plans to sign with the Eagles

If all goes as planned, DeMarco Murray will be an Eagle by the end of the day.

That’s the word from Adam Schefter of ESPN, who says that not only is Murray visiting Philadelphia today, but he is expecting to sign a contract with the Eagles.

The Cowboys and Murray have been in talks, and other teams including the Raiders and Jaguars have shown interest as well, but from all indications Murray wants to go to Philadelphia. He thinks he can win there, he thinks he’s a fit in the offense, and he’s close friends with Sam Bradford, the quarterback the Eagles just acquired in a trade with the Rams.

Murray is the reigning NFL rushing leader and Offensive Player of the Year, and he’s arguably the best free agent still available, two days into free agency. Adding him would give a major boost to Chip Kelly’s offense, and alleviate some concerns among Eagles fans that Kelly doesn’t have a plan in place.

Clearing cap space to acquire Murray certainly qualifies as a plan. Whether it’s a winning plan remains to be seen.

  1. This would mean that Reggie McKenzie essentially wiffed on all significant free agents targets.

  2. Good for him. He’s the ‘best’ of the running backs out there and that market has been soft. I’m thinking the Cowboys thought he’d come back to them tail between his legs but looks like another failed strategy in Cowboy land.

  3. Here come the Adrian Peterson to Dallas circle jerk rumors now. SMH.

Anyway, if the plan was to sign Murray all along, why sign Ryan Matthews when the team already has Darren Sproles? I understand Matthews cannot be counted on injury wise, but having three highly paid halfbacks seems interesting to say the least.

  4. Funny thing is Murray is a cheaper alternative to Shady McCoy. In terms of getting value through FA and dumping huge salaries, the Eagles off-season so far is underrated IMO.

  5. Let’s see if contracts of Matthews and Murray was cheaper than it was to keep McCoy around.

  6. I’m looking forward to seeing what the great master plan is working inside of Chip Kelly’s head, because I for one am dumbfounded in figuring out how all of these pieces (both acquired and let go) end up working their way toward a better team.

But it should be entertaining regardless of how it turns out.

  7. This is a game of leverage. He’s calling the Cowboys’ cards in order to get more money at the last minute.

  8. I commented last night that it was interesting that the Eagles hadn’t announced the Ryan Mathews signing yet…

I’m still not convinced he isn’t going back to Dallas, however, and I think the Eagles could better spend money at other positions.

  9. I’ll believe it when I see it. More likely the media is being worked by Demarco’s PR guys.

  10. Best of luck to him – just glad Oaktown didn’t overpay for him. And I suspect the interest they had in him was embellished by the media.

  11. Love the player but not sure I get Chip’s logic here. He’s paying three RBs now. Last time I checked, the following was true:

    1. There’s only one football to carry.
    2. RB is the easiest spot in the league to replace (and it’s not even close).

Jerry and Stephen have played this one just right from Day 1. Dallas will be better off in the end by not overpaying.

  12. Are all of these moves improving the Eagles? Is Murray a significant upgrade on McCoy? Will Alonso be more productive than Cole? Is Bradford ever going to stay healthy enough to contribute? Ditto Mathews. Maxwell is good, but they lost Maclin.

John Wooden said, “Never confuse activity with achievement.” Lots of action, but how much progress?

  13. The best place for him is Dallas but Jerry is playing games and probably wants to angle for Adrian Peterson. Murray went for 1800 last year, I highly doubt Peterson or any back is going to bring that production, especially not worth the price they’d pay for it. I dont think Murray is necessarily “special” but he fits perfectly in Dallas.

  14. As an Eagles fan we can’t get our hopes up. We all new Foles wasn’t Chips guy. He never gave him his unwavering support. He didn’t like Shady’s style. But Murray would be to good to be true. This isn’t Dream Team 2.0. This is let’s hope they can stay healthy because Chip can score points. The defense was lame. Now with that maybe getting better who knows.

  15. Ryan mathews goes from celebrating to saying “wait… what… I’m a backup? Am I even ahead of darren sproles on the depth chart?!?! WHY DID I SIGN HERE!!!!’

  16. Which pair start more games together: Bradford and Murray or Sanchez and Matthews?

Murray makes me think of an adult film star: everything you’ve seen is great but I think the eagles are going to find out he’s got a lot of miles put on him.

  17. Boom!! Congrats Eagle fans….glad we got Shady. You just made up for some of the other blunders Chip made this off season. The QB think is a head scratcher, but having Murry makes up for some of it and makes up for the Ryan Mathews signing too.

  18. Let me get this right.

They get rid of Lesean’s contract only to turn around and give it to DeMarco?

  19. So they ship off McCoy because they can’t afford him but then bring in the top free agent running back? How does this work?

  20. Exciting but strange offseason for Chip “Uunderwood” Kelly and our new look Brittle Birds!

  21. No reason he shouldn’t have at least 2 great years in Philly if their line stays somewhat healthy. Great downfield runner, as well as way above average catching the ball in the backfield.

Solid signing if it happens, by taking some pressure off of Bradford. However, as a Skins’ fan, hate to see him still in the NFC East.

  22. What is going on? Chip makes roster moves as fast as he calls plays. Don’t see how all these peices fit, but then there could be 53 completely different players by the end of the week.

  23. So they’re spending about $11 mil for two new running backs, and they traded a $1.5 mil QB for a $12mil QB, but all of his moves have been about the cap? Ok. Well at least now Bradford will have a friend to hang out with when he’s on IR in week 6.

  24. Highly unlikely he plays a full season again in his career since he was playing for a contract.

Highly unlikely he runs for anywhere near as many yards without the offensive line he was behind.

Highly unlikely I remain a DeMarco Murray fan if he signs against a division rival.

  25. Not a fan of either team but this doesn’t make a lot of sense. I listened to the talking heads try to explain the McCoy thing by saying an elite, expensive, running back isn’t needed in Kelly’s offense. Yet here is a more elite and more expense back.

  26. This does not show that chip has a plan. this shows that he has no plan. He is reacting to the bad press and fan reaction. Not a good idea. Murray has made it through one yr without injury. If dallas wanted him back he would be in dallas right now.

Chip stated that he did not want to pay mccoy 11 million a yr and that is why he had to trade him. so pay two guys 13 million and throw in whatever polk and sproles make and this has all the makings of a crap shoot.

    The chipsaster continues.

  27. So how are they going to split all those carries among 3 guys and pay him the $8M he wants?

I say fine. We can go younger, faster and maybe a guy that can hang on to the ball and not lead the league in fumbles and hit the holes faster. I’m sorry to see him go, but he’s leaving the best line in football to play for an IR prone friend, an “ok” offensive line and a team short at least one receiver.

One thing for sure, it’ll be a show at the Linc the first time he fumbles.

  28. There is a fact most folks are missing here, that makes the signing of Murray a very distinct possibility in Philly. Ryan Mathews has “agreed” to a contract with the Eagles. He has not yet signed the contract. A look at the Eagles web site seems to confirm this. There is no reference to Mathews s a signed player and he is not included on the roster, as are Bradford and Maxwell already. Also, the Eagles have not introduced him as an Eagle in any press conference.

  29. I dont know what people like about Murray, I could have ran for 1000 yards with the Cowboys Offensive line. Before last year the guy couldnt stay on the field. Bad signing.

  30. Murray is not that good , just look at the little success J.Randle had while spotting Murray, that OL that the boys have, im sure big jerry’s world isn’t worried , Murray will not have the success that shady had in kelly’s offense , plus last season was Murray’s only full healthy season

  31. Trade for Adrian Peterson instead and just really mess with Dallas. Then they won’t get Peterson, and Murray seems so salty towards Dallas right now he may not resign there.

He was the reason the Cowboy were as good as they were last season, he allowed Romo not to have a chance to muck it up for them.

  32. $6 million for Murray and $12 million for Bradford in a week is prudent cap management there Chip.

  33. Signing Cowboys makes me feel dirty all over. *shiver*

Are they leaving any money around in that cap to re-sign Fletcher Cox and Michael Kendricks next year?

  34. Murray > McCoy. McCoy has flashy runs but he jukes around too much and doesn’t hit the hole hard, too many negative plays. With Matthews having NOT signed in Philly as reported, Murray will be an Eagle.

  35. Check out the Eagles website, paricularly their roster page. All players who’ve been acquired over the last 2 days are listed on the roster–EXCEPT Ryan Matthews. His contract is not official yet.

My guess is that they Gored him–or are going to if they can get Murray to sign.

For all of you “the sky is falling” people, it’s only day 3 of the new league year. You have the draft, OTAs, training camp and the season doesnt start until Sept 10th.

For all of you Shady fans scratching their heads, Philly writer Paul Domowitch on Tuesday revealed that after he led the league in rushing in 2013, McCoy was making noises he wanted his contract upgraded–even though he just signed his new one in 2012. The same thing Jackson did after the Saints loss in the playoffs at the end of the 2013 season.

Jackson, Maclin, and Shady all had career years in Kelly’s offense. Jackson’s numbers fell off last year–he led the league in ypc but he only had what, 50 catches or whatever it was and only 4-5 TDs. It”ll be interesting to see how Maclin does with Alex Smith.

  36. You always take the money, but I’d be willing to bet he’ll miss that ridiculous O-line in Dallas

  37. Asked to expound his comment about “not mortgaging the future to trade up for Mariota,” Kelly was heard to say, “Well, it ain’t mortgaging if the player involved never really was an Eagle to begin with.”

I think Murray or Mathews really will look good in Tampa orange.

  38. He is signing for sure. Apparently Chip Kelly is skipping Oregon’s Pro-Day so that Demarco Murray could use the teams private jet to fly to Philly and Chip wants to be there to meet him when he arrives.

And what’s with people saying Eagles have no defense? They still need a safety but so do lots of other teams. Their front 7 is stacked and deep. As of right now it appears they got players like Demeco Ryans, Najee Goode, Vinny Curry, Brandon Boykin, Nolan Carroll, Travis Long and Beau Allen coming off the bench. Not too shabby at all if you ask me.

  39. I say both Mathews and Murray sign. Each of them get 15 carries a game (instead of 25 per) and both of them extend their careers by NOT being run into the ground as they have been. Sproles stays on as the punt/kick returner/specialist/third down back.

Chris Polk hasn’t signed his RFA tender yet, so the Eagles can rescind that and Polk becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent immediately.

  40. Ryan Matthews still hasn’t SIGNED a deal, he agreed to terms with the team…….Looks like DeMarco swooped in and stole his spot.

  41. Geoff Mosher is now reporting Mathews may back out of the deal. He hasn’t officially signed yet. Apparently he doesn’t want to be a back up to Murray. I say good! Mathews AND Murray doesn’t make much sense. Polk and Sproles can do just fine taking the load off of Murray.

  42. Honestly don’t like it the Eagles…

If Kelly wants to continuously subject his offense and defense to so many plays a game….he needs healthy KIDS that he can turn over every 2 seasons…

You get rid of a healthy back like McCoy, and for more money…

You bring in Mathews and Murray…

Two backs that are notorious for getting hurt.

This is looking like a recipie for disaster.

  43. Overpay for Murray go ahead as fast paced as that offense is he may be hurt by the end of the 1st game or fumbled 5 times. That dude peaked last year and the boys put a ton of mileage on him. Hopefully the Cowboys draft Gurlee or Gordon bc the rest of these FA’s are garbage.

  44. Congrats to Murray on the payday. Let’s move on, Cowboys. Sign a cheap FA and go get Gurley. Good luck to Murray…except twice a year.

  45. One of the rare times Jerry Jones is showing correct restraint. Non Hall of Fame talent type 400+ carry guys, especially ones that were already injury prone to begin with, are never the answer to any question. Chip Kelly is crazy.

  46. So…Murray is a white guy? That racist Chip Kelly is at it again.

    Stephen A Smith = bozo

  47. He will be injured by game 3 and who is Bradford? O that’s right he is the other guy who will be on PUP list by game 4! Good for you Jerry for not over paying a high profile player because the media said so!

  48. This is a TRAVESTY. What kind of operation is Chip Kelly running?? First, they hold onto Riley Cooper, and now this?? I’m just saying. This is crazy. Wow. I’m just saying. Just talking it out here. Sooner or later somebody’s gonna start asking questions. Wow.

  49. Lmao at all the Cowgirls fans here that don’t know PFF ranked Eagles injury-riddled O-Line #1 in the NFL and Dallas #2!!! Imagine how good they’re going to be when they’re all actually healthy!!! Knowledge is your friend, people.

  50. Sooooo….let me understand this.

Yesterday Chip came out and said the McCoy move and others like it had to do as much with the salary cap as anything else.

As of Today…in just the RB and QB positions…Chip has traded away McCoy and Foles @ roughly $10.5mil for Bradford, Matthews and Murray for…what…probably $28mil ($13 for Bradford, $5 for Matthews and probably about $10 for Murray)…

    Huh?

And is this really an upgrade???

  51. Sooooo….let me understand this.

  52. Although I haven’t agreed with most of Chip Kelly’s moves, landing DeMarco Murray at a reasonable price would be a smart move, esp since Ryan Mathews has not signed yet.

And before everyone overreacts to the loss of Jeremy Maclin, remember that Jordan Matthews had a productive season in his rookie year and he’ll get even more touches in 2015.

And I’m saying this as a Cowboys fan.

  53. Murray and Mathews on the same team is not a bad signing–as long as either one is healthy at any given time. Together they have 2 complete 16 games season out of 8.

Otoh, if they can stay healthy, look out. A combined 1800-2000 rushing yards is very likely.

  54. Another headscratcher. DeMarco is a fumbler coming off 400 carries and he has had injury problems. Not to mention he plays a position where most of the good players are shells of themselves by the time they reach 27. I don’t blame DeMarco for going after the money, but also don’t blame Dallas for not overpaying him. If the Eagles pay him anywhere close to what he’s rumored to be asking, this will be another strange move in what’s becoming the strangest offseasons for an NFL franchise, that I can ever remember.

  55. If they can sign Murray to a more cap-friendly contract than McCoy had, then Kelly will look like a genius for trading away that bad contract for a stud defender (still in his rookie deal) and picking up the NFL’s leading FA rusher. Well played, I’d say.

  56. Chip’s all about the running game and he wants a North-South demon to exploit the holes his system provides. So having 3 backs who complement each other is a must for him, there could easily be 500 touches for all 3 backs combined next season and Chip won’t be giving any of them 450 of them alone.

Also, it might be possible to get Murray and Mathews for what they would’ve paid Shady, coupled with Sproles that’s an upgrade (especially if you throw in Alonso).

  57. Perfect plan for Murray. He goes to a team that has the potential to win big, he’s part of a RB committee so he won’t be run into the ground, thus prolonging his career, and best of all, he gets to stick it to the Cowboys at least twice a year.

  58. i for one am willing to give chip a little room. i think there are several more shoes to drop.

believe me, i think he overpaid for bradford, but i’m sure he knows what he is trying to accomplish. and given that he has shown himself to be ahead of the curve during his short career, i’ll wait to see whos on the field come september before i judge what he is doing. two 10-6 years given the state of the team during andy’s last 8 games is better than i expected.

  59. From a fellow Cowboy Fan- Maclin gone, Desean Jackson gone, Mccoy gone, trade away Foles who is only 1 year removed from only throwing 2 INTs all year, granted he wasn’t as good last year (hard to live up to that every year), but his year cut short by injury… So you trade him for a guy that blew out his ACL… Twice. LOL. Go ahead sign another running QB and give up multiple draft picks to get another QB… By the way Foles is ecstatic to be outta there… Too good! Making Jerry Jones look like a genius! Actually the Redskins are looking brilliant compared to this. Maybe Chip is just smarter than everyone else.. I look forward to watching this play out!

  60. Well, this plan of Chip Kelly’s could pay off big time, or it could be an unmitigated disaster if all three players – Sam Bradford, Demarco Murray & Ryan Matthews – miss significant time to injury. One thing’s for sure: the Eagles new backfield is the All-Injury Prone backfield.

  61. The Eagles basically gave up Shady McCoy, Jeremy Maclin, and Nick Foles for this guy….

Essentially that’s what happened. No way it’s near worth it in my opinion. They are a worse team for it.

  62. Murray will only slow down Chip Kelly’s offense and allow the defense time to sub in fresh players. Every time the man has a run of more than 15 yards, he needs to head to the sideline to rest for a few plays. And that’s not even in a speed offense.

  63. If Murray signs with Philly, at that moment pen hits paper the compensation for the Cowboys, Cardinals or Bucs for AP just went up considerably. Jerry knows it will take a stud RB to get his team over the hump in the nfc, Adding Adrian to that o line will more than likely do that as well as give AD a great chance this season to break Dickerson’s record. The fact that an A- back in Murray could run for 1800+, and the fact that AD is an A+ back should easily equate to 2,000 yds plus. The consensous is that Spielman has been looking for a teams 1st round pick this draft to even start talks, just went up by another high round pick also or an equation of a few mid rounders to seal the deal.

  64. Did the Eagles acquire Pinky & The Brain or James Andrews to be the upcoming team doctor, by chance? Perhaps, they are attempting to combine Murray, Matthews, and Sproles into 1 tailback. Otherwise, I am thoroughly convinced the Eagles will be running the wing-T next season.

  65. The fine print is that Shady was not Chip’s guy/style of back. You can repeat “but the cap?” all day long, it wont change the fact that Chip wants north/south in a RB, not east/west.

  66. So they had to dismantle the team that they had due to salary cap reasons, yet they are now looking to sign two free-agent running backs for a significant amount of cash? Sounds pretty fishy to me.

  67. As a Packers fan, I’m shocked that Cowboys fans think this is doom, Murray is a fumbler, yes he racked up a nice year…(in his contract year) and with CJ Spiller out there, well he would scare the hell out of me if they get him behind that line. That’s the guy I hope they don’t get.

  68. I love all the moves Chip Kelly is making. Like all NFL teams, the Eagles can only win if their main guys stay healthy. Tom Brady missed a season once, and the Patriots didn’t win any playoff games. So nobody’s health is guaranteed. The Broncos are betting on an injury prone Peyton Manning to stay healthy. They’re not winning anything without a healthy Manning. Indy isn’t going anywhere is Andrew Luck goes down. Pittsburgh is going nowhere without Big Ben. But all these teams only have one goal in mind, and it’s the Super Bowl. If Sam Bradford was coming out of college this year he’d easily be the number one pick. He already understands how to read NFL defenses, so he’s even that much farther ahead. If Mark Sanchez was coming out of college this year, he’d be a top ten pick. Think back to Stve Young’s early days in Tampa Bay before Bill Walsh picked him up. Steve Young was a bust in Tampa Bay, but Tampa Bay was a bad organization. Chip Kelly is nobody’s fool. Eagles fans, sit back and enjoy the ride!

  69. I’m not going to be completely sold that he’s signing until the name is on the bottom line.

  70. The flip side of “Chip Kelly is an idiot, what is he doing” is Chip Kelly is a genius and he is two steps ahead of the game.

    This is getting good.

  71. not much room for bargaining if you tell the whole world you wanna play for the eagles and personally called the coach you’re dying to be an eagle…

  72. Only way Jerry Jones can make for this is by acquiring Adrian Peterson, and I mean the ONLY way. People are correct that decent running backs are a dime a dozen, but great running backs are rare. A great running back spreads the defense thin, opens up the pass game, makes the defense have to account for him tangibly and intangibly. There’s no guarantee that the next RB will possess the right instincts to utilize Dallas’s great O-line. The amount of pressure Murray took of Romo, that allowed Dez to terrorize secondaries and Witten a red-zone threat can’t be accounted for. There’s no one in this draft that can fill his shoes this year. The only guy that can justify Jerry being cheap, is Adrian Peterson.

  73. So, you get rid of Shady McCoy to bring in Murray who was run into the ground in Dallas, GREAT MOVE!

  74. Go ahead eagles get Murray. The guy who fumbles when u need him most. Cowboys o-line can help any decent running back get 1800 yards. Chip do cowboys nation a favor and at the same time screw eagles for years to come. Yeah baby

  75. Loved Chip Kelly when he came on board, All these moves just make me curious. As an Eagle fan I’m trying to be patient. 2 years ago the phrase was “in Chip we trust” Let’s settle down and give Chip a chance. The guy is a football innovator and has already proven he knows what he’s doing even if it’s not the conventional way typical NFL franchises like to do things.

  76. Cowboys were never going to resign Murray, that is why they ran him into the ground last year. If Murray signs with the Eagles there is going to be a bidding war for Adrian. Dallas, Tampa, Arizona are going to be all going for him and I think the Vikings are gonna make out pretty nice!

  77. I wouldn’t get too excited Eagles fans! Murray is not a plug and play back. The offense needs to be tailored around his strengths. Murray is an all around good back in that he is a good, physical runner, that blocks and catches well but he is a back that needs several steps to get to full speed. So unless Chip Kelly decides to change to the I-fomation 90% of the time, Murray will not be nearly as effective as he was last year. As much as I liked what he did last season, I don’t think he’s worth what he wants and Dallas can either sign a free agent or draft a back that will give similar results. Mostly, he was the beneficiary of a really, really good O-Line and great run scheme. To me, LeSean McCoy was a perfect fit for Kelly’s offense but they didn’t want to pay him. Now they will pay a guy who doesn’t fit their offense? I understand them wanting to stick it to a division rival but this is a big mistake! I see this as being the worst signing of the year and Chip Kelly will be back coaching in college next year if not sooner! Dallas will win the East again!

  78. Do people not remember last year? Shady always trying to find something opening up and losing 2-3 yards when he could have gained 1 or atleast get tackled for no gain? That happened CONSTANTLY.

That is why I think Kelly traded McCoy. He simply didn’t fit this offense.

  79. I am a Cowboys fan and I hope he signs with Philly. Demarco is very average at the best. He is behind the best offensive line in football. Three of the five were in the pro bowl last year and Free is a former pro bowl player as well. I am tired of him fumbling all the time, not finishing runs off by running out of bounds, and being injured. In 4 years he was only healthy once. If Dallas brings in A.P. which I think they will, super bowl is guaranteed. They should have one last year. They went 12-4, two losses were due to Tony being injured and the other two were the first game of the year and then losing to Philly and coming back to beat them. Then they got robbed with the Dez pass and they spanked Seattle at home. Good riddens!

  80. Why does everyone believe that AP will come to Dallas? If they wanted to spend that kind of money then they would’ve kept Murray. Dallas won’t pay Murray what he’s asking because he’s had an injury-prone career and last year was an anomaly. Better to go into the draft and get Melvin Gordon or Todd Gurley, either of whom would be excellent fits for the Cowboys, and would be far cheaper on their rookie deals, allowing Dallas to use FA dollars on defense.

  81. Cowboys need to go after AP then, he would be an awesome asset to the already powerful offense. I know all the AP haters out there but come on! Look what he does behind a mediocre offense, imagine what he would do behind Dallas’s offense!

  82. Dallas will be fine. He is good but Murry is not all that and a bag of “Chips”! lol! Dallas should go get Forte. I doubt Peterson is going to fit in their salary cap and still will need to work out a deal for Dez, if they are going to keep him beyond the tag, or the tag will cost them more.

  83. The lack of talent on Phiily after chip gutted team made Oakland a better choice I can’t believe on paper Oakland was a much better choice

  84. Don’t worry Cowboys fans…if Murray goes to Philly it’s okay…We have one of the best O-lines who ever the RB will be he will fit our plans no matter what.

  85. Neither Murray or Bradford will see game 1. Both will be shipped to Titans for the #2 pick. Titans wanted both of those guys to begin with. Chip gets his guy at QB but lost most weapons and failed to improve the D.

  86. Next move for Chip: Trade Murray, Sproles, and Bradford for 6… 7th round draft picks. Bring in Tebow to run the spread, tell Eagles fans to eff off and pray to Jesus it all works. Besides no one in any NFL locker-room will ever trust Chip Kelly again, he’ll never win a locker-room ever.

  87. Next move for Chip, trade Murray, Sproles, and Bradford for 6… 7th round draft picks. Bring in Tebow to run the spread, tell Eagles fans to eff off and pray to Jesus it all works. Besides no one in any NFL locker-room will ever trust Chip Kelly again.

  88. As a Cowboy fan, I wish DeMarco the best, just like we wished DeMarco (eh the other DeMarco) the best the year before. Murray has some good years left in him. But let’s not forget Randle had a better average per carry than did Murray even if he isn’t as durable (and likes pilfering underwear).

I’m pretty impressed with JJ’s business decisions the last 2 to 3 years. He’s going in the right direction. I could see JJ drafting Murray’s replacement just like he did for D. Ware.

Actually more concerned about LB than RB. All we have is Sean Lee (pro bowler if he can stay healthy) and Anthony Hitchens. We need LBs – stat.

    _____________________________
You definitely make some good points. If the Cowboys didn’t figure they could afford what Murray was asking for, I highly doubt they can really afford what Peterson will want. Yes, they can rework contracts and make other moves to clear up space, but that would just make the hit even harder later on. Plus, just because the Vikings said they wouldn’t force Peterson to stay if he truly wanted to leave, they never said they’d let him go without getting something in return. So, if Peterson does leave eventually, it will most likely be by way of a trade he helped arrange as opposed to simply being released. So, the Cowboys would most likely have to pay more than they could really afford, and give up a valuable pick that they could have turned into a cheap asset for the next 4 or 5 years.
    ot
As for the Eagles RB depth chart, it’s important to remember that Matthews has yet to sign his contract. Both sides could simply agree to walk away from the deal. It would make the Eagles roster less crowded (and less costly) at the RB position. It would also give Matthews a chance to go to a team that would want him as their starter. He might also be able to score a higher payday from one of the teams that would have missed out on Murray. With Peterson not on the market, there’s going to be a big drop off when Murray signs. Matthews’ stock could easily rise.

They went 12-4, two losses were due to Tony being injured and the other two were the first game of the year and then losing to Philly and coming back to beat them. Then they got robbed with the Dez pass and they spanked Seattle at home. Good riddens!

First of all, that should be good riddance. A mistake like that should never be your drop the mic moment. Secondly, if you think the Cowboys got jobbed in the Seattle game, then you should at least be willing to admit that the refs gave them an even bigger gift in the game before that.

Additionally, why do you think they’ll end of with Peterson. Would JJ like to have him? Sure. That doesn’t mean that he’s going to get him. Despite your trashing of Murray (wonder if you did that while he was carrying your team on the way to winning offensive player of the year?), the Cowboys DID want him back. They just wanted him back at a price they could afford. Do you really think Peterson would be willing to sign for LESS, when he’s already set to make more than $12 million this year? Yes, they could rework some contracts and make some other moves to open up cap space, but that would just make the hit harder later. Besides, just because the Vikes are willing to let him go if he really wants to leave, they never said they’d let him go without getting something back. So, the Cowboys would have to give the Vikings something of value on top of what they’d have to pay Peterson…most likely a draft pick. That pick, in turn, could be used to draft a valuable player at a team-friendly price for the next 4 or 5 years. In the end, the Cowboys would end up back in cap space purgatory, with a reduced ability to fix the problem in a less painful way.

Finally, the Cowboys O-line is very good, but let’s not oversell it. The cowboys offense picked up when Murray was able to carry a much heavier load. That took a ton of pressure off of Romo (and his bad back), and let him be more efficient with the ball and take fewer risks. Furthermore, the balance in the Cowboys’ offense last season kept opposing defenses honest. They couldn’t simply go all out against either the pass or the run. That, in turn, takes pressure off of the O-line. If Murray’s replacement CAN’T replicate his production and reliability, then things could start to fall apart a lot quicker than you’re willing to admit.
