Michael Johnson schedules visit with Vikings

Before the Buccaneers released defensive end Michael Johnson, we got word that the Bengals would be interested in a reunion with their former player.

They may need to outbid the guy who ran the defense when Johnson was in Cincinnati to make that reunion happen. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Johnson’s first visit since Wednesday’s release will be with the Vikings, who are coached by former Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

The Vikings re-signed their own free agent defensive end Everson Griffen last year and were rewarded with 12 sacks from a player moving into a full-time role for the first time. Brian Robison should also be back, but the Vikings don’t have a clear third man for a rotation and Zimmer would probably like the idea of adding one that rushed the passer well for him in Cincinnati.

With $7 million already in his pocket without any offset, Johnson can probably afford to prioritize fit in an effort to boost his stock back up after the flop in Tampa. We’ll see if that leads to another stint with Zimmer.

  1. Doesn’t change the fact that the Vikings are horrible…dumpster fire is more like it.

  2. Mike Zimmer is very fond of Johnsonafter their relationship in Cincy. I would bet the farm that Johnson becomes a Viking. Will be a great addition to the D.

  3. That would be a nice signing. Zim likes his defensive line rotation and they really only had two defensive ends last year. I hear Johnson wasn’t used properly for his skills in Tampa last year so he would probably welcome the opportunity to get back in a defense that suits him.

  4. Vikings are trying to become the Bengals of the North. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say. Nice to see Zimmer is stuck in the “old days” trying to get his old guys back rather than getting new and developing.

  5. As soon as I saw him cut I figured I would see this headline. If Zimmer gets him and make him the probowler he was with Cinci that would be great. Robinson underperformed last year and him opposite of Griffen would be lethal.

  6. Pretty clear either he goes to Cincy or goes to Minnesota. He’s got good relationships still with all the guys here in Cincy but obviously has a connection with Zimmer as well. This is just me but I’d rather have MJ back then going and signing Fairly or Hardy. Hardy has off the field issues to sort out still and Fairly has issues on the field such as staying motivated and keeping his weight off. The Bengals priority should be getting a guy back that has been very productive for them instead of going to get guys that are uncertain. If Johnson plan fails Hardy is probably the next best option. I don’t want Fairly, there’s a reason the Lions don’t want him back.

  7. Going from Mike Zimmer to Lovie Smith had to be a rude shock to the system for Johnson. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he jumps at the chance to re-unite with one of the best defensive coaches in the game and the guy who arguably equipped him to get that big payday from the Bucs in the first place.

  8. I’d take Hardy over Johnson any day of the week. And twice on Sunday. The dude is much better than Johnson. The only thing about Johnson is the relationship we have with him. I wouldn’t be upset to have him back at all.

  9. If the D-line can be Griffen, Floyd, Joseph, and Michael Johnson with Robison and their crew of DTs rotating in, this should become an area of considerable strength.

One of the best ways to make a secondary look good is with a consistent pass rush.

If they can find a better middle linebacker this defense could take another big step forward.

  10. Johnson couldn’t succeed playing next to one of the best DT in the NFL in Gearld McCoy. I doubt he will be any better on the Vikings but SKOL Vikings, right?

  11. Going to your 3rd franchise in 3 years is a sure sign of success.
I hope the vikings can bid enough to sign him.
He is the type locker room presence desired by the vikings.

  12. He was a square peg being forced into a round hole in Tampa. Les is far from being on the same level of Zimmer. That said, he had great effect on the d line under Zim, and would pick right up where he left off in Cincy under him. After all, it was his performance in Cincy under Zim that led to Tampa giving him that big time contract last offseason. He didn’t underachieve there, he was injured as well as being that square peg. In Minny, he’d be put in the proper spot to make the ultimate playmaking ability just like the past. Welcome home MJ.

  13. And meanwhile our little sisters to the east are sifting through paper work to find the best athlete available off the street!

    Embrace the choke packer trolls!

  14. I guess the Vikings can lose with this guy as well as they could lose with any other guy. The losing is a given. Only the cast of characters remains to be seen….

Talk when your HOF QB can win in the payoffs…

  15. It’s a perfect fit, as Johnson has never won anything.

The Vikings have never won anything.

The owners have never won anything.

The GM has never won anything.

The head coach has never won anything.

Their own home-grown players have never won anything.

It’s a culture of losing that’s almost unparalleled. 54 years of utter futility sets a pretty high standard for failure.

  16. It’s a culture of losing that’s almost unparalleled. 54 years of utter futility sets a pretty high standard for failure…

Failure is watch Aaron Rodgers turn in playoff losing performances. He and Manning can compete for the stats.
Kinda sad the best the Packers have…is just not good enough to win

  17. That latest Lombardi Trophy, his Superbowl MVP award and 2 league MVP awards all say otherwise.

But don’t let silly things like actual facts get in the way of your delusional trolling.

  18. Packer Trolls stay off of Vikings stories

    CHOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Ahh…so cabbage and sandblaster are our version of ariani and rosstuckershair. I see now….sorry about them. I don’t think talking junk about Rodgers is a particularly good comeback though seeing as he’s the reigning MVP but I understand why you are trying.

    ==================================
Except that he’s 6-5 in the playoffs with a Super Bowl already under his belt. Same playoff record as Brees and Tarkenton, and a better playoff record than a multitude of other QB’s with losing records or those who can’t make the playoffs.

  21. Hes a good guy. decent player but not great. BUt good addition. Love Zim and would love to see him do well for vikings. Also would love to have him back in cincy. Good luck MJ, but hes going with zimmer or marvin

  22. In the unlikely event that anybody else sees this post, I should probably say that if this were to happen, we would likely find ourselves with a case study in scheme fits for players. We will probably see the Bengals Johnson and not the Tampa Johnson, which will make this DL pretty solid and the D overall that much better. Hope it goes through.

  23. I don’t know why you guys are upset with me. It’s not my fault that the Vikings have never won anything and are unlikely to win anything in the foreseeable future. I didn’t build that loser culture or foster that loser mentality. YOU people did that.

The facts are the facts. The Packers, from the NFL’s smallest market, are arguably the most successful franchise in league history. The Vikings, in a pretty large market, are arguably the least successful.

Yet somehow, you guys want to puff up your little chests and tell us all how great the Vikings are…? No wonder they stink. There’s no motivation whatsoever for them to make any real changes. You people are clearly perfectly happy with all this losing.

The Wilf’s are laughing all the way to the bank. What other business could they possibly be in, where said business could underperform to the point of being an absolute joke, yet still take in hundreds-of-millions of dollars from a bunch of hoodwinked rubes?

Maybe you guys should have listened to Jarred Allen before he bolted for greener pastures and “embraced the suck.” Instead of telling everyone how wonderful the Vikings are, maybe you should just get honest about it all and start raising cain about how terrible they are and how poorly the organization has been run.

Trust me, the NFL and every team in it has a finger on the pulse of social media. As far as the Wilf’s know, they can continue to be terrible with no consequences whatsoever. It even seems like the worse they suck, the better you people like it.

Or you could just blame me…. yeah, that oughta fix it.

  24. That latest Lombardi Trophy, his Superbowl MVP award and 2 league MVP awards all say otherwise…

    So does Peyton..

Who cares about an MVP trophy. Rodgers is getting past his prime…and it’s getting tougher to be the one man show. He will coast…just like Manning

  26. Or you could just blame me…. yeah, that oughta fix it…

Who is blaming a Packer Owner cheesehead? You must be a little sensitive over the last 4 years of epics playoff fails when your HOF QB was in his prime…

  27. Why would I be sensitive? My team has had a good run for a very long time and all indicators point to that run continuing for quite some time to come. It’s a culture of winning, built to continue winning. I’m all good with that.

You should be sensitive but your commentary makes it quite clear that you’re perfectly happy with the state of affairs in Minnesota. A culture of losing, that’s not doing anything at all to change that culture. I dunno, maybe you like it that way…?

The facts will always be the facts. One of these teams is a perennial winner while the other is a perennial loser. You can troll until your fingers fall off but that won’t change the facts.

  28. rot row bengals….there goes the plan of re-signing him to get the much needed pass rusher!

  29. LOL, Brady just won the SB and he’s 37, Favre nearly did it at 40 and so did Manning. But yeah, the reigning mvp who threw 38 tds vs 5 picks and had a qb rating of 112.2 is on the decline. C’mon, don’t be like the other trolls, make some sense. He’s the best in the game and will be for another 5 years at least. We’ve got defense issues and a sackless coach. Go after those.

    1) “It’s not my fault that the Vikings have never won anything and are unlikely to win anything in the foreseeable future. I didn’t build that loser culture or foster that loser mentality. YOU people did that.”

    A) The Vikings have a franchise record of 457-401-10. Since sconnies have trouble with math (as well as writing, reading, standing up), I’ll clareify for you…that means as a franchise we are OVER .500….meaning WE WIN MORE THAN WE LOSE. How exactly does one have a “Loser Culture or mentality” when one wins more than it loses?

    2) “The facts are the facts. The Packers, from the NFL’s smallest market, are arguably the most successful franchise in league history. The Vikings, in a pretty large market, are arguably the least successful.”

    A) The Vikings are in the 6th SMALLEST market. (Get your “FACTS” straight)

    B) Its not our fault your market is small; I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t want to be surrounded by perpetually drunk, delusional and overweight sconnies.

    C) The Greenbay Packers have only been to ONE more Superbowl than the Vikings. You cheesheads heavily, and overly, weight winning that game. It’s great to win, but getting there means you beat out every other team but one. By finishing 2nd out of 32 it puts you in the 97th Percentile…hard to claim we’re one of the “least successful” since we’ve been in the 97Th percentile more than 2/3rds of the league.

    3) “There’s no motivation whatsoever for them to make any real changes.”

    A) Minnesota and the wilfs build new 1 billion dollar stadium while sconnies can’t afford to do more than slap on a new coat of paint on their rapidly aging and outdated “stadium”.

    B) Draft wizardry bringing in multiple first round picks almost every year including last year with a new Franchise QB (potential) and a dynamic athletic beast of a LB.

    C) Buying up the smart ones that got out from under the delusion that Rodgers is a savior and escaped your miserable excuse for a state.

    4) “Maybe you guys should have listened to Jarred Allen”

    A) Yeah, listen to the guy who was also convinced he was still a premier defensive end. Ask Chicago just how much talk Jared Allen lived up to last year.

  31. And as predicted, here come the purple faithful, telling me all about how great the Vikings are.

Hey, believe me, if you people are happy with the Vikings’ state of affairs, the rest of the league is ecstatic! Especially here in the NFCN, where the Vikings can be counted on to give up 2 easy wins apiece to the other 3 teams.

  32. First off, I’m not a Packers’ fan, but:

Minnesota is the 15th largest TV market in the country and ranks around the same in NFL market ratings, so it’s middle of the pack, and hardly the sixth smallest in the NFL. (Get your “FACTS” straight)

The Packers have been to 5 Super Bowls and won 4 of them. The Vikings have won none of four. The Bears have only been in two and have won only 1. I prefer the one win to any amount of appearances with all losses.

The Metrodome was the biggest piece of garbage in the NFL and MLB and NCAA. Built cheaply and it looked like it. Awful place to watch any game (I went to the U of M, and had absolutely no desire to watch anything there). That’s why a new stadium needs to be built. Lambeau is one of the few classic outdoor stadiums left in the NFL. The old Met was a great place, too. It’s always sad to see those classics go. I’m sure the Vikings’ stadium new stadium will be great, but going to a game is going to be a lot more expensive than before. Green Bay has done a really nice job with their renovations, while still keeping an “old school” environment about the place, rather than all of these new stadiums going up with the ambience of shopping malls.

The jury is still out on Bridgewater and Barr. They looked pretty good last year. Barr is no more of a “dynamic, athletic beast” than 80% of the linebacker’s in the NFL.

Wait until the Vikings at least get a winning season, let alone make the playoffs, before you start yapping.

No, you are not a Packer fan, you are a Bears fan, are you SERIOUSLY calling out the Vikings organization? Look in the mirror! Your dumpster fire franchise is not going anywhere in the near future and talking about winning seasons and playoffs, the Vikings made the playoffs in 2012, how about your Bears?

Nice move getting a 32 year old DB!

  34. I suspect that Johnson is only interested in jacking up his price by first visiting Minnesota before returning to Cincy to sign his next deal.

He suffered thru a horrible season of losing in Tampa Bay and the only difference between Tampa Bay and Minnesota is a few wins and about 80 degrees.

  35. Vikings won’t let him leave without a contract because Zimmer already knows how good he can be in his defence. Done deal, sorry Cincinnati

  36. I love it when Packer fans come here to troll, and end up being trolled from responses of Viking fans to other packer trolls. Its like a troll within a troll…inception.

  37. if you packer really think the vikings are going in a bad direction, thats great, zimmers defense dominated at times last year vs the leagues best in brady, brees and rodgers not to mention teddy making some great throws down the stretch. yes, the vikings are headed in a bad directions as a team and orginization. fools. skol. just remember our last 5 losses were by a combines 16 points.

  38. Good luck, MJ. As a Bengals fan, I really hope that you return to Cincy, but if you choose the Vikings I’ll understand…. Zimmer’s success and fame came as a result of Marvin Lewis. Zimmer’s a great DC, and maybe a good HC (time will tell). Geno, Carlos, Walley, Domato & the crew miss your presence on & off the field… and so does this fan.

  39. Actually vex24, he would have gotten the Cowboys head coaching job that Wade Phillips got. Zim made the mistake of following that idiot Bobby Petrino to Atlanta and Then Petrino resigned two months later without coaching a game. And Jerry Jones loved him. Zim will unfortunately likely be fired before he finds a quarterback. The Bengals got Andy the Niners got Kap in the second round at 36 and 37 respectively. The Bengals never missed a beat after CP left. He ain’t Brady but could get better. Boomer and Kenny never put up those numbers but this is a deep roster, deeper than they had. Aaron Rodgers sat for 5 years while Andy was given a baptism under fire. Cleveland has been looking for 15 years and some of their cast offs are succeeding. Wasn’t Weeden a Brown for awhile? Huggins said you don’t take an NBA head coaching position unless the front office is sound. Minnesota has an awful front office. Belecheats got fired because? No quarterback. And Cincy’s cold enough but Minneapolis? Nah baba nah.
